H.G. Sankarshan das Adhikari, USA: Friday 6 May 2011--The Absolute Necessity of Initiation--and--Composition of Bodies in Spiritual World
A daily broadcast of the Ultimate Self Realization Course(tm) Friday 6 May 2011 The Supreme Personality of Godhead, Lord Sri Krishna, and His eternal consort, Srimati Radharani are enjoying transcendental pastimes in the topmost planet of the spiritual world, Sri Goloka Vrindavan. They are beckoning us to rejoin them. (Click on photo to see a larger image.) Our Mission: To help everyone awaken their original Krishna consciousness, which is eternal, full of knowledge and full of bliss. Such a global awakening will, in one stroke, solve all the problems of the world society bringing in a new era of unprecedented peace and prosperity for all. May that day, which the world so desperately needs, come very soon. We request you to participate in this mission by reviving your dormant Krishna consciousness and assisting us in spreading this science all over the world. Dedicated with love to ISKCON Founder-Acharya: His Divine Grace A.C. Bhaktivedanta Swami Prabhupada, our beloved spiritual master, and to you, our dear readers. Today's Thought: The Absolute Necessity of Initiation Uploaded from Bhaktivedanta Ashram--Austin, Texas USA Initiation means a solid commitment to follow the process of Krishna consciousness according to the authorized directions given in the Vedic literatures. In accordance with Vedic injunctions, it is a commitment to follow the bona fide spiritual master in disciplic succession from Lord Sri Krishna. But can't God be approached directly without going through a spiritual master? We can surely approach Him directly through prayer and scriptural study. But as soon as we do that we discover that He is ordering us to become the devotee of His devotee in order to become His devotee. This is stated by Lord Krishna in the Adi Purana as follows: ye me bhakta-janh prtha na me bhakt ca te janh mad-bhaktnm ca ye bhakts te me bhakta-tam math My dear Arjuna, those who are My direct devotees are actually not My devotees, but those who are the devotees of My devotee are factually My devotees. Initiation is the most enlivening experience of being born again into your eternal transcendental existence. Our first birth is from our mother and father, but even animals get such a birth. To actually become a human being requires getting a second birth through the process of initiation. In this sublime rejuvenation of the immortal soul, the spiritual master becomes our eternal father and the Vedas become our mother. I was accepted as a disciple of His Divine Grace A.C. Bhaktivedanta Swami on 12 August 1971. This moment of my initiation was the turning point in my eternal existence that has restored me to who I actually am, the eternal servant of Krishna. If you would like to regain your actual identity, you also require to be initiated by the bona fide spiritual master coming in an unbroken line of disciplic succession from Lord Sri Krishna. Qualify yourself now for becoming initiated by chanting at least 16 rounds every day of the Hare Krishna mahamantra on japa beads, as well as strictly avoiding illicit sex, intoxication, meat eating, and gambling. Getting initiated will be the wisest decision you ever made in the vast sojourn of your eternal existence. Sankarshan Das Adhikari Two Spiritual Daughters Receive Pranam Mantra In Preparation for Initiation Kaunas, Lithuania--1 May 2011 http://www.backtohome.com/images/2011-Spring/Pranam.Mantra.JPG Answers According to the Vedic Version: Question: Composition of Bodies in Spiritual World My Dear Srila Gurudeva, Please accept my humble obeisances to you First of all thanks a lot for guiding me in the right path. I have a question, kindly guide me. I understand that those living entities who reside on the sun planet have bodies made of fire. My question is: In spiritual world, what is the type of body possessed by the soul? Your humble servant S.K. Answer: Eternity, Knowledge, and Bliss Just as one cannot enter the fire unless he has a body made of fire, one cannot enter into Krishna's abode of eternity, knowledge, and bliss unless he has a spiritual body composed of eternity, knowledge, and bliss. This means that when a soul goes back to Godhead he regains his original body composed of eternity, knowledge, and bliss. H.H. Prahladananda Swami: Lecture – BG 15.10 Sunday Feast- Why Walk To Hell When You Can Fly
BG 15.10: The foolish cannot understand how a living entity can quit his body, nor can they understand what sort of body he enjoys under the spell of the modes of nature. But one whose eyes are trained in knowledge can see all this.

BG 13.26: Again there are those who, although not conversant in spiritual knowledge, begin to worship the Supreme Person upon hearing about Him from others. Because of their tendency to hear from authorities, they also transcend the path of birth and death.

H.H. Prahladananda Swami: Lecture – BG 13.22 What Is Our Self Interest
H.H. Prahladananda Swami: Lecture – BG 13.22 What Is Our Self Interest
BG 13.22: The living entity in material nature thus follows the ways of life, enjoying the three modes of nature. This is due to his association with that material nature. Thus he meets with good and evil among various species.

BG 11.36: Arjuna said: O master of the senses, the world becomes joyful upon hearing Your name, and thus everyone becomes attached to You. Although the perfected beings offer You their respectful homage, the demons are afraid, and they flee here and there. All this is rightly done.

A Mouse In Our Temple
Toronto, Ontario
A church mouse had made his presence at the cozy lounge corner of our temple room. He was small and cute but staggering about, I don't know why.
It was slightly embarrassing, you see, because a school teacher came a moment early as students were just trailing in. The teacher adored him until he was caught in a cup by one of our brahmacari monks and released in the park near the Prabhupada tree.
We were compelled to wonder what good fortune the little critter has gone through being inside a temple, hearing mantra meditation and perhaps having the luck to nibble on some crumbs of sanctified food, prasadam? The other question arose, "What kind of pious or devotional activities did this little guy perform to bring on this auspiciousness or good fortune, being in a sacred space?"
It was saint Bhaktivinod who expresses in one of his songs that he didn't mind being in a bug's body so long as he would be born in the home of holy activity. There would be so much merit and benefit in that.
It happened that where the mouse did his little dance, at the cozy lounge corner of the temple room, that two groups of students from Thomas Merton Secondary School sat to hear from our humble self about the Absolute. Prodded on by the teachers to offer some advice to the grade Eleven pupils, I was inspired to say, "I know some of you are checking out the options of enticement out there. There's parties and other forms of experimentation but as long as you maintain a spiritual base you will always be protected and be fortunate.

Toronto Sankirtan Team, CA: I remember
Two ladies were trying to cross the street at Avenue and Bloor when I waved and tried to stop them. As I reached out to them with a perfection of yoga and bhakti yoga each, one of them looked at the Bhagavad gita in my hand and exclaimed that she was looking for it as her friend had mentioned about it to her. So I opened the Bhagavad gita and started to show them. As I showed the picture of reincarnation the other lady started to say that she knew this picture, she had been seeing it from her childhood days. She told me she didn’t know what it means but since she was little, her mom in Russia used to show her this picture. Then as I turned the pages she saw the picture of Krishna and Arjuna on the chariot and she started to say she knew that one too – it was like her memories were flashing in front of her eyes. I could see pretty clearly the effect of association of Srila Prabhupada’s books. They both ended up taking two books each and gave their emails with nice donations. I am wondering how through the change of bodies from childhood, to youth to middle age one remembers a picture that they don’t even know the meaning of – surely there is some special power there.• Email to a friend • •

Devadeva Mirel, Alachua, USA: Review : The Jackson’s Store
Downtown Alachua isn’t much of a downtown, however we’ve got a few cute antique shops lining Main Street. My absolute favorite shop is The Jackson’s Store. Last week my husband headed out of town to Cayo Costa, camping with los ninos. Left with a messy house and a 4 month old baby, inspired by Leela Cyd’s yummy table cloths, I put the baby in the pouchie and headed downtown to check out the vintage table cloth selection. For the record, I bought two.
This is one of my table cloths I purchased for $12.
Since time was not an issue, I hung out in Mr. Jackson’s shop, checking over every little used gem. He is an old man with a Mennonite beard and a mid-western drawl but jeepers, he’s got an eye for the good stuff.
Mr. Jackson is retired from his day job and opened this shop 3 years ago–right around the time my family rolled into town–as a second start in life. He quit the cigarettes and stays real busy scouting junk and using his picker skills. He and his wife work real hard to bring new life into their finds, scrubbing dirt and droppings, sanding rust off things and refinishing and painting to get items ready to sell. He also has a brother who makes custom tables from reclaimed barn wood. The list prices are fair, reflecting the elbow grease that goes into readying items for resale and, of course, negotiable.
I love the white buffet with mirror resting atop it (sold separately) as well as the refurbished chicken house. He does sell some stuff on consignment (the table linens I bought, for example).
Mr. Jackson’s tastes may be a bit more urbane than the average Alachuan’s, but he does sell to designers outside the area. When I was in the shop, a woman called from Boston about a piece for sale on the floor.

The Word "Splendour".... Hmmm!
Toronto, Ontario
In reading a passage from the Gita, a purport Chapter 15.12 makes use of the word 'splendour' in a most appropriate way. When describing the sun as splendourous, it fits. When describing the moon, well, to use a secular saying, 'I'll drink to that'.
However, the Doubting Thomas in me surfaced when the word 'splendour was applied to electricity. The demon that I am rejected this choice of word used by my own beloved guru. The power of electricity would seem to be appropiate. That terminology or description would get my current going, but 'splendour'? No way, Jose!
When my dear visiting godbrother, Partha, described this phrase and expressed it in the context of of the Creator being the world's electrical source, then the light bulb inside suddenly lit up. Of course, that's it. When you plug it all into the socket of the Absolute it all takes on a different meaning. Out with the mundane thinking and on with transcendental vision.
In further deliberation on this topic I expressed to Partha one of the reasons for my passion for walking. "It brings you to the point of appreciating the word 'splendour'." When you get out you feel air, the sun, rain, snow. You see the sky, the stars, trees, grass, rivers flowing, etc. It's a confirmation of the might and beauty in our midst, the wonder and the splendour. When walking in the out-of-doors, everything starts to make sense.

Devadeva Mirel, Alachua, USA: Trend Alert! : Traditional Woods + Modern Nickel
Walnut, rift sawn oak, knotty alder and antique chestnut–these woods all have a tactile depth too rich to ignore. Why go white when you can surround yourself with the soothing, dramatic grains of warm wood neutrals?
Be it the clean silhouette of modern furniture, the distressed edges of American antiques or the refined turned legs of 18th century reproductions, fine wood furniture and cabinetry has proven its staying power. Why not update the look by adding hardware in nickel?
Sure, I may sound like a freaking infomercial, but at least this is not an advertorial! Because if this were an advertorial, I would need to be getting paying myself for this post. And I assure you, no one is making any money off this blog. But let’s not digress. Nickel and walnut. Nickel and quartersawn oak. Nickel and antiqued salvage wood. I’m telling you, it is a look that is going to hit big time, especially as the white kitchen craze wanes. Keep reading…

H.H. Devamrita Swami: When the Green Mango of Lifelong Practice Ripens
Proper parents never discuss intimate adult affairs in the presence of their children. When the children grow, attaining maturity, the story of life and love in this world becomes revealed.
Demonstrating the care and discretion of a qualified guru, Svarupa Damodara Goswami, to answer Raghunatha das Goswami's question, ushered him to a quiet, private place.
As the personal secretary of Lord Caitanya, Svarupa Damodara Goswami enforced the standard: Krishna's amorous pastimes are never meant for mass broadcast. Untrained ears will easily mistake the transcendental for the mundane and vice versus.
Moreover, though among the select few of Mahaprabhu's most confidential associates, Svarupa Damodara Goswami vividly exemplified the tremendous humility characterizing one who actually knows Krishna's madhurya-lila.
"Neither I nor such inner associates of Lord Caitanya as Ramananda Rai and Gadadhara Pandit fully understand Krishna's perfect and pure intimate exchanges, of which Lord Caitanya Himself is the form," he began his address to Raghunatha das Goswami.
"If, however, that same Lord Caitanya will take charge of the tip of my tongue and He Himself reveals the most confidential truth about Himself, then by His own mercy, you will be able to enter into the mystery and experience the unchecked bliss that a genuine comprehension awards a genuine hearer."

Yoga of Ecology, Bhakta Chris, USA: Unnecessary Necessities
Hedonism, the path of unrestricted sense enjoyment, of ‘eat, drink and be merry’ and ‘beg, borrow or steal’, as advocated thousands of years ago by the Indian atheist philosopher Charbak, has now become a fashion in the Western countries. Teachers and students alike openly, proudly and, may I add, “foolishly” propound this distorted philosophy, which leads to all kinds of immorality and degradation in society. While more and more people indulge in all kinds of sense gratification, with obesity becoming a national concern in both North America and China, an ever increasing number of people on the planet cannot even meet their basic necessities of life. According to 2010 census, 1 out of 7 persons on the planet suffer from malnutrition, or in hard figures, 925 million people out of the estimated global population of 6.5 billion, 13.6%, cannot meet their basic needs of life, with hundreds of thousands dying every year due to such an impoverished condition. [http://www.worldhunger.org/articles/Learn/world%20hunger%20facts%202002.htm]
Contrary to popular belief, however, meeting one’s basic needs in life is no guarantee to happiness; nor is increasing one’s needs beyond the basic necessities of life automatically leading to increased happiness. Ironically, the opposite is true: to increase sense enjoyment is to increase ones entanglement in this material world and to increase sense gratification, disregarding the established laws of nature, directly increases one’s suffering.
One of the most illuminating purports on the topic of “basic needs” written by India’s foremost spiritual visionary, Srila Prabhupada, gives us a clear insight as to what the Vedic standard of life is meant to be. “Basic needs” for most people refer to those things in life needed to keep their body healthy and stout so that they can live without undue encumbrances. Living within a world of relativity, the poverty line drawn for one country often differs drastically from that of another. In the USA for example, statistics showed in year 2009 that close to 15% of the population were living below the poverty line. Yes, the claim is that in America, “the land of plenty”, such a high percentage of its population live below the poverty line. At a closer look, however, what the figures reveal is that close to 15% of the population were earning less than $ 20,000 a year with the American poverty level for 2011 now set at $ 22,350 for a family of four.[http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Poverty_in_the_United_States]
Clearly, what is basic for one country is seen as overindulgence for another. The Vedic culture, however, adds an important dimension to meeting one’s “basic needs”. “Basic needs” are meant to encompass not only the needs of the body but indeed those of the soul. Of the two, those of the soul are considered more important. The Vedic injunction is “jivasya tattva jijnasa”.
“Life's desires should never be directed toward sense gratification. One should desire only a healthy life, or self-preservation, since a human being is meant for inquiry about the Absolute Truth. Nothing else should be the goal of one's works.” [SB 1.2.10]
Let us thus properly utilize this human form of life to inquire about the absolute truth and thus become truly happy. Actual civilization begins with “atma-jnana”, knowledge of the soul.
Every single human being, including all embodied living entities in lower species of life, is burdened by the four same bodily necessities of life: eating, sleeping, mating and defending. According to the Vedic way of life, these four basic necessities of life can best be achieved by living within an agrarian based environment where life is simpler and our basic necessities can more easily be met. Have you ever wondered why historically the majority of the world’s population have lived in Asian countries and why this fact remains so even today? There are injunctions in the ancient Vedas whereby one is recommended to live only in such places where mango trees and papaya trees grow naturally. One should live in places where one can find natural pure waters, where one can easily grow one’s own food, where one can peacefully tend cows and associate with saintly persons, brahmanas, all governed and protected by a good responsible king. The Vedic culture thus stresses in many practical ways this most important principle of “simplicity” or “simple life”, a concept almost forgotten in today’s ever increasing complex way of living.
Srila Prabhupada thus explains the flaws of modern society, a society which has deviated in a major way from these simple concepts of life: “The basic principle of economic development is centered on land and cows. The necessities of human society are food grains, fruits, milk, minerals, clothing, wood, etc. One requires all these items to fulfill the material needs of the body. Certainly one does not require flesh and fish or iron tools and machinery. During the regime of Maharaja Yudhisthira, all over the world there were regulated rainfalls. Rainfalls are not in the control of the human being. The heavenly King Indra deva is the controller of rains, and he is the servant of the Lord. When the Lord is obeyed by the king and the people under the king's administration, there are regulated rains from the horizon, and these rains are the causes of all varieties of production on the land. Not only do regulated rains help ample production of grains and fruits, but when they combine with astronomical influences there is ample production of valuable stones and pearls. Grains and vegetables can sumptuously feed a man and animals, and a fatty cow delivers enough milk to supply a man sumptuously with vigour and vitality. If there is enough milk, enough grains, enough fruit, enough cotton, enough silk and enough jewels, then why do the people need cinemas, houses of prostitution, slaughterhouses, etc.? What is the need of an artificial luxurious life of cinema, cars, radio, flesh and hotels? Has this civilization produced anything but quarrelling individually and nationally? Has this civilization enhanced the cause of equality and fraternity by sending thousands of men into a hellish factory and the war fields at the whims of a particular man? [SB 1.10.4]
Meeting the basic needs of life is meant to be a simple affair which should not be much time consuming. But it is only possible when we keep in mind the spiritual dimension of life. The real basic needs of life are those of the spirit self. The basic need for every living being is to reconnect with the Lord in love and devotion, only then will he be happy. That we have forgotten in today’s misguided society. We falsely run after the illusory temporary material comforts of life falsely thinking we will be happy. It is for this reason that the Vedic culture advocates that we minimize our bodily demands to nourish our spiritual needs. It is for this reason that we find statements advocating a total disinterest in working towards economic development which further entangles the living entity in this world. And it is for this reason that we find such astounding statements that the Vedic way of life advocates that one actually earns less and remains happy with whatever Krishna easily provides. Only then we will experience real lasting happiness in both this world and the next.
“Everyone requires possessions such as food grains, clothing, money and other things necessary for the maintenance of the body, but one should not collect more than necessary for his actual basic needs. If this natural principle is followed, there will be no difficulty in maintaining the body. [NOI, Verse 2, Purport]
“This is the picture of ideal family life. When Sri Caitanya Mahaprabhu asked Ramananda Raya about the goal of life, Ramananda Raya described it in different ways, according to the recommendations of the revealed scriptures, and finally Sri Ramananda Raya explained that one may stay in his own position, whether as a brahmana, a sudra, a sannyasi or whatever, but one must try to inquire about life's goal (athato brahma jijnasa). This is the proper utilization of the human form of life. When one misuses the gift of the human form by unnecessarily indulging in the animal propensities of eating, sleeping, mating and defending and does not try to get out of the clutches of maya, which subjects one to repeated birth, death, old age and disease, one is again punished by being forced to descend to the lower species and undergo evolution according to the laws of nature. Prakriti kriyamanani gunai karami sarvasaha [Bg. 3.27]. Being completely under the grip of material nature, the living entity must evolve again from the lower species to the higher species until he at last returns to human life and gets the chance to be freed from the material clutches. A wise man, however, learns from the sastras and guru that we living entities are all eternal but are put into troublesome conditions because of associating with different modes under the laws of material nature. He therefore concludes that in the human form of life he should not endeavour for unnecessary necessities, but should live a very simple life, just maintaining body and soul together.
Certainly one requires some means of livelihood, and according to one's varna and asrama this means of livelihood is prescribed in the sastras. One should be satisfied with this. Therefore, instead of hankering for more and more money, a sincere devotee of the Lord tries to invent some ways to earn his livelihood, and when he does so Krishna helps him. Earning one's livelihood, therefore, is not a problem. The real problem is how to get free from the bondage of birth, death and old age. Attaining this freedom, and not inventing unnecessary necessities, is the basic principle of Vedic civilization. One should be satisfied with whatever means of life comes automatically. The modern materialistic civilization is just the opposite of the ideal civilization. Every day the so-called leaders of modern society invent something contributing to a cumbersome way of life that implicates people more and more in the cycle of birth, death, old age and disease.” [SB 7.14.5]
To facilitate meeting our basic material needs as well as to help meet our spiritual needs, in his wisdom, Lord Krishna, the creator of this material world, has devised a simple yet very scientific social system called varnasrama dharma. When properly understood and applied, the varnasrama way of life, which is centered on land, cows and Krishna, automatically helps individuals and society alike to advance and prosper. Daiva varnasrama dharma is that same varnasrama dharma which emphasizes the need to focus all our activities on the divine and thus spiritualize our lives to become happy both in this life and the next.

Bhakta Chris, New York, USA: The Humble Musings Of The Manhattan Monk 5/5/11
How is it that we can become empowered through the most awful, difficult situations? My life experience certainly does not give me any practical clarity, but from the examples of others we see that when the veils are lifted, when one has to sink or swim, we grow in inconceivable ways to our limited consciousness when we persevere and refuse to drown wrapped in the vines of our false nature.
A mood of deep prayer must permeate our lives to allow us to develop the instinct to swim (although we may have to sink a bit a few times over in order to get the picture). Most importantly, the association of the saints around will always prevent us from fully drowning, if we genuinely feel the need for their presence, and cling to it with all of our meager might.
***
I have to pray for the most unique blessings, because look at my situation: agitated mind, slumbering soul, swimming upstream in a monastery at the locus point of Manhattan Island. But what relish in this courageous life, a life that finally has given me a deep and central meaning, which is slowly giving substance to these expressions and to my creative spirit.
I move slowly but surely beyond that complacency which yields no fruits with any juice, sweet or bitter. In this irrational, difficult, paradoxical struggle of a life I finally find the real way forward.
***
It's not so much the substance we crave as the craving itself which is the obstacle. It's something indeed to notice the same endorphin rush, the same nervous anxiety for the relief I hold dear, even if it's not of the same gross devious nature as before. Still, the boulder lies in the path my worn feet tries to walk.
No better chance to actually practice the detached mind when you get what you need, rather than getting what you want.
No better chance to actually practice the detached mind when Krsna deals you the trick material hand, when He liberated you of the unnecessary and the rotten.
Admittance of our weakness is not an excuse to act out that weakness. Instead it should be a compulsion to take greater care in whom we associate with and with what situations we place ourselves into.
***
What mystery lays there in Your presence so close to me, that I cannot even hear or understand, yet my heart, with even the slightest sense of You, tastes a yearning beyond all that is unreal, a magnetism that frees me from who I am not.• Email to a friend • •
