Our Mission: To help everyone awaken their original Krishna consciousness, which is eternal, full of knowledge and full of bliss. Such a global awakening will, in one stroke, solve all the problems of the world society bringing in a new era of unprecedented peace and prosperity for all. May that day, which the world so desperately needs, come very soon. We request you to participate in this mission by reviving your dormant Krishna consciousness and assisting us in spreading this science all over the world. Join this Conference: http://groups.google.com/group/sda_students Today's Thought: Fully Surcharged with Transcendental Love Uploaded from Bhaktivedanta Ashram, Austin, Texas USA In the beginning of the ultimate self-realization pathway of Krishna consciousness the devotee feels some liking for Krishna. Gradually through associating with devotees and following the instructions of the bona fide spiritual master that liking becomes more and more transformed into love, until finally the devotee becomes fully surcharged with pure transcendental love of God. This is the supreme perfection of existence. It far surpasses all other levels of self-realization. Sankarshan Das Adhikari No Consciousness Is More Amazing and Wonderful than Pure Love for Krishna http://www.backtohome.com/images/Krishna_gopis.jpg Answers by Citing the Vedic Version: Question: In What Mood to Remember Krishna? All glories to Srila Prabhupada! Please accept my respectful obeisances Thank you very much for the beautiful letter. You wrote me that I should always remember Krishna But I want to ask: In what mood must He be remembered and in what mood should I chant His holy names? Is there a difference in the attitudes of a neophyte and that of pure devotee? Stefani Answer: Happy, Loving, Fully Surrendered Mood You should remember Krishna and chant His names in a happy, loving, fully surrendered mood always eager to serve Him in any way that is required. This jolly, totally surrendered mood is the same both for the neophyte and the pure devotee. The difference is that the neophyte is practicing how to always be in this mood and the pure devotee is naturally, spontaneously always in this mood. Subhavilasa das ACBSP, Toronto, CA: Potency of Purity...Sri Raghunandana Thakura feeds Gopinatha Ladoo

Picture
Today marks the disappearance day of Sri Raghunandana Thakura on the Vaishnava calendar. In Caitanya Caritamrta Madha-lila Chapter 15 from verse 112 onwards discusses sweet interaction between Raghunandana and Chaitanya Mahaprabu.

When Mahaprabhu was addressing Mukunda as to who is father and who is son, Mahaprabhu of course knew everything but it gives us an important lesson. (Mukunda is actually the father and Raghunandana is the son but just see... ) Mukunda replied "All of us have attained devotion to Krsna due to Raghunandana. Therefore in my mind he is my father." This shows the importance of a spiritual father who helps us attain devotion to Krishna.

In verse 131 the exalted position of Rahhunandana is revealed by Chaitanya Mahprabhu Himself when He states, "Furthermore, it is the duty of Raghunandana to always engage in Lord Krsna's service. He has no other intention but the service of Lord Krsna."

Today on this special day I want to share with you some nectar which we also shared on Sri Raghunandana Thakura's appearance day. Whenever we hear stories involving Gopinatha we think of beloved Gopinatha in ISKCON Toronto who is fed sweet rice every day by His loving devotees...and that is why He is always smiling and a bit chubby. So this story is sweet since it involves Gopinatha nectar but also this story demonstrates the potency of purity.

In the house of Sri Mukunda Das, who lives at Sri Khanda, Lord Sri Gopinath is served with greatdevotion. One day Mukunda was called out to do some work, and then he instructed his son Raghunandan to worship the deity and asked him to serve the Lord Gopinath that day. He explained to him that this deity is in our family for many generations and thus He has been worshipped by my father and his father and his father on and on, in this way for many years. Just as your mother feeds you and I everyday, so also He has to be fed everyday. Having explained to Raghunandan that this is a very big responsibility and he should be very careful to give his full attention to this service, Mukunda went out.

Raghunandan meanwhile having been instructed by his father, collected the items for offering to Sri Gopinathji and entered into the deity room. Raghunandan was at that time barely 5 years old and therefore, when he saw that Gopinath hadn't eaten the offering after he had imitated how his father offered the bhoga, he became very worried. Ultimately he simply requested Gopinath with tears in his eyes: "Please eat! Eat!" Gopinath became completely subjected by Raghunandan's simple request, which was made entirely in love, and thus he stealthily ate up everything without leaving any remnants.

After some time Raghu-nandan's father, Mukunda, returned and asked his son if he had done as he was told? When his son replied "Yes", then Mukunda asked him to bring some of the prasadam. Raghunandan replied, "Prasadam? I offered everything just like you told me, and Gopinath ate everything; so what should I bring you now?" Mukunda was completely taken aback. "This boy is not naughty and is always accustomed to speak the truth. I doubt if he could have eaten everything. I wonder what actually happened?"

Musing on this matter in this way for some time, on another day his curiosity was so stirred that he again requested Raghunandan to offer the bhoga to Gopinath on that day. On this day however, having gone out of the house, he again came in by another way and remained hiding in one place. Raghunandan was very happy to be able to serve Sri Gopinathji again and brought everything into the deity room. As before, he again very insistently persuaded Gopinath to take his meal. As Gopinath had eaten half of a laddu, he espied Mukunda peering out from his hiding spot. He didn't try to cover up the fact that he had eaten what he had, but neither did he eat anymore.

Seeing all this Mukunda was completely immersed in ecstatic love and picked up his son and put him on his lap. He extolled his virtues in a voice trembling with ecstasy, all the while torrents of tears of joy falling from his eyes. Even today, those who are greatly fortunate can still see that half-eaten laddu in Gopinatha's lotus hand.

Jaya Gopinatha!
Jaya Sri Raghunandana Thakur!

Bharatavarsa.net: Bhakti Vikasa Swami: Boxing with Mayavadis

(Boston, 1969)

Prabhupada starts commenting, criticizing false gurus. And suddenly he's got a debate on his hands. We want to take him away, but ... An Indian man says, "I want to love everyone." Prabhupada: "That is bogus -- only if you love God ... " "Yes, but ... " Prabhupada: "First of all answer this ... " Guest: "But what I want to say is -- " Indian man: "What is God?" Another: "I think the trouble is -- "(It's not even a debate but too many people talking at once and they have formed a close circle around Prabhupada and me and Govinda dasi and others can't get in at him to break it up. These people are too argumentative ... ) "Do something!" they say to me. But what can I do? Man: "What you are doing by chanting is a kind of ... " Prabhupada: "You chant and you will understand. If you have no child, then how can you understand what is the labor of producing a child?" Man: "But then it's like saying that if you haven't ever leaped into a well ... " Prabhupada: "First of all you do not know yourself." Man: "But I am God, right? I am God and you are God too." Prabhupada: "You are dog." (It heats up -- we are all God -- no -- you don't know the meaning of God -- everything is God -- no, no -- But it's all the same -- no. What is the same? It's all the same, sure. It's not the same thing. Of course, it is the same thing.) And so it deteriorates and we are afraid that it has become offensive by now to let this go on. But Prabhupada is fighting away, tightly encircled, pushing them off with arguments. He is far away from Vrndavana, India, but quite at home in Cambridge, Mass., boxing with the Mayavadis ... Man: "Everything is ‘it.' It's all ‘it.'" Prabhupada: "You don't talk nonsense. No. We have got enough time." Man: "No, wait, just one moment. Cause and effect are all the same thing." Prabhupada: "No, no, no." Man: "Yes, sure." Prabhupada: "This is cotton" (he takes hold of the man's shirt collar) "The collar is cotton. Would you like to take cotton instead of the shirt?" Man: "This is illusion." Prabhupada: "Not illusion." (It's sure not illusion, but Prabhupada has the man by the collar and the devotees say to me, "Now get Swamiji out of here, right now!" But it continues for at least ten more minutes -- Vivekananda comes up as a topic, and everything is one, serving humanity is service to God. When several people start talking and shouting at once -- Prabhupada looks to us outside the circle and we say, "We have a car. The car is waiting." Prabhupada says, "All right, car is waiting." And I say to the Mayavadis, "Come to the temple and ask the questions you have." Prabhupada leaves as a true gentleman, "Thank you. I thank you for your questions." And the guy with minimum respect says, "Oh, okay, fine. I'll ask you again."

Bhakti Lata, Alachua, USA: A Note from Mexico

I write this at a cafe in Mexico overlooking the glimmering Pacific Ocean. I feel strange to be writing this on a computer, connecting with the world.

Not even 24 hours before the Bus Tour pulled out of Alachua, Manu invited me to hop on. In a spirit of pure adventure, I worked out the kinks in my life and finances and bam, I jumped on.

I feel like I've been in Oz for the past week and a half. Every morning I wake up to a new adventure amidst 50 other youth as we travel across North America.

Right now we're off to dance and sing in the streets of Ensenada, and I must go. Many stories and pictures await.

Pandu das: The Null Hypothesis

I am considering whether to abandon this blog, perhaps to start another.  I started this blog with the intention of documenting my happy advancement in Krishna consciousness, but instead it quickly turned into a chronology of outrage, grief, and disappointment in the Hare Krishna movement.  I’ve had little good to say about it for the past six years.

I’ve never thought of the Hare Krishna movement as separate from Krishna, as if it was out of His control.  If He isn’t even the Lord of the devotees, then who?  I spent fifteen years directing my love and worship up the parampara, and now the blame gas to go up too.  Prabhupada created a monster with ISKCON that hurt many lives very deeply.  Where is Krishna?  Who can fix this?  I asked if Krishna could be nice, if He would help, but He continues only remain as if He did not exist.  What is this??  What kind of God arranges the torture and rape of His devotees’ children when He should be protecting them, and who otherwise does not seem to care?  One who should be disregarded.

So my search has ended, but not in the way I hoped or expected.

H.H. Bhaktimarg Swami: Monday, August 1st, 2011

Olla! Mexico!

La Fonda, Mexico

Our two Krishna Cultural Tour Buses arrived at the Mexican border near Tijuana. It took two energy bars and a twenty dollar bill to present to customs to convince them that “our church group” be given clearance. No passports needed to be shown. That was a subtle bribe, I guess -- an ingenious move by Manu.

Driving up to a crude but private campsite at La Fonda, we are not too far south where you can easily purchase anything with U.S. bucks. Before arriving we stopped at, believe it or not, Walmart, to buy supplies for our three day stay in the area. The Pacific is wondrous. I couldn’t resist a dip. As soon as we arrived, Nirguna and I became children.

Oooh! Cold are it’s waters.

From there we tread south bound with sand under our feet and pelicans over our heads. They were sailing above in a jagged line and then swooping down for a serious dive at the water. Their aim? Fish, of course! One pelican after landing on the beach didn’t make it into the air again. Nature takes it’s course. A dog attack saw to it’s end.

Co-campers at our site go for fish as well. They apply fire to their catch. Some folks dig for crabs. I look at such ventures with gratitude. As Vaishnavas we don’t do such things. It doesn’t necessarily mean we are better people but that we live in a different mode. If attitude is triggered by life-style, which it usually does, then it could hamper spiritual progress.

I have referred to the Gita’s verse before beginning “vidya vinaya sampane…” “See with equal vision the various life forms.” “We are all spirits” is the resounding message.

Abhimanyu, a young devotee, seems to be just about everyone’s favourate on the bus tour. He delivered the valedictorian speech at his school three months back. I’m training him as an understudy for our drama “The Three Lives of Bharat.”

Campfire kirtan (chanting) concluded this bright day’s end.

Japa Group: Right Conscious For Chanting

Hare Krsna my dear devotees. Yesterday I felt happy while chanting because the feeling I had inside myself was the feeling of gratefulness, love and reciprocation towards the Lord for providing such and amazing relationship with us through His holy names. Sometimes we face difficulties in our lives but they are only to makes us stronger and more dependent on Krsna - that is when we feel inclined to fix our chanting and our spiritual lives.

This week we need to think of a prayer to present to the members of the Japa Room. I took this one made from Hanuman to Lord Rama to inspire me and the devotees on their chanting.
Therefore, whether one is a demigod or a demon, a man or a creature other than man, such as a beast or bird, everyone should worship Sri Ramacandra, the Lord, who appears on this earth just like a human being. There is no need of great austerities or penances to worship the Lord, for He accepts even a small service offered by His devotee. Thus He is satisfied, and as soon as He is satisfied, the devotee is successful. Indeed, Sri Ramacandra brought all the devotees of Ayodhya back home, back to Godhead.

Srimad Bhagavatam 5.19.7-8
Wishing you all a wonderful week of chanting.

your servant,

Aruna devi

Yoga of Ecology, Bhakta Chris, USA: On Nauru, A Sinking Feeling

From the New York Times

Yaren, Nauru

Related in Opinion

I FORGIVE you if you have never heard of my country.

At just 8 square miles, about a third of the size of Manhattan, and located in the southern Pacific Ocean, Nauru appears as merely a pinpoint on most maps — if it is not missing entirely in a vast expanse of blue.

But make no mistake; we are a sovereign nation, with our own language, customs and history dating back 3,000 years. Nauru is worth a quick Internet search, I assure you, for not only will you discover a fascinating country that is often overlooked, you will find an indispensible cautionary tale about life in a place with hard ecological limits.

Phosphate mining, first by foreign companies and later our own, cleared the lush tropical rainforest that once covered our island’s interior, scarring the land and leaving only a thin strip of coastline for us to live on. The legacy of exploitation left us with few economic alternatives and one of the highest unemployment rates in the world, and led previous governments to make unwise investments that ultimately squandered our country’s savings.

I am not looking for sympathy, but rather warning you what can happen when a country runs out of options. The world is headed down a similar path with the relentless burning of coal and oil, which is altering the planet’s climate, melting ice caps, making oceans more acidic and edging us ever closer to a day when no one will be able to take clean water, fertile soil or abundant food for granted.

Climate change also threatens the very existence of many countries in the Pacific, where the sea level is projected to rise three feet or more by the end of the century. Already, Nauru’s coast, the only habitable area, is steadily eroding, and communities in Papua New Guinea and the Solomon Islands have been forced to flee their homes to escape record tides. The low-lying nations of Tuvalu, Kiribati and the Marshall Islands may vanish entirely within our grandchildren’s lifetimes.

Similar climate stories are playing out on nearly every continent, where a steady onslaught of droughts, floods and heat waves, which are expected to become even more frequent and intense with climate change, have displaced millions of people and led to widespread food shortages.

The changes have already heightened competition over scarce resources, and could foreshadow life in a world where conflicts are increasingly driven by environmental catastrophes.

Yet the international community has not begun to prepare for the strain they will put on humanitarian organizations or their implications for political stability around the world.

In 2009, an initiative by the Pacific Small Island Developing States, of which I am chairman, prompted the United Nations General Assembly to recognize the link between climate change and security. But two years later, no concrete action has been taken.

So I was pleased to learn that the United Nations Security Council will take up the issue tomorrow in an open debate, in which I will have the opportunity to address the body and reiterate my organization’s proposals.

First, the Security Council should join the General Assembly in recognizing climate change as a threat to international peace and security. It is a threat as great as nuclear proliferation or global terrorism. Second, a special representative on climate and security should be appointed. Third, we must assess whether the United Nations system is itself capable of responding to a crisis of this magnitude.

The stakes are too high to implement these measures only after a disaster is already upon us. Negotiations to reduce emissions should remain the primary forum for reaching an international agreement. We are not asking for blue helmets to intervene; we are simply asking the international community to plan for the biggest environmental and humanitarian challenge of our time.

Nauru has begun an intensive program to restore the damage done by mining, and my administration has put environmental sustainability at the center of our policymaking. Making our island whole again will be a long and difficult process, but it is our home and we cannot leave it for another one.

I forgive you if you have never heard of Nauru — but you will not forgive yourselves if you ignore our story.

Marcus Stephen is the president of Nauru.
