H.G. Sankarshan das Adhikari, USA: Saturday 28 May 2011--Perfect Understanding through Faith in Guru--and--Helping Youth is Straying from Bhakti?
A daily broadcast of the Ultimate Self Realization Course Saturday 28 May 2011 The Supreme Personality of Godhead, Lord Sri Krishna, and His eternal consort, Srimati Radharani are enjoying transcendental pastimes in the topmost planet of the spiritual world, Sri Goloka Vrindavan. They are beckoning us to rejoin them. (Click on photo to see a larger image.) Our Mission: To help everyone awaken their original Krishna consciousness, which is eternal, full of knowledge and full of bliss. Such a global awakening will, in one stroke, solve all the problems of the world society bringing in a new era of unprecedented peace and prosperity for all. May that day, which the world so desperately needs, come very soon. We request you to participate in this mission by reviving your dormant Krishna consciousness and assisting us in spreading this science all over the world. Dedicated with love to ISKCON Founder-Acharya: His Divine Grace A.C. Bhaktivedanta Swami Prabhupada, our beloved spiritual master, and to you, our dear readers. Today's Thought: Perfect Understanding through Faith in Guru Uploaded from Sofa, Bulgaria If we think that through scriptural study we can surpass our spiritual master in transcendental understanding, we are making a big mistake. The only way that we can properly understand the scriptures is to have full faith in the words of our spiritual master. Then by his mercy we will gain perfect understanding of the Vedic siddhanta, the Vedic conclusion. Sankarshan Das Adhikari His Divine Grace Srila Prabhupada A Storehouse of Transcendental Knowledge http://www.backtohome.com/images/Prabhupada/sp_knowledge.jpg Answers According to the Vedic Version: Question: Helping Youth is Straying from Bhakti? Please accept my humble obeisances All glories to Srila Prabhupada Dear Maharaja, Thank you once again for a great class and inspiring association at ISKCON's Soho Street temple last Wednesday. I have a question regarding the process of Krishna bhakti: The nine-fold path of devotion beginning with sravanam and kirtanam (hearing and chanting) is the way we practice in the ashram. I have become aware that many devotees become involved in a variety of projects in addition to this. I have had the idea since coming into Krishna Consciousness of taking Krishna to those young people who are so lost that they are prepared to take their very lives. I had some experience of this when I was working in special schools in Denmark with children and teenagers with emotional and behavioral difficulties. I feel inspired by such a plan for a number of reasons. But I wonder if such a path is really suitable for a devotee to follow. Is it straying too much from the devotional path? I would be very happy if you would give your opinion on this matter. Hare Krishna, Your Servant, B.R. Answer: Helping Others Is Very Essence of Bhakti A Krishna conscious outreach program to help the lost young people is first class bhakti and falls into the category of kirtanam, the glorification of the Lord. Any sort of activity which educates others in the transcendental bhakti science is kirtanam. Srila Prabhupada is the prime example of this. By starting the Krishna consciousness movement he saved so many lost young people from confusion and delusion. He liberated thousands from the miseries material existence. And through his books, in due course of time, he will liberate the entire world. So, on the contrary, to give Krishna consciousness to the lost young people is the very essence of the devotional path. It is the mood of Srimati Radharani to bring the jiva souls back to Krishna. uploaded by drsaurabhparikh at youtube.com
The story now is going towards the past when Nar and Narayan go in deep meditation in the Himalayas. Due to their piousness and deep meditation, the throne of Indra is in trouble. Indra wants to break the Samadhi or meditation of them. Hence, he sends his beautiful apsaras to attract towards them and break the meditation. When the meditation is broken, Nar sees the apsaras, he creates one much beautiful and elegant from his thigh. This is how the most beautiful apasara of Lord Indra takes birth. He names her as Urvashi and tells them to take her as his gift to Indra and again goes in meditation. The Nar and Narayan are the future Krishna and Arjun in their next rebirths. See it presented nicely in "Krishna" serial by Ramanand Sagar.

Vraja Kishor, JP: The Ecstasy of Bhagavad Gita
I now have the good fortune of discussing the 45th stanza of the 11th chapter of Srimad Bhagavad Gita. Before doing so I would like to say something simple:
To Śrī Caitanya Prabhu, my respect
Although a child, by his grace I will
Swim past the sharks and crocodiles of various theories
And reach the ocean of conclusive truth.- Caitanya Caritāmṛta Adi.2.1
All glories to my patient and realized spiritual master
Who labored extensively and thanklessly
To give me the wisdom of Bhagavad Gita
And the order to share it.Our param-guru Śrīla A.C. Bhaktivedānta Swāmī Prabhupāda, has made it possible for us to discuss the conclusive truth of Bhagavad Gita by giving his translation and commentary. His explanation of the text we will now discuss can be read here: http://vedabase.net/bg/11/45/ . Taking these words deep into my heart, I will now express them to you in my own way. May Śrīla Prabhupāda, Śrī Guru Mahārāja, and the great souls who read this be pleased with my small effort.

prasīda deveśa jagan-nivāsaThis unprecedented vision fills me with happiness,
But also disturbs my mind with fear!
So kindly grant me audience with your divine form
As the master of the gods, and resting place of the universe.Summary
Now I will present the subject to be discussed in summary.
Arjuna was happy to see the Universal Form… why? He was also very frightened by seeing it… why? He now asks Kṛṣṇa to show a new vision, a divine form… why this wording? Which form does he actually ask to see, and why?Why was Arjuna happy to see the Universal Form?
The answer is about “rāsa.” Sometimes we think that rāsa means relationship, but it doesn’t. The term rāsa really means experiencing an emotion to the fullest. Every emotion is based on a desire, and every desire is based on an object or subject with which we have some type of existential relationship. Thus, relationship is the most important part of rāsa. Relationship is not rāsa, but it is the foundation of rāsa.
In Sanskrit this foundation is called the sthāyī-bhava. The term sthāyī means the part which never changes. In experiencing emotions to their full depth, many components of that experience are constantly changing to provide fresher and newer appreciations of the subject – but the subject itself is styāyī , it never changes.
Since one’s relationship to Kṛṣṇa is eternal, nothing ever breaks or changes it. The present chapter and text of Bhagavad Gita illustrates this point.
Arjuna is Kṛṣṇa’s friend. That is his permanent relationship to the object of divine rāsa, Śrī Kṛṣṇa. Friendship is Arjuna’s sthāyī-bhava. You might think that if you saw your best friend suddenly showing 10 million arms and legs stretching across the galaxies, while creating and destroying solar systems with his or her mouth… well, you might stop being that person’s friend and start being their worshipper or fan or something, right? But this is not the case with sthāyī-bhava, which by its very nature extremely resilient and steady.
So, Śrīla Prabhupāda explains Arjuna’s feelings about seeing the terrible Universal Form of Kṛṣṇa. Arjuna did not think, “Oh no, he is not really my friend, he is really the supreme being! Oh no! I must not act like his friend anymore!!!” No, he didn’t think this way at all. Arjuna thought, “Holy moly! My friend is the supreme being!”
Do you see the difference? He does not think, “Oh no, I thought Kṛṣṇa was my friend, but now I know that he is really God.” Not at all, instead he thinks, “Wow, my friend Kṛṣṇa is God!”
That’s why Arjuna expresses that seeing the Universal Form makes him happy.
There are hundreds or more other examples of this type of thing. I will briefly mention a few delightful ones before continuing to the next point.
- On my first trip to Vrndavana, my spiritual master took a small group of us to a place called Varāha-Ghāṭ (it is quite near the Kṛṣṇa-Balarām Mandīr in Ramana-Reti). At this place the gopis were being rough with Kṛṣṇa (as he prefers!). Kṛṣṇa was defending himself by saying, “Hey, don’t insult me. Don’t you know I am Vishnu?” The Gopis said, “Ha!!! Absurd! If you are Vishnu show us one your daśāvatāra (ten incarnations) right now!” So without hesitation Kṛṣṇa became the huge boar incarnation, Varāha. Guru Maharaja said, “The gopīs were so happy. They did not think, ‘Oh no, we cannot flirt with this boy anymore because he is God.’ Instead they thought, ‘Oh yes! How awesome! Our paramour Kṛṣṇa is God!’ - Kṛṣṇa’s mother looked into his mouth when he was a boy accused of eating dirt. She saw there the entire earth, sky, space, etc. She got a little dizzy from the experience, but she did not say, “Oh no, this is not my child, this is God.” She said, “This is very perplexing, but somehow the child I gave birth to is the mother and father of the entire universe.”Why was Arjuna Frightened by the Universal Form?
Although he was happy to see how wonderful his friend Kṛṣṇa really was – the experience filled Arjuna’s mind with a disturbing sensation of fear. What is this fear? It is a fear that he may not have fully appreciated his friend Kṛṣṇa in the past, and therefore may have taken him to be an ordinary friend.
This is merely the inherent constitutional humility of a soul permeated with divine love. One’s relationship to the divine is very special. There are not enough words in any language to properly describe what a treasure it is. The self-realized beings saturated with the śakti of love cherish their intimate friendly relationships with God. They never for a moment think Kṛṣṇa is an ordinary friend, ordinary child, or ordinary lover. There is no lack of God-realization in prema-bhakti. Quite the contrary, it is the fullest realization of Godhead!
Arjuna never, ever treated Kṛṣṇa improperly for a moment. When a selfless soul loves Godhead so intensely, he treats Kṛṣṇa as though Kṛṣṇa needs him, needs her. Actually, this is what Kṛṣṇa lives for! This is why he took the trouble to exist and manifest existence. He is dying for us to treat him in this way: that we should love him so powerfully that it makes us feel that our service, our affection for him is imperative to his well being. And do not doubt for a millisecond that existentially the conclusive truth, the siddhānta is that Śrī Kṛṣṇa does need our affectionate service, loving friendship, caring paternal protection, and intimate romantic caresses. Without these, there is no meaning to his existence and the entire creation dims and becomes morose.
This is the great mystery of existence, more profound than any other. Those who have not at least, by the incomprehensible kindness of a pure Vaishnava, tasted a brief hint of the fragrance of Śrī Vraja-Prema simply cannot understand what this is really all about. They remain confused and dull headed. May we all be blessed to roll in the dust of Śrī Vraja-Dhāma without interruption, while hearing the beautiful name and glories of Kṛṣṇa through the heartfelt words of Śrī Guru and Śrī Vaishnava-gaṇa 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, 365 days a year.
Gaura Hari!
In conclusion, there is nothing improper at all in Arjuna’s treating Kṛṣṇa as a friend, etc. But out of the inherent humility which results from true love, Arjuna is worried that he might not have been loving and caring enough as Kṛṣṇa’s friend in the past.
Why does Arjuna ask to see a “divine” form?
Now, since Arjuna has become a bit dizzy and unsteady as a result of this completely amazing vision of the Universe within God… he is asking for it to stop. Roller coasters are fun, but also short. It is better that way.
Why does he use the term, “divine” form (deva-rūpam)? Wasn’t the universal form divine? No. It was divya or celestial, but not deva-rūpa – divine form. This is not splitting hairs, it is common sense. The Universal Form is, at the name defines it, a form pertaining to the universe. The universe is the material manifestation, also called jagat. Now Arjuna is asking to see Kṛṣṇa in a more elevated form, a form that is transcendent to the material universe.
Which Form Does Arjuna Ask to See, and Why?
Arjuna asks to see the form of Kṛṣṇa that is deveśa and jagan-nivāsa – the god of all the gods, and the abode of the Universe. Previously Kṛṣṇa showed Arjuna the Universal Form. Now Arjuna is asking for something better – “please show me the form that is the origin of this universe and this Universal Form.”
Deveśa – the god of all the gods – is Vishnu. Fans of other gods may argue otherwise by their opinion is merely emotional. May they keep their opinion and may it serve them well on their evolution towards the ultimate realization. An objective and thoroughly non-biased study of the Vedic scripture clearly confirms that although Vishnu and Shiva are one, Vishnu is the original and Shiva is the transformation (See Brahma-Samhita, Rg Veda, et. al.). Therefore although Mahādeva Shiva is the greatest of the gods and the master of them all, Śrī Vishnu is the origin of Mahādeva and thus the deveśa.
I offer my respectful obeisances to the devotees of the all auspicious Lord Shiva. May the dust of their saintly feet bless me with love of Kṛṣṇa, such as is possessed by their master, Gopeśwar Mahādev.
Arjuna asks to see Kṛṣṇa in the form of Vishnu, and in case there is any doubt of whether he is asking to see Shiva Ji or Vishnu, he clarifies further that the deveśa he wants to see is the jagan-nivāsa: The resting place of the universe. It is well known by everyone with any Vedic study whatsoever, that Shiva is the destroyer of the universe, Brahma the creator, and Vishnu is its resting place (nivāsa).
One may ask if the form of Vishnu is really deva-rūpa? After all isn’t it a form in relation to the universe which it supports? No. Vishnu is the transcendental Nārāyaṇa who exists outside the Universe, as well as pervading it to maintain its energetic viability.
So, Arjuna is asking Kṛṣṇa to show himself now as Vishnu – whose trademark is the brilliantly dark complexion with four arms holding a conch, lotus, club and discus. Although really, Arjuna would like Kṛṣṇa to return to his original, intimate two-handed form; after such a dizzying experience as we hear described in this chapter, he proposes to proceed, “one step at a time.”
Doy mis respectos a Śrī Caitanya Prabhu,
CC Ādi 2.1: I offer my obeisances to Sri Caitanya Mahāprabhu, by whose mercy even an ignorant child can swim across the ocean of conclusive truth, which is full of the crocodiles of various theories.
Nuestro param-gurú Śrīla A.C.

¡Oh no!
¡Absurdo!

Japa Group: He Appreciates A Small Service
Hare Krsna dear devotees. Here follows a beautiful prayer to Lord Ramacandra,
Therefore, whether one is a demigod or a demon, a man or a creature other than man, such as a beast or bird, everyone should worship Sri Ramacandra, the Lord, who appears on this earth just like a human being. There is no need of great austerities or penances to worship the Lord, for He accepts even a small service offered by His devotee. Thus He is satisfied, and as soon as He is satisfied, the devotee is successful. Indeed, Sri Ramacandra brought all the devotees of Ayodhya back home, back to Godhead. SB 5.19.7-8
I was thinking about my service today, I did not feel very proud of my cooking and felt I should serve in a better mood and with more devotion. Sometimes we are not aware of how we can serve, the same happens with chanting, we think it is like a normal duty we perform every day, but actually it is a very important and valuable service, it is our connection with the Lord, it is how we protect ourselves from the everyday problems and the investments of the material energy. When we chant we are safe and any time we offer the Lord a service, He sees and appreciates, because He knows we have thought of Him and we are coming back to His arms like a lost child.Every time you get an opportunity offer the Lord your best with love, He will definitely appreciate that and as the quote above says, become satisfied and we will become successful.
Wishing you a wonderful weekend.
your servant,
Aruna devi

Mukunda Charan das, SA: Mumbai To Mayapur, March 2001
A Ukrainian devotee, Lokesvara prabhu, accompanied me from Grant Road Station to Victoria Station. We spent our time blissfully talking about Krishna consciousness. We were cutting it fine as the local train pulled into Victoria Station a few minutes before 8pm. Would I make it in time for the 8:15pm train to Howrah? I wasn’t sure. Lokesvara helped me find my train. I looked for my seat on the list at the side of the coach, and gave Lokesvara a rushed hug. I browsed the section marked ’1-72′, looking for my seat – number 50. I was pleasantly surprised to find an Indian brahmacari and an elderly South American couple in my compartment. The Indian monk, Padmanabha, offered me capatis and a piece of cake – maha-prasada from Radha-Rasabihari. I told my devotee travelling companions that I was most grateful to be travelling in their association. Padmanabha said, ‘No! No, prabhu! We are happy to be travelling with you! It is a blessing to travel with devotees’. I humbly beseeched the devotees to please pray that I might have the association of devotees at the time of death.
Padmanabha squeezed onto his bunk – to accomodate a steel vanity-case containing mataji’s Gaura-Nitai Deities. He very kindly offered the elderly mataji his bunk. Even though he looked very uncomfortable, he never complained. That night I dreamt of Maharaja. I was at the Ayurvedic Chemist by the Jain Temple in Mira Road. Maharaja was there with his personal servants, Stoka Krishna and Siksastakam prabhus. I hid because I did not want Maharaja to be bothered by seeing me yet again. Maharaja noticed me, in spite of my efforts to conceal myself. I said, ‘I am sorry for any offences I might have made’. Maharaja replied, ‘That’s good’. I had a second dream where I was walking through some dark streets with a group of friends. We were filled with a sense of expectation. We walked past a school hall lit by a scattering of electric lamps. In my last dream, I was on an Indian train which had bunks going up six or seven levels. I was on one of the top bunks. The South American devotees, Advaita Charan prabhu and his wife, were there. I had a conversation with a sulky twelve-year old American gurukuli. I said to him, ‘You were in Maya during the school holidays, weren’t you?’ He pouted in a contemptuous way, avoiding eye contact. I think he was unhappy his holidays were over. Then Savya Saci, my friend from the Bhaktivedanta Hospital, entered the compartment. Savya Saci was grinning in his characteristic way. I was happy. At least we could say goodbye to each other properly.
The next day I woke up and reflected on my good fortune – I am so happy to have such a kind and beautiful spiritual master. Krishna has been most kind to me.
It wouldn’t be long before the train arrived at Howrah Station.

H.H. Satsvarupa das Goswami (Ret.): 323—Poem for May 27
4:49 A.M.
A Writer of PiecesNew format—I will begin with a poem written on the day of its printing. Then I will print random excerpts of books I have printed over the last 35 years. I hope this variety will be pleasing.
Poem for May 27
Japa completed swiftly,
mechanically, hearing the names
in my mind. You feel assurance
from the scriptures’ assertion that
even namabhasa brings liberation
from sin, but Krishna-prema
eludes you.Uddhava was telling the pastimes of Krishna
in the Third Canto, a mini-version of
the expanded Tenth Canto. Devotees
don’t like to hear the disappearance of
the Lord, so he began with Krishna’s
appearance as the son of Devaki in the
prison house of the King of Bhoja.
There was no need of Krishna to be afraid
of Kamsa, but to fulfill the desires
of Yasoda and Nanda, He was transferred
to Gokula where actually Yasoda gave
birth to the original Krishna and Subhadra
and Vasudeva merged the baby of Devaki
into Yasoda’s son, and he took the girl
back to Mathura where she would
show Kamsa her appearance as eight-armed
Durga with weapons and calling
him a rascal: ‘Krishna has
already been born somewhere in
the world.’It is good to have Narayana
back, he talks of Trinidad
and reads the Bhagavatam at lunch,
his friendly presence in the early
morning to wake the Deities
and give me eyedrops.
The ashram is normal
now with three. He
asks me if I want to go
to New York City Ratha-yatra.Yesterday Saci, Keli and
Gaura-vani were on the radio
talking of Mantralogy and the
host played recordings of the
Mayapuris and Saci spoke
how the mantra cleans the
heart from dust of many
lives and makes us happy
in the soul in a natural
way. It was a great
radio show with
the maha-mantra played
for many minutes.Talking to Krishna early
in the morning before
Narayana comes up.
I want to be close
to Him and make
words of supplication
and praise from my
simple voice but
in disciplic succession.
To touch Krishna with
the mind or words or
names is complete
perfection and makes
the day complete. After this I can
rest or if He
allows, some writing.• Email to a friend • •

H.H. Satsvarupa das Goswami (Ret.): OLD FRIENDS
From Life with the Perfect Master
“For me, Prabhupada’s daily massage was the high point of the day. It was supposed to begin at 11:15 in the morning, but sometimes he would be talking with guests at that time.
“In that case, I would put on my gamcha and sit conspicuously in his audience, hoping they would understand that it was time for his massage. Sometimes I even said, ‘Prabhupada, it is time for your massage.’ He would sometimes ignore me, or take the hint and manage to have the audience depart. I was always concerned that he start his massage on time, otherwise his lunch would be late and his whole afternoon schedule would be off.
“He would put on his gamcha and sit on the veranda floor in the late morning sunshine. I would rub mustard seed oil all over his body, starting with the top of his head, and he would relax, often with half-closed eyes, and allow his body to rock slightly with the movements of my massaging. It was lush in Bombay, and while sitting, Prabhupada could see the tops of the coconut trees against the blue skies. There were nice tropical breezes, and Prabupada called it a paradise. ‘Have you ever seen such a lush place?’ he asked, and he would speak of many things, but not as constantly as on the morning walk.
“Once he asked me how many hippies were in America and what they did. He would be silent for long periods and then suddenly ask something that was on his mind. Once he suddenly said, ‘I am not anxious to go to Goloka Vrndavana. I just want to expose all these rascals who pretend to be yogis and swamis.’ Another time he suddenly asked, ‘Where in the world can I go where there will be no visitors and I can simply be alone to write my books?’
“Sometimes an intimate devotee like Giriraja would come in, and Prabhupada would forget that I was massaging. Once I went on massaging his back for forty-five minutes while he talked with Giriraja. Prabhupada began one conversation with him saying, ‘Giriraja, you are the leader here. You should dress more nicely and respectably. But there’s a saying that if one is a leader, it doesn’t matter how he dresses; he will be known as a leader.’ All these exchanges, which I witnessed mostly from the position of an almost-silent masseur, were indescribably delightful.
“For me, something as ordinary as sleeping at night was special because I was in a bed only a few feet from Srila Prabhupada. He slept in a bed under a mosquito net, and I was under another mosquito net on the veranda. I would regularly hear him rise at one or two A.M. and hear his voice dictating the purports. I never tired of that, and in fact I never tired of anything about Srila Prabhupada. No matter how close I lived with him, I never saw him do anything that would indicate that he was anything but a pure devotee, constantly and always on the highest level.
“I was no longer cooking, but I would help Prabhupada’s Bombay cook, Palika, cut up fruit for His Divine Grace every morning. We were able to get a nice assortment of fresh fruits—watermelons, papayas, bananas, apples, kitus—and different kinds of cashews and other nuts. People were always bringing sweets also, and sometimes Prabhupada would eat some chuddy noodles. That was breakfast. For lunch Palika would cook shukta, which Prabhupada was regularly taking. Sometimes in the evenings he would take milk, and perhaps a sweet, or something he asked me to cook. Or sometimes he asked me to cook something simple like peanuts. One evening he asked me to make eggplant pooki. While I was frying the sliced eggplant in ghee, Prabhupada came into the kitchen, watched what I was doing and said, ‘Actually, I am not hungry, but I am doing this to teach you how to cook.’ When I brought in the eggplant along with a cup of milk, he said, ‘Think how busy Krishna is. He’s in the heart of every living entity.’ Living with Prabhupada meant that at any moment, you could expect for no apparent or official reason he would suddenly be speaking of Krishna.
‘Yes,’ I responded, ‘if an ordinary person is too busy, he gets confused.’
Prabhupada laughed. ‘And yet,’ he said, ‘Krishna is with Radharani and the gopis and simultaneously with His queens in Dvaraka. This is God.’
From The Twenty-six Qualities of a Devotee
“A devotee is indifferent to material acquisitions, aniha.
“Sometimes a specific quality of the Vaisnava will come forth and shine, just as at night a certain star may first appear and then others. On other occasions, another quality may be called for and come forth. And sometimes, like blossoms on a tree in spring, many show at once. The pure devotee is capable of showing one quality after another, not as a theatrical performance but as is needed in the course of rendering service to Krishna and the Vaisnavas. And all the transcendental qualities come naturally to him, without separate effort, as integral parts of his Krishna consciousness.
“We should not demand a consistency according to material standards in a devotee’s display of these qualities. His meekness does not mean he cannot on occasion become angry. Detachment does not mean he cannot use material things in the service of Krishna. The devotee is consistent, but not in a small-minded way. All a devotee’s actions are consistent with his rendering pure, unalloyed service to Krishna.
“The quality of aniha, indifference to material acquisition, is another part of the Vaisnava’s opulence. He doesn’t have to acquire things because he is already satisfied in devotional service. A devotee may use material things in the service of Krishna, but he doesn’t become attached or dependent on them. He may serve Krishna with millions of dollars, construct buildings, and profusely publish Krishna conscious literatures; but even if he has nothing material to use, he can serve Krishna just by chanting Hare Krishna.
“This quality is well-illustrated in the story of the oldest man. There was once a sage who was so old his years could hardly be calculated. He was supposed to live until all the hairs on his body fell out, but only one hair would fall out during one lifetime of Brahma (311,040,000,000 years). The sage was very hairy, so his lifespan was incalculable. Once the sage’s disciples approached him, desiring to build him a shelter. ‘Master,’ they said, ‘you have no shelter from the sun or rain as you chant Hare Krishna here on the bank of the Ganges. May we please build you a simple cottage?’ The sage replied, ‘No. This life is temporary.’
“The temporality of life in this material world makes the devotee-transcendentalist neglectful about acquiring ‘possessions’ that he will sooner or later have to leave behind. So this is the basis for his indifference to material acquisitions. The very word ‘material’ implies temporality. And ultimately, material things are lost at death. But kama, the desire for getting and keeping material things, will cause a person to suffer birth after birth.
“The devotee is indifferent to the triumph of winning some post or prize, nor does he like to go out and buy things for himself. (Although he loves to shop for Krishna’s service.) He doesn’t want a wife, a trophy, or a post. He doesn’t want to put the stuffed head of an animal on his wall or keep extra clothes or ornaments or special foods. He remains materially poor with his heart clear of all material acquisitions, even though he uses many things in the service of the Lord. The world emperor Maharaja Pariksit, although surrounded by great opulence, remained unaffected because he used everything in the service of the Lord. But when he received seven days’ notice of his death, he thought it better to leave all his royal paraphernalia to sit by the Ganges without eating or drinking and hear Srimad-Bhagavatam from Sukadeva Gosvami.
“A devotee must be firmly situated in the realization of his spiritual identity, aham brahmasmi. He knows he is not this body, and he experiences the satisfaction of the spirit soul, brahma-bhuta-prasannatma. Being firmly situated in the higher consciousness, a devotee’s quality of aniha flourishes. He does not become attracted to material things, even though for preaching purposes he may have to associate with women and money, the most dangerous material allurements. Once someone asked Srila Prabhupada whether, since he was a swami, he could stab a knife into his hand without feeling pain. Such a feat, Srila Prabhupada replied, was not perfection. In fact it could be done just by taking an anesthetic. He said ‘swami’ actually meant that one can be in the presence of beautiful women yet be unaffected by them.
“A devotee does the compassionate work of staying within materialistic society rather than hiding in seclusion to save himself; he moves amid material attractions and disturbances. He therefore must have the quality of aniha. The devotee practices aniha bravely, and sometimes approaches persons who are fully absorbed in material life. Sometimes he sits with a karmi and tells him of Krishna consciousness, and sometimes he is offered material attractions and material troubles. But he remains always aniha and also draws the sense gratifier away from material acquisition.
“All glories to the peaceful Vaisnavas situated in aniha, who are delivering the entire world. How wonderful Krishna has blessed His pure devotees. The more we describe their qualities, the more we can see the Vaisnava’s qualities are there for the benefit of others. The devotees live among us to teach us to free ourselves from unwanted things and to become attracted to the lotus feet of Krishna, where the pure devotees themselves are firmly situated.”
From Japa Walks, Japa Talks
“Govardhana dasi gave me numerous questions, but they are interrelated. They are what we would call ‘mental’ questions. She said that if she tries to keep bringing the mind back from its wanderings to pay attention to the holy name, then she can’t pay attention to the sound of the holy name at the same time. She said she used to find chanting sweet when she was smaller. ‘I had more simple faith in the sweetness. I think I’m more complicated now and try to realize everything with my senses.’ Alas, we grow up and get complicated and mental. Christ says we have to become like children in order to enter the kingdom of God.
“She also had some nice things to say: ‘When I’m chanting in a reflective mood, I’ll have deep thoughts about my spiritual life. How should I take advantage of this positive energy. It’s offensive to harinama to interrupt my japa and note them down, but I feel if I don’t capture these thoughts, they’ll flutter away for good.
“So write down your thoughts briefly and then let them go. Trust that if they are really good thoughts, they will return. If not, we should be able to recapture some of them from our notes, if Krishna desires. Of course, we should be cautious about all these thoughts that come to us while we are supposed to be at prayer. Therefore, after giving them some deference in a small note, let Krishna speak in our utterance of the holy names.
“Govardhana dasi remarked that she feels happy she’s keeping her vow to chant sixteen rounds, even though many initiated devotees have given up their vow. But this also has the effect of making her think there is no immediate need for improvement. She’s satisfied at least to be chanting. It’s strange how our minds want to stop our progress. If actually we’re happy about something as preliminary as honoring our vow, then how much happier we will be when we improve the quality of that chanting.
“This reminds me of the irate mother who came to see Srila Prabhupada in the early days of ISKCON. She was disturbed that her son had become a disciple. Prabhupada told her that her son was happy to be a devotee, but she took a defensive stance: ‘He was already happy at home.’ Prabhupada countered, ‘But now he has become even happier.’ Why shouldn’t we become happier? Sixteen rounds a day is nothing. It’s only a decent response to the promise that we made at the time of initiation. We can offer a lot more than that as guru-daksina, and we can become happier. Lord Caitanya says anandam buddhi vardhanam: the chanting of the holy names is an ocean of ever-increasing happiness.
“What a stingy thought it is to say that ‘I’m all right and don’t need to do more because, unlike so many renegade disciples, I do my bit.’
“Yes, do your bit, but with real quality.
“Furthermore, to keep the status quo we have to push ourselves on to further achievements. In his purports to the Ajamila chapters in the Sixth Canto, Prabhupada mentions that at any moment a devotee could fall from his exalted position. That happened to Ajamila in his youth. In Kali-yuga we are dangerously exposed to illicit sex wherever we turn. Unless we pray with quality while chanting the holy names, we could fall. Where will our complacency be then?
“Govardhana dasi remembers fondly when she was ‘very small’ and a member of the girls’ ashram at the Gita-nagari gurukula. I also remember those days. I used to visit their classroom, I would sit in the rocking chair and chant a round with them. They seemed to seek childish recognition. Prabhupada said such motivation was not a bad thing in a child. At least it can become a motivator for something good.
“The teacher used to keep a chart of their daily japa performance on the board. The children would get different colored stars according to their chanting. I think gold stars were even pasted on the foreheads of the smaller kids.
“We still secretly maintain the desire to achieve gold stars next to our names. Look what I’ve done! I’ve chanted more than sixteen rounds. I stayed awake. I tasted the nectar! Don’t tell anyone, Prabhu, but I tasted the tears.
“Is there a star for aridity? I don’t think there’s a star for offensive chanting, is there? Is there a star for just trying?
“Yes, yes, all stars, colored stars, red ones, green ones, blue and gold stars. Now let’s get back to chanting: Hare Krishna, Hare Krishna, Krishna Krishna, Hare Hare/ Hare Rama, Hare Rama, Rama Rama, Hare Hare.”

Subhavilasa das ACBSP, Toronto, CA: Tomorrow is Ekadasi. The Glories of Apara Ekadasi
Sri Yudhishthira Maharaj said, "Oh Janardana, what is the name of the Ekadasi that occurs during the dark fortnight (krishna paksha) of the month of Jyeshtha (May-June)? I wish to hear from You the glories of this sacred day of Hari. Please narrate everything to me" Lord Sri Krishna said, "Oh king, your inquiry is wonderful because the answer will benefit the whole human society. This Ekadasi is so sublime and meritorious that even the greatest sins can be erased by its purity.
"Oh great saintly king, the name of this unlimitedly meritorious Ekadasi is Apara Ekadasi. Whoever fasts on this holy day becomes famous all over the universe. Even such sins as killing a brahmana, a cow, or an embryo; blasphemy; or having sex with another man's wife are completely eradicated by observing Apara Ekadasi.
Oh king people who bear false witness are most sinful. A person who falsely or sarcastically glorifies another; one who cheats while weighing something on a scale; one who fails to execute the duties of his varna or Ashrama (an unqualified man's posing as a brahmin, for example, or a person's reciting the Vedas wrongly); one who invents his own scriptures; one who cheats others; one who is a charlatan astrologer, a cheating accountant, or a false Ayurvedic doctor. All these are surely as bad as persons who bears false witness, and they are all destined for hellish punishments. But simply by observing Apara Ekadasi, all such sinners become completely free of their sinful reactions.
Warriors who fall from their kshatriya-dharma and flee the battlefield go to a ferocious hell. But, Oh Yudhishthira, even such a fallen kshatriya, if he observes fasting on the Apara Ekadasi, is freed of that great sinful reaction and goes to heaven. That disciple is the greatest sinner who, after receiving a proper spiritual education from his spiritual master, turns around and blasphemes him. Such a so-called disciple suffers unlimitedly. But even he, rascal though he be, if he simply observes Apara Ekadasi, can attain to the spiritual world.
Listen, Oh king, as I describe to you further glories of this amazing Ekadasi. The merit attained by one who performs all of the following acts of piety is equal to the merit achieved by one who observes Apara Ekadasi: bathing three times daily in Pushkara-kshetra during Kartika (October-November); bathing at Prayag in the month of Magh (January-February) when the sun is in the zodiac of Capricorn; rendering service to Lord Shiva at Varanasi (Benares) during Shiva-ratri; offering oblations to one's forefathers at Gaya; bathing in the sacred Gautami River when Jupiter transits Leo (Simha); having darshan of Lord Shiva at Kedarnatha; seeing Lord Badrinath when the Sun transits the sign of Aquarius (Kumbha); and bathing at the time of a solar eclipse at Kurukshetra and giving cows, elephants, and gold there in charity. All the merit one gets from performing these pious acts is gained by a person who observes the Apara Ekadasi fast. Also, the merit attained by one who donates a pregnant cow, along with gold and fertile land, is attained by one who fasts on this day.
In other words, Apara Ekadasi is an axe that cuts down the fully matured forest full of trees of sinful deeds, it is a forest fire that burns sins as if they were kindling firewood, it is the sun blazing before one's dark misdeeds, and it is a lion stalking the meek deer of impiety. Therefore, Oh Yudhishthira, whoever truly fears his past and present sins must observe Apara Ekadasi very strictly. One who does not observe this fast must be born again in the material world, like one bubble among millions in a huge body of water, or like a small ant among all other species. Therefore one must faithfully observe the sacred Apara Ekadasi and worship the Supreme Personality of Godhead, Sri Trivikrama. One who does so is freed of all his sins and promoted to the abode of Lord Vishnu.
Oh Bharata, for the benefit of all humanity I have thus described to you this the importance of the holy Apara Ekadasi. Anyone who hears or reads this description is certainly freed from all kinds of sins, oh best of saintly kings, Yudhishthira. Thus ends the narration of the glories of Jyeshtha-krishna Ekadasi, or Apara Ekadasi, from the Brahmanda Purana.
Mañana es Ekadasi. Las Glorias del Apara Ekādaśī
sábado 7 de abril de 2007
GVY: Apara Ekādaśī

APARA EKADASI

Nityananda Chandra Das, Dallas TX: TEXAS FAITH 43: What gives rise to end-times predictions?
Dallas Morning News,Each week we will post a question to a panel of about two dozen clergy, laity and theologians, all of whom are based in Texas or are from Texas. They will chime in with their responses to the question of the week. And you, readers, will be able to respond to their answers through the comment box.I had wanted to avoid the May 21st rapture debate because it seemed like so much of a chip shot. Even many who believe in one form or another of end-times theology have disagreed with the prediction of Harold Camping of the Family Radio Network. He's the fellow that predicted Judgment Day was to come Saturday. (As I understand it, Camping, a civil engineer, reached that conclusion by pegging May 21 to being exactly 7,000 years after Noah got caught in a flood.)
But his prediction has generated plenty of attention. And since Judgment Day didn't come, and we all are still here, let's deal with the underlying issue in this discussion. And that is the ongoing prediction of the world's end.
Camping is hardly the one to offer a precise date. The New York Times reports how Seventh-Day Adventist Robert Reidt long ago predicted February 6, 1925 as the day of reckoning. And the Christian Science Monitor last week catalogued five big examples of end-time dates, going back to one in 1844.
Here, then, is this week's question:
What gives rise to precise end-times predictions?
NITYANANDA CHANDRA DAS, minister of ISKCON (International Society for Krishna Consciousness), Dallas
It natural to expect change as we see in this world there are four seasons. Also, a lot of religious literature speaks about a change in times.
For example, the Vedas speak about this age, Kali yuga, and its end times. This end time is explained to be 427,000 years from now. But this event is cyclical, like our four seasons. Not an actual end of this world but rather a change in the spiritual direction of the populous.
Should end times be a motivation for religious renewal? According to the great saint Srila Bhaktivinoda Thakura, religious motivation based on fear is low-grade religion.
Why worry about end times, everyone already has there own end time to worry about. Even though America is technologically advanced, the death rate is still a steady 100%. Bhaktivinoda Thakura teaches that in general there four levels of religious motivation.
1) Bhaya -- out of fear.
2) Asha -- for satisfying material aspirations.
3) Kartavya-buddhi -- out of a sense of duty (literally, "a mentality of what should be done").
4) Räga -- out of genuine attraction for the Lord.
Lord Krishna similarly states in the Bhagavad Gita As It Is chapter 7 that there are those who approach God because of difficulties, those who approach because of material aspirations, those who approach because of inquisitiveness and those who approach because there are sincerely seeking the Absolute Truth.

Madhava Ghosh dasa, New Vrndavan, USA: Lowe’s Selects Sungevity For Residential Solar Partnership
MOORESVILLE, N.C. and OAKLAND, Calif.—May 16, 2011—Lowe’s, the world’s second largest home improvement retailer, and Sungevity, the nation’s fastest growing residential solar company today announced a new agreement that will offer homeowners the easiest and most affordable solar solutions in the marketplace, marking a significant step in the mainstream adoption of residential solar.
Through the agreement, Lowe’s will provide consumers with Sungevity’s quick, easy and proprietary iQuote, a process that utilizes satellite images and aerial photography to calculate a same-day, firm installation estimate, eliminating the need for a home visit. As part of the interactive, in-store experience, consumers will be able to view a rendering of the proposed installation and get a firm understanding of the cost-savings related to Sungevity’s innovative solar lease program.
Customers typically experience an immediate savings on their electricity bills through Sungevity’s solar lease, which includes monitoring, maintenance, repairs, insurance, and a money-back performance guarantee. Additionally, as part of the agreement, Lowe’s has taken an equity position in Sungevity.
“I am thrilled about the potential of reaching Lowe’s 15 million weekly customers at their more than 1,750 retail locations, with Sungevity’s services,” said Andrew Birch, chief executive officer, Sungevity. “This partnership marks a major acceleration point in our mission to make solar power easily accessible and affordable to homeowners nationwide.”
“Lowe’s has always delivered innovative energy solutions for our customers and we are seeing an increased demand for solar solutions,” explained Patti Price, senior vice-president, merchandising, Lowe’s. “Lowe’s new partnership with Sungevity responds to customer demand by providing a convenient and affordable process for going solar.”
The partnership will commence with interactive Sungevity branded displays in select Lowe’s stores, beginning Summer 2011, and continue to roll-out at all Lowe’s stores in states where Sungevity provides services. Sungevity currently operates in eight states, including Arizona, California, Colorado, Delaware, Maryland, Massachusetts, New Jersey and New York.

Japa Group: My Day's Realisation About Chanting
Here is my day's realisation about chanting - whatever situation we find ourselves in, whether that is dangerous or difficult (also when things are going well and smoothly) - we need to always chant the Holy names of Krsna and surrender to Him and think about Him in all these times.
How do we think of Krsna in very materially stressful or intense times? By chanting His Holy names and asking the Lord to help us and asking the Lord to allow us to remember Him in these times (and also in the very good times when there is no stress).
Today was a very difficult day - my phone needed repairing but instead of fixing it, the repairman swapped faulty internal parts to make it worst and changed the brand new battery for an old and useless one. When I confronted him with the facts he denied everything and wanted to charge me even more. Instead of getting angry and upset, I just relaxed inside and firmly told him to fix the phone properly but he refused.
After praying inside for the Lord to help and asking Krsna to allow me to remember Him in these intense hardships - the man must have realised his bad way and refunded all the money, including the money for the battery.
It taught me once again, that we need to avoid the lower modes of nature in these times and simply chant the Hare Krsna mantra always then we will be truly happy - when we chant very good Japa in the morning, the Lord will give us this rememberance.
Hare Krsna!

Mayapur Online: Sri Jagannatha Snan Yatra Festival
Snan-yatra, or the Lord's bathing festival, will take place on June 15, which is 14 days before Ratha-yatra. During the 14 days period the temple remains closed for darsana on the plea that Jagannatha Swami has caught a cold. It also enables the Deities to be repainted, or renewed. Still others say that the reason that Lord Jagannatha feigns sickness is to take a break...

A Soul
Toronto, Ontario
He was about ten years my senior and as my pace for walking overtook him I had many questions and thoughts milling through my mind about him.
Is he homeless? No! He's dressed rather well to mediocre. He was babbling. There was a sadness about him. His head was bent by the neck tilted to the side and almost resting on his chest as he walked. Something clinically not perfect here. I wanted to make eye contact, to offer at least a nod but he was set in moving ahead and didn't notice me. It wasn't really an aimless walk. In fact he forged ahead reather determinedly.
I meandered several streets chanting on my beads when I came upon him again. This time it was face on but he still didn't notice me. It seems he was on a wayward whimsical route as well. I looked back as he trailed his way down a lonely street with a babble and his head buried to his chest.
It was night. Where was this soul going? I only imagined he has a history and a karma that is unique to anyone else. Whether it is to be shared or not who knows? It crossed my mind that he knew pain. I admired him though for his walking about -- this mystery man. "He's making the best use of his situation," I thought.
Krishna, please bless him. Bless him a lot. He may have no friends except for you.

Hari Sauri das, Mayapura, IN: 2011 tour – Sydney 40th Anniversary and Reunion
My visit to Sydney
was the rationale for my whole tour. Everything else was window dressing for this main event:
the 40th anniversary of the installation of Their Lordships Sri Sri Radha Gopinatha and a grand get together of Srila Prabhupada’s disciples.
Sydney was the first place in Australia to be graced by Krsna’s devotees in early 1970 when Bali Mardan and Upendra prabhus arrived to spread the Krsna consciousness movement to a new continent.
A temple quickly sprang to life and in May 1971 Sri Sri Radha Gopinatha appeared along with Srila Prabhupada on his first visit. Despite the lack of qualified brahmana devotees Srila Prabhupada installed Their Lordships and when he left after one week he prayed to Them “Now I am leaving You in the hands of the mlecchas. You kindly look after Yourselves and give them the intelligence how to serve you nicely.”
A long story which is wonderfully narrated by Kurma prabhu in his book “The Great Transcendental Adventure”
For my first few days in residence prior to the main event I did a few sessions of my seminar
on the appropriate topic of “Deities”.
On the night before the festival commenced I took the opportunity to have dinner at the excellent Govinda’s restaurant in King’s Cross, with an old and dear friend Ken Davis.
Ken and I first met on the boat ‘Australis’ when I emigrated to Australia as a “£10 POM’ in 1971. I joined the movement a few months after landing and he went on to become a very successful and popular composer of health and relaxation music. You can hear and see a sample of ‘Endless Emotion’ one of his DVDs that has had 2.6 million hits on YouTube http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=21dfilSok-A
Ken and I first met on the boat ‘Australis’ when I emigrated to Australia as a “£10 POM’ in 1971
We had a great meal and catch up and Ken, who describes himself as a “Friend of Krsna”, promised to come for the festival.
