Bhakta Chuck, CT, USA: Friday Night Oxen #48

Hello Everyone,

Kerry

Kerry Cattle are an ancient breed with a lineage that can be traced back through time to the Celtic Shorthorn present in Ireland during the Roman Invasion. This makes the Kerry one of the oldest European breeds. Today, they are a rare breed and take their name from the county of Kerry in Southwest Ireland.

Kerry Cattle are black with small amounts of white allowed on the underside. With cows weighing 800 lbs. and bulls weighing 1000 lbs., they might be a good fit for small Family Cow undertakings.

Although the Kerry is a durable breed, capable of producing moderate amounts of quality milk from meager resources, The American Livestock Breeds Conservancy has placed the breed on their critical list, generally siting crossbreeding and displacement by more productive milking breeds.

Organizations such as the Rare Breeds of Canada and the Kerry Cattle Society of Ireland are dedicated “to do all such things necessary to promote and maintain the purity of the breed”.

Presently, I am not able to find any actual pictures of Kerry Oxen Teams.

Have a nice weekend, in service to the Oxen,

ys, Chuck

Kurma dasa, AU: Happy Gaura Purnima

Gauranga:

kaivalyam narakayate tri-dasa-pur akasha-puspayate, durdantendriya-kala-sarpa-patali protkhata-damstrayate, vishvam purnam-sukhayate vidhi-mahendradis ca kitiyate, yat karunya-kataksa-vaibhavavatam tam gauram eva stumah.

(Chaitanya-candramrta, verse 5)

"For those who have attained the merciful sidelong glance of Lord Gaura, impersonal liberation becomes as palatable as going to hell, the heavenly cities of the demigods become as real as flowers imagined to float in the sky, the poisonous fangs of the untameable black snakes of the senses become broken, the whole world becomes full of joy, and Brahma, Indra, and all the great demigods become like tiny insects. Let us glorify that Lord Gaura."

H.G. Sankarshan das Adhikari, USA: Saturday 19 March 2011--Appearance Day of Lord Caitanya--and--An Indecisive Kid in a Candy Shop

A daily broadcast of the Ultimate Self Realization Course(TM) Saturday 19 March 2011 The Supreme Personality of Godhead, Lord Sri Krishna, and His eternal consort, Srimati Radharani are enjoying transcendental pastimes in the topmost planet of the spiritual world, Sri Goloka Vrindavan. They are beckoning us to rejoin them. (Click on photo to see a larger image.) Our Mission: To help everyone awaken their original Krishna consciousness, which is eternal, full of knowledge and full of bliss. Such a global awakening will, in one stroke, solve all the problems of the world society bringing in a new era of unprecedented peace and prosperity for all. May that day, which the world so desperately needs, come very soon. We request you to participate in this mission by reviving your dormant Krishna consciousness and assisting us in spreading this science all over the world. Dedicated with love to ISKCON Founder-Acharya: His Divine Grace A.C. Bhaktivedanta Swami Prabhupada, our beloved spiritual master, and to you, our dear readers. Today's Thought: Appearance Day of Lord Caitanya Uploaded from Bhaktivedanta Ashram--Austin, Texas USA What day can be more auspicious than the appearance day of Sri Caitanya Mahaprabhu? He is Krishna Himself appearing in His most merciful manifestation to bestow freely upon all without any restriction pure love of Godhead. It is up to us to now take full advantage of His unlimited mercy and easily qualify ourselves to go back to home, back to Godhead at the end of this lifetime. The wonderful mercy of Lord Caitanya and His associates is described as follows in the Sri Caitanya Caritamrita, Adi Lila, Chapter Seven, Verse 163: ei pañca-tattva-rpe r-krsna-caitanya krsna-nma-prema diy viva kail dhanya Sri Krishna Caitanya Mahaprabhu and His associates of the Pañca-tattva distributed the holy name of the Lord to invoke love of Godhead throughout the universe, and thus the entire universe was thankful. In his purport to this verse Srila Prabhupada writes: Here it is said that Lord Caitanya made the entire universe thankful to Him for propagating the sankirtana movement with His associates. Lord Caitanya Mahaprabhu has already sanctified the entire universe by His presence five hundred years ago, and therefore anyone who attempts to serve Sri Caitanya Mahaprabhu sincerely by following in His footsteps and following the instructions of the acaryas will successfully be able to preach the holy names of the Hare Krishna maha-mantra all over the universe. Sankarshan Das Adhikari Sri Caitanya Mahaprabhu, the Golden Avatar http://www.backtohome.com/images/Krishna/Caitanya.jpg Answers According to the Vedic Version: Question: An Indecisive Kid in a Candy Shop I am feeling like a child who's daddy just gave me a nickel so that I could buy a piece of candy. I am standing in front of the candy now and there are hundreds of different kinds, and I can't decide which one to buy. There's the God candy, Krishna, Rama, Jesus, Buddha, Oneness and Shiva candy, which is the one that I should pick? Which is the real piece of candy and not just the fancy wrapping? It's the dreams again. I've been in the Catholic dream, born again Christian dream, Tao, Eck, SGI, and now Hindu dream among others? How do I awaken from the illusions and find the truth? Joe Answer: Take the Medicine and Enjoy the Candy Your question is very nice. A similar example is that of someone entering a pharmacy and finding hundreds of different medicines. How will he know which is the proper medicine to take? It is not difficult. He simply has to accept the medicine which his physician has prescribed and take it exactly according to his physician's instructions. Then there will be no difficulty. He will be cured. The physician is the bona fide spiritual master and the bona fide spiritual master is that teacher who understands perfectly how to engage his disciple in following the Vedic wisdom so that he will quickly be delivered from the dangerous ocean of birth, death, old age, and disease. At the present moment we cannot taste the candy of pure love of Godhead, because we are in a diseased condition. But after being cured under the guidance of the bona fide spiritual master, we will be able to relish the sweetest candy of pure love of God at every minute. Vraja Kishor, JP: The Real Secret of Spirituality

This is what goes down in the 9th chapter of Bhagavad Gita…

Krsna: I will now tell you the greatest secret. Only those who trust me can understand it.

Arjuna: Why do some people not trust you?

K: Because they think I am ordinary. As such they either ignore me, or hold me responsible for their own suffering. I am not ordinary, I am the source of everything, and am neutral and fair to everyone.

A: What about people who do trust you?

K: Those great souls take shelter of my divine energy (Sri Radha) and she engages them sweetly in my loving services: constantly doing my kirtan and striving with great determination to please my senses.

A: What about people who are not sure?

K: They appreciate spirituality and religion but do not yet directly embrace me as the main point behind and within all of it.

A: Those who mistrust you attain karmic bondage, what about those who are not sure?

K: They attain heaven for sometime as a result of their partial goodness. Then they return to karmic bondage – despite all their endeavors.

A: What about those who trust and love you?

K: The surpass even heaven and attain me personally, eternally.

A: Is that fair?

K: Yes. You get the results of what you do. If you worship karmic things you get karmic results. Partially karmic things, give you partially karmic results. If you worship me, you get me. It is perfectly fair.

A: How do we worship you?

K: It is not difficult like other paths. I just takes love. With love, even a fruit or flower (etc) becomes suitable for divine worship. Whatever you have or do can become divine worship for me, when you use it to express your love for me.

A: Is it fair that karmic religion is so difficult, but devotion is so simple and easy?

K: Yes it is fair. If you want to elevate yourself on your own efforts (karma) I let you. If you want to depend on me and give your whole self to me (bhakti), I let you. I am being entirely fair. There is no partiality in me being apathetic to those who are apathetic to me, and being endearing to those who endear themselves to me!

A: Since devotion to you is so powerful, is there some special qualification one needs before one can take to this spiritual path?

K: No, I am open to everyone and anyone. Even if by other standards they are very “sinful” (30) I welcome their love always and allow them swift spiritual progress as a result of their devotion. (31)

Even if they are barbarians with no idea of Vedic culture, I welcome their love with open arms! Even if they are bared from religious and intellectual circles like Vedic culture bars women, workers, and money-men – still I welcome their love with open arms. (32) And of course if they are cultured kings and philosophers I welcome their love also. (33)

I am impartial to all! Anyone who offers me love, purchases my heart with their affection! I never forget them!

A: Please once again declare how we should show you our love!

K: Man-Mana!!!! Put me in your mind!
Mad-Bhakta!!! Consider yourself my lover / friend!!!
Mad-Yaji!!! Out of love, try to please my senses!
Mam-Namaskara!!! Show me respect!

Man evaishyasi yuktva-ivam!!! In any and all ways just always link yourself to me!

Atmaanaam Mat Paraayanah!!!! DO IT WITH YOUR HEART! DO IT WITH YOUR SOUL!! Give your heart to me! (34)

ISKCON Melbourne, AU: Today's Darsana

19/03/11
It is an absolute explosion of vibrant orange and bright red today.
Yes! It is that most flamboyant of all the Deities' sets, from last year's Krishna Janmastami.

All Their Ladyships are divinely clad in a sari too! And what's more is that Sri Sri Jagannatha and Balarama are both in a dhoti, which allows us the good fortune to have darsana of Their lotus feet.

A picture speaks more than a thousand words; so here is Their
darsana.

Here are verses 17 & 18 from the Sri Gauranga Ashtottara Shata Nama Stotram composed by Sarvabhauma Bhattacharya.

These are the final 13 of the 108 different names of Sri Chaitanya Mahaprabhu with the final set of the 108 pictures which we tried to match to the Gauranga's merciful qualities described by each name,

The next post reveals the importance of this Strotram and thus on Gaura Purnima day there will be a final post in this series to allow all of us to share in the immense benefit of taking these names of Sri Chaitanya Mahaprabhu!

So the completion of the 108 names means that Gauranga is almost here! Gauranga! Gauranga! Garuranga!!!

Over the last week as we prepared the posts and matched pictures of Mahaprabhu, there was so much nectar. In fact we need to "tag" or categorize the post before publishing and we filed each post under "nectar". So the last of the 108 names is Sandohamrita-rupa-dhrik and this means the He embodies the form of all universal NECTAR. Gauranga! Gauranga! His Name, Fame, Form, Qualities and Teaching are all pure and sweet NECTAR.

The posts have all been sweet nectar. Capturing, enjoying, posting and sharing the artwork of so many devotees of Mahaprabhu has also been sweet nectar. Gauranga is nectar. His sankirtan movement is nectar. He is Sandohamrita-rupa-dhrik! Thank you Srila Prabhupada, we were immersed in darkness and you have given us access to this nectar.

Gauranga bol! Gauranga bol! Gauranga! Gauranga!

Akrura das, Gita Coaching: YOU CAN CATCH KRSNA

So Krsna is everywhere, and if you are devotee, then you can catch Him. This is the secret.

Just like electricity is everywhere, electrons. One who can tackle the electrons, they can talk without any direct connection by electronic method, thousand thousand miles away.

Just like radio message, television message. So similarly, Krsna is also everywhere.

Just like the waves of sound wave is going on. As soon as you produce, I produce one sound, immediately within a second the sound goes round the earth seven times.

So if a material thing has got so much power, just think how much power God has got. So He is everywhere. Simply you have to catch Him. And He's also ready for being caught. Yes. If somebody wants to catch Him...

Suppose you are a devotee. If you want to catch Him, He comes forward ten times than your desire. He's so kind. Therefore, we have to simply receive Him.

Researchers tracked the pesticides’ breakdown products in children’ urine and found those with high levels were almost twice as likely to develop ADHD as those with undetectable levels.

The findings are based on data from the general U.S. population, meaning that exposure to the pesticides could be harmful even at levels commonly found in children’s environment.

“There is growing concern that these pesticides may be related to ADHD,” said researcher Marc Weisskopf of the Harvard School of Public Health, who worked on the study.

“What this paper specifically highlights is that this may be true even at low concentrations.”

Organophosphates were originally developed for chemical warfare, and they are known to be toxic to the nervous system.

There are about 40 organophosphate pesticides such as malathion registered in the United States, the researchers wrote in the journal Pediatrics.

Weisskopf said the compounds have been linked to behavioral symptoms common to ADHD — for instance, impulsivity and attention problems — but exactly how is not fully understood.

Although the researchers had no way to determine the source of the breakdown products they found, Weisskopf said the most likely culprits were pesticides and insecticides used on produce and indoors.

Garry Hamlin of Dow AgroSciences, which manufactures an organophosphate known as chlorpyrifos, said he had not had time to read the report closely.

But, he added” “the results reported in the paper don’t establish any association specific to our product chlorpyrifos.”

Weisskopf and colleagues’ sample included 1,139 children between 8 and 15 years. They interviewed the children’s mothers, or another caretaker, and found that about one in 10 met the criteria for ADHD, which jibes with estimates for the general population.

After accounting for factors such as gender, age and race, they found the odds of having ADHD rose with the level of pesticide breakdown products.

For a 10-fold increase in one class of those compounds, the odds of ADHD increased by more than half. And for the most common breakdown product, called dimethyl triophosphate, the odds of ADHD almost doubled in kids with above-average levels compared to those without detectable levels.

“That’s a very strong association that, if true, is of very serious concern,” said Weisskopf. “These are widely used pesticides.”

He emphasized that more studies are needed, especially following exposure levels over time, before contemplating a ban on the pesticides. Still, he urged parents to be aware of what insecticides they were using around the house and to wash produce.

“A good washing of fruits and vegetables before one eats them would definitely help a lot,” he said.

H.H. Satsvarupa das Goswami (Ret.): 253–Poem for March 18th

www.sdgonline.org. SDGonline Daily updates

5:55 A.M.

A Writer of Pieces

New format–I will begin with a poem written on the day of its printing. Then I will print random excerpts of books I have printed over the last 30 years. I hope this variety will be pleasing.

Poem for March 18th

Radha and Krishna are eternally
engaged in uninterrupted blissful
pastimes in Goloka Vrndavana.
Meanwhile in the Vaikuntha planet,
Lord Visnu feels the periodic
urge to create material world
and give the conditioned souls another
chance to develop love of God.

Without the aid of His consort Laksmi,
He glances over the material nature
and injects the living beings into
life in the species of material being.

They are born all at once from
the topmost demigods down to
the insignificant ants and
the Lord is pleased with His work.
But the asuras start to misbehave
and He has to police their actions.
At the same time, pure devotees
like Narada and the Kumaras appear
and Lord Brahma appears and
they start the bhakti-sampradayas.

These are the great projects
that are inaugurated at
the start of every creation.
Radha-Krishna and all the vrajavasis are aloof
from it all and play
their sweet lilas
in the fields of Vrajabumi.
Lord Caitanya has given us
an easy path to join
them and get out of
the mechanics of the
birth and death cycle
of fourfold miseries.
Prabhupada came to teach
us the way and we are
engaged according to our capacity
on the back-to-Godhead route.
I pray we can improve
and sense the urgency
to chant Hare Krishna and
tell everyone we meet
about Radha and Krishna.
That is our only hope
for escape from
the doldrums of samsara.

H.H. Satsvarupa das Goswami (Ret.): OLD FRIENDS

www.sdgonline.org. SDGonline Daily updates

From The Week Before Gaura-Purnima (1994)

“Mama said maybe she and Maria’s father could at least go to Verona and at least see it as bystanders.

“‘Don’t expect us to chant,’ said her mother. ‘Hare Krishna, Hare Krishna, Krishna Krishna, Hare Hare.’

“‘You know the mantra?’

“‘Yes, Hare Rama, Hare Rama, Rama Rama, Hare Hare.’

“‘Ah!’

“Together they said it: Hare Krishna, Hare Krishna, Krishna Krishna, Hare Hare/ Hare Rama, Hare Rama, Rama Rama, Hare Hare—and laughed.”

Chapter 11

“They left him alone for a few hours in the morning, and he prepared for the next morning’s class. This would be Gaura Purnima among the devotees. He selected the fourth verse of the first chapter of Adi-lila, anarpita-carim cirat karunayavatirnah kalau:

“Mama said she and Maria could go to Verona and at least see it as bystanders.

“‘Don’t expect us to chant,’ said her mother. ‘Hare Krishna, Hare Krishna, Krishna Krishna, Hare Hare.’

“‘You know the mantra?’

“‘Yes, Hare Rama, Hare Rama, Rama Rama, Hare Hare.’

“‘Ah!’

“Together they said it: ‘Hare Krishna, Hare Krishna, Krishna Krishna, Hare Hare/ Hare Rama, Hare Rama, Rama Rama, Hare Hare’—and laughed.

Chapter Eleven

“They left him alone for a few hours in the morning, and he prepared for the next morning’s class. This would be Gaura Purnima among the devotees. He selected the fourth verse of the first chapter of Adi-lila, anarpita-carim cirat karunayavatirnah kalau:

“May that Lord, who is known as the Son of Srimati Sacidevi, be transcendentally situated in the innermost core of your heart. Resplendent with the radiance of molten gold, he has descended in the age of Kali by His causeless mercy to bestow what no incarnation has ever offered before: the most elevated mellow of devotional service, the mellow of conjugal love.

“He decided to lecture on the main Sanskrit words of the verse. The verse is a blessing to the readers from Krsnadasa Kaviraja’s spiritual master, Rupa Goswami. The phrase anarpita cherim charat indicates that for a long time He did not bestow his mercy upon the jivas. Not since he appeared as Lord Krishna in Vraja. This indicates that no other incarnation could give this intimate love of Krishna.

“Kalau means that He is the Kali-yuga avatara, and He will give sankirtana as the method to attain love of God. Ujjvala-rasa means conjugal love. He tasted Radha-bhava but offered manjari-bhava–that is the revelation of the Six Gosvamis, especially Rupa and Raghunatha Gosvamis.

“(Wait a minute. You just got cleared by the raganuga investigation committee, so be careful. In fact, you didn’t even get cleared yet. But what am I supposed to do when Prabhupada gives out all this nectar.)

“Purata-sundara—this means He is golden, like Radharani.

“Rupa Goswami hopes that He may enter into our hearts in the innermost core. He is called Sacinandana here. This indicates that Mother Saci is kind, so He will be kind to bless us . . .

“Although these verses go deep into the nectar of Lord Caitanya’s confidential identity, we will also not forget that He is teaching us to do sankirtana, so here is a verse by Krishna dasa Kaviraja in the same chapter about that:

“‘Lord Sri Krishna Caitanya is the initiator of sankirtana. One who worships Him through sankirtana is fortunate indeed. Such a person is truly intelligent, whereas others, who have but a poor fund of knowledge, must endure the cycle of repeated birth and death. Of all sacrificial performances, the chanting of the Lord’s holy name is the most sublime.’ (C.c. Adi 3.77-8)”

“The sannyasi gained confidence that in the morning he could give a more internal class about the inner meaning of Lord Caitanya, and then since it was Sunday, at the feast lecture He could speak more about the outgoing movement of  sankirtana.

“‘Yeah, yeah, it’ll be all right,’ thought the sannyasi. He looked out the window and saw the day was all gray. He hoped that they could go on with their harinama plans. He wanted to be part of them very much.

Chapter Twelve

“Author’s harinama report:

“It was nice. I joined them. Saw the camara-waving and was surprised, and maybe even embarrassed, that such an intimate worship of Gaura-Nitai was being done in public. It was the civilized old city with fashionable shops on either side of narrow, cobble-stoned streets. It was a mild spring dusk coming, and people strolling around, non-violent. The police were gentlemen, and one gray-haired officer with his officer’s cap walked in front as the procession began.

“One ox was black and one tan, both big. They wore orange cloths. They were completely under control with a ten-year-old boy at their heads and a devotee driver with reins and stick up on the cart. It was a simple, yellow-painted cart with non-rubber wheels. A throne on top for Gaura-Nitai and the main temple Gaura-Nitai Deities were there, just as They appeared in the temple in the morning, Lord Caitanya in pink and Lord Nityananda in blue. Both had sun designs embroidered on Their dresses, reminding you of the verse, ‘the Brothers have arisen together like the sun and moon over Gauda.’

“About a dozen young children sat peacefully on the cart, and one grhastha played harmonium and sang Hare Krishna. It was amplified through a loudspeaker on the rear of the cart. Maybe a total of fifteen or twenty adults were there, and we strung out double file behind the cart, singing in unison with karatalas and mrdangas. A few devotees wandered up to people with baskets of cookies and cards to hand out, and books.

“The oxen set a naturally slow pace, just perfect. The police were satisfied with it and no one was going to speed up or slow down the oxen’s steady gait. They dumped their wet dung occasionally, which landed in splotches on the Verona road.

“The visiting sannyasi clapped his hands and sometimes raised his hands and sang along, taking his place directly behind the cart while they were moving, and when stopped, he stood where he could see Gaura-Nitai’s feet. His attitude was, ‘I’m here and I’m chanting.’ As an American, he sensed his distance from the Italians in the plaza. He imagined someone approaching him and asking him a question and he would have to say, ‘I don’t speak Italian.’ But no one approached. Everything was mild, in order, but the main purpose was accomplished—distribution of the mercy of harinama.

“Cultured people, sitting on park benches, at the tables in outdoor cafes, some on the high ramparts of the stadium looking down. Many took photos and all of the cookies were given out and many cards. I saw our women and men talking to groups of people.
“As it darkened, we made a last lap around the plaza. Two gentlemen from Verona, policemen, came up to the biggest devotee, Dhama dasa, and inquired politely. He told them we would be leaving soon. They took his words mildly and like brothers in agreement.

“The oxen were the special attraction, so all glories to them. When we stopped, they passed into the street and no one objected. They drooled, but I don’t think it was such a strain for them. They endured it easily when people came up and dared to pet these tall, horned beasts. Maybe the oxen even enjoyed the attention, but they certainly did valuable service. All the devotees were lucky to serve this evening by public distribution of the holy names. We’ve been hearing every morning that there is no other way in Kali-yuga but chanting Hare Krishna mantra, so we did something, showed our belief, paraded on behalf of Lord Caitanya on the eve of His appearance day.

“Maria? Yes, she was there too. She was wearing a red jersey and over that, a sleeveless, padded jacket. She wore a sari and gave out cookies from a wicker basket. People asked her questions, ‘What is this? What is the chanting?’ She gave simple answers, ‘They are names of God.’ She handed out a few books. Her mother and father came to the plaza and did a little shopping. It was good that they saw how people did not mind the presence of the Hare Krishna movement and that the children of the devotees looked so normal and darling. The oxen showed that we are down to earth, like rural people, like Maria’s parents. When the cart was stopped and the kirtaneers were going around it in a dancing step, Maria’s parents came a little closer. Dhama dasa spoke with them. The sannyasi was introduced to them and he greeted them with his folded hands and a smile.

“Narahari had a good time, relieved to be back in his routine, non-political activities. He clapped and sang, grew red-faced in a good way (not in anger), and was photogenic as someone ‘into’ the joy of kirtana, arms upraised. He was glad to be out and with the party and in such a civilized place as old Verona.

“The fat, strong-man statue on the horse and other statues in the park did their frozen, dead thing. I know most people didn’t take the Hare Krishna chanting so seriously, but the devotees tried and made a good showing. Srila Prabhupada likes it when we do that, make the effort and get out and chant. Maybe someday the movement will really gain hold. We can only try.

“Dear readers, may you have a good Vaisnava year in vairagya-vidya nija-bhakti-yoga. May you live in the spirit of the harinama verse, there is no

other way. May we learn meekness and tolerance of trnad api sunicena. May Lord Caitanya and Lord Nityananda bless us in the core of our

hearts, driving out the darkness of cheating. May we get the mercy of Srila Prabhupada, which is Lord Gauranga’s prema, distributed so freely by Gaura-Nitai. May we join the harinama party again and again.”

ISKCON News.com: Krishna Symbolism in Crop Circles: Does it signify the coming of a ‘Chakravartin’?

By Bibhu Dev Misra on 18 Mar 2011

Crop circles are a modern enigma. These intricate and gigantic formations, appearing almost overnight, have confused and fascinated us for the past couple of decades. We do not know how these circles are being created or by whom. Interestingly, some of these circles depict various Vedic sacred symbols.

I agree that some temples are closing; and that some don’t seem to be attracting the national demographic of their particular country. But I know for a fact that growth is happening in other areas, and I would respectfully suggest to any ISKCON critic that he take certain factors into consideration.

Subhavilasa das ACBSP, Toronto, CA: Madhura: He is Supremely Sweet! Gauranga is coming! Gauranga! {Part 8 of 11}

Here is verse 15 & 16 from the Sri Gauranga Ashtottara Shata Nama Stotram composed by Sarvabhauma Bhattacharya.

Here are 13 more of the 108 different names of Sri Chaitanya Mahaprabhu describing His benevolent qualities along with another set of nectarean pictures. Gauranga! Gauranga!

There is only 1 more post after this one to complete the 108 names of Sri Chaitanya Mahaprabhu. Then the next post reveals the importance of this Strotram and finally tomorrow on Gaura Purnima day there will be the final nectar from this series of posts!

Yes, Gaura Purnima is almost here! Gauranga is coming!!!!!

In today's first verse (the 15th verse of the stotram) Sri Chaitanya Mahaprabhu is described as Madhura, He is supremely SWEET. But it was a debate as to which of name to use on the title. I love Guna-grahi, He accepts only the good qualities of others! Or what about Prana? Prana means He is the life and soul of all creation. And the most intimate, Priya-darshana, He is very precious to behold...wow!

But every name in this stotram is SWEET because Gauranga is SWEET. His names are SWEET. His pastimes are SWEET. His qualities are SWEET. His nectar is SWEET. He is SWEET "Complete" (to borrow from H.G. Dravida das' poem). So "Madhura" sums up this SWEETNESS in one word and Sri Chaitanya Mahaprabhu's sankirtan movement allows us to pass this SWEETNESS around. Srila Prabhupada wanted our dealings with each other, the congregation and the public to be SWEET so that we can reflect the qualities of our worshipable Lord in this way and people will become attracted to the Supreme Personality of Godhead's Madhura-lila!

Gauranga bol! Gauranga bol! Gauranga! Gauranga!

Subhavilasa das ACBSP, Toronto, CA: In the news: Holi is a messy, playful celebration of divine love

There's a divine message amid the messy, playful and intensely colorful Hindu spring festival of Holi. And it's the same theme that's lived out through much of the religion's worship and practice: the joy of divine love.

"It's an immortal, selfless love that's much more free-flowing on this day," when revelers live by the mantra Bura na mano, Holi Hai - "Don't mind, it's Holi!" — said Advaita Chandra Das, a director for the Hare Krishna Dham in Houston.

Without restrictions, Hindus will toss powders, squirt water and joke around, just as the divinities of Lord Krishna and his lover Radha gleefully exchange colors.

The festival has its origins in the story of Prahlad, whose devotion to Lord Vishnu allowed him to survive a burning pyre while his evil aunt Holika died. Holi takes its name from Holika and honors the triumph of love over evil.

For Hare Krishna devotees, Holi also falls on the day of Gaura Purima, the anniversary of the appearance of Lord Chaitanya, who's believed to be a contemporary incarnation of Krishna that lived 500 years ago as a social reformer in India. In honor of him, thousands will gather at the local temple for one of their biggest celebrations of the year.

"It's like a birthday, but it's called the 'appearance day' because we don't believe God is birthed. He just appears and reappears to us," Advaita Chandra Das said.

The Hare Krishna mantra of reciting the divine names of God dates to Chaitanya.

"He was able to teach by his own example on how to love God," he said. "Different people have different opinions on how to surrender to God … and he emphasized chanting, singing and dancing," which will be part of Saturday's festival celebration beginning.

Krishna Dharma dasa, UK: The desire tree of Lord Gauranga’s praises

(Gauranga stava kalpa vriksha)
By Raghunatha das Goswami

Seeing Gauranga’s graceful gait, one does all other grace decry
and gazing on his gorgeous face, does mock the full moon in the sky.
A great mountain of glowing gold, his speech is sweet felicity.
Awakening within my heart, that Lord completely maddens me.

Lovely with all signs of love, bedecked with gems of pure bhakti,
he trembles, weeps and laughs out loud, stuttering euphorically
Before the cart of Jagannnath, dancing majestically
May that Gauranga soon arise within my heart and madden me.

Reeling in rapturous delight, his streams of tears like showers of rain.
Biting his lovely lips in joy; dancing like a man insane.
Struck with deepest love divine, staggering in ecstasy.
May that golden Lord arise within my heart and madden me.

Tormented by the mournful mood of Radha’s parting from her Lord;
with body racked by anguished pangs, collapsing in Misra’s abode.
Tossed with grief upon the ground, groaning in great agony.
That sight of Gaura in my heart rises up and maddens me

How wondrous that impelled by love the Lord did pass three bolted gates
and cross beyond three steep high walls while wandering at night so late.
Until among the cows he fell, his limbs withdrawn invisibly.
Appearing thus within my heart, that Lord Gauranga maddens me.

Lost in longing for Vrindavan, his breath of life and very heart,
With words of wild delirium, mad mind by love all torn apart.
Chafing his face upon the walls, till blood flowed from his injuries.
That vision of Gauranga comes into my mind and maddens me

“O doorkeeper, my dearest friend, where now my Lord, my heart’s one hope?”
Seizing the temple servant’s hand in frenzied words of love he spoke.
Then dragging him that doorman said, “See your beloved, come quickly.”
That Lord Gauranga in my heart, rises up and maddens me

On seeing that great king of hills, named Chataka near Niladri,
He saw there holy Goverdhana, which drew his heart most ardently,
that in his madness thus he ran, chased by his friends full frantically.
May that Gauranga soon arise within my heart and madden me

When in a charming marquee sat Radha and Krishna on their swing
Gauranga watched with heart enthralled and in enchanting tones did sing,
with Svarupa and associates, those holy names of Lord Hari.
This scene arises in my heart and with divine love maddens me.

Narayana’s love for Garuda, is Gaura’s for Govinda.
Krishna’s love for his teacher, is Gaura’s for Ishvara.
As Gopala sees his friend Subal, so Gaura does Svarupa see.
May that Gauranga soon arise within my heart and madden me.

From a forest fire of affluence, this Ragunath so very low,
was saved by graceful Gauranga, who to Svarup’s care bade me go,
and gave me gifts so dear to him, though I am yet unworthy.
That Lord Chaitanya rises up within my heart and maddens me

This great wish granting tree of praise, bright branches of love’s poetry
its brilliant blossoms pure bhakti; when watered with steadfast study,
mixed with the herbs of firmest faith, bestows at once on one the sweet,
and heavy fruit of splendid sight of Lord Gauranga’s lotus feet.

Relief means spiritual instruction. Relief does not mean material comforts. Material comforts will end with the body, but spiritual instruction will not end; it will go on with the spirit soul.

The Different Ways

Ahmedabad, India

India must be employing millions of chaukidars (security guards). They are everywhere. Each morning I pass by at least a dozen along a dusty road near our temple. Each guard gestures a pranam (folded hands) and delivers a respectful, "Jai Sri Krishna" when seeing companion Abhay and I passing by on foot.

It's also common to see a uniformed person on duty at the gateway of his building with a small fire burning, an arrangement of leaves and twigs for keeping him warm over night. I'm sure the fire does more than that. It becomes like a friend who entertains as it crackles and dances.

Seeing these little fires is surely a habit of the past, a necessity, which hopefully will not die in the near future. Some of us wallow in reminiscence of the past.

For the Bhagavatam talk this morning Vasu Gosh, an American born godbrother, spoke about traditions. Having lived in India for over three decades he has got a good exposure to the ways of the people here. Somehow he trailed off from philosophy to the topic of ladoos and how in the state of Gujarat, ladoos are sweets made of wheat flour as opposed to the standard chic-pea flour base commonly known in India. He veered off into speaking about the politics if ancient India and how it is now.

There is not a day that goes by when you don't contemplate the past, present, and future. It was remarked by dear friend, Pragosh, at the Town Hall for our final performance of "The Three Lives of Bharat" that the senior men who run the technical operations are very unflexible and not so willing to comply with what we needed for our production. He said "In the west its younger people you deal with from the technical side of things."

I concurred. The teckies here were definitely of the old school. That is where I have to look with balance when it comes to "old and new." I struggled on psychological levels with the lighting man. I could have had more success working with the most stubborn ox.

In any event the program overall was a grand turn-out with another eight hundred people in attendance.

Despite Ill Health

Ahmedabad, India

I read, " Despite ill health, Prabhupada (our guru) took a walk. Surrounded by about twenty-five disciples, he walked slowly. Although he was a small figure surrounded by tall sanyassis (renunciants) , the Kumbha-mela pilgrims were able to easily recognize his preeminent position, and they would break through the ranks of devotees and offer dandavats (respects) before him. When Prabhupada saw people approaching, he would stop walking and let them touch his feet, despite the objections of his disciples. He was already sick, and he had explained in his books that a devotee can become ill if sinful people touch his feet. Still, he did not object.

"Srila Prabhupada was scheduled to stay at the Mela through January 21, but his disciples pressed him to go to a place more suitable for his health. Rarely had any of them seen him so sick, and they worried. "But my only ambition," said Prabhupada, "is that so many people can become enlightened."

There are interesting messages found in this passage to share with with you since there is mention of a divine monk walking.

Our troupe preformed well at the Town Hall due to great promotions- newspapers and TV9. Eight hundred people came to watch the life of Bharat dramatized.

krishna-shakti vina nahe taara pravartana
TRANSLATION
“The fundamental religious system in the Age of Kali is the chanting of the holy name of Krishna. Unless empowered by Krishna, one cannot propagate the sankirtana movement.
Antya Lila 7.11

Sri Caitanya Mahaprabhu set a practical example in that He did not establish any temples or Deities, but He profusely introduced the sankirtana movement. Therefore Krishna consciousness preachers should give more stress to the sankirtana movement, especially by distributing transcendental literature more and more. This helps the sankirtana movement.
