H.G. Sankarshan das Adhikari, USA: Wednesday 6 April 2011--Perfection by Hearing from the Proper Source--and--All You Need is Love

A daily broadcast of the Ultimate Self Realization Course(TM) Wednesday 6 April 2011 The Supreme Personality of Godhead, Lord Sri Krishna, and His eternal consort, Srimati Radharani are enjoying transcendental pastimes in the topmost planet of the spiritual world, Sri Goloka Vrindavan. They are beckoning us to rejoin them. (Click on photo to see a larger image.) Our Mission: To help everyone awaken their original Krishna consciousness, which is eternal, full of knowledge and full of bliss. Such a global awakening will, in one stroke, solve all the problems of the world society bringing in a new era of unprecedented peace and prosperity for all. May that day, which the world so desperately needs, come very soon. We request you to participate in this mission by reviving your dormant Krishna consciousness and assisting us in spreading this science all over the world. Dedicated with love to ISKCON Founder-Acharya: His Divine Grace A.C. Bhaktivedanta Swami Prabhupada, our beloved spiritual master, and to you, our dear readers. Today's Thought: Perfection by Hearing from the Proper Source Uploaded from Sri Vrindavan Dhama If you would like to attain spiritual perfection, you need to start off by learning how to hear transcendental knowledge submissively. In other words if you don't understand the Vedic wisdom, do not assume that it is wrong. Understand that your understanding is imperfect and incomplete and that you need to be enlightened by one who is already enlightened. From whom are we to hear? We must hear from the bona fide spiritual master. Others are not qualified to properly present the Vedic wisdom. Just because someone is a famous sannyasi or guru does not necessarily mean that he is a bona fide spiritual authority. In fact, most of the famous big name gurus nowadays are not actually bona fide. Before submitting ourselves for training we must see if the spiritual master is presenting the authorized message, which has been carefully handed down from the great mahajanas, the authorities of Vedic wisdom. For example, recently a well-known sannyasi-guru who has written what he calls The Encyclopedia of Authentic Hinduism was found guilty of 20 counts of indecency with a child. After being sentenced to 14 years in prison, instead of proclaiming his innocence and appealing the verdict, he went into hiding to avoid serving his sentence. It is not surprising that he has failed to get a higher taste from the process of bhakti, of which he professes to be an authority. A cursory examination of his writing reveals that he is presenting so many points which are not in accord with the Vedic conclusion. Even the very name of his encyclopedia reveals its inauthenticity. The term Hindu was coined by the Muslims. It does not exist anywhere in the Vedas. Therefore Hinduism is not an authentic term for describing the teachings of the Vedic scriptures. So we have to be very careful to hear from someone who is following and presenting the Vedic conclusion exactly as the great Vedic authorities have done. Then by such hearing we will become spiritually enlightened and attain the supreme perfection of pure Krishna bhakti. Sankarshan Das Adhikari Vishnupriya Mataji Tells How Syamakunda Appeared http://www.backtohome.com/images/2011-Spring/VP_at_Syama_Kunda.JPG Hearing the Glories of Syamakunda http://www.backtohome.com/images/2011-Spring/hearing.JPG Syamakunda, Krishna's Personal Bathing Ghat http://www.backtohome.com/images/2011-Spring/Syama-Kunda.jpg Answers According to the Vedic Version: Question: All You Need is Love Dear Guru Maharaja, Please accept my humble obeisances. All glories to Srila Prabhupada. I have heard this advice that instead of loving another person on earth, like husband, mother, friend, etc, we should address our loving feelings to Krishna. But how? How to love someone, that we cannot see? And why should the love we feel towards other person be taken as a false feeling? Why, if we all are spirit souls, and can love each others' spiritual forms, why gay-love is so forbidden in most of the religions? Maybe the same souls were a married couple in previous life. I ask this question, because someone might ask it from me. Most of the people are not that spiritual, that they could just love God, and never miss being close to another person. I understand, dear and most respected Gurudeva, that you particularly are on a high level of spirituality, but I think that most of the people cannot be fully satisfied from the love of God. Please clarify my understanding. Your eternal servant, S.S. Answer: The Perfection of Love Even in this world someone may love someone they don't see. For example, a young girl may fall in love with a movie star that she has never physically seen. She has only seen him in movies. She may collect pictures of him to adorn her room, read articles about him in movie star magazines, and write him love letters as fan mail. Even though she has never actually seen him, she is madly in love with him. So if such a thing is possible in material life, how much more possible it is in spiritual life? Rukmini devi, the first wife of Krishna had never seen Krishna. But just by hearing about Him she fell madly in love with Him and sent a Him letter offering herself as His bride. Krishna reciprocated with her love and rescued her from being married to the rascal Sisupala. So one can hear about Krishna, see pictures of Krishna, take the prasadam of Krishna, meet the devotees of Krishna, hear the kirtan offered to Krishna, visit the places of Krishna's pastimes--and in this way become completely in love with Krishna 24 hours daily. This is called Krishna consciousness. The love in this material world is real. But because it is covered love, sometimes we say that it is false. It is covered because instead of loving the eternal spiritual being who resides within the body, we become attracted to the external covering. It is something like loving someone for the clothes they wear instead of for the person that they are. If a boy is simply attracted to a girl's body, he will utilize her for his personal sense gratification. But if he is instead attracted to her spiritual identity, he will serve her by helping her to awaken her dormant Krishna consciousness. This principle is the basis of Krishna conscious married life. We devotees are certainly meant to have loving feelings for each other. This is why Srila Rupa Goswami has described the six types of love exchanged between devotees in his classic text, the Nectar of Instruction. For example, the spiritual master loves his disciples just like a father loves his sons and daughters. And the disciples love their spiritual master as their spiritual father. Similarly, between fellow devotees also, godbrothers and godsisters, there are the six types of loving exchanges. Since the human life is meant for achieving spiritual emancipation, we are meant to transcend carnal attraction (lust) and come the platform of pure spiritual love. This is why we have prohibitions against illicit heterosex, homosex, and monosex (masturbation). In other words, because these three types of sex bring us off the spiritual platform down to the bodily plane, they are meant to be avoided. We instead encourage everyone to dive deeply into the sweet nectarean ocean of loving relationships with devotees because this will bring us quickly to the platform of transcendental happiness. Krishna confirms the importance of this in the Adi Purana wherein he states that unless we love His devotees we don't really love Him. Because in the beginning it is difficult for us to love a God whom we cannot yet see, the Lord kindly manifests Himself in the form of the spiritual master and the devotees so we can learn how to love Him through loving the spiritual master and the devotees. He is also present for us visibly in the form the deity and audibly in the form of the kirtan so we feel our connection with Him immediately. Vraja Kishor, JP: Who is Goddess Radha?

“God is energy.”

OK, yes. But God is also the source of energy! “God” is both the energy of existence and the source of that energy.

“God is one.”

Yes, but in perfect unity there is diversity. Within the oneness of God there are two distinct natures: (1) The possessor and originator of energy, and (2) The energy itself.

The first aspect of God – the possessor of energy – has unlimited nature, but also has an original state. The original, most complete state is denoted by the name “Kṛṣṇa” – because this name indicates the origin point who possesses all energies.

The second aspect of God – the energy – also has unlimited nature, and also has an original pristine state. The original state is the Goddess “Rādhā.” This name itself indicates that she is the energy which functions on Kṛṣṇa’s behalf.

To summarize what we have said so far: “God” is a single entity with two natures, the potency – Rādhā, and the potent – Kṛṣṇa. God is neither Kṛṣṇa nor Rādhā, but is both: Rādhā-Kṛṣṇa.

How does divine energy (Rādhā) function?

God’s energy (“shakti”) is one, but again in perfect unity there is diversity. Rādhā, the energy of God, is one unified being but functions in a plurality of ways. Those who are intimately conversant with God’s energy explain this plurality as an expansion of triplicates.

The first triplicate is Her division into:

1.       “Internal Energy” (antar-anga shakti)

2.       “External Energy” (bahir-anga shakti)

3.       “Borderline Energy” (tathastha shakti)

The Internal Shakti of Rādhā is the main branch of divine energy. This shakti creates the main part of existence – the blissful, eternal, exciting world of the “internal affairs” in the “spiritual world” of the divine. The External Shakti is a mirror image of the Internal Energy. Mirrors replicate the external image but lack substance and depth. This energy manifests the “material world.” The Borderline Shakti is an atomic fragment of the internal energy. Being on the border between the two other energies, it can place itself into contact with either. This energy creates the “soul” – all the living beings in this world.

Each one of these triplicate divisions of divine energy itself also has a triplicate subdivision.

1.       The experiential energy

2.       The “verb” energy

3.       The “noun” energy

The Internal Energy

Let’s first consider how this triplicate subdivision operates in the first triplicate division – the Internal Shakti, the spiritual world.

1.       Bliss (hlādinī śakti)

2.       Relationships (samvit śakti)

3.       Beings (sandhinī śakti)

As we previously noted, the main portion of divine energy goes into the Internal Shakti which creates the intimate spiritual reality of the divine. Within that, the main subportion goes into the shakti that creates the experience of bliss. Being that the bliss of the internal energy is therefore the most major portion of divine energy, Śrīmatī Rādhā takes personal charge of this shakti. In truth, She is the origin and substance of every manifestation of divine energy – but she particularly and personally takes charge of this portion of divine energy. To operate in her other roles, she expands into other Goddesses.

The energy of being (sandinī) manifests all the “nouns” of the internal spiritual world – all the persons, places and things. The energy of relationships (samvit) manifests all the “verbs” of the internal spiritual world – all the interactions and relationships between the nouns. The energy of bliss (hlādinī) manifests the result of the spiritual nouns interaction via spiritual verbs: the bliss of divine love.

The Borderline Energy

In the borderline energy, which is all of us – our “souls” – the triplicate subdivision is:

1.       Spiritual bliss (ānanda)

2.       Spiritual awareness (cit)

3.       Spiritual existence (sat)

Our essential being, or “soul,” eternally exists as a noun – this is the function of the sat shakti. We also have the inherent capacity to be fully aware of our essential eternal being and to function in that eternal role. This is the “verb” of our being, and it is the function of the cit shakti. When our essential being operates in its eternal function, we realize our inherent potential to experience infinite spiritual bliss. That is the function of the ānanda shakti.

The External Energy

The external energy creates the mirror image of the spiritual reality. It’s triplicate subdivision is:

1.       Temporary pleasures (nirānanda)

2.       Knowledge of the temporary self and world (acit)

3.       Temporary material persons and objects (asat)

If the borderline energy of the soul chooses to contact the external energy it develops a temporary reflection of itself, this is the ego, mind, and body that we currently inhabit and is created by the asat shakti. We act to understand and express that temporary self in relation to the other temporary persons and objects in its temporary world. This verb is the function of the acit shakti. The result of our temporary being interacting with temporary sensory objects is that we experience temporary pleasures. These manifest from the nirananda shakti.

Who is Śrī Rādhā

Śrī Rādhā is, along with Śrī Kṛṣṇa, Godhead. Śrī Kṛṣṇa is the potent, and Śrī Rādhā is the potency. Everything that exists is Śrī Rādhā, the source of everything that exists is Śrī Kṛṣṇa.

Existence has three features, and each feature has three subfeatures. We have made an endeavor to understand and express those here. Doubtlessly this is not the reality itself, but an attempt to describe the reality in words via limited capacity to understand and express. Since this follows the manner in which the self-realized souls since time immemorial have expressed and explained the subject, I am very confident in its value and profundity.

Kripamoya dasa, UK: Understanding (not burning) Holy Books

This year is the 400th anniversary of the publishing of the King James version of the Holy Bible. Its a great work of the English language and remains loved after four long centuries. Together with the works of William Shakespeare, it has contributed many words and expressions to the English language that we still use today.

Someone sent me recently the newest edition of the New Testament. It is a new translation, written in contemporary English and avoiding any ambivalent or difficult expressions of previous versions. It reads well, but somehow missed out on the feeling of the King James.

I suppose we all have a favourite divine scripture, from whatever cultural and religious background we come. The words are reassuring and contain wisdom in a form that our great-great-grandparents would have listened to and appreciated. And their great grandparents too.

However, we live in changing times, times that do not seem to be treating religious scripture that well. Whether it is fundamentalists of any persuasion burning holy books, or the ‘New Atheists’ rubbishing them verbally or in print, nothing is sacred. Including, it appears, sacred literature.

It began a long time ago. In the 1860s there began a wave of textual criticism of the Bible, with scholars examining the Bible as a historical document and contesting the accounts found there. Beginning in Germany, it swept through Europe and continues to the present day. What was previously unthinkable – criticism of the beliefs and symbols held sacred to people – is now commonplace.

Textual scholars are scientists of the historicity of the accounts found in the holy books of mankind. Their number includes linguistic palaeontologists, experts on the archaeology of ancient language and how language changes over the years and across geographical regions. Then there are scholars of religious traditions and the shades of difference between one sect and another – and which kings and social movements helped to make them that way.

Our respect for scientists – both the physical and literary types – places them at the top of the intellectual tree. We can choose to believe what we believe in our holy books, but the scientists will tell us whether or not what we believe is valid or not.

A reader brought a current television series to my attention. A young archaeologist was bringing her science to bear on many of the hallowed stories and traditions in the Holy Bible. From the Vaishnava perspective it was interesting, since we also have opinions on the thinking processes of the ancient mind. But the Bible was held up only to the light of science, and only that which is provable historically could be accepted as truth. And for ‘provable’ that means bones, pottery shards, and the names of kings.

I wondered how those who have newly discovered Vaishnavism would cope with such textual and historical analysis applied to our own tradition. Strangely enough, I did not  have long to wait. Another reader sent me a link to a BBC Radio 4 discussion chaired by Lord Melvyn Bragg. Subject of the discussion was The Bhagavad-gita. Readers can listen to it until next Thursday on the BBC website.

The scholars discussing the Bhagavad-gita are known to the Vaishnava community and, as scholars, their views are based on verifiable historical or linguistic evidence researched by themselves or other respected scholars.

However, it should be said that access to the inner spirit of the Bhagavad-gita is exclusively open to the scholar-practitioner. Access that is not readily available to those who study it only as a poetic historical document. The teachings of the Gita factually result in spiritual experiences that foster wisdom in contrast to knowledge. Not that scholars do not speak truth as they have discovered it, but that there is a higher order of truth available to those who taste what is described therein. Like accurately describing honey and then tasting it, there is a difference between the experiences of the observers.

Kurma dasa, AU: Fudging it - True Confessions

burfi:

We all have a few regrets in life. Allow me to share with you a nagging one that won't go away.

It concerns a printing error in my second cookbook Cooking with Kurma. During pre-production, Philip Little, our art designer, inadvertently sliced off a major ingredient as he re-arranged text while putting the finishing touches to a photo insert.

I had already done my last page check, and the book went to print suggesting that our Almond Toffee Fudge be set by adding, and I quote "1/2 cups powdered milk". The actual amount was 3 1/2 cups, but Philip had lost the 3 as he moved text to fit over the space we had left on the photograph.

The mistake was especially regretful since I had given the recipe such an enthusiastic promotion.

Subsequent reprints of the book have been unable to tackle the delicate fix. So the error has remained to this day. Dozens of perplexed readers have written to me over the years wondering why the fudge never set. I was happy to explain the error. But to all those frustrated readers who never did write, I dedicate this blog.

ALMOND TOFFEE FUDGE

I can honestly say that I've cooked more fudge than any other one preparation in my quarter-century kitchen career. Different versions of the same basic recipe, often prepared in 2,000-5,000 piece batches, have been devoured with delight at innumerable expos, food fairs, alternative life-style events and catering programs. I've supplied the recipe hundreds of times to "fudgeaholics".

Here's the original almond variety, immortalised in print. You should know that the best-tasting fudge requires top quality unsalted butter, premium quality cream and, most important, full-fat powdered milk.

PREPARATION AND COOKING TIME: about 30 minutes, YIELD: about 50 pieces of fudge.

250g good quality unsalted butter (I prefer Danish style), 1 1/2 cups raw sugar, 1 cup pouring consistency pure cream, 1 cup whole unblanched almonds, oven-roasted or fried, and very coarsely chopped, about 3 1/2 cups full cream powdered milk, extra toasted, crushed, slivered, flaked or whole almonds for decorating the surface of the fudge (optional).

Gently melt the butter in a heavy 5-litre/quart saucepan over low heat. Add the sugar, increase the heat to moderate and, stirring constantly, cook for about 3 minutes or until the sugar melts into the butter and becomes frothy.

Cook for a few minutes more until it develops a light caramel colour. The caramelised sugar will give off a light toffee fragrance. Be careful to avoid over-darkening the sugar at this point; excess caramelisation will give the fudge a bitter flavour. The butter will probably be completely separated from the caramelised sugar at this stage, but that's normal.

Remove the pan from the heat and allow it to cool for 2 or 3 minutes. Stir in the cream and nuts. Using a wire whisk, gradually mix in the powdered milk a little at a time, whisking vigorously to avoid forming any lumps. When the mixture just hangs onto the whisk, it is ready. If it reaches this stage before you've added all the powdered milk, don't add any more. If it's still too runny after adding it all, add a little more.

Very lightly butter a 25cm-30cm (10-inch - 12-inch) tray. With a spatula, scrape the hot fudge mixture into the tray. Smooth it out and sprinkle the top with the optional nuts. Allow the fudge to set in a cool place for 1 hour. Cut into approximately 3.75cm(1-inch) squares, and stand back.

Bharatavarsa.net: Bhakti Vikasa Swami: Srila Prabhupada's jewels

In 1976, Srila Prabhupada visited New Vrindavan. They were building a house for Srila Prabhupada, and they were going to call it Prabhupada's Palace. At that time it was a very crude construction site, just cement and steel, and they gave Srila Prabhupada a tour of it. One of Srila Prabhupada's very senior disciples, he said, "Srila Prabhupada, this is going to be your palace. Will it be like the palaces in the heavenly planets or in Vaikuntha where there's no need for the sun or the moon or electric lights, but everything will be lit by precious jewels?" And Srila Prabhupada replied, "My devotees are my precious jewels, and they will illuminate the entire world."

Devadeva Mirel, Alachua, USA: The Undecorate Movement : Yay or Nay?

Saturday the NYTimes published a piece called Design Well Within Reach. The title, which rifts on the ironically named store Design Within Reach, caught my attention.

coffee shop in L.A...too much of a good theme?

The article looks at the “Undecorate Movement” first documented last month by Christiane Lemieux, creative director @ DwellStudio, in her book Undecorate. And, although I would love to get my hands on a copy of the book, have some mixed feelings about the whole thing. Let’s review.

  • Positive: The Undecorate Movement is proletarian, making the layman the authority. Rules are thrown out the window and an anything goes aesthetic makes us all feel good about our choices and we can finally fly our freak flag.
  • Negative: Wallpaper molding sounds like a very bad idea to me. Very, very bad. I don’t even understand this concept. Is each piece of molding individually wallpapered and then mounted? I am assuming not. Honestly, this sounds like an act of abuse against architectural details. Please don’t do this…even in the privacy of your own home.
  • Positive: I love that undecorating allows the undecorator to be the storyteller of their own life through chosen objects. I love that a room is always evolving, that collections can expand or be switched out. That there is personality given to a room.
  • Negative: I dislike the extreme towards kitsch. What is often showcased–as is in the Times piece–are rooms filled with vintage and repurposed materials that end up looking like a gas station theme restaurant. Or maybe, more accurately, a hipster themed restaurant.
  • Positive: The look is often young and playful. Or bright and dramatic. I like that it is a backlash against design neutrals such as over-stuffed white pillowy couches, something that I feel you should only own if your first name is Barbara and your last name is Steisand.
  • Negative: In addition to being called the Undecorate Movement,  in some applications it may  appropriately be dubbed the Ikea Hack Movement. While there is not anything intrinsically wrong with that, I prefer working with materials that have longevity and will not end up in the dump, at least in my lifetime.
  • Positive: Undecorators often create spaces that actually look like someone lives there, with beautiful objects that say look *and* touch.
  • Negative: All those authentically worn and antiqued surfaces, collections that need dusting, and general excess seem really impractical to me if you are the one doing the housekeeping.

I think anyone who grew up a fan of Pretty in Pink has a bit of undesign in them. Still, do we really want to make Andy’s bedroom our own? Or dress like Ducky? Or make our own prom dress out of curtains that’s really very hideous but  for some reason people say looks amazing? That is a deeply personal question, I know. Surely I am more undecorate than not. Maybe if I was more of a DIY-er I would be more of an undecorator. Remember the 90′s where they encouraged you to be weird? Yeah, well that was the 90′s. I guess my hesitation about the Undecorate Movement is I don’t want to

put a bird on something and call it art. I strive for something a bit more adult. You know, I’m no longer in the 30-35 year old category. But not adult like my parents either– I’m not in the over 70 category.

So…where do you stand? On a burlap covered stool? Or at the checkout line at Anthropologie?

Hare krsna.
Yes this is actually the way we can resolve all our problems, through Cow protection and depending on the Cows and Bulls and Land.
So many of our problems come from modern day life and the promise of the better life .We put so much mis-placed faith ,hope and happiness into technology, supermarkets and especially Capitalism. We think we will all be satisfied and better off if we adopt and adapt to Western life of Consumerism but it is all a facade an illusion.
As devotees in iskcon basing our lives on Cows and Land is the only way forward,we must cultivate the mode of goodness in our lives through our food, our business, our housing and heat requirements and our energy. The mode of goodness brings happiness that is sustainable, every day the mode of goodness builds up our happiness, integrity, self confidence, health, wisdom and wealth.
Krsna gave us the example Himself,Srila Prabhupada explains this clearly throughout the Srimad Bhagavatam and HH Sivarama Maharaja is again re-stating this fact. How much do we need convincing on this matter? Our lifestyle ,our way of life as devotees is to protect Cows and cultivate Brahmanical culture, the mode of goodness. This is what Iskcon needs to establish on behalf of our Founder Acharya Srila Prabhupada, dont we owe it to Him for saving us from the mode of passion and ignorance and giving us Krsna Consciousness. We are many,so its in our hands to act in this way. Each one of us can do our part by following this culture.
What more inspiration do we need than seeing the Cows go out into their pastures and bliss out, kick their feet and jump around. We can just imagine the feeling they have and how Krsna Himself loves His cows and holds onto the tails and gets pulled through the dirt and cow manure and laughs His head off.
Cows are cool, mobile phones are not cool.Cows create Community for devotees ,mobile phones just cost money and pollute the airwaves. My faith is in Cows.

Hare Krsna.
Remembering from Bhaktivedanta Manor days when i was serving there with the Cows and Gardens we did not practise the animal husbandry principle of locking the Cows inside so that they could not come out at all.
The Cows seemed to enjoy the colder weather than the hotter weather and there were many times that the Cows would come outside and lay down in the snow.

I understand that the idea of locking the Cows inside is to keep them warm and help the milk production maintain an even keel but we never experienced any problem with milk production in the Winter months with the Cows outside. As long as they had access to shelter from heavy rain and winds they did appear to enjoy the colder weather and the snow. But the practise seems to originate from commercially managed herds for convienence and higher milk production so i am not too sure if we need to practise this just for the sake of it.Maybe we should give the Cows and Bulls the choice of what they would like to do and take note of their activities??

16 Rounds to Samadhi Magazine, LA, USA: Hear about Krishna, The Supreme Personality of Godhead

Everyone is addicted to hearing of the activities of another person, whether a politician or a rich man or an imaginary character whose activities are created in a novel. There are so many nonsensical literatures, stories and books of speculative philosophy.

Materialistic persons are very interested in reading such literature, but when they are presented with genuine books of knowledge like Śrīmad-Bhāgavatam, Bhagavad-gītā, Viṣṇu Purāṇa or other scriptures of the world, such as the Bible and Koran, they are not interested.

These persons are condemned by the supreme order as much as a hog is condemned. The hog is interested in eating stool. If the hog is offered some nice preparation made of condensed milk or ghee, he won’t like it; he would prefer obnoxious, bad-smelling stool, which he finds very relishable.

Materialistic persons are considered condemned because they are interested in hellish activities and not in transcendental activities. The message of the Lord’s activities is nectar, and besides that message, any information in which we may be interested is actually hellish.

H.H. Satsvarupa das Goswami (Ret.): 271—Poem for April 5

www.sdgonline.org. SDGonline Daily updates

5:18 A.M.
A Writer of Pieces

New format—I will begin with a poem written on the day of its printing. Then I will print random excerpts of books I have printed over the last 30 years. I hope this variety will be pleasing.

Poem for April 5

Sankirtana is measured and
japa in a regulated rapid
way. She said she is taking siksa
from two swamis, but one passed
away. She likes the japa retreats
and took a sankalpa (vow) in a
letter to Nama Prabhu thanking him
for coming and pledging seventeen plus rounds
a day to offset her unsteadiness due
to working long hours in a prasadam business.

I encouraged her in taking siksa from
various persons who inspire her and
mentioned I have a book
Japa Transformations
which she might like to look at.

I can’t be there to help her
intimately and closely with seminars
but hope those books like
108 Japa Poems might help.

They do tell of the expression in
rounded flowing poem ways,
how chanting become successful
yet is a struggle.

It is a victory inventory
of the daily attempt
in swinging jazz.
It runs smoothly down
the arm and mind
the Hare Krishna mantras,
I encouraged her noble
attempt at seventeen plus.
She is a serious person
writing to Nama Prabhu
her intentions to improve
and become a solid chanter
in regular life with
all the others chores she has to do.

I wish I could do the same
to inspire her, writing in a
poem confirming and recording
my own practice as faithful
and the best I could do,
sixteen rounds early in the morning
done all at once in a
solid block not failing to
hear and count with attention.

It is done amalgamated
in your own sankalpa (promise)
to be steady always in the
divine practice of nama-yajna.
She and I will correspond and I
will offer her tips.

H.H. Satsvarupa das Goswami (Ret.): OLD FRIENDS

www.sdgonline.org. SDGonline Daily updates

The Daily News: All Things Fail Without Krishna

Origins

In 1976, my spiritual master, His Divine Grace A. C. Bhaktivedanta Swami Prabhupada, asked me to write a book. He called me into his room in the Detroit temple and said, “I want you to write another book. It should be about how all things fail without Krishna.” Prabhupada gave a few examples of what he meant, how worldly schemes collapse due to lack of Krishna consciousness.

Prabhupada said that it’s a devotees duty to point out the real purpose of life, but most people aren’t interested. People are more interested in economics than in religion. Everything they attempt fails because they don’t serve Krishna.

I have written many books since that meeting with Srila Prabhupada, but I have never been able to write “All Things Fail Without Krishna.” It’s not that I didn’t try to write it. At first I thought I had to become expert in economics and politics, but that seemed impossible. Then I wrote a letter to Prabhupada presenting my groping ideas on how to expose certain Indian politicians.

Prabhupada replied,” You should go forward positively instead of attacking others. Prabhupada said that I should not create enemies. Otherwise, I would have to fight them one after another. Nor did he want me to waste my time trying to understand their philosophies. “Let others present the philosophy of R. and G. and then you smash it. You crush it by kicking. Otherwise, your hand will get a bad smell.” Prabhupada was referring to a Bengali proverb, “If you kill a skunk, your hand gets a bad smell.”

Soon I made another stab at writing the book by turning it into a treatise on varnasrama-dharma. But that didn’t work either and soon other Godbrothers wrote manuscripts on that subject. Mine didn’t seem necessary.

Here I am again. I’ll make it this time. This time I plan to take on the newspapers. Although Prabhupada told me not to punch any skunks, he also told me to “expose the rascals.” By his grace, I hope to speak honestly, without departing from parampara and without indulging in sensational name-calling.

As kids we used to end an argument by shouting, “It’s a free country!” Well it’s a free country. I have a right to speak the Absolute Truth.

Since I will be repeating Srila Prabhupada’s teachings, I pray for his blessings in this endeavor. I offer him my most sincere and humble obeisances. He has dissipated the darkness of nescience by opening my eyes with transcendental knowledge. He is my all-merciful spiritual master and the savior of the fallen.

Satsvarupa Dasa Goswami
Saranagati Farm, Feb. 1994

What This Book Is Not

I am not writing to convince the hard-headed material “experts.” I’m writing for those inclined toward devotional service. Do devotees need to be told that the world cannot solve its problems without Krishna? Yes.

A neophyte devotee’s tendency is to pretend the material world doesn’t exist. The world becomes abstract and hostile. But it does exist with its poverty, war and crime. The material world and its miseries are temporary, but they are real. Although devotees are transcendental to much of the world’s suffering, we live as a tiny group among billions of suffering souls. These people take their sufferings, and their attempts to gain relief from suffering, very seriously.

There are many people who are unable to accept what the leaders and the newspapers tell them to do to improve their lives. For those people, a Krishna conscious alternative will be helpful.

Here is a letter from a devotee businessman:

Dear SDG:

I heard you were starting a newspaper to deal with worldly topics from the spiritual point of view. Personally I have never been much into TV or newspapers. I never really cared about the news. In my mind it’s always the same. Only the names change.

But I’m out in the world, and sometimes I feel embarrassed that I’m not up on current events. I would like to hear what the sages have to say about the themes that are touched on by the news reporters. After all, we are in this particular world at this particular time—stuck here along with everyone else. I guess we should be able to talk about it with someone who might actually be trying to figure out what is going on and what lessons we are supposed to learn from it.

What is going on? It’s a mess out here! I can’t figure it out. Got any answers? I’m so entangled in the world myself that it’s a little hard to step back and get an overview.

Do I have any answers? I have to admit that I can’t specifically apply the Vedic teachings to the myriad of problems. The whole society would have to be changed first. I cannot apply the Krishna conscious conclusions to a corrupt government. For example, Vedic society favors monarchy, but we can’t say that the world needs a dictator. Where is that king who could rule like Maharaja Pariksit? Then is democracy better, considering the lack of a qualified ruler? Srila Prabhupada also condemned democracy when he called it “Demon-crazy”. He said that if the people are controlled by the lower modes of nature, they will only elect a fool who promises to cater to their lust. Where can I start to apply the Vedic conclusions?

The Camloops Daily News tells us that the Canadian government is lowering the price of cigarettes to stop people smuggling untaxed cigarettes into the country. How would a Krishna conscious devotee side on that issue, would we keep the taxes or remove them? Would we ban smoking? Would we ban slaughterhouses and liquor shops? But what about the fact that all the citizens are brainwashed into thinking that cigarettes and alcohol are necessary for their happiness.

Krishna conscious brahmanas traditionally stayed out of politics and administration. The ksatriyas carried out the administration based on the brahmanas spiritual advise. Where are those brahmanas, and where are those ksatriyas to heed them?

Therefore I can only write this book under certain conditions. One condition is that I not be expected to apply Vedic ideals to relative world problems. I can’t decide whether or not to tax cigarettes in Canada or whether NATO should bomb Bosnia. All I can expect to do is to expose the wrong thinking that has led us into the present mess. And I can show that the solutions being proposed today will not be effective and why.

This book is a response to news reports gathered in February 1994. Since that time, the world has moved on and these reports are outdated. For example, at the time of this writing, Jackie Onassis was battling cancer. Now she is dead. That is another proof of the temporary nature of events in the material world and how our real shelter is Krishna, not the attempts to stave off material calamity.

Jackie Has Cancer

Jaqueline Onassis is 64 years old, and she is being treated for cancer. The newspaper published a photo of Jackie walking to the park. She was wearing a long coat, boots, a stylish scarf over her head and her usual dark glasses. Her spokesperson said “The prognosis is excellent,” but a doctor said it’s a “Fast-moving cancer.”

When I was in the navy Jackie was the president’s wife. I remember writing an article in the Sara News about Jackie Kennedy visiting Buddhist shrines in the east. I made a wry comment at the time, something like “Who knows what the consequences will be?” In other words, who cares if the president’s wife visits a Buddhist shrine. It’s a non-story, but it was published because she was young and famous and glamorous.

When John F. Kennedy was shot, Srila Prabhupada held it up as evidence that even the most influential man can die in a moment. Jackie Kennedy mourned her husband, and the nation mourned with her. Then Robert Kennedy was assassinated. The day after Robert Kennedy’s assassination, my supervisor in the welfare office said with real sadness, “What’s this country coming to?” Then he asked me, “What does your Krishna philosophy say about this?” I told him that Robert Kennedy’s assassination proved that no matter how powerful we may be in this world death may come at any moment. We should prepare ourselves for death. My supervisor stopped for a moment in his indignation to think about that.

Now Jackie Onassis, the widow of the richest and most powerful man in the world is 64. “She has been very upset. There have been occasions where her face appeared swollen.” Ted Kennedy apparently knows about Jackie’s cancer. The news reported that two weeks ago she was supposed to be at a fund-raiser for him in New York but “she stayed home, with the flue.” Disease and death are painful no matter who we are, and here I am, still wry about famous people. The news report tells us that Jackie “guards her personal life zealously.” She went public with this story only because there had been speculations and rumors about her health. Apparent “good” karma is more or less the same as “bad” karma when you discuss birth, death, disease and old age. Even if you have excellent material karma—beauty, education, wealth and aristocracy—birth, death, disease and old age are as much full of suffering as if you are ugly or uneducated or poor. It’s important to understand that. We all have to prepare for death, no matter who we are in life.

Those who are famous, society’s leaders, should do something about the suffering in the world. They should first educate themselves about the facts of life, and they should give up sense gratification before death. They should lead society on that course. Whatever a great man does, others will follow.

Subhavilasa das ACBSP, Toronto, CA: In the News: "... That's my reward - to make available the process of kirtan..."

Picture
We were forwarded an email with some commentary and questioning by a devotee about Holi celebrations...

It is a positive trend that Holi is only celebrated the day or week after Gaur Purnima so the celebration of the appreance day of Sri Chaitanya Mahaprabhu remains the focus. It is also nice to see that the Holi celebrations (throwing of colours) are not done inside the temple as per injuctions. So sometimes it is nice to have a positive outlook on things and commend devotees that are working hard to continue to maintain and spread Srila Prabhupada's movement.

The Festival of "India" which in reality is attracting people to Lord Jagannath or "Woodstock" with non-stop kirtan are innovative ways to push out harinam sankirtan.

All of us are familiar with the Mantra Rock Dance attended by Srila Prabhupada himself with many hippies and rogues in the audience. But this was innovative preaching organized to push Krishna Consciousness.

Caru Prabhu and the Utah devotees should be commended for their efforts. The spirit of spreading the holy name can be seen in the below article an excerpt of which is a title to this article... "... That’s my reward – to make available the process of kirtan..."

In distributing love of Godhead, Caitanya Mahaprabhu and His associates did not consider who was a fit candidate and who was not, nor where such distribution should or should not take place. They made no conditions. Wherever they got the opportunity, the members of the Pañca-tattva distributed love of Godhead. The flood of love of Godhead swelled in all directions, and thus young men, old men, women and children were all immersed in that inundation. The Krishna consciousness movement will inundate the entire world and drown everyone, whether one be a gentleman, a rogue or even lame, invalid or blind. CC Adi 7.23-26

This page doesn’t have color, but holi does
by Asia Bates

In a crowd of thousands of people, there is an explosion of color as blue, pink, yellow, orange and green powdered chalk are thrown into the air, creating an all-encompassing purplish-brown cloud. Inside the cloud you are lost, all sound and friends around you are absorbed into the thick chalky air. All that can be seen is nebulous purple.

The festival quickly turns from carefree and merry to a fight for survival. Breathing is difficult; inhaling the chalk makes the corners of your mouth gritty. Your eyes water tears of blue and pink, and within about 20 seconds the cloud disperses. The sound is back: screaming, cheering, laughing, coughing. The people around you are back, and they are so rainbow-caked in chalk that all that can be distinguished are their eyes. But finding your friends isn’t hard because after a shared experience like that, all the attendees are your friends.

The Holi Festival of Colors at the Sri Sri Radha Krishna Temple in Spanish Fork is held annually at the end of March to celebrate the passing of winter’s neutral palette and to embrace the colors of spring.

The festival also celebrates the burning of the evil witch Holika. She was the sister of Hiranya Kashipu, a demon king who defeated the Gods to make himself invincible. His son Prahlad stayed loyal to Lord Vishnu and refused to worship his father. The angry king enlisted the help of his sister, who was immune to fire, to kill Prahlad. She held Prahlad in the fire but, because of his devotion to Vishnu, Prahlad was saved and Holika was burned.

To commemorate this story, there was a ceremonial burning of the witch before the colors were thrown. A paper mache effigy of Holika, complete with bright green skin, fangs and wild black hair, burned in a large bonfire. As she was being set up to be burned, the audience eerily chanted, “Burn the witch! Burn the witch!” After the evil witch was burned, the crowd transformed from a mob to a party as the countdown to the throwing of the colors began.

All kinds of people attend the festival, mixing and blending together until eventually everyone at the festival is just one big dancing, chanting, purple cloud.

“It’s about unity and everything, man. Celebrating life and the colors of life,” said Riley Bigelow, who has attended the festival in both New York City and Utah. The unique colors of life are definitely represented at the Holi Festival: people wearing masks, robes, gas masks and ski goggles, a Star Wars stormtrooper crowd surfer, people completely covered head to toe in white and those wearing only underwear.

Dressed in robes of all white, Caru Das Adikari made no attempt to keep clean. His passion and excitement for the event was evident as he paused, took a look at the colors in the crowd dancing and chanting and beamed. Das Adikari has been the priest at the Hare Krishna Lotus temple since 1982 and essentially started the festival in Utah.

“Sometimes our career or our studies are more important to us,” Das Adikari said. “Or our perversions or our bad habits may be more important, and we kind of skimp on relationships. So this festival is about nothing other than enhancing your relationship with God and enhancing your relationship with other human beings.”

An important but underlying part of the festival is the kirtan chanting. Kirtan bands will play the chant that is used to become closer to God and one’s fellow man. The bands played the chant over and over until the crowd automatically started chanting along:
Hare Krishna Hare Krishna
Krishna Krishna Hare Hare
Hare Rama Hare Rama
Rama Rama Hare Hare

Das Adikari reiterated the sheer importance of this chanting as he spoke of a past Holi disappointment:

“As the organizer and manager of the festival, after it was over, I got in my car at about 11 o’clock at night and I drove aimlessly here or there crying,” Das Adikari said. “Actually, tears were coming down my face. I was just so disappointed that the chanting, the chanting had not gone off as I had wanted it to do. That’s my pay. That’s my reiteration. That’s my reward – to make available the process of kirtan and, again, it’s up to you whether you want to use it for your benefit.”

To Das Adikari, the opportunity to introduce so many people to this process is worth all the trouble of letting over 40,000 people, mostly college kids, run rampant all over the temple grounds. For the most part, this crowd seemed more respectful than last year’s crowd. There were still incidences of people not taking off their shoes when entering the temple, mocking the temple’s practices and pelting the temple’s resident llamas with chalk, but Das Adikari seemed to take the irreverence with a grain of salt.

“It’s enough for me to bring people here, to have them be here for a day where that is the central thing in their life, and they can do with it what they want. I don’t care. Whether they’re college kids or Mormons or Catholics or men or women or grandparents or grandkids, that’s the reason that we’re put here and everyone should know about [kirtan].”

At the festival, it doesn’t matter what religion, race, age or sex you are because in the end, it all gets covered by colors anyway. After the festival, as long as the colors last in your hair, or the chant stays in your head, maybe something stays with you from this spontaneous moment of joy as all the colors bleed into one.

Bhakta Ryan, Brisbane, AU: lord nrisimhadeva

kandiya nrsimha-pade magibo kakhana

nirapade navadvipe jugala-bhajana

bhaya bhaya paya yan'ra darsane se hari

prasanna hoibo kabe more daya kari

Lord Nrisimhadeva is hiding in the clay as he comes out his Beautiful and fearsome form becomes hypnotising.

Working all day long then coming home to spend time with my family I am in a deep meditation on Lord Nrisimhadeva form, I see his face at work his presence takes shape in my mind. All the while I can feel the desires in my heart leave and a peaceful calm takes over. Leaving only one desire to sculpt the lords forms forever!!!

Weeping, I will beg at the lotus-feet of Lord Narasimha for the benediction of worshipping Radha and Krsna in Navadvipa, perfectly safe and free from all difficulties. When will this Lord Hari, Whose terrible form strikes fear into fear itself, ever become pleased and show me His mercy?
Even though Lord Narasimha is terrifying toward the sinful souls, He offers great auspiciousness unto the devotees of Lord Krsna headed by Prahlada Maharaja. When will He be pleased to speak words of compassion unto me, a worthless fool, and thereby make me fearless?
He will say, "Dear child! Sit sown freely and live happily here in Sri Gauranga-dhama. May you nicely worship the Divine Couple, and may you develop loving attachment for Their Holy Names. By the mercy of My devotees, all obstacles are cast far away. With a purified heart, just perform the worship of Radha and Krsna, for such worship overflows with sweet nectar."aying this, will that Lord delightedly place His own divine lotus-feet upon my head? I will experience sublime love for the Divine Couple Radha-Krsna and undergo the ecstatic transformations called sattvika. Falling on the ground, I will roll about at the door of Sri Narasimha's temple.

All glories to Lord Narasimhadeva who destroys all the obstacles on the path of devotion!

All glories to Lord Narasimhadeva who grants those who worship Him pure love for the Divine Couple!

Devadeva Mirel, Alachua, USA: Craft Collective : Strawberry Sorbet

Not just jam...we can make sorbet, too.

One Thursday afternoon things got off to a late start. Instead of jam, we took the easy way out. We broke out the ice cream maker and got blending to make David Lebovitz’s strawberry sorbet recipe. Tip: don’t use a stick blender on a shallow bowl of strawberries while standing at white counters.

H.G. Sankarshan das Adhikari, USA: Tuesday 5 April 2011--Ecstatic Govardhana Parikrama--and--Why Do We Need a Guru?

A daily broadcast of the Ultimate Self Realization Course(TM) Tuesday 5 April 2011 The Supreme Personality of Godhead, Lord Sri Krishna, and His eternal consort, Srimati Radharani are enjoying transcendental pastimes in the topmost planet of the spiritual world, Sri Goloka Vrindavan. Today's Thought: Ecstatic Govardhana Parikrama Uploaded from Sri Vrindavan Dhama Today (4 April 2011) we took a party of devotees on Govardhana Parikrama, a circumambulation of Govardhana Hill. Govardhana is the famous hill that was lifted by Krishna 5,000 years ago to protect the inhabitants of Vrindavana from the devastating storm sent by Indra, the king of heaven. At the beginning of our parikrama we sat at the foot of Govardhana, and I told the amazing story of how Govardhana appeared in this universe in a place known as Salmalidvipa, one of the seven islands on Bhumandala, was later transferred to Vraja Dhama. It was a truly sublime experience to spend so many hours fixing our minds on the wonderful Govardhana Hill, which is an incarnation of Krishna. I have a questions about guru. In your article you mentioned that if it's important to have a living guru instead of just accepting Krishna as guru. I would like you to explain the reason why we need a physical (living) guru. Who is a guru? Where can we find a true guru? What is the qualification of a guru? Who can become a guru? And why do we need a guru for spiritualism? If we go to school we need a teacher to guide us. In all walks of life we need someone physical to teach us. Yes, Lord Krishna is the guru of the entire universe. But do you or anyone have a personal relationship with Krishna? You can only use words to talk about Krishna. But do have experience of closeness with Krishna? I would like for you to explain the parampara (disciplic succession) of the guru as well. Lord Krishna is not confined in one form or name. So too the guru must have qualification in all dimension in life? Can you explain? Thank you, S.S.M. Answer: Krishna Orders Us to Accept a Guru Thank you very much for your sincere inquiry. There is only one guru, Lord Sri Krishna. All we need to do to attain spiritual perfection is to fully surrender ourselves unto Lord Sri Krishna. Surrender means that whatever instruction Krishna gives us we are obliged to follow. Krishna directly orders us in the Bhagavad-gita that we are to approach a spiritual master, inquire submissively and render service to him. So if we are truly devoted to Krishna we cannot ignore his order to accept a guru. Who will we accept as our guru? This question is answered in the Mundaka Upanisad. We must accept as our spiritual master that person who is purely following and presenting the teachings of Krishna without any adulteration. The spiritual master has a very special relationship with the Lord because he understands the innermost desire of the Lord to deliver all of the fallen, conditioned souls of this material world back to home, back to Godhead. Therefore he personally experiences closeness with the Lord at every moment, and his words are surcharged with deep spiritual meaning. The spiritual master is not an upstart. He is the humble servant of his spiritual master who is coming in an unbroken line of disciplic succession which begins with Krishna Himself. Our specific preceptorial line is the Brahma-Madhva-Gaudiya Sampradaya listed as follows: 1. Krsna 2. Brahm 3. Nrada 4. Vysa 5. Madhva 6. Padmanbha 7. Nrhari 8. Mdhava 9. Aksobhya 10. Jaya Trtha 11. Jñnasindhu 12. Daynidhi 13. Vidynidhi 14. Rjendra 15. Jayadharma 16. Purusottama 17. Brahmanya Trtha 18. Vysa Trtha 19. Laksmpati 20. Mdhavendra Pur 21. vara Pur, (Nitynanda, Advaita) 22. Lord Caitanya 23. Rpa, (Svarpa, Santana) 24. Raghuntha, Jva 25. Krsnadsa 26. Narottama 27. Vivantha 28. (Baladeva) Jaganntha 29. Bhaktivinoda 30. Gaurakiora 31. Bhaktisiddhnta Sarasvat 32. Bhaktivedanta Swami Prabhupda 33. Disciples of Bhaktivedanta Swami Prabhupda The spiritual master's only duty is to deliver his disciples back to the spiritual world. It is not that he has to fulfill other roles such as curing diseases, supplying money, or reading horoscopes. ISKCON Melbourne, AU: Prayers of Queen Kunti: Seminar Series with Narayani Dasi

Here is the schedule for Narayani Prabhu's upcoming seminar series.

poster.jpg Seminars 1-3 will be given from Wednesday April the 13th. to Friday April the 15th. (7pm. till 8:30pm.) Seminars 4-5 will be given on Saturday April the 16th. from 10am. till 1pm.

We will study Queen Kunti’s prayers and her life as a devotee in five classes. We will learn five lessons to apply to our daily lives. There will be homework: not written tasks, simply the personal application of introspective questions to our worldview.

The five classes will examine Kunti Devi’s prayers. We will apply the following to our lives each day:

Seeing Krishna throughout our day

Seeing how Krishna protects us

Seeing Krishna’s mercy in our life

How to live our day for the pleasure of Krishna

What is the healthy renunciation that appears simultaneously with attraction to Krishna?

Here is a meditation to consider: ‘One should not mechanically receive the teachings of one’s guru. The disciple should be thoughtful and with his own intelligence realize in practice what he has heard from his spiritual master by observing the world around him.’ (AC Bhaktivedanta Swami Prabhupada SB 11.9.31, purport)
