BG 10.17
O mystic being, How can I know you?
sadā always paricintayan wrap my thoughts around you
O mystic being, how can I know you
In such a way that my thoughts always revolve around you?keṣu keṣu ca this and that bhāveṣu situation
In any and every situation.
cintyo ‘si to contemplate bhagavan Supreme Personality of Godhead mayā by me
O mystic being, O supreme personality,
how can I know you
In such a way that my thoughts always revolve around you
Contemplating you in any and every situation?Any and Every Situation
“Any and every situation” (keṣu keṣu ca bhāveṣu) really sets up the huge section that will soon follow in this chapter. What is coming up soon, for the rest of the chapter is a huge list of descriptions of how to appreciate and remember Kṛṣṇa in each and every situation that we encounter in life.
The idea is not to withdraw to a cave… not to ignore our parents, our families our friends because “we want to concentrate on Kṛṣṇa.” The idea instead is how to concentrate on Kṛṣṇa by interacting with any and every situation. That is the gift given to you by Kṛṣṇa in the 10th chapter of Bhagavad Gita, the blueprint by which this becomes possible.
God’s Illusion
It is essential to read A.C. Bhaktivedanta Swāmī Prabhupāda’s commentary on this text: http://vedabase.net/bg/10/17/en
First of all he points out something amazing. He says in the first line that Godhead is covered by maya. However this is a special maya, yoga-maya. Misled philosophers also think that Godhead is covered by maya, but this is an entirely different idea that Prabhupāda presents. These misled persons think that when God incarnates in the world God becomes limited by the material names and forms it adopts and in this way is limited or covered by maya. This is a very childish way to think. The absolute being does not need to become subordinate to his own rules! Even when he plays along with those rules he does so out of free choice and is never bound to or by them.
Prabhupāda presents the idea that God is covered by illusion – but in a different sense. He says that because God is covered by illusion, only those who are free from illusion can directly perceive, understand and interact with him. This is what he says in the first two sentences of his comment on this text.
Thus, the way that God is “covered” by illusion is identical to the way a cloud “covers” the Sun. It is only from the point of view of a person below the cloud that the “covering” takes place.
Illusion (called “maya”) has two functions:
1. To keep those below it from directly encountering God (maha-maya)
2. To facilitate those above it from falling away from their direct encounter with God (yoga-maya)
When we desire to imitate God by having a self-centered life, the illusion keeps us below the clouds. We are like fireflies desiring to be the bright sun. So a great, thick, impenetrable cloud appears to blot out the real sun. This is Maha-maya – the great illusion.
When we lovingly desire to center our lives on God, the same power that formerly kept us in darkness now pulls us up above the cloud. This is called yoga-maya – the magic that causes union.
Yoga maya remains a thick cloud, a cloud so thick it becomes solid ground. Therefore we cannot fall away from our direct experience of Godhead. She places us on the ground above her and supports our relationship to God with a divine magic that permits us to experience Kṛṣṇa well beyond any rational limitations.
Arjuna addresses Kṛṣṇa as the “great mystic,” the yogi, because he is in full control of the power of illusion (yoga-maya and maha-maya). He uses his control of this power to fulfill his desires. What desire can God possibly have? None, he is selfless, he is full of love. Therefore he desires to please his parts and parcels, us. He does so in multifarious ways using his mastery of divine “magic.” Thus he is the supreme yogi.
Seeing God in Nature
The trip from being under the cloud of maha-maya to being above the cloud of yoga-maya is rapid, but not instantaneous. When the ascent begins, we desire to better center ourselves on God, but still have much residual selfishness in our character. In this condition it is very helpful to connect the world of maha-maya directly with God.
This is what “keshu keshu ca bhaaveshu” means. Arjuna specifically askes, “Please tell me how to constantly remember you even when I am still in material consciousness. How can I see you in each and every aspect of this illusion?”
Very soon, in just a few verses, Kṛṣṇa will elaborate a beautiful answer.
This way of linking our material experience to Kṛṣṇa is called vibhuti-yoga. It is the main subject of the 10th Chapter of Gita.

H.G. Sankarshan das Adhikari, USA: Sunday 3 April 2011--When You Have Krishna You Have Everything--and--How to Work & Be Krishna Conscious?
A daily broadcast of the Ultimate Self Realization Course(TM) Sunday 3 April 2011 The Supreme Personality of Godhead, Lord Sri Krishna, and His eternal consort, Srimati Radharani are enjoying transcendental pastimes in the topmost planet of the spiritual world, Sri Goloka Vrindavan. They are beckoning us to rejoin them. (Click on photo to see a larger image.) Our Mission: To help everyone awaken their original Krishna consciousness, which is eternal, full of knowledge and full of bliss. Such a global awakening will, in one stroke, solve all the problems of the world society bringing in a new era of unprecedented peace and prosperity for all. May that day, which the world so desperately needs, come very soon. We request you to participate in this mission by reviving your dormant Krishna consciousness and assisting us in spreading this science all over the world. Dedicated with love to ISKCON Founder-Acharya: His Divine Grace A.C. Bhaktivedanta Swami Prabhupada, our beloved spiritual master, and to you, our dear readers. Today's Thought: When You Have Krishna You Have Everything Uploaded from Sri Vrindavan Dhama When you have Krishna, you have everything. Anything else you have may in this world is slipping through your fingers. Today you may have it, but tomorrow you lose it. Even if you are the most powerful, influential, and wealthy person in the entire universe, your position is only temporary. When all is said and done there is only one thing that you can really possess, and that is your Krishna consciousness. Therefore there is nothing more important than awakening the Krishna consciousness that is now sleeping in your heart. Sankarshan Das Adhikari Answers According to the Vedic Version: Question: How to Work and Be Krishna Conscious? I have a doubt...Earning money is essential to be able to live a decent life. But earning means going into a company and working with the materialistic people involved in politics, cheating, jealously and other negative emotions. When we spend 10-12 hrs in such a environment it certainly contaminates our mind and is very very disturbing. I am in a dilemma...I have to earn money but at the same time I do not want to work within such a contaminated work culture. What do I do? Where do I work? Please help. About me...I have been working in a multi-national corporation as an assistant manager for the past 5.5 years, and the way we are treated is very disrespectful. I find it difficult to accept being treated like this or see anyone being treated with disrespect. I have therefore been on leave without pay for the last 5-6 months. But then I have to earn. But I can't even go back to such a culture where people are only concerned with money, promotions and are not even decent human beings. Please advise. A.D. Answer: Work at Your Present Job for Krishna Arjuna also wanted to quit his job. A battlefield would not seem to be the best place for transcendental meditation on the Supreme Lord. But yet Krishna ordered him that he must execute his professional duty and offer the results of his work to Krishna. You are like Arjuna in the beginning of the Bhagavad-gita. You have dropped your bow and arrows and you are refusing to fight for the sake of so-called Krishna consciousness. You are forgetting that real Krishna consciousness is to execute the service given to you by Krishna or His representative, the bona fide spiritual master, and offer the results of your work to Krishna. Therefore my best advice to you is that you must resume your job and chant nicely at least 16 rounds of Hare Krishna japa mala every day before going to your office. You must also strictly avoid illicit sex, intoxication, meat eating, and gambling. If you will seriously chant and follow these principles, you will be fully protected from the material energy even though you have to spend many hours at work every day. In this way by good sadhana and by performing the austerity of your job for Krishna, you will make steady advancement in Krishna consciousness. If we work only for ourselves, no job will be satisfying. But when we work for Krishna, any job will be satisfying. ISKCON Melbourne, AU: Today's Darsana
Melbourne Mahaprabhu Mandir's darsana never fails to brighten up our existence isn't it, especially today; the Deities are resplendent in such sunny colours.
We are eternally thankful to Srila Prabhupada for having brought down Goloka Vrindavana for us; he is opening our darkened eyes and day by day, giving us the divine vision to transcend matter and embrace the spiritual world.
How can we ever repay Srila Prabhupada?:
"...day by day...Prabhupada, three things I pray:
* listen to you clearly,
* follow you sincerely.
* try to serve you dearly...
day, by day, by day, by day, by day..."

H.H. Satsvarupa das Goswami (Ret.): 268–Poem for April 2nd
4:43 A.M.
A Writer of Pieces
New format–I will begin with a poem written on the day of its printing. Then I will print random excerpts of books I have printed over the last 30 years. I hope this variety will be pleasing.
Poem for April 2nd
Narayana told me when he was
young he used to draw on sensual
power and false ego to get
his enthusiasm but now he
has to go deeper for utsaha.
Where do you go? I asked.
He said today he did it in
prayer and chanting. “You tell
me,” he said. That’s
good. Prayer and chanting are
substantial acts.He said he also needs to
rest and reduce his
stress level. I am relaxing
chanting early rapidly
with attention to the
sounds, then gathering
myself for autobiographical
episodes in a deep
mode of honest creative writing.I am satisfied with my life
with my companions and
broadcasting a daily poem
and writing from the past.
I am grateful to Krishna
that my pains are reduced
and I can claim a major
part of the day for active
service. Worship of the
Deities and imploring Them
for reciprocation is an important
thing for me.
I hope Narayana finds his
way to reduced pains
and increased service.Same with Baladeva
who has been suffering
from ups and downs.
Yesterday he comically asked
me, “Do you know what
it’s like to be a sparrow?”
He compared himself to the
little bird who is hopping
around in springtime. He
hasn’t been as regulated
in his schedule this month
but said its no big thing.
We hope to correct ourselves
and be satisfying in Krishna’s
eyes as the season changes.• Email to a friend • •
H.H. Satsvarupa das Goswami (Ret.): OLD FRIENDS
From The Best I Could Do (Unpublished)
“Your old spiritual master, your young spiritual master, your eternal spiritual master. Will you always remain a disciple? Yes. I am always a part and parcel. I sing samsara and I am able to meditate on each verse as I wave the incense before him. He is the one who gives us prasadam, who worships Radha=Krishna. When you say sri-radhika-madhavayor-apara, you don’t have to think of Them but of he who teaches of Sri Radhika and Madhava and assists Them in the kunjas (That you don’t have to analyze, you can just feel with faith. What Visvanatha Cakrtavarti says is true and true of your master. And then he is the direct servant of the Lord Hari. It is not a slight of Lord Hari, but rather Lord Hari says that we should honor His servants that way. We don’t say the servant is himself Hari, but how else are we going to receive God? So we worship him as good as God, it is right, and to do so, Hari likes it that way. Unless you please Him, you are nowhere, and so all the verses, each one I think of, and that is one of the best prayers, best songs in the whole creation, samsara dava.
“Now I am telling you and then I will go outside for more talks, if I hold up, and say the world is better with Krishna consciousness as Prabhupada taught it, and we are still carrying on . . .
“. . . See time as Krishna. You try to fill up your time with worthy work. Oh, what is it I wanted to do? Next there is the gayatri duty. You put on your coat and boots and go out on the walk, and this time you are talking about Prabhupada on the walk. At the bridge, look down on the rushing water. Chant on beads, keep walking and talk. Something becomes intelligence, is allowed to you. In this way you fill up the time p[ockets. Return to the house, more to look forward to, to the little bowl of cereal, just enough and not too much. Then you can rest after your morning’s labors? Did you work hard enough? But you can’t press it too far. I left notes for Madhu, “Give me new batteries, copy the tapes, read this, let us discuss how to avoid headaches, let us plan what to do with late summer and in 1966 to avoid the crowd.’
“Fill in the time . . . before it’s too late. And anyway, if you run out of time, no more, no more. You have to give up taste, even for the sweet hot cereal and hot milk. So if you have to give it up later, why not now? Because we are still living. We cling to it. This too is a form of devotional service. But at the time of death, devotional service takes the shape of giving it all up. I can’t give it up now but I will then. Now I do dovetail my living energy in his purpose. But I need to hear what this is, this surrendering to Krishna which they say is the essence of all prayer. And Prabhupada says it is the purpose of human life to work just for His pleasure. I don’t grasp this yet because I want to do things for myself. That means I don’t understand, I am in false ego.
“In a book of poems, in-between the sections, I found this, which seems to describe me all right and the reflections I am seeking in this book so far:
“‘In headaches and in worry
Vaguely life leaks away.
And Time will have its fancy
To-morrow or To-day.’
From In Praise of the Mahajanas and Other Poems (1983)
“3. LORD SIVA“He is the greatest of Vaisnavas,
his picture everywhere in India;
Mahadeva is almost God Himself
as yogurt is almost milk,
yet changed.
He is lord of the ghosts,
who came again as Sankara
and taught the confusing, dangerous Mayavada.“He frequents the crematorium
yet millions adore his snake-enwrapped form,
erect-sitting, ever-youthful renunciant
beside his demigoddess wife,
the master and mistress of the world.“Though we are not going much to him
because his service is different—
to tend to the demonic with their
ghastly desires like Vrkasura
who cut his own flesh in hopes
Siva would grant him
a boon to destroy all living heads,
so we do not much travel with him
who travels with the ghosts,
on Nandi the bull, yet we know
he is the greatest devotee
and he always remembers the Lord
whom we also worship.“Although his is a different kind of service
it is unalloyed bhakti
as when he stepped forward to catch the Ganges
or when, on command, he dances and destroys.‘Though we scorn the demons
who wrongly approach him,
yet eagerly we hear from him
about the highest worship
serving the servants of Lord Visnu.
And when Siva speaks
beneath his tree on Mount Kailash,
Mahajanas like Narada gather;
the subject is always visnu-bhakti
and detachment from the world.
Who knowing rightly will not
offer honor to Mahadeva? From Journal and Poems, Book I (January-June 1985)
Krishna in Nature
“Black and white is often thought of as bland and colorless. For instance, a black and white television set is usually felt to be without color and therefore less appealing. But the black-and-white duck I saw this morning startled me with its beauty. So white! So black! And the colors so cleanly divided on each section of his body. He had a red beak, and he was accompanied by his mate (devotees later told me that the ducks are called Tufted ducks).
“The ducks were lively. They swam here and there, sometimes stretching their bodies straight and stiff, leaving behind a rippling wake. They dove underwater headfirst, and I had to guess where they might surface. The show continued for several minutes as they moved downstream. I hurried from window to window to catch the last sight of them as they went around the bend. The morning sun was just coming out. No one was around. It was a few degrees above freezing.
“In His most intimate original feature, Krishna chooses to live in a natural rural setting. Vrndavana is not a big city like Dvaraka. It is in the forest groves, by the River Yamuna, and in grazing pastures and on Govardhana Hill. Here Krishna enjoys His most intimate lila. Our own attraction for rural peace and beauty is actually an expression of the spirit soul’s original desire to live in Vrndavana.
“But Vrndavana is not simply ‘rural.’ All the living creatures there are glorifying Krishna. In the material world we like to wake up in the country where we can hear the songs of the birds or watch the ducks in the water. But this pleasure is only the faintest indication of the pleasure of seeing and hearing the ducks, birds and bees directly glorifying Krishna in Krishna-loka. When the sky is bright and clear, we say, ‘It’s a nice day.’ But that appreciation is increased a million-fold when we see not only the blue of space but the blue all-beautiful form of the Personality of Godhead.”

Bharatavarsa.net: Bhakti Vikasa Swami: Sudras require how to plough
As for the children and Gurukula, the village children may learn English, but also they must learn how to plough. It is not that everyone has to be educated. It has become a fashion to learn English and then search out service in the cities. The sudras do not require English, but require how to plough.

Srimad Bhagavatam 12.3.22-25 - Pathetic condition of dharma in Kali-yuga (dyutam panam striyah suna yatradharmas catur-vidhah)
12.3.22
In Dvāpara-yuga the religious qualities of austerity, truth, mercy and charity are reduced to one half by their irreligious counterparts — dissatisfaction, untruth, violence and enmity.
12.3.23
In the Dvāpara age people are interested in glory and are very noble. They devote themselves to the study of the Vedas, possess great opulence, support large families and enjoy life with vigor. Of the four classes, the kṣatriyas and brāhmaṇas are most numerous.
12.3.24
In the age of Kali only one fourth of the religious principles remains. That last remnant will continuously be decreased by the ever-increasing principles of irreligion and will finally be destroyed.
12.3.25
In the Kali age people tend to be greedy, ill-behaved and merciless, and they fight one another without good reason. Unfortunate and obsessed with material desires, the people of Kali-yuga are almost all śūdras and barbarians.
Bhagavatam class given on Friday, 1st April 2011
7.10.65-66
Nārada Muni continued: Thereafter, Lord Kṛṣṇa, by His own personal potency, consisting of religion, knowledge, renunciation, opulence, austerity, education and activities, equipped Lord Śiva with all the necessary paraphernalia, such as a chariot, a charioteer, a flag, horses, elephants, a bow, a shield and arrows. When Lord Śiva was fully equipped in this way, he sat down on the chariot with his arrows and bow to fight with the demons.
7.10.65-66

Nityananda Chandra Das, Dallas TX: TEXAS FAITH 38: The Blessings and Burdens of Life Online
Dallas Morning News,Each week we will post a question to a panel of about two dozen clergy, laity and theologians, all of whom are based in Texas or are from Texas. They will chime in with their responses to the question of the week. And you, readers, will be able to respond to their answers through the comment box.A recent United Methodist Reporter article quotes clergy and laity who take a regular break from Facebook, Twitter, text messaging, regular email and even cell phones. Some have a "tech Sabbath" in which they refrain from such communication one day a week. Others plan to use Lent as the occasion for going offline.
"Digital distraction" is one term for the problem they see when people are instantly, but often shallowly, communicating and multi-tasking. Even one of the Twitter co-founders admitted in a recent public radio interview to being overwhelmed at times by email, and having to let it go for stretches.
This week, we asked our Texas Faith panelists the following: What do you see as the blessings and burdens of social networking and the general ease with which people stay in touch these days? Would you, through your religious tradition, advocate periods of withdrawal?
We posed the questions by email, and got answers back - in a matter of minutes, with one panelist - by email. So there's some irony in this week's Texas Faith.
Here's what the panelists said:
NITYANANDA CHANDRA DAS, minister of ISKCON (International Society for Krishna Consciousness), Dallas
"Vairagya" means the act of giving something up for a higher spiritual goal. This subject is discussed in great detail in an ancient book known as Nectar of Devotion. Vairagya has been described to be either "phalgu," false renunciation or "yukta," practical renunciation.
If I was to withdraw all of my money from the bank account and throw it into the trash I would be acting under the assumption that the money was mine to reject. But in the Bhagavad Gita it is understood that Krishna, God, owns everything. Giving up something that is not yours in the first place is simply false.
Here is an example: A wallet is left on the street. The greedy man wants to keep it for himself. The false renunciate rejects it as materialistic and the honest man returns it to the owner.
Therefore the honest spiritualist uses everything, which may include Facebook, in the service of God and reject all, which may include Facebook, that is not conducive to loving service to God. One must use spiritual intelligence to apply this principle.

Nityananda Chandra Das, Dallas TX: TEXAS FAITH 37: What's the role of religious faith when there are no good choices?
Dallas Morning News,Each week we will post a question to a panel of about two dozen clergy, laity and theologians, all of whom are based in Texas or are from Texas. They will chime in with their responses to the question of the week. And you, readers, will be able to respond to their answers through the comment box. When a Catholic hospital in Phoenix recently terminated a pregnancy to save the life of the mother, the church acted. The bishop stripped the hospital of its affiliation with the diocese and excommunicated the nun who approved the abortion. The hospital said the 27-year-old mother would almost certainly died otherwise. But abortion runs counter to Catholic faith. And there's no doubt the bishop had the right to do what he did.
Nicholas Kristof of The New York Times suggests the episode underscores a clash between two expressions of religious faith. Without litigating the deep and difficult issue of abortion itself (if we can), consider a broader question: What's the role of faith when there's no good choice? Sometimes doctrine says one thing but circumstances say another. What happens when both sides believe they have the fundamentals of faith on their side? How do we bring our faith to bear in situations where there is no good choice?
Our Texas Faith panel weighs in. And it's telling that two members invoke Dietrich Bonhoeffer, which is where we start with the panel's answers. Read on.
NITYANANDA CHANDRA DAS, minister of ISKCON (International Society for Krishna Consciousness), DallasA question like this illustrates the need for deeper spiritual philosophical understanding. As the Nectar Of Instruction states that ones spiritual life can be hampered by following religious regulations strictly without deeper understanding or abandoning religious regulations due to whimsical practice and understanding. One must search out what is the deeper principle that is being upheld by said rule.
For the most part people in general do not have deep philosophical understanding of the self. They do not understand that the soul is different from the body, nor is it understood, by many that the self, the soul, has its own needs separate from the needs of its vehicle, the body. As a GPS is only useful when it can tell us our position on the map, so similarly we can only achieve our goal of happiness and peace when we understand our metaphysical position. Routes are bound to be full errors if one does not know where he is on the map.
So regarding the question that framed this question. The soul enters into the ovum via the semen at the time of conception. This is why abortion is considered by the wise to be abominable. Because the mother is meant to provide protection rather than harm. Also suicide is considered abominable because the human form of life provides the great wealth of the chance to become fully God conscious. In fact all life is valuable and should not be taken unnecessarily, we see people often eat slaughtered animals when such a diet is unnecessary. I would put forward that the family made the correct choices in their actions but as Lord Krishna states in the Gita, "Every endeavor is covered by some fault." Faults become nullified if we completely devote our heart to God. If that woman does not devote her life to God then that fault will harm her as karma in the next life. For she would have taken a life to continue a fruitless life.

Nityananda Chandra Das, Dallas TX: TEXAS FAITH 36: Does materialism compromise the holiday season?
Dallas Morning News,Each week we will post a question to a panel of about two dozen clergy, laity and theologians, all of whom are based in Texas or are from Texas. They will chime in with their responses to the question of the week. And you, readers, will be able to respond to their answers through the comment box.North Texas has been talking this fall about "Tinsel," Hank Stuever's non-fiction account of Christmas in Frisco. The Washington Post writer spent three consecutive Christmases in Frisco, chronicling the way the townspeople celebrate Christmas - this, as a window into how contemporary Americans observe the holiday. What he records is to a great extent a people who have allowed consumerism and an addiction to spectacle to overshadow the spiritual heart of the holiday. This is a familiar critique of American life - which doesn't, of course, make it untrue.
In this holiday season, we ask to what extent materialism compromises the meaning of religious holiday observance here (Christmas, Hanukkah, whatever your own faith tradition or what you see of others' traditions).
Does materialism compromise the celebration of Christmas or other religious holidays? Can you point to examples of Texans being true to the spirit of the holiday? Our Texas Faith panelist weighs in after the jumpNITYANANDA CHANDRA DAS, minister of ISKCON (International Society for Krishna Consciousness), Dallas
In general there are various motivation one may a approach or pleasing God or a celebrating religious festival.
1) Bhaya -- out of fear.
2) Asha -- for satisfying material aspirations.
3) Kartavya-buddhi -- out of a sense of duty (literally, "a mentality of what should be done").
4) Räga -- out of genuine attraction for the Lord.
One Vaishnava saint, Bhaktivinode Thakura elaborates on these motivations: Those who take to worship of the Lord out of bhaya, äshä or kartavya- buddhi are not on such a pure level. Those who worship the Lord according to räga are real worshipers.... Bhaya o äshä nitästa heya -- Bhaya and äshä are extremely low in spiritual nature. When a practioner's intelligence becomes clear, he gives up bhaya and äshä, and kartavyabuddhi becomes his sole motive. As long as räga towards the Lord has not appeared, the devotee should not give up worship according to kartavya-buddhi.

Rejection/Acceptance
Winnipeg, Manitoba
Not all that you give out to people gets accepted. For instance, last night at the gathering of yogis, at least one yoga teacher got up and left without having a meal. He liked the chanting but not the philosophy as I presented it. My guess for the non-acceptance is that I spoke about the Absolute more in terms of being a person as opposed to a power. It was a bit disappointing to see him go. "You failed." I thought to myself. "You cannot satisfy all of the people all of the time," I heard our guru, Srila Prabhupada say at Lake Michigan in Chicago. That rings true a lot.
I made a number of visits today for home blessings and also including a kirtan at Be Yoga Studio. There was a full acceptance feeling coming from the facilitator, Tiffany.
Here's where real approval came from today. I made a visit to the home of Rachitambara and family. She is a phenomenal devotee of Krishna. Her father, now deceased, was knighted by the queen, via the Governor General of Canada as Sir Graham Fraser. When Rachitambara decided to become one of those Hare Krishnas when she was a young woman, her Dad, Sir Graham Fraser wasn't really thrilled.
Of all her years in devotional life which was spent in India as a school master, in Austrailia, France, and Canada Rachitambara said he never really approved of her chosen lifestyle. She was telling me this with her usual oh-well, what-can-you-do attitude, but then she described how I was rolling through Ottawa on my third cross Canada trek. Local television set their cameras out to follow me walking and stuck with me for several blocks.
Sri Graham Fraser watched the news that night on TV covering the story of the walking monk. "My dad got so excited and immediately called me to give compliments about my Hare Krishna ways. After all these years he finally approved when he saw that telecast."
"Well, there, that was a feel-good remark," I thought. It goes to show that someone may reject you, another accept and then there’s a third category. Someone may say "no" and then suddenly turn around and say "yes."

Back in Winnipeg
Winnipeg, Manitoba
Before embarking on the Westjet flight to Winnipeg, a young South East Asian man, who was also boarding, said to me, “You did my moodan.”
“I did?” I asked the fellow, who was beaming.
“In 1985,” he said. “You probably don’t remember, you meet so many people.”
I doubted that he remembered either. A moondan is a haircutting ceremony that a child receives at about age one to relieve himself of babyhood. The shedding of baby hair denotes change, growth. It is a purificatory stage one goes through.
I addressed the fellow, saying that he has a good crop of hair and everything turned out okay.
“Your name?” I asked.
“Karuna. I know you from the photos,” he said, followed by more conversation until we set to our assigned seats. I was reminded that in the context of my monk lifestyle, there have been priestly duties also factored into my responsibilities.
The two hour flight landed me safely to the Winnipeg Airport to meet Daruka, a clean head-shaven devotee in his forties, who was my support person during the last cross-Canada walk. Daruka drove me to the edge of the city’s Granola Belt to 108 Chestnut Street, the home of Vrnda, our bhakti coordinator. We had refreshments at Carolin’s. Organic no GM Saskatoon berry juice was our fuel until we trekked through St. John’s Park. Daruka then took me near a famous corner of fierce cold wind, the corner of Portage and Main, nicknamed Portage and Pain.
Finally the day was topped with a sat-sang, a gathering of yogis and bhaktas (devotees). The chanting together was sweet indeed and our discussion was on the topic of how to overcome dualities. It’s all a matter of changing our consciousness, about change, about growth.

Japa Group: Attentive Chanting Is Very Important
I do appreciate that I persist patiently and that I’m able to control my mind even when there is no nectarean taste in chanting. I’m just suggesting that if I could be alert and bring the mind back to hearing, then why not try to go further. All the authorities say that attentive chanting is very important and leads to thinking about Krishna’s form, activities, qualities and pastimes. They must be right.

Toronto Sankirtan Team, CA: Sum and substance
The duty of saintly persons, therefore, is to take up seriously the cause of sanatana-dharma and try to reestablish it for the benefit of the entire human society. The Krishna consciousness movement has been started according to this principle. As stated in Srimad-Bhagavatam (12.3.51):
kaler dosha-nidhe rajan
asti hy eko mahan gunah
kirtanad eva krishnasya
mukta-sangah param vrajet
The entire Kali-yuga is full of faults. It is like an unlimited ocean of faults. But the Krishna consciousness movement is very authorized. Therefore, following in the footsteps of Sri Caitanya Mahaprabhu, who five hundred years ago inaugurated the movement of sankirtana, krishna-kirtana, we are trying to introduce this movement, according to superior orders, all over the world. Now, if the inaugurators of this movement strictly follow the regulative principles and spread this movement for the benefit of all human society, they will certainly usher in a new way of life by reestablishing sanatana-dharma, the eternal occupational duties of humanity. The eternal occupational duty of the human being is to serve Krishna. Jivera 'svarupa' haya -- krishnera 'nitya-dasa.' [Cc. Madhya 20.108]. This is the purport of sanatana-dharma. Sanatana means nitya, or "eternal," and krishna-dasa means "servant of Krishna." The eternal occupational duty of the human being is to serve Krishna. This is the sum and substance of the Krishna consciousness movement.
