H.G. Sankarshan das Adhikari, USA: Sunday 17 April 2011--Don't Try to Enjoy, Render Service Instead--and--Bhagavatam Lists All Avatars?
j A daily broadcast of the Ultimate Self Realization Course(TM) Sunday 17 April 2011 The Supreme Personality of Godhead, Lord Sri Krishna, and His eternal consort, Srimati Radharani are enjoying transcendental pastimes in the topmost planet of the spiritual world, Sri Goloka Vrindavan. They are beckoning us to rejoin them. (Click on photo to see a larger image.) Our Mission: To help everyone awaken their original Krishna consciousness, which is eternal, full of knowledge and full of bliss. Such a global awakening will, in one stroke, solve all the problems of the world society bringing in a new era of unprecedented peace and prosperity for all. May that day, which the world so desperately needs, come very soon. We request you to participate in this mission by reviving your dormant Krishna consciousness and assisting us in spreading this science all over the world. Dedicated with love to ISKCON Founder-Acharya: His Divine Grace A.C. Bhaktivedanta Swami Prabhupada, our beloved spiritual master, and to you, our dear readers. Today's Thought: Don't Try to Enjoy, Render Service Instead Uploaded from Riga, Latvia The key to forever being happy in transcendental all-blissful Krishna consciousness is to always be the servant in all circumstances. Never try to be the enjoyer. If one always engages himself as the servant of Krishna, guru, and Vaisnavas, there will be no end of his Krishna consciousness bliss, and he will be doing the highest good for all other beings by always revealing through his words and deeds the path of devotional service, the original, natural, pure state of existence. Sankarshan Das Adhikari Teaching the Perfection of Service Riga, Latvia 15 April 2011 http://www.backtohome.com/images/2011-Spring/Riga_Lecture.JPG Answers According to the Vedic Version: Question: Bhagavatam Lists All Avatars? Are all the avatars of Lord Krishna depicted in the Srimad Bhagavatam? A.S. Answer: Only a Sample The Srimad Bhagavatam only depicts a few of the avatars of Krishna because they are as innumerable as the waves of the ocean. But it has kindly listed all the incarnations that will appear in this age of Kali to protect us from being misguided by the multitude of cheaters who are falsely claiming to be incarnations of God. Stephen Covey, Dale Carnegie, Eckhart Tolle, Depak Chopra, Anthony Robbins... the list of self development gurus of the age is endless. These insightful thinkers have shaped today’s world of organizations and relationships, offering a wholesome alternative to the mechanistic trends of consumerism. Recently, while reading some self-help literature, the perspectives stressing positivity and selflessness definitely resonated with me, bearing striking resemblance to eastern worldviews. It’s clear in my mind that different philosophers and teachers all share common core principles of spirituality regardless of civilization or culture.
One doubt, however, did come to mind. I wonder whether such approaches to life are simply an adjustment of the mind. While offering insights which lead to a progressive, peaceful and happy life, I am unsure as to how much such self-development books actually equip and train one to genuinely imbibe this positive approach. Can a deep sense of selflessness and kindness towards the universe manifest on the level of the intellect? Can we force ourselves to forgive others? Can we make a determination to remain equipoised in the midst of the most provoking situations? Maybe such changes in our instinctive emotional response come from a deeper transformation of consciousness. The 64 million dollar question is how we achieve such a change. After all, we don’t want to be window shoppers who are captivated by the products, but have no power to purchase them.
Ancient wisdom literatures describe the product and simultaneously offer the paycheck. While describing the character, qualities and persona of a perfect spiritualist, books like the Bhagavad-gita also equip one with the spiritual tools and technology to achieve such an elevated conscious state. It offers information, as well as transformation. While we may doubt that ancient practices of meditation and yoga can actually bring about tangible changes in ones approach to life, the practical experience of dedicated spiritualists indicate something quite different. Since the calculated procedure outlined by great teachers awakens the spontaneous purity within, the Bhagavad-gita proposes that we need not learn something new, but rather invoke what is already within.• Email to a friend • •
Bharatavarsa.net: Bhakti Vikasa Swami: study our books to face scholars and philosophers
But now we should increase our study of our literatures, so that we can answer the scholars and philosophers who will be coming forward as our movement attracts their attention. So you should carefully study our books very thoroughly because there are many questionnaires coming daily and I shall forward them to you also. It is most essential that all the initiated devotees study our books and learn this philosophy very well. And to get the strength for understanding these, everyone must chant sixteen rounds of beads daily without fail. In this way, when the devotee is constantly engaged in Krsna Consciousness, following the regulative principles rigidly, Krsna will give all intelligence from within how to make steady progress in Krsna Consciousness. I hope in Buffalo center you will ask all the boys and girls to follow this method, because henceforward we will have to face many scholars and philosophers to stabilize our Krsna Consciousness movement.

Bharatavarsa.net: Bhakti Vikasa Swami: Holi festival
> The traditional Holi festival seems to be gaining popularity in ISKCON. > Although there are some references to Holi in Srila Prabhupada's books, I > am unable to find any reference from Prabhupada (positive or negative) > about conducting such festivals in ISKCON campus. > > Can someone shed some light on this with proper pramana?
On that day on ISKCON campuses we dedicate all our time and attention to celebrating the appearance of Lord Caitanya. So there should be no question of squirting colors etc. as is done on Holi. If householders wish to do so outside an ISKCON campus, that is up to them, but better they also devote their full attention to observing Gaura Purnima.

Bharatavarsa.net: Bhakti Vikasa Swami: "Mother"
---------- Forwarded Message ---------- Letter PAMHO:17913599 (166 lines) From: Internet: "Sikhi Mahiti das" Date: 29-Jul-09 21:28 (17:28 -0400)
Here is a nice story about addressing all ladies as "Mother".
I visited one ISKCON vaisnava who is a successful prasadam restaurateur at one of his Philadelphia (USA) establishments. He is also a great preacher and everyone in the area and local government loves him. While in his office, I heard him address one of the young ladies that work for him as "Mother". I asked the young lady how long she had been a devotee. She said that she was not a devotee.
Hari prabhu, laughed and said "I address all my lady employees as mother." I was amazed how this 20 year old lady actually enjoyed being called mother. She doesn't practice Krsna Consciousness. Hari said he calls all the women he deals with in business or at the temple as mother.
This just goes to show how we can introduce some aspects of vaisnava culture in any part of the world.

Talk by Mahat:
When a person comes to take seriously the spiritual path, they are often met with resistance with those loved ones who adhere to the values of our materialistic society. People who subscribe to materialistic values and persons who subscribe to spiritual values can be as different as day and night. We often can be perplexed on how to make this transition without unnecessarily creating a disturbance during such an important transition.• Email to a friend • •

H.H. Satsvarupa das Goswami (Ret.): 282—Poem for April 16
5:03 A.M.
A Writer of Pieces
New format—I will begin with a poem written on the day of its printing. Then I will print random excerpts of books I have printed over the last 30 years. I hope this variety will be pleasing.
Poem for April 16
It’s a big day for Baladeva,
three Guyanese devotees are
coming to help him work in the yard,
digging holes for bulbs and seeds,
trimming hedges, raking the earth
all day. Narayana started taking
a long walk to help his back,
I continue my short walk, run
out of breath on the second lap.Everything must be connected to Krishna
or it’s a waste of time. The
sages wanted to hear of Pariksit’s
stopping the sudra from beating a cow if
it was linked to the pastimes of
the Lord. I have to make that
connection in all I do.
Don’t plan to attend the
visiting sannyasi’s lecture tonight
because it is too late, and I must keep my schedule. But
tomorrow he’s supposed to be
speaking earlier and I can attend.
How is this connected to Krishna?
Because I did all my rounds
and the gayatri and kept the holy
names in my mind and later in
the morning I will write like
reminisces of life in ISKCON
or a take on Prabhupada and
that counts for linking your
life to the Supreme. You
be careful to direct your
action in that way.Unlinked is nowhere,
but I can always do it
by turning to Him in
devotional service, it’s
second nature to me
and I should not doubt
my intention to offer
all in bhakti.• Email to a friend • •
H.H. Satsvarupa das Goswami (Ret.): OLD FRIENDS
From Prabhupada Meditations, Volume II
“Prabhupada Idioms
“The dictionary defines an idiom as “a style or form of expression that is characteristic of an individual.” One has to know how Prabhupada used idioms by listening to his lectures or being present for his talks. Each of these phrases can open a whole world of Prabhupada realization.
“’Everything is there.’“Prabhupada said this to indicate that everything we need to know is present in the Vedic literature. He said it to convey urgency. By the chanting of Hare Krishna, you can directly contact Krishna. By reading Bhagavad-gita, you can know your relationship with Krishna. Prabhupada enumerated points such as these, and then, as if realizing there were no end to the favorable items, he would interject, “Everything is there.” He said it with pride as a follower of Krishna consciousness, and with a confidence that there was nothing lacking in Bhagavad-gita. Everything is there, so you should turn to it.
“’Thank you very much.’
“This was Prabhupada’s trademark at the end of every lecture. One might say this is nothing more than a formality: the speaker thanks the audience for their attentive hearing. Because Srila Prabhupada did it, however, it is a trademark to remind us of him. We wonder about it. Sometimes we even imagine that Prabhupada was being a touch sarcastic when he said, “Thank you very much.” With some audiences, it sounds like he was amused. Perhaps I am reading the mind of the acarya by these interpretations. Each person will hear it in his own way. At least let us keep his “Thank you very much” in our collection of remembrances.
“’This is going on.’
“Prabhupada used this to express the opposite mood of ‘Everything is there.’ By saying, “This is going on,” he pointed to the rascaldom and nonsense that goes on in the material world, especially in Kali-yuga. He stated it at the end of a string of anomalies. The politicians are cheating the people by taxing and not giving them anything in return. People in general are in ignorance about the goal of life; gurus claim they are God but are interested in illicit sex . . . After stating a list of malpractices, Prabhupada added, ‘This is going on.’ They are getting away with murder. The cheating continues.
“Rascaldom goes on by misuse of free will. The sadhu and Krishna know very well this is happening. They are not naïve. Prabhupada was also aware that rascaldom will continue as long as there is a material world, as long as people do not take to Krishna consciousness. Acts of irreligion pass in the guise of religion. ‘This is going on.’
“’What is the difficulty?’
“Prabhupada said this after explaining how easy and accessible Krishna consciousness is. Anyone can offer Krishna a fruit, a flower or some water. Even a child can take part in the chanting—’Where is the difficulty?’Just as we were born from our father, so our father had his father, and his father had a father; if you go back ultimately, you’ll find that there is an original father who is the source of everyone. In this way we can understand that Krishna is the seed-giving Father—where is the difficulty to understand this?
“By this expression, Prabhupada encouraged us to come forward and not make excuses. If we take to Krishna consciousness, we will not find it difficult. Prabhupada used the phrase as a challenge to those who believe spiritual life is too problematic. Prabhupada untangled the problems with logic and sastra and then interjected this challenge.”
From Human at Best (2008)
“Forgotten Slokas
“1.
“These foolish things were
not observed by the madmen
They missed the poignant ray.“They forgot the essence
saw only the outside
of the cream puff or
the guru growing old
and forgetting a Sanskrit verse
here and there.“Please see my essence dependent
on You. Whatever I speak
comes from You.
You, Lord, write all the articles and poems,
but You give them different names“2.
“Good times were easier then
they didn’t know
the full extent
that evil
lurked within, beside
lust and wrath“or they did, but had
capacity to bounce back
and be joyful.
He could play with the
best. My Krishna allowed
me to sing His names,
and I paid attention to
what I was doing.“Walked under a dark
morning sky.“3.
“Stormy weather ever since
me and the movement
ain’t been together. It
keeps raining all the
time.“Don’t know why there’s
no let-up. Ever since
I forgot my place and
found fault in he
who blessed us all“and gave us our life’s work.
Now I regret and hope it’s
not too late.“I count on him taking
me back
remembering my younger days.
And his disciples will
be my friends.“But it’s true I have
some handicaps and
some blessing for alone-
work.“He played strong and manly,
and I’m his follower forever.“Pure devotees such as the Pandavas want to see Krishna, and in Vrndavana the cowherd people who are so dear to Him—we cannot even imagine the heart-wrenching separation of Radha and Krishna. Devotees who never met Krishna may also feel separation from Him by hearing about Him from pure devotees. Consider Rukmini’s hearing about Krishna and wanting to marry Him. And the Pulinda woman. O Krishna, save me, I’ve lost my sense of discrimination. I’ve fallen into the well of pride.
“You poor louse, you poor beggar. You think you are better than your brothers—it’s sickening how you do that on the sly. Laugh at you, or cry.
“I know you are a pipsqueak, for sure. Wouldn’t stand up in a fight. Don’t know how a typist, skinny, scaredy like you, climbed in the hierarchy of ISKCON as you did, to the very top of presumption, the maha-bhagavatas of the 1980s. Take it home. You’re a good boy at a Sunday matinee, don’t drink liquor but sit and watch the jazz group led by Dolphy and think how you can dovetail it. Improvise.
“I am the only one in the room writing this. I believe you have to be on Sunday groove.
“Do what you want. No, not always, not exactly. Tell your doctor, ‘The psyche angle is coming up.’ I have so many headache-free days in a row. I’m wondering, ‘Why be a hermit?’ Always dissatisfied, remember? I used to be a manager and then wanted to be free of it and travel as a sannyasi in the USA. Restless. Plan a trip abroad, but after one day, stop. Tell my secretary, ‘Find me a writing retreat.’ Schedule a several-month stay in the holy dhama, but after several weeks of harassing meetings ask to get out of there. Where is safe? Where is desirable?
“Take shelter of Krishna. What does that mean for each of us? Some are so eager to be in Vrndavana at Karttika and make prayer there and feel uplifted. Hurry, go, before you die. But others feel tied down by responsibilities in the West. Or they make the best of it here, justify themselves . . .
“Afraid of the air, the guns, the glint in the terrorists’ eyes. Keep writing, writing, risking journalist. Turn in your story from Pakistan front lines. Your Vrndavana journal. The taxi ride. The dead cat (not ours). The first you see and what you think. The first Godbrother you see, first pranams and pleasantries exchanged. Don’t be so bitchy, smile, or at least grin, placid. Admit you’re a fool, roll in dust (awkward). When the temple president asks, ‘Please Maharaja, give a Srimad-Bhagavatam lecture,’ you say, ‘Give me a week to settle in.’
“Let cat out the front door. He walks along the top of the wall. Don’t shut the door on him. Let him wander as he likes. What about your own walk? No, there’s not enough time. We drive again to Carlow, where Curlilocks takes my denture and says things I can’t understand because of his Irish accent.
“Don’t be arty, be true. Let go and make something new and interesting.
“Performance Jitters
“Satsvarupa? Yo!
Where?
Over here, sir, I’m having a
three-day seminar, one meeting a day,
with my disciples.
Hmph!
You don’t like?
You don’t like?
I don’t like the look on your face.
Too fat, and too many chins.
Go report to the correction board.“As we ride out there I ask
him if he’s seriously considering
raising a family. Yes, but
for the time being,
they don’t. I won’t tell you here.“I take off my socks and
lie down in bed.
I don’t need to take
Valerian root every
night to sleep.“Just get comfortable.
I’ll be on the asana again
tomorrow, answering
as best I can.“Can you make it colorful,
intriguing? I wanted to but
maybe it’s the same thing.“I can’t change them,
can’t change their lives.
Do they love me?
Do I love them.“Pretty sure I’m going to stay here. Wait here through the year. Devotees from England want to know if they can schedule to see me a few days in June. Yes, I say, go ahead. I’ll be here. Don’t intend to travel. And when you come, I can see you somehow. I’ll take Somatriptin or DHE or whatever I need to get through.
“Yeah, pretty sure I’m going to stay here. But man proposes and God disposes. Look upon your master with love, will you? Pray he accepts you as a disciple. Hey, and I want disciples too! I want Barry and Michelle Wallace. I want that Indian girl who used to write me from Soho Street, London, and what about Jimmy Thompson? Oh, he and I are just friends. Okay, look up at that sky. It’s not going to happen just now, the end of the world or my own demise. That’s very strange. Chant Hare Krishna, and you’ll be all right.
“Hare Krishna. I would like to be fixed in Krishna consciousness. Do what Krishna wants me to do. Get it right, get it straight. All right, I believe in God, the Father Almighty. He has many expansions. These souls are His partial expansions. He Himself, in His original, is Govinda. Don’t think He’s a human. He’s humanlike, but the supreme human. Because Krishna has two hands and a head, some mudhas think He’s an ordinary human being. In Bhagavad-gita He says, ‘Avajananti mam mudhah’—fools think that He is one of them. They don’t know His supreme dominion as the Supreme Personality of Godhead.
“Less than two minutes. You wrote an exam with Krishna conscious answers and hope to get a Bhakti-sastri degree. It is required for a sannyasi. I was one of them. I did a thing for Srila Prabhupada, GBC secretary. He said, ‘You are not a good manager, but I keep you on the GBC because you do as I say.’ Please let me keep doing that.
“‘Sometimes I come across in your writings your feeling (sometimes) of almost guilt with the life of solitude which you’ve embraced. But your writings, your honesty at all times and your years of experience which you have put on the page are invaluable in the lives of so many. In the dark valley, we need so much help. If I can be so bold as to offer you encouragement in this regard, I do.’—Annette Murphy.”

Toronto Sankirtan Team, CA: Real mercy in seperation
Lord Rāmacandra showed His favor to His brothers by ordering Them to go out. Many of the Lord's devotees residing in Vṛndāvana have taken the vow not to leave Vṛndāvana to preach Kṛṣṇa consciousness. But the Lord says that Kṛṣṇa consciousness should be spread all over the world, in every village and every town. This is the open order of Lord Caitanya Mahāprabhu.
pṛthivīte āche yata nagarādi grāma
sarvatra pracāra haibe mora nāma
A pure devotee, therefore, must execute the order of the Lord and must not gratify his senses by remaining stagnant in one place, falsely proud, thinking that because he does not leave Vṛndāvana but chants in a solitary place he has become a great devotee. A devotee must carry out the order of the Supreme Personality of Godhead. Caitanya Mahāprabhu said, yāre dekha, tāre kaha 'kṛṣṇa'-upadeśa [Cc. Madhya 7.128]. Every devotee, therefore, should spread Kṛṣṇa consciousness by preaching, asking whomever he meets to accept the order of the Supreme Personality of Godhead. The Lord says, sarva-dharmān parityajya mām ekaḿ śaraṇaḿ vraja: [Bg. 18.66] "Abandon all varieties of religion and just surrender unto Me." This is the order of the Lord, who speaks as the supreme emperor. Everyone should be induced to accept this order, for this is victory (dig-vijaya). And it is the duty of the soldier, the devotee, to impress upon everyone this philosophy of life.• Email to a friend • •
Toronto Sankirtan Team, CA: Sankirtana Yuga
Among the four yugas — Satya, Tretā, Dvāpara and Kali — the Kali-yuga is the worst, but if the process of varṇāśrama-dharma is introduced, even in this age of Kali, the situation of Satya-yuga can be invoked. The Hare Kṛṣṇa movement, or Kṛṣṇa consciousness movement, is meant for this purpose.
kaler doṣa-nidhe rājann
asti hy eko mahān guṇaḥ
kīrtanād eva kṛṣṇasya
mukta-sańgaḥ paraḿ vrajet
"My dear King, although Kali-yuga is full of faults, there is still one good quality about this age: simply by chanting the Hare Kṛṣṇa mahā-mantra, one can become free from material bondage and be promoted to the transcendental kingdom." (Bhāg. 12.3.51) If people take to this sańkīrtana movement of chanting Hare Kṛṣṇa, Hare Rāma, they will certainly be freed from the contamination of Kali-yuga, and the people of this age will be happy, as people were in Satya-yuga, the golden age. Anyone, anywhere, can easily take to this Hare Kṛṣṇa movement; one need only chant the Hare Kṛṣṇa mahā-mantra, observe the rules and regulations, and stay free from the contamination of sinful life. Even if one is sinful and cannot give up sinful life immediately, if he chants the Hare Kṛṣṇa mahā-mantra with devotion and faith he will certainly be freed from all sinful activities, and his life will be successful. Paraḿ vijayate śrī-kṛṣṇa-sańkīrtanam. This is the blessing of Lord Rāmacandra, who has appeared in this age of Kali as Lord Gaurasundara.

Jour Deu
Port-Louis,Mauritius
We actually set foot from the Krishna Balaram temple at Bon Accueil quite early. 3:15a.m. was not a discouraging time for Guru Carana Padma, a mom and her two sons, Govinda, 18 and Govardhan, 11. Thierry was the fifth person and we grew from there. Within the hour our number reached thirty-five as volunteers, many of whom had blistered feet from yesterday, latched on along the way. I tell you frankly though, I had never heard so many dogs raise such a fuss. Not one of them joined our battalion as on the previous day when one mutt took to our pilgrim group for kilometre after kilometre.
The public was aware of our walking as it was broadcasted last night on MBC TV. I’m sure it was no plot other than Mother Nature’s but a tree had fallen and blockaded the road to part ours. We managed around it in a shaded area of argan trees lined along the way. They protected us from rain more than from the sun.
It was as much ecstasy. We conducted a march to the beat of our drum and the sound of Guru-astakam (Prayers to the Guru) singing in unison like the British troop whistling in The Bridge Over the River Kurai. They generously insisted to be its captain or general.
Gradually nature and some fields went behind us as city madness engulfed me. Hustle bustle diesel realities changed the atmosphere. Pedestrians started peeking out and moving to their destination. Tell them “comment sa va?” (How are you? In French) said one helpful devotee as a greeting. In Mauritius it’s Creole that they understand. The island had been occupied by various forms of militant take-over. First there were the Portuguese, then the Dutch (we passed by an old Dutch fort yesterday), then came the French and then a sweeping attack of the British.
Our finish point was at the touristy ocean harbour of Port-Louis. After a non-stop 24KM trek we stopped to a spontaneous indulgence in a circle leg massage, one for men and one for women.
We were done but we had fun with a final kirtan until the evening spun in and over two hundred chanters walked a 3KM kirtan procession in the dark once again, this time in Camp de Masque Pave. The planned program culminated at a kali temple where the goddess saw an additional three hundred people clap and sing to “Hare Krishna Hare Krishna Krishna Krishna Hare Hare Hare Rama Hare Rama Rama Rama Hare Hare.”

The Name of the Road
Phoenix, Mauritius
“What is the name of the road we walked on?” I asked.
“It doesn’t have a name (officially). Most people just
call it the coastal road or the royal road,” answered
Thierry and Sukadev, our driver back to Bon Accueil.
We had just completed a trekking success story. At least
for me, I never expected seventy three people to show up
at 4 a.m. for what might be perceived as a whimsical trek.
After all we are not raising any money here. Awareness,
yes. Since last night’s talk and kirtan people wanted to
be part of the action. I found it rather astounding that
such a small island with few residents would have a decent
size turn out.
We rendezvoused at Bel Air roundabout and began walking in
the dark when scarce was there a vehicle passing by in
this narrow two lane road crunched by sugarcane plants on
either side except at village sites. When headlights would
shine to one side of us it revealed a mass of silhouetted
people in robes scanning across slightly wind-tossed
twelve foot plants. It appeared rather mystical.
That’s what we were a mystical army. No police escorted
us. In Mauritius, it is a to do-it-yourself safety
program. There were plenty of women and children among us
and a mere torch (flashlight) bobbed up and down warning
oncoming traffic that we are here.
Practically our walking group chanted japa (meditation on
beads) all the way. Only at 8 a.m. when the sun’s presence
shone did we sing aloud our songs to Guru and to Krsna.
Drums and karatals (cymbals) set the beat and tempo for a
urging march. All the while Sukadev so expertly tended to
walkers who needed picking up from fatigue. Everyone
proved to be troupers of a glorious kind. I heard not a
single complaint. They were all smiles.
And smiles popped up under the lights of the temple in
Phoenix in the evening as well. Temple leader, Haridev
introduced me to yet another community on the island.
There, with the day’s closing, I spoke about the merits of
a more simple track to take in life and a less dependency
on technology.
“Use those legs. Give a car a break. Walk and chant. They
go so well together.” Such was my message. There was
pin-drop silence as the talk went on except for a baby who
seemed to make a vocal fuss every time I needed a sound on
cue.
What a great day in Mauritius!

LINDYTOWN, W.Va.This Land

Readers' Comments
Readers shared their thoughts on this article. To reach a lost American place, here just a moment ago, follow a thin country road as it unspools across an Appalachian valley’s grimy floor, past a coal operation or two, a church or two, a village called Twilight. Beware of the truck traffic. Watch out for that car-chasing dog.
After passing an abandoned union hall with its front door agape, look to the right for a solitary house, tidy, yellow and tucked into the stillness. This is nearly all that remains of a West Virginia community called Lindytown.
In the small living room, five generations of family portraits gaze upon Quinnie Richmond, 85, who has trouble summoning the memories, and her son, Roger, 62, who cannot forget them: the many children all about, enough to fill Mr. Cook’s school bus every morning; the Sunday services at the simple church; the white laundry strung on clotheslines; the echoing clatter of evening horseshoes; the sense of home.
But the coal that helped to create Lindytown also destroyed it. Here was the church; here was its steeple; now it’s all gone, along with its people. Gone, too, are the surrounding mountaintops. To mine the soft rock that we burn to help power our light bulbs, our laptops, our way of life, heavy equipment has stripped away the trees, the soil, the rock — what coal companies call the “overburden.”
Now, the faint, mechanical beeps and grinds from above are all that disturb the Lindytown quiet, save for the occasional, seam-splintering blast.
A couple of years ago, a subsidiary of Massey Energy, which owns a sprawling mine operation behind and above the Richmond home, bought up Lindytown. Many of its residents signed Massey-proffered documents in which they also agreed not to sue, testify against, seek inspection of or “make adverse comment” about coal-mining operations in the vicinity.
You might say that both parties were motivated. Massey preferred not to have people living so close to its mountaintop mining operations. And the residents, some with area roots deep into the 19th century, preferred not to live amid a dusty industrial operation that was altering the natural world about them. So the Greens sold, as did the Cooks, and the Workmans, and the Webbs ...
But Quinnie Richmond’s husband, Lawrence — who died a few months ago, at 85 — feared that leaving the home they built in 1947 might upset his wife, who has Alzheimer’s. He and his son Roger, a retired coal miner who lives next door, chose instead to sign easements granting the coal company certain rights over their properties. In exchange for also agreeing not to make adverse comment, the two Richmond households received $25,000 each, Roger Richmond recalls.
“Hush money,” he says, half-smiling.
As Mr. Richmond speaks, the mining on the mountain behind him continues to transform, if not erase, the woodsy stretches he explored in boyhood. It has also exposed a massive rock that almost seems to be teetering above the Richmond home. Some days, an anxious Mrs. Richmond will check on the rock from her small kitchen window, step away, then come back to check again.
And again.
A Dictator of Destiny
Here in Boone County, coal rules. The rich seams of bituminous black have dictated the region’s destiny for many generations: through the advent of railroads; the company-controlled coal camps; the bloody mine wars; the increased use of mechanization and surface mining, including mountaintop removal; the related decrease in jobs.
The county has the largest surface-mining project (the Massey operation) in the state and the largest number of coal-company employees (more than 3,600). Every year it receives several million dollars in tax severance payments from the coal industry, and every June it plays host to the West Virginia Coal Festival, with fireworks, a beauty pageant, a memorial service for dead miners, and displays of the latest mining equipment. Without coal, says Larry V. Lodato, the director of the county’s Community and Economic Development Corporation, “You might as well turn out the lights and leave.”

ISKCON Toronto, Canada: A Wonderfully Positive Review of Our Temple from the Blog World!
Our community is more than accustomed to our larger-than-life festivals that bring so much colour and excitement. Whether a dramatic Gaura Purnima festival or celebrating New Year's in style - you can always expect an enlivening experience.
However, we rarely get a chance to hear from those who arrive at one of our grand festivals for the FIRST time. Below is an excerpt of a blog post written by someone who came for our Holi/Gaura Purnima festivities for the first time:
Unlike other Hindu festivals we’ve been to recently in Toronto, the Hare Krishna’s festival was more a group affair than a place for individual acts of worship. The congregation of at least two hundred sang, clapped and danced together. They were livelier and noisier.

Japa Group: Surrender With Faith
Hare Krsna dear devotees, it's always nice when we have tools that motivate us in our spritual life and that make us more willing to serve, chant and dedicate our time to the Lord. So many things happen in this world and day by day we can realize we are nothing without the Lord and His holy names. When we face difficulties, hard times and hardships in our lives it's actually the Lord's mercy so we can get advanced and surrender to Him more - we develop strong faith and we become more in love with our goals....eternal love to Krsna. Below is a beautiful prayer Srila Prabhupada made that serve to boost our enthusiasm.
I have no devotion, nor do I have any knowledge, but I have strong faith in the holy name of Krishna. I have been designated as Bhaktivedanta, and now, if you like, you can fulfill the real purport of Bhaktivedanta.
Signed - the most unfortunate, insignificant beggar
A.C. Bhaktivedanta Swami
your servant,
