ISKCON Melbourne, AU: Today's Darsana

Today we celebrate the glorious appearance day of Lord Ramacandra, born to King Dasaratha and Kausalya, the king's eldest queen.

ramaC
Lord Ramacandra appeared in Treta Yuga in the kingdom of Ayodhya and is remembered as the slayer of the demon Ravana, then the King of Lanka.

Lord Rama is one of the most popular incarnations of Lord Krishna and is righteousness personified. He embodies the ideal son, king, husband, brother, friend and altogether the perfect human being, even though He is God Himself.

Lord Rama and His illustrious entourage are gracing us with Their most celebrated

We have

H.H. Satsvarupa das Goswami (Ret.): 278—Poem for April 12

www.sdgonline.org. SDGonline Daily updates

4:24 A.M.

A Writer of Pieces

New format—I will begin with a poem written on the day of its printing. Then I will print random excerpts of books I have printed over the last 30 years. I hope this variety will be pleasing.

Poem for April 12

I finished all my sixteen
rounds early today and did
gayatri, and I’m ready for a poem
to Krishna, facing Him whose
greatest virtue is His inclination
towards His devotees.

When He disappeared, Arjuna lost
all his powers like borrowed plumes
but then remembered the instructions
his friend gave him at Kuruksetra
and retained all composure
because remembering Him is as
good as having Him. And
Arjuna and Yudhisthira and Kunti
all thought of returning back to

Godhead. Arjuna’s remembrance was
important to hear and amazing. Even I
changed in my mind on hearing it.
Lord Caitanya recommended
continuous hearing of the
holy names as the
way to clean the mind
of all dirt and see
the pure soul as servant of God.

We will go on doing this
between times when we
fail to remember, and it
will revive our position.

This morning is early,
sleepy, and the poem is
frank about the effects
of hearing Narayana read
the Srimad-Bhagavatam at
lunchtime, and it
impressed you beyond
the normal consciousness
so you share with
Arjuna the remembrance
of the words of Krishna,
and it puts you in
an altered state
feeling fearless
and restored in
your strength despite
the Lord’s apparent
disappearance.

H.H. Satsvarupa das Goswami (Ret.): OLD FRIENDS

www.sdgonline.org. SDGonline Daily updates

From Life With the Perfect Master

“At 7:00 P.M. Prabhupada allowed everyone to enter, and the large room filled up with about a hundred people, including about thirty of his disciples. A small light was on Prabhupada’s desk, and several naked light bulbs were fixed on the wall. The total lighting effect, although dim, was exciting. We all took part in an enthusiastic kirtana, singing and dancing before Srila Prabhupada, who played his shining karatalas and sang along with the chorus, completely absorbed in chanting with the devotees. Someone had given him a woolen hat, which fit under his chin, and he wore his heaviest sweater as well as a chadar.

“After the kirtana he spoke about the Six Gosvamis of Vrndavana and how they practiced tapasya.

“‘The tapasvis in Vrndavana,’ said Prabhupada, ‘go naked even in the cold. They are determined not to come back again to material life. Of course, nowadays we cannot execute such severe austerities, but even if we try to live in comfort, we will suffer. And if we think, “All right, it is miserable, but let me enjoy,” still we have to die. So our penance is to voluntarily take pains for Krishna. He comes to save the fallen souls. He comes Himself, He sends His devotees, He leaves His books. If we help a little, He will be pleased, that is our dependence.’

“After his lecture, an American devotee visiting Vrndavana asked Prabhupada, ‘What is the difference between Goloka and Vrndavana?’

“‘None,’ replied Prabhupada, ‘but your mind is in America. Fix your mind at the lotus feet of Krishna and you’re always in Vrndavana. Krishna is everywhere.’

“I woke to the sound of Prabhupada dictating Caitanya-caritamrta. It was only 2:00 A.M., and so I stayed huddled in my sleeping bag. But it was the most wonderful, welcome sound. It meant the whole world was being taken care of.

“I dozed off, waking again at 3:00 A.M. Now Prabhupada’s room was quiet, and I knew he must be chanting on his beads. The outhouse and the bucket for bathing were in the backyard, and as I quietly left the building I could hear peacocks calling loudly to one another from the trees. In the distance dogs were barking, and the radio played a Hindi song. The pinching cold made me remember Srila Prabhupada’s tapasya lecture, but I enjoyed it all, looking up at the clear, starry sky and thinking, ‘I am in Vrndavana with Prabhupada.’ As quickly as possible, I returned to my room and began silently fingering my beads and mouthing the words: ‘Hare Krishna, Hare Krishna, Krishna Krishna, Hare Hare/ Hare Rama, Hare Rama, Rama Rama, Hare Hare.’

“About 4:00 A.M., Prabhupada rang his bell. Entering with joy, I made my obeisances before Srila Prabhupada, who sat behind his dim desk light looking as solid as the Himalayas.

“‘Jaya, Srila Prabhupada!’”

From Journal and Poems, Book I (January–June 1985)

March 19

“In a hallway of our Potomac temple, there’s a picture which might be easily misunderstood by a guest. It shows a solitary peaceful sage embracing a fawn. A person who has some initial attraction to spiritual life might think, ‘Here is an ideal setting and relationship: the saintly ascetic communing with the innocent creature of nature.’ The setting is certainly in the mode of goodness—the sage’s simple straw cottage stands in the forest on the bank of a clean, flowing river. The sage’s embracing the baby deer may invoke God-conscious feelings of unity with all creatures, as exemplified by St. Francis. Or it may call to mind the nonviolence of Lord Buddha or the yogi’s equality of vision as described by Lord Krishna in the Bhagavad-gita.

“But what the unfamiliar guest to the temple would not know is that this painting actually depicts Maharaja Bharata’s fall from spiritual life. Maharaja Bharata had given up all worldly attachments at a young age and had almost achieved perfection by meditating in solitude on Krishna. But he became overly attached to a fawn whom he would feed and protect. Gradually Maharaja Bharata became so distracted by the deer that he gave up meditating on the Supreme Lord. He had become an infatuated fool. When the fawn disappeared one day, Maharaja Bharata was driven mad by the loss. Seeing the footprints of his precious deer, he exclaimed, ‘By these footprints this land has become a proper place for brahmanas who desire heavenly planets or liberation to execute sacrifices to the demigods.’ Unfortunately, at the time of his death Maharaja Bharata was absorbed in thoughts of the deer and so had to take his next birth as a stag.

“Although at first glance the painting of Maharaja Bharata seems to depict a praiseworthy quality in the sage, it must be studied with discrimination. Similarly, as we attempt to see God in all things, we must also use discrimination.

“According to Lord Caitanya’s philosophy of acintya-bheda-abheda-tattva, by which we see God as inconceivably, simultaneously one and different from all things, every spirit soul is Krishna. And yet Krishna in His original form is different from the individual soul. In a similar way, the material nature is nothing but Krishna, being His energy. But at the same time it is different from Him. To see the divine unity of all things, we have to concentrate on Krishna as the Cause of All Causes and see all things in relation to Him.
“According to acintya-bheda-abheda, different living beings must be understood in different ways. Animals such as the deer or the cow are especially dear to Krishna and should always be protected. And no creature should be killed unnecessarily. All living entities are eternal spirit souls, and in each material body dwells Lord Vishnu as Paramatma. Therefore, animals should be treated favorably, their lives spared. And if possible, they should be fed the Lord’s prasadam. But acintya-bheda-abheda-tattva does not mean that we should consider the animals—or even human beings—as equal in all respects to God. Nor should we be like Maharaja Bharata and become so distracted by our meditation on nature that we forget Krishna.”

From Vrndavana Writing (1993)

“By Your mercy I will be able to write love songs under the direction of Tulasi-devi. By Your mercy, I can write for the devotees I serve. By Your mercy, this writing could become my bhajana, my way of expressing the love in my heart.

“Krishna, please be kind and grant me entry into the moonbeam-filled forest where You meet with Radha at Govinda-sthala. Please be kind; please be kind. Let me read and love the poems of the rupanuga poets. I want to be able to write like them in the American idiom. Unfortunately, I am still an American. When I become something else, then I can write differently.

“I write because it is good to sweat from all my pores from head to toe. Vrndavana, please let me describe your trees. Please teach me the silent secrets which aren’t contacted just by hearing what blares out of the megaphones. Please teach me to love Vraja dhama and learn what the rasika persons know. Can writing help?

Prabhodananda Sarasvati Thakura writes,

“‘Vrndavana is filled with countless supremely beautiful golden trees as splendid as numberless millions of blazing suns. When these trees appear before the heart, they shower a cooling rain of transcendental bliss that immediately extinguishes the burning sufferings of repeated birth and death. They grant the rarest and most-difficult-to-obtain spiritual treasure.’ (V.M., Sataka 2.5)

“4:25 P.M.

“I was just reading about guru-tattva in Caitanya-caritamrta. There are different kinds of initiating and instructing spiritual masters. The Supreme Lord as Supersoul is also an instructing spiritual master, but that’s not done independently of other gurus, the Vaisnavas. It was interesting to see the context in which Srila Prabhupada quoted the English maxim, ‘God helps those who help themselves.’ He said many persons have received instructions from Krishna in the heart. Lord Brahma is one. Bilvamangala Thakura recognizes Somagiri as his diksa-guru and Cintamani as his instructing guru. He also recognizes Sri Krishna as his instructing guru. In the case of Lila-sukha, he makes it clear that he is not thinking of four-armed Paramatma but of the peacock-feathered Youth of Vraja who sometimes brought milk for His devotee Bilvamangala.

“So we shouldn’t deny that the Supreme Lord is a prime spiritual master. If we ‘help oursleves’ by consulting and serving the Vaisnavas, and by sometimes going alone to carry out our Gurudeva’s order (as our Srila Prabhupada did), then both Gurudeva (even after his disappearance) and the Supreme Lord will help.

“The ferns and creepers move in the hot breeze. They are not ordinary. I don’t know what that means, but I accept that I am in a much different place than in Wicklow, Ireland.

“Two boys chase a donkey. The donkey’s hooves clap-clap across the earth.  The boys’ feet slap-slap behind him. A calf on the same path stands watching and grunting an observer’s m-o-o-o.

“In Ireland, I could gain a sense of the divine in the grass, the hills and the sky, but it took more work on my part to impose Krishna on the meditation. Here Krishna is automatically present even if I forget Him.

“The early afternoon arati bell is ringing at Krishna-Balarama mandira. Each peal hangs in the air. I always associate the sound of that bell with the last months of Srila Prabhupada’s presence in 1977. The bell was heavy then with the feelings of his impending departure.

“Rasa doesn’t exactly mean ‘juice,’ but it is the ‘juice’ drunk by Krishna and the gopis. They taste prema in all they do or speak or think. Krishna, love for Radha . . .

“Here I am with my ordinary body, my body tormented by the flies, sweating, trying to keep the ink flowing evenly onto the page. I have to try again and again to get past this awareness and let all the external details of my existence fall away. What is at the center? A clearing for the rasa dance.  The Yamuna kept the rough sands in ‘her womb,’ and spread only pure white sand on her bank for the pleasure pastimes of Krishna. The moon spread its coloring white effulgence everywhere. Krishna enjoyed with the gopis. Raghunatha dasa Gosvami gives a sustained vision of himself as tulasi-manjari assisting Radhika, but then it fades away. My ‘vision’ is a brief focus on something transcendental that I read or experienced. I write it down, even while the external world hits me straight on. (As I write this, those bold, gray-white fluffy birds are chirping—a harsh sound—very nearby. There are two of them on the bamboo poles up here, and with them is a dove or a pigeon with a softer coo-coo-coo. Not exactly a distraction.)

“Radha is sometimes in mana and doesn’t allow Krishna into the kunja. She tells the sakhis that He is both black in body and within—send Him away.  Krishna bows at Her feet, but to no avail. He leaves, but this is just further impetus to another meeting.

“In Vrndavana you can float from the remembrance of lila to the sight of the pigeon, and it’s not such a violent swing from concentration to distraction. Gently you return . . . Prabhupada said to always remember Krishna by chanting on beads or reading books. If you get hungry, take prasadam. If you get tired, take a ‘snap’ to refresh yourself. Then again, always remember Krishna.

‘I didn’t bring my books up to the roof, and I don’t want to stop writing to go get them. In the Caitanya-caritamrta, Adi-lila, Krishna dasa Kaviraja discussed gurus. Now he is discussing the Vaisnavas. We need their mercy, both the great ones and those very important souls  with whom we live nowadays. I saw many of  them last night. I shouldn’t think of only Srila Narayana Maharaja, but I have to beg for the mercy of all the Vaisnavas—my Godbrothers and Godsisters and nieces and nephews and cousins. We are all one big joined family. All the Vaisnavas are here in Vrndavana. We will serve together.”

Krishna-kripa das, Mayapura: Travel Journal#7.2-3: Gainesville, Tallahassee, and the Ocala Rainbow Gathering

Dairy of a Traveling Sadhaka, Vol. 7, Nos. 2-3

By Krishna-kripa das

(January 2011, part two / February 2011, part one)

Gainesville, Tallahassee, and Ocala Rainbow Gathering

Where I Went and What I Did

From mid January to mid February 2011, I was mostly in Gainesville except a week I spent in Tallahassee and a day I spent in Ocala National Forest at a Rainbow Gathering. Unfortunately, I lost the notes on the lectures I heard from the middle of January to the middle of February. My new ASUS Netbook was not hibernating very fast, and I was afraid the stewardess would yell at me for continuing to use my computer during takeoff, so I pushed the on/off button, and the file system on the hard disk got messed up. Brahmatirtha Prabhu had previously advised me to save my work on Google Documents, as I am always traveling, and if I had followed that advice, I would not have lost anything. I had a few interesting experiences in later January and early February. Most exciting for me was a group of twenty or so devotees, mostly associated with Krishna House, went to the Ocala Regional Rainbow Gathering and chanting for hours and distributed lots of prasadam. One student wrote an article about our programs at Krishna House and got an amazing grade. I investigated a meeting of the Christian/Skeptics Club at Florida State University and was reminded again about limitations of human intellect to understand the Absolute Truth.

Chanting and Prasadam at the Ocala Regional Rainbow Gathering

Devotees have been sharing their chanting and spiritual food at Rainbow Gatherings since the 1970s. The national ones would get 25,000 people, but the smaller regional ones like the one in Ocala National Forest in mid February just get several hundreds. The people are not so much into peace and love as in the 1970s, and for some it is just an opportunity to take intoxication and spend time with friends in a natural setting. Still many of the attendees like the devotees, their music, and their spiritual food, especially their halava. People were very appreciative. Some sang and danced with us. Mother Caitanya distributed lots of literature. Tulasirani dd taught a young lady how to chant Hare Krishna on beads. Special thanks to Andrea Perez Del Solar and Damodar Prasad, whose pictures posted on Facebook illustrate this account.

We began with a rousing Nrsimha-kirtana in the van by the most crowded band I have ever been in!

We started by chanting and distributing prasadam in the parking lot, until we figured out where the path was.

We did not know the best way to get to the trading circle, often the best place to distribute prasadam during the day. Some people showed us a route through a swamp, and almost everyone’s shoes and socks got wet except mine. I felt a little bad for them. I suggested they hang the socks in the sun to dry instead of the shade.

This sign shows a little of the love for nature that is still present at the gatherings, despite changing times.

After carrying our buckets of food what always seems a longer distance than it really is we reached the trade circle, which is usually more of a line than a circle anyway.

I suggested we chant all the way through it and set up on the far side rather than in the middle, so as not to dominate the event and draw potential criticism. After going most of the way through, we saw a beautiful sight:

There was a string suspended between trees and two tapestries, one depicting Sri Sri Gaura Nitai (right) and the other Lord Vishnu (left). After the long journey, carrying heavy buckets through the swamp and getting soaked, upon seeing Gaura Nitai we felt relieved. We had found our home.

Garuda Prabhu from Tallahassee, seen here chanting Hare Krishna and playing the guitar, has been attending these events for over twenty years. He had created a little Krishna corner there, and we put our blankets down and chanted Hare Krishna, as the tapestry of Lord Caitanya and Lord Nityananda blew in the wind above and behind us.

Some people would sit with us while taking prasadam and others would play their own instruments.

In front of the chanting party, along the path, we set up our spaghetti (two buckets), chili (one bucket), and halava (four buckets) for distribution. After reheating the food all morning and hiking into the woods, chanting most of the way, I was very happy to get a large plate of spiritual food myself.

Sometimes I would stand on the path in front of our chanting party, singing and dancing with a scoop of a halava in hand, ready to put it on whatever plate was presented, often just an open, not so clean, palm.

We must have chanted and distributed prasadam for three or four hours until it began to get dark, and we headed to the main circle for the evening meal. After the two or three hundred people had all chanted “OM” and people encircling the bonfire put out their plates for the evening communal meal, we sang as a couple devotees distributed the last two buckets of halava. We could have used more spaghetti.

As we were leaving we heard some people we knew got their car stuck in the soft sand, and the devotees ended their Ocala National Forest adventures by helping push the car out.

Many of the devotees came to the Rainbow Gathering for the first time, and everyone liked that spiritual fieldtrip.

Distributing prasadam and chanting for appreciative people is a universally nice experience. I was very happy that the devotees were glad that they went, and I hope we can get together and share prasadam and kirtana again soon.

Student Writes Excellent Paper About Krishna House

Danielle Arnold wrote me via email, “I am a public relations students at the University of Florida. I am currently enrolled in a class called reporting and I have to write stories each week.” She went on explaining that she wanted to write about how Krishna House classes can help students reduce stress.

I talked about our meditation class, and Sagar told her about our yoga class. My favorite part of her article was an interview with Estefania Perez del Solar, a UF physics senior, who began volunteering at the Krishna House after seeing the Krishnas on campus. Estefania said, “It is really beautiful how I’ve seen myself and other people transform to be more respectful and peaceful. It is nice to share that with other people.”

I told Danielle that often news articles about the Hare Krishna’s have errors because a lot of the material is new to the authors, and so I offered to read her article over before she submitted it. She agreed, and I suggested some changes and corrected typos. Later she wrote, “I wanted to say thank you so much for helping me with my article for reporting. I am proud to say that I earned a 100% on my paper, which is UNHEARD OF!!! I couldn't have done with without you!”

I think it goes to show that when people are sincere and they cooperate with the devotees, the Lord blesses them, even by material calculation. At least that is what appears in this case. I hope Danielle goes on to write many more excellent articles about Krishna.

Skeptics and Christians Meeting at Florida State University

I had talked to a friendly Christian girl who visited my book table and who invited me to the Skeptics/Christians Club meeting at Florida State University. It sounded like a group of people discussing important philosophical and theistic issues from different perspectives, so I developed a desire to go. Independently, over the course of a couple First Fridays, Dina Bandhu Prabhu talked about Krishna philosophy with Brad Kimmons, the Christian leader of that club (there is also a skeptic leader), who also invited him to go. Unfortunately the night I was in town, Dina Bandhu had to work, so I went alone.

Here are some points from the discussion that were striking in some way, either insightful, humorous, or perhaps even ridiculous:

Student A: I always hated epistemology classes because they would always end with, “''But do you know that you know?”
Scott: Cartesian certainty does exist no matter what anyone does or says to prove it doesn't.
Student B: The postmodern people hypothesize that thought could exist without a thinker.
My comment: From the theistic prospective, at least there is God, who is the source of all thoughts [so there is a thinker].
Student C: Philosophy is to use the most complicated means to get to the most obvious explanations.
Student C: It one point, I realized I was using the dark side of my self to entertain my self.
Student D: This [referring to a Biblical passage wherein Jesus talks with the descendents of Abraham] to me shows the difference between Judiasm and Christianity. Because the Jews see the authority of God just comes through an ancestral lineage and does not come directly, and thus when Jesus spoke as if God was presently communicating with him, the Jews considered Jesus was blasphemous.
Scott: In mathematics an “if-then” statement is considered to be “true,” if the antecedent is false, then the statement as a whole is considered “true.”
Mary: Satan occurs in the Bible encouraging Eve to take the fruit, then with God’s permission, taking everything away from Job [to show that he would remain faithful to God in the face of material deprivation], and offering Jesus the whole material world for his enjoyment.
Student F: It is interesting that although Abraham is put on a very high pedestal, in our culture if someone claimed God told him to sacrifice his son, we would think he was crazy.
Mary: Of course, the angel did not let him perform the sacrifice of his son, and there was no future case of God every promoting or allowing child sacrifice. Also previously, God told Abraham to move his entire family to a distant land all of a sudden, and he did that. Also he had a child when he and his wife were way too old, so old, his wife laughed, and the child was named Isaac, which means “laughter.” So he had a history of doing things most people would not do in order to please the Lord.

Brad played a tape of Christian preacher Tim Keller on the problem of evil. Here are some notes:
One way one should not face evil and suffering in this world is to back away from God. It does not help you understand suffering.
Martin Luther King said, “If there is no higher divine law, then how can we know if a human law is wrong.” Sartre said, “If there is no God, there is no a priori good.”
If you don't believe in God, there is just as much as suffering, and in fact there is more, because then there would be no morality, and people would cause even more mischief.
Peter gives three ways to deal with suffering, “You have to look back to something, look ahead to something, and into look something.”
Peter uses an analogy of a fire that purifies metals to harden them.
God promises in Isaiah when you are thrown in the fiery furnace of affliction, you will not be burned.
Keller claims that as Jesus, God experienced more suffering that anyone else, and that his proof he is not indifferent to our suffering and not inattentive to us.
Thus Keller argues one should look back to Jesus's suffering he was willing to do, and look forward to one's own immortality,
He further states that at the time of his crucifixion, Jesus’s only hope that he did not already possess in the kingdom of God, was that others would benefit spiritually by his suffering, and that helped him to go through the suffering.

I commented that Jesus’s going through that experience of suffering to help others is good example, and Srila Prabhupada would often use it to illustrate the compassion of a Vaishnava [God’s devotee].

I also mentioned that to say that God has to come and experience our suffering in order to empathize with us is putting a limit on God. He could just as easily experience it without having to go through it Himself.

Brenden replied, “I think that to say God is unlimited is also limiting Him in a sense.” [I laughed at that, as in my fifty-one years of hearing metaphysical conversations in this body, I had never heard that one before! In retrospect, it is interesting that Srila Prabhupada says that Krishna has both limited potencies (His expansions as individual souls) as well as unlimited potencies (His personal expansions) and thus having both limited and unlimited potencies, He can be considered omnipotent.]

Many of the people, both Christians and skeptics, as far as I could see, were not satisfied with Tim Keller’s explanation of the problem of evil. I thought the best part was his glorification of Christ’s compassion, but otherwise it did not completely satisfy me. Hare Krishnas would have mentioned other points such as how past sinful reactions play a part in the sufferings of men, how, as spiritual beings, we have nothing to do with the sufferings of the body, and also how by meditation on the Lord, one can forget the sufferings of the body. Perhaps, had it not been 10 p.m. and had the meeting not already gone on for two and a half hours, I might have made all those points [although I mentioned one or two to some of the people as we were leaving].

It was an interesting experience attending the meeting and hearing the views of the different people who were trying to understand life’s meaning. Some people were appreciative of my statements from a Hare Krishna viewpoint, and some suggested it would be good to include theistic perspectives from the east. I may attend again when I return to Tallahassee in the fall.

“Dry arguments are inconclusive. A great personality whose opinion does not differ from others is not considered a great sage. Simply by studying the Vedas, which are variegated, one cannot come to the right path by which religious principles are understood. The solid truth of religious principles is hidden in the heart of an unadulterated, self-realized person. Consequently, as the sastras [scriptures] confirm, one should accept whatever progressive path the mahajanas [great spiritual authorities] advocate.” (King Yudhisthira quoted in Mahabharata, Vana-parva 313.117)

Devadeva Mirel, Alachua, USA: Kitchen Remodel Sticker Shock

Anyone who’s set out to design their dream kitchen knows how easily dreams are dashed.

We begin with our list of wants, prioritizing into categories of “must haves,” “would be nices,” and “longshots.” The “must haves” category is always the longest since you haven’t actually priced anything out at this point. Big sink, granite counter tops, tile backsplash. Maybe you could afford everything if all those greedy contractors could see it your way and work for free. I mean, who do they think they are with their hourly fees? Specialized tradesman? I mean, I could do this work myself for nothing. If I knew how to do it.

Of course you had no idea how much that Sub-Zero refrigerator was going to cost because there is not a price for it listed anywhere online. And who knew it was even legal to charge that much for a refrigerator. The freezer? Oh, you want that too? That’s a separate price. Appliances are definitely a case of if you have to ask, you can’t afford it.

greg henry's amazing kitchen. think you can get this on a $30,000 budget? think again!

Stacked cabinets seemed within your price range when you were thinking through your budget based on prices per linear foot but the reality is cabinets are not priced that way. It’s not your fault. The cabinet salesman led you to believe you could afford the cabinets of your dreams. But now could you please pick your jaw up off the showroom floor before you tip off the other potential customers that we are running a bait and switch?

To avoid sticker shock, let me fill you in on the true cost standing between you and your dreams.

1) Cabinets: This is often the biggest expense in any kitchen. Your cabinet price can differ dramatically based on materials. When pricing cabinets, know what type of construction you want. If the initial quote is too high, try running it again with a less expensive door style.

Boxes: Cabinets constructed of MDF or furniture grade particle board are usually priced less than plywood or solid wood construction.

Doors: Lots of variety in pricing due to door choice. Doors are usually priced lower when not constructed of solid wood but rather have wood veneers. Species of wood will also influence price. Domestic woods are generally more affordable, with oak and maple standard and cherry, alder and walnut pricier, with the exception of pricier rift sawn oak.

Door style contributes heavily to the price of cabinetry. Often, the more detailed and more popular doors are priced higher. Doors with beaded detailing are usually more expensive than simple Shaker construction. Due to construction time, inset doors are approximately 20% more than full or partial overlay. Since partial overlay has waned in popularity, it is often the best bargain.

Door finishes can be stained or painted, with a 20% upcharge for painting. Glazes on stained or painted finishes also cost more due to application. To get the look of a pricier wood, such as walnut, consider a walnut stain on select quality oak or grainy maple.

Glass fronts is an adorable detail that will drive your quote up quickly because the inside of the cabinet box needs to be finished to match the outside. This, apparently, is expensive.

2) Countertops: These days, stone countertops are pretty much expected when remodeling. But that doesn’t mean there aren’t other, more affordable options for you. However, if you have your heart set on stone, know that there is a huge range of options. While exotic granites may hurt your budget, stones such as uba tuba, luna pearl and giallo ornamental are budget friendly counter materials with a neutral palette.

3) Tile: While $10 sq/ft for tile may not seem like a terrible expense, remember that the cost of installation is not cheap. Tile setting requires a lot of labor and, in most instances, costs the same whether you are installing $2 sq/ft tile or $30 sq/ft tile. If you need to reign in the expenses, forgoing the Walker Zanger or Ann Sacks tile  for some American Olean or Brio mosaics will definitely save you a wad.

4) Appliances: Ask yourself whether or not your really need that pro-style range. But if you don’t, take your budget down a few BTU’s with a high performing mid-priced range. If you have your heart set on a suite of high end appliances, visit an appliance store and ask for package pricing. Be prepared to switch brands to take advantage of promotions, such as a free range hood–something that may save you a few grand.

5) Flooring: We’ve already covered tile. No matter what the material is, you still have to shell it out on the install. Wood floors are gaining popularity in the kitchen but their pricing varies greatly. Sand and finish floor material is a great bargain, especially if you have a local mill nearby to purchase from directly. Shop around for an installer with fair prices and good references. Pre-finished wood floor is easy and cheaper to install. Lumber Liquidators has prices to beat even the big box stores. Like cabinets, exotics and higher grade domestics will cost premium prices. Marmoleum, the evolved offspring of linoleum, is a wonderfully green product made from sawdust and linseed oil. It is soft underfoot and is available in a variety of colors. However, even though it is associated with linoleum, this is not a cheap product.

6) Faucets & Sinks: Just because a faucet is expensive does not mean it is better. Look at construction as well as styling, shop around online and hunt down the faucet that won’t break your budget. Avoid faucets with plastic parts and shoddy finishes by sticking to brands clearly stating the use of ceramic discs. Chrome faucets have the most durable finishes and are usually the least expensive. Want an ultra low lead faucet? Be prepared to spend more money.

Stainless steel sinks are a great buy but can be quite expensive for trendier styles such as zero radius and farmhouse apron front. The lower the gauge, the heavier the materials. Sinks are a good place to cost engineer because there is so much variety on sale. However, if you are going to put the sink through heavy use and have it undermounted with stone countertops, do it right the first time.

7) Lighting: There are two expenses to consider here–the cost of wiring and the cost of the fixture. Know that can lights are cheap per unit but all that wiring is going to cost you a lot. Since they are essentially spotlights, you will need many spaced every 3-4 feet to avoid shadows. Depending on the size of your kitchen, this could amount to a big expense. Fixtures, like sinks, come in a wide range of prices. However, it may be harder to find the style you want in your price range, especially since pendant lights are often installed in groups of 3, quickly multiplying the expense.

8) The Work: It ain’t going to come cheap. The workers are real people doing a real job. They have skills that you don’t and they are going to charge you for it. The more you plan to move stuff around—electrical, plumbing, gas lines–the more time they have to spend doing their job. Avoid chit chat, even if they are super friendly. Your paying for it!

No matter how you figure it, a remodel is a big expense. Choose your materials wisely. Keep a spreadsheet listing the costs. Shop around for sales and do try to haggle the price down if shopping at appliance or tile shops. I know that at the start of a remodel you are filled with lots of fantasies and when the quotes start coming along reality hits like a wet blanket. Don’t get discouraged. Your dream kitchen is within your reach. Just adjust the dream!

Mukunda Charan das, SA: The Catur-vyuha and the Purusa-avataras

The Lord’s first expansion is Lord Balarama, and Lord Balarama expands into the Catur-vyuha.  The first Catur-vyuha, Their expansions and the vilasa (pastime) incarnations of the Lord are categorized as tad-ekatma forms of the Lord.  Tad-ekatma forms resemble the svayam-rupa form - with differences.

The Catur-vyuha are categorized as svamsa (sva means ‘own’; and amsa means ‘part’)  or expansions of the Lord.  The Lord’s prabhava expansions divide into vibhava expanions – Vasudeva, Sankarsan, Pradyumna and Aniruddha.  This first Catur-vyuha expands into the 24 vaibhava-vilasa forms of Vishnu, which preside over the Vaikuntha planets [CC M 20.191].  Catur means ‘four’, and vyuha means ‘guard’ or ‘arms’. The word Catur-vyuha means the incarnations of the Lord who have four arms and guard the four directions.

Lord Narayana expands from Sankarsana.  The second Catur-vyuha – Vasudeva, Sankarsana, Pradyumna and Aniruddha –  expands from Narayana.  The purusa-avataras expand from the Sankarsana of the second Catur-vyuha.  There are thus two divisions of avataras in the svamsa category: those coming from Sankarsana ie. the purusa-avataras and the lila-avataras.

Ananda Subramanian, Iowa, USA: God’s body NEVER gets old, diseased or dies at any time in the past present or future

God’s body NEVER gets old, diseased or dies at any time in the past present or future. Whoever claims to be God but gets old, and diseased and eventually dies is not God but cheater.

There is a grave misconception among people, mostly among people following Hindu dharma, that God incarnates in flesh and blood and walk among us like a mortal. They even cite examples such as Lord Ram and Krishna to support their case. Such a thought that God comes down as a human being in flesh and blood is offensive and blasphemous. It also exposes the deep ignorance of common man, especially Hindus, on the understanding of the nature of God.

Let us make one point very clear – there is absolutely no scriptural (Vedic) evidence to prove that God descends to earth in flesh and blood. It is also wrong to assume that the so called flesh & blood incarnated God realizes himself as God by way of yoga and meditation. God is always God in the past, present and future and never “practices” yoga or meditation to realize himself as God. Such childish and juvenile understanding is anything but a display of deep seated ignorance of the true glory and greatness of God. Therefore any individual who claims to be God but at the same time possess a “human” body with flesh and blood cannot be considered God. These so called “Gods” are in fact subjected to mundane laws of old age, disease and death at all times. God is above the rules and laws of this material world of old age, disease and death at all times. In other words, God never gets old or diseased or dies at any point in time. If an individual claims to be God but undergoes these three changes of old age, disease and death, then, this individual is not God but a common mortal just like any of us. Sure…he may possess some mystic power but in no way can an individual within the laws of old age, disease and death be considered God.

God’s body and form although appearing as “human” is NOT “human”. God’s body is not made of DNA or RNA or RBC or WBC like the rest of us. The scriptures inform us that
God’s body is “nirguna”-devoid of material qualities of old age, disease and death. God’s body is transcendental full of spiritual qualities. In Sanskrit transcendental body is called SAT CHIT and ANANDA. It means God’s body is ETERNAL (sat), FULL OF KNOWLEDGE OMNISCIENT (chit) and BLISSFUL (ananda). Such a “transcendental” body is anything but like our material body which is made of flesh, blood, pus, stool and urine. God’s body is not subjected to material laws. His bodily parts are interchangeable where as our bodily parts are not interchangeable. For example, we can only chew food with our mouth and not hands. We can walk with our legs but not with our eyes. We can procreate with our genitals but not with our ears. Therefore our bodily parts are fixed with fixed functions. On the other hand, God’s body which is “transcendental” (meaning sat chit and Ananda) can perform the functions interchangeably. God can procreate with His eyes, eat with His eyes or run with His ears etc In other words, His spiritual bodily parts are not fixed to perform fixed functions like our material bodies.

The bottom line - God’s body is transcendental with spiritual qualities. When God descends to this earth planet, still He possesses His transcendental body and He never relinquishes His transcendental body to take a material body of flesh and blood. When Lord Krishna descended 5000 years ago, He never got old. He never got diseased and He never died. Krishna only disappeared out of His sweet will just as the sun disappears from the sky every evening similarly Krishna disappeared from our vision. In the battle of Kurukshetra, Krishna was more than 100 years old…but He never got old…if not how is it possible to be a driver of the chariot for Arjuna in the battle of Kurukshetra? Lord Krishna’s body is not material and was not material. His body was always transcendental to the mundane rules and laws of this world. Lord Krishna’s body, when He was present 5000 years ago, was SAT CHIT and ANANDA (transcendental). His body was eternal, full of knowledge and blissful.

Krishna Himself chides people who consider Him an ordinary being. In the Bhagavad Gita, Ch 9 text 11, He says to Arjuna that “Fools deride Me when I descend in the human form. They do not know My transcendental nature as the Supreme Lord of all that be”. Foolish people think that Lord Krishna possesses an ordinary human body like us whereas Krishna proclaims that His body is transcendental to material nature and laws.

Therefore, please understand that whoever possesses a material flesh and blood body and undergoes the miseries of old-age, disease and death can never become God and is never God past present or future. Please do not be cheated by such cheap Gods. God is great and is NEVER subjected to material laws in the past, present or future. He is transcendental to all dualities of material suffering not only in His spiritual abode but also when He descends to earth or other earthly planets. His body never perishes or deteriorates or dies or subjected to kill. He is eternal, omniscient and blissful at all times and at all places. Anything contrary to this idea is not God but a mortal being like any of us (perhaps with some mystic power)

With this knowledge, we can truly know who is God and who is not!

Bharatavarsa.net: Book distribution seminar: Distributing Books Through the Smart Box Program in Houston

Hare Krsna dear devotees,

Please accept my humble obeisances. All glories to Srila Prabhupada!

I have been blessed with the opportunity to engage in the wonderful Smart-Box book-distribution program in Hillcroft, the "Little India" of Houston, Texas. I had the chance to maintain the Smart Boxes there yesterday, and it was a very enlivening experience.

I have four locations in the Sugar Land section of Hillcroft that I maintain. Usually I say hello to the owner or workers, remove the laxmi, count the books taken, replace those books with new ones, write all this down in a notebook, thank the owner of the store or restaurant for his or her support, and move on to the next Box. Fairly businesslike.

But yesterday was different. I arrived at mid-morning, when most businesses were just opening; so most of the business managers were busy getting up to speed for the day. I introduced myself as a new volunteer in the area. Most people asked me about the temple -- what we were doing or how the new construction was progressing. All very positive.

I went up to a hair salon that had one patron inside. I did my service there and was getting ready to leave but was asked to wait. An employee insisted that I take a donation from her, then another got her purse out to give another donation, and finally the customer also insisted that I take some laxmi from her as well. I thanked them all, gave them all a flyer about Gaura Purnima, and with a "Hare Krishna!" I was gone.

On the ground floor of that building was a restaurant with a Smart Box. Unfortunately the restaurant hadn't opened yet that morning, and so I started walking toward the next Box location. Then I heard "Wait!" It was the hair-salon customer, who worked in the restaurant, opening its locked door. She said, "The donation box is SO full! And there's only one book left!" So I filled the Smart Box up with books, removed the laxmi, and left some flyers on the table. Too much ecstasy.

Another location donated $8 (from a customer earlier, the cashier said) and a music-store worker offered me a Gita DVD, which I hope to share with others in the Sugar Land bhakti-vriksa program. Another owner told me how much he loved to see Manish Puri Prabhu each month and was happy to hear of his recent successes with the Motel Gita program.

Overall, it was a wonderful morning of Smart Box distribution, and all as a result of Srila Prabhupada's books and Lord Krishna's mercy! Now if next time I can just remember to bring some prasadam to offer the people in the businesses, so that Prabhupada's "secret weapon" can melt their hearts and make them even more receptive to the message in the books.

Your eager servant, Bhakta David

Bhakta Chris, New York, USA: The Humble Musings Of The Manhattan Monk 4/12/11

Humility is the patience we need to plant seeds in the hearts of our friends, and then to do our best to help those seeds blossom, through careful and thorough watering, weeding, love, and care. It's abandoning the idea that any of this is happening overnight. No quick cures or conquests. It's the motivation for the journey, the joy for the art of the relationship being discovered, a true love that never threatens to cease or be discouraged.

Humility is knowing we can fall at any second, pushed like a dry, dead leaf by the winds of our mind. It is a desperation from this realization that gives us no choice but to the cling to lotus feet of the Lord, of our teachers and guides. It's knowing that the biggest joke around is thinking we are the all-powerful, all-strong Center of the Universe. It's a cry for constant shelter to protect ourselves from our false ego.

Humility is very clearly understanding that what is being done is not our sole doing. In fact, it is knowing that what is accomplished is done by very little of our own ability or talent, but by the mercy of Krishna. It is also very clearly knowing that although what we do is small, nevertheless if it's saturated in enough of our actual sincerity, it is powerful enough to attract the mercy of Krishna. It is the constant attempt to purify our sincere attention.

Humility is the perspective that will pull us through the painful journey within, the effort to see who we actually are by first confronting who we are not. It is the foundation to make sure we are not driven mad or astray by the intensity of facing up to who we are not. It is knowing the need to fully take shelter of the spiritual personalities that surround us to understand what is happening to us. It's not going through the abyss alone.

Book Distribution News: Distributing Books Through the Smart Box Program in Houston

Hare Krsna dear devotees,

Please accept my humble obeisances All glories to Srila Prabhupada

I met this man at Finch and he told me we had met before 2 months earlier. When I inquired he told me he had taken the Bhagavad gita and he even confirmed he had read bits of it. I offered him another book and his first reaction was that he has his own practice and no more books. So I did not push him but then he asked me ÒI have read that Bhagavad gita, what is this Krishna consciousness?Ó I tried to answer his question with examples on how we imagine happiness to be a by-product of senses and sense object interactions but it never happens and frustrates us and told him how we need to look for the ultimate pleasure object of the senses - Krishna. We discussed several examples and then he inquired ÒHow do you make others see thisÓ. I told him we start from the point of purifying ourselves and instead of looking down upon and try to serve. Then he asked, Ôwhat is the process of purifying yourself?Õ By this time I was shocked so I asked him, would you do it if I told you. So I asked him to repeat the Maha mantra after me but he said D no, no mantras, I have my practice I donÕt want to leave. So I said no problem, I will tell you a small mantra ÔGaurangaÕ and then I continued to explain to him how sound vibration transforms consciousness. By this time he was holding the path of perfection in his hands. Finally he asked me D Ôwhat does that mantra mean, the one that you were asking me to repeatÕ. So I shared with him the Hare Krishna maha mantra and explained the meaning and how it works on the dirt in our heart. He himself gave a generous donation for the book and asked me when the discourse in the temple is. He was such a sincere soul; I encouraged his practice and complimented his mother who I commented had a strong influence on him. He was very surprised and asked me how did I know. Remembering Srila PrabhupadaÕs words to one of his discipleÕs parents I said Ò When the fruit is so nice, you can judge that tree is wonderfulÓ He was a genuine soul so affected by just a few words of Srila PrabhupadaÕs books, he left saying he would come again and I pray that he does.

The next day he turned up at Urbanedgeyoga for the Bhagavad gita class and stayed for the evening. The day before he was saying no to trying the Maha-mantra but I could see that he was chanting and singing nicely with his eyes closed. Later after prashad he told me that first time we met 2 months ago he actually took the wrong train and went to wrong station so he ended up meeting me. And he told me as he was walking home from station that he was praying to God for some help, some spiritual answers and thatÕs when he had met me.

Dandavats.com: The Personality of Lord Rama

By Giriraj Swami

The Personality of Lord Rama

By Giriraj Swami

Today, in observance of Sri Rama-navami, we shall read a verse from Srimad-Bhagavatam, Canto Two, Chapter Seven: “Scheduled Incarnations.”

TEXT 24

yasma adad udadhir udha-bhayanga-vepomargam sapady ari-puram haravad didhaksohdure suhrn-mathita-rosa-susona-drstya

tatapyamana-makaroraga-nakra-cakrah

TRANSLATION

The Personality of Godhead Ramacandra, being aggrieved for His distant intimate friend [Sita], glanced over the city of the enemy Ravana with red-hot eyes like those of Hara [who wanted to burn the kingdom of heaven]. The great ocean, trembling in fear, gave Him His way because its family members, the aquatics like the sharks, snakes, and crocodiles, were being burnt by the heat of the angry red-hot eyes of the Lord.

PURPORT by Srila Prabhupada

The Personality of Godhead has every sentiment of a sentient being, like all other living beings, because He is the chief and original living entity, the supreme source of all other living beings. He is the nitya, or the chief eternal amongst all other eternals. He is the chief one, and all others are the dependent many. The many eternals are supported by the one eternal, and thus both the eternals are qualitatively one. Due to such oneness, both the eternals constitutionally have a complete range of sentiments, but the difference is that the sentiments of the chief eternal are different in quantity from the sentiments of the dependent eternals. When Ramacandra was angry and showed His red-hot eyes, the whole ocean became heated with that energy, so much so that the aquatics within the great ocean felt the heat, and the personified ocean trembled in fear and offered the Lord an easy path for reaching the enemy’s city. The impersonalists will see havoc in this red-hot sentiment of the Lord because they want to see negation in perfection. Because the Lord is absolute, the impersonalists imagine that in the Absolute the sentiment of anger, which resembles mundane sentiments, must be conspicuous by absence. Due to a poor fund of knowledge, they do not realize that the sentiment of the Absolute Person is transcendental to all mundane concepts of quality and quantity. Had Lord Ramacandra’s sentiment been of mundane origin, how could it disturb the whole ocean and its inhabitants? Can any mundane red-hot eye generate heat in the great ocean? These are factors to be distinguished in terms of the personal and impersonal conceptions of the Absolute Truth. As it is said in the beginning of the Srimad-Bhagavatam, the Absolute Truth is the source of everything, so the Absolute Person cannot be devoid of the sentiments that are reflected in the temporary mundane world. Rather, the different sentiments found in the Absolute, either in anger or in mercy, have the same qualitative influence, or, in other words, there is no mundane difference of value because these sentiments are all on the absolute plane. Such sentiments are definitely not absent in the Absolute, as the impersonalists think, making their mundane estimation of the transcendental world.

Japa Group: We Owe It To The Lord

A meditation came to me today. We owe it to our spiritual master and the Lord to chant with respect - the Lord has given this precious and rare opportunity to chant His holy names - it's up to us to make the decision to take full advantage of this. At every second we make a decision....whether to listen to our minds during Japa, or to listen to Krsna's holy names - let us all make the right decision.

Mukunda Charan das, SA: Hanuman And Rama – A Rama Navami Meditation

Today is Rama Navami, the Holy Appearance Day of Lord Ramachandra.  I’ve attended Rama Navami twice at ISKCON Juhu, in Mumbai.  I was told that over 650,000 people visit the Temple to take darshan of Sita-Rama-Laxman-Hanuman on Rama Navami.  It is quite a spectacle.  I thought I would say something about service to Lord Rama and Sri Hanumanji on this most auspicious day.

Hanuman, The Dedicated Servant Of Lord Rama

What immediately comes to mind when you think of Sri Hanumanji? Loyalty? Dedication to his master, Lord Ramachandra? His monkey-like form? This is evident in Sanatana Goswami’s Brihad-Bhagavatamrita – where Hanuman rejects the opportunity to reside with Lord Krishna in Dwaraka. Why is this so? Hanuman is so fixed in the service of Lord Rama tha he only wants to serve Rama in Rama’s kingdom, Ayodhya. Servitude (dasya-rasa) to Lord Rama in Ayodhya is the sthayi-bhava or ‘eternal mood of service’ of Hanuman. And that is why Hanuman is used as the example of servitude or dasyam when describing the nine processes of devotional service.

Hanuman is the son of lord Siva and Anjani. Tradition has it that Brihaspati’s maidservant, Punjikasthala, approached the great sage in a “loving mood”. Brihaspati, in turn, the form of a female monkey. In this form she was known as Anjani. Lord Siva entrused an embryo in the care of Vayu; and Vayu implanted the embryo within the womb of Anjani. That embryo was Hanuman.

The fact that Hanuman took the form of his monkey explains his playful nature. There is a species of monkeys in India called the ‘Hanuman monkey’ or langur. The name vanara is also ascribed to Hanuman. Valmiki explains in the Ramayana that the vanaras resembled monkeys, but were really half-human and half-monkey. The vanaras (meaning ‘proper to the forest’ or ‘animals of the forest’) were empowered semi-divine beings who wore clothing, could speak, had homes and conducted festivals and funeral-rites. In addition to this, these extraordinary beings had mystic powers and could change their size at will.

Owing to the stone-like hardness of his body, Anjani named Hanuman Vajranga. She taught him how to eat fruits that were reddish like the sun. One day, Vajranga saw the sun glowing in the sky and tried to swalow the sun, mistaking it for fruit. This angered Indra, who struck Vajranga on his chin (hanu) with his vajra (lightning bolt) weapon. Hence the name Hanuman – ‘hanu’ being chin and ‘man’ being glorious ie. ‘one who has a glorious chin’. That is how Hanuman got his cleft chin. After being struck by Indra, Vayu brought brought the unconscious Hanuman into a cave in the Patala regions. Vayu’s absence on earth caused the earth to be devoid of air. Brahma went to Patala to comfort Vayu and to bring Hanuman back to consciousness. Lord Brahma and the devas blessed Hanuman in various ways, bestowing upon him extraordinary mystic powers. Lord Brahma blessed him that no brahmastra weapon would affect him. Surya bestowed upon him one-percent of his brilliance. Indra blessed him that he would be immune to thunder. And Vayu blessed him with speed comparable to that of Garuda, Lord Visnu’s carrier. From this time, Anjani’s son became known as Hanuman.

Hanuman was cursed to forget his powers until the advent of Lord Rama by some brahmanas who were irked by his restless pranks in the forest. Though semi-divine, Hanuman had many of the characteristics of a monkey. He had a tendency to jump from tree to tree and was a bit of a mischief-maker. Hanuman is also a famous as brahmacari (celibate). Another testament to his dedication to the feet of Lord Rama. Hanuman is so dedicated to Lord Rama that he is often depicted with his hands tearing open his chest to reveal the image of his heart, Lord Rama. Hanuman is also often portrayed kneeling with his palms joined before Lord Ramachandra, Sita (Rama’s wife) and Lakshmana (Rama’s brother). Sita-Rama-Lakshmana-Hanuman ki jay!!
