ISKCON Melbourne, AU: Today's Darsana

16/07/2011

"O Lord of the demigods, please quickly remove this useless material existence I am undergoing. O Lord of the Yadus, please destroy this vast ocean of sins which has no shore.

Alas, this is certain that Lord Jagannatha's lotus feet are bestowed upon those who feel themselves fallen and have no shelter in this world but Him. May that Jagannatha Swami be the object of my vision."

(Sri Jagannathastakam sung by Lord Caitanya)

Jagannatha Swami IS the object of our darsana today, with His feet reaching out to bless us all!

H.G. Sankarshan das Adhikari, USA: Saturday 16 July 2011--The Pivotal Day in World History--and--Replace Bogus Guru With Bona Fide Guru?

A daily broadcast of the Ultimate Self Realization Course Saturday 16 July 2011 The Supreme Personality of Godhead, Lord Sri Krishna, and His eternal consort, Srimati Radharani are enjoying transcendental pastimes in the topmost planet of the spiritual world, Sri Goloka Vrindavan. They are beckoning us to rejoin them. (Click on photo to see a larger image.) Our Mission: To help everyone awaken their original Krishna consciousness, which is eternal, full of knowledge and full of bliss. Such a global awakening will, in one stroke, solve all the problems of the world society bringing in a new era of unprecedented peace and prosperity for all. May that day, which the world so desperately needs, come very soon. We request you to participate in this mission by reviving your dormant Krishna consciousness and assisting us in spreading this science all over the world. Dedicated with love to ISKCON Founder-Acharya: His Divine Grace A.C. Bhaktivedanta Swami Prabhupada, our beloved spiritual master, and to you, our dear readers. Today's Thought: The Pivotal Day in World History Uploaded from Bhaktivedanta Ashram, Austin, Texas USA There is no question of global peace, happiness, and prosperity when the world leaders are not enlightened with knowledge of the foundational truths of reality. Sadly, due to such a leadership vacuum, at the present moment the world has been plunged into an ever-increasingly chaotic quagmire. The Krishna consciousness movement can create a class of leaders to bring about a sublime golden era of universal peace and happiness on this planet, but unfortunately no one is listening to its spokesmen. The world population and its leaders are totally caught in the maddened pursuit of wanton sense gratification practically on the level of wild animals. We pray for that day when they will decide to start listening to the enlightened spiritual masters who purely represent the Krishna consciousness movement. That day will be the pivotal day in world history. Sankarshan Das Adhikari Krishna Can Make the Whole World Happy http://www.backtohome.com/images/Krishna/Gopinatha.JPG Answers by Citing the Vedic Version: Question: Replace Bogus Guru With Bona Fide Guru Dear Spiritual Master, Hare Krishna, These days there are many bogus spiritual masters who pretend to be perfect spiritual masters but in reality they are more engrossed in sense gratification than even ordinary household people. If by mistake any person takes initiation from any such guru and then later on realizes his mistake that he got initiation from a woman hunter or person engrossed in sense gratification, can that fellow go for initiation from a bona fide guru? Can he replace his bogus spiritual master with a bona fide spiritual master? Please advise. Regards, Pankaj M. Answer: Take Real Initiation from a Bona Fide Guru Initiation from a bogus guru is not a valid initiation. It does not count as a real initiation. If one has unfortunately received such an initiation, it should be neglected, and one should take initiation from a bona fide spiritual master, who is fully empowered to deliver him from the cycle of birth and death. Akrura das, Gita Coaching: HOW GITA COACHING HELPS?

Coaching helps devotees become more effective in areas of health, sadhana, service, relationships, etc. These areas influence each other, so it’s important to work on all of them. Therefore, Bhagavad-gita points out the importance of balance.

Coaching helps devotees to become spiritually, mentally and physically strong. It provides relevant questions, principles, strategies and tools, but progress requires our daily action. Sincere effort attracts Krsna’s attention and brings strength and momentum.

Here are some of the benefits of coaching:
- Ideas for spiritual and professional success
- Self discipline and sadhana
- Better relationships
- Life management skills
- Inspiration
- Overcoming internal and external obstacles
- Greater sense of intuition and conscience
- Stronger connection to Krsna’s principles
- Fresh perspectives by seeing through the eyes of the scriptures

Bharatavarsa.net: Book distribution seminar: Two short stories from Montreal

French Largess

I met a French man who showed interest during our conversation, but he still didn't want to take my English Bhagavad-gita. So I showed him the hardcover French version I had. I couldn't present it to him nicely because I don't speak French, and so I wasn't confident about asking for a big donation. Instead of the standard $20.00, I told him it was just $15.00. But he misheard me and, after looking through every one of his pockets for enough to make a donation, he eventually handed me $50.00.

A Rare Guest

Yesterday we met a nice boy at the PIE-IX Metro Station. He had been sitting close to Bhakta Kurt and me as we rode the train reading aloud the pastimes of Dhruva Maharaja. When we all got off at the same metro stop, we saw him at the top of the escalator waiting for the bus. As we approached him, he looked like he wanted to say something to us. Hopeful that he hadn't felt infringed upon by our reading, I acknowledged him and we began a conversation. The first thing he said was how peaceful a presence we had. Being an especially sensitive person, he said, he was very aware of people's moods, and he appreciated that there was something rare about our appearance and attitude, something different from the depressive mood he was used to encountering. While we all rode the bus, Kurt and I, seeing that he was bright and thoughtful, invited him to the temple.

He came, but he was a little reluctant to enter, so we stood outside and spoke about our disappointment at the loss of innocence in ourselves and in society at large. Eventually he took Srila Prabhupada's Gita and The Perfection of Yoga. Then he said he wanted to learn meditation. So I took the opportunity to break through his reluctance to come inside by telling him of one monk who is a skilled meditator and teacher. Inside the temple, I interrupted Karuna-sindhu's studying to bring him to meet this boy, and the three of us spent the next two hours discussing meditation techniques and philosophy. We gave him japa beads to chant on, and demonstrated how to chant. He was overpowered just by hearing the mantra, without himself even chanting.

When he had to leave just before lunch, I gave him some of Sri Sri Radha-Manohara's maha-prasadam, and without waiting, he ate most of it right in front of us. I got an email from him a few hours later in which he wrote that he had felt a surge of happiness after leaving, "almost as though he was directly touched by God." I expect we'll see this boy again soon.

Your servant,

Yogendra dasa

PS I just received another donation for the sankirtan van in Africa. We would like to thank Devala Rsi das and his wife Sri Pati dd who gave $500. We now have $4,100.

Akrura das, Gita Coaching: THE CONSCIOUS ART AS DEVOTIONAL SERVICE IN A SUSTAINABLE SOCIETY

Photo: Lila Avatara dasa (right) and Akrura dasa at ISKCON Santiago, Chile

THE CONSCIOUS ART AS DEVOTIONAL SERVICE IN A SUSTAINABLE SOCIETY

By Lila Avatar das (Dr. Miguel Córdova)

Indoamerica Corporation, will manage the intercultural movement of the Arts, Applied to the Transmission of transcendent message of Vedic and Originary sources, and it is shaping with various professionals in complementary areas, including Amara Gauranga dasa (President of ISKCON Chile). One goal of this new institution will be to provide the framework that allows to develop the Ayurveda Today Program, as a real deal for the Promotion of Health for the society in Chile and Latin America.

We have friends interested in studying Ayurveda with us, others are studying Ayurveda with Lubrano, and everyone wants to partner with us to practice it properly. Prof. Arcangelo Lubrano also expressed interest in seeing how to collaborate with us.

Ayurveda Doctors in India have been working with us for free so far, as seen in "About us" section of our website, but with the legal constitution of the Corporation, we must formalize our relationship in economic terms.

We are exploring the methodology of the Service Learning (SL), in which the University of Santiago de Chile is interested in collaborating. Lila Avatar is completing a Diploma in Education for Sustainable Development, which is taught in this university.

We have chosen a development strategy for the Ayurveda, which will bring this knowledge to the population level, through Community Health Centers of Ayurveda. The project is based in the current Community Offices, which will be implemented with services in the areas of education, agriculture and energy-water efficiency. We are in discussions with Peñalolén municipality to formulate a pilot project based on the USACH Diploma.

In the agricultural area family and community Urban Gardens will be held (with organically grown vegetables, flowers and medicinal plants) as the pilot in La Reina, together with a program of education in values (with school impact). Both actions will facilitate the mainstreaming of Ayurvedic worldview, then develop the Program for the Promotion of Health, in which we will insert the Vedic wisdom. In the Ayurveda area I am in talks with Dhanvantari Swami.

In the field of education and Vedic wisdom, we have an educational plan for parents of school to train children as the elderly, using El Maderín for teaching Vedic values to children in the school environment. Elderly training includes the development of videoconferencing, which is based in the Bhakti Sastri course, that Lila Avatar is ending with Param Padam dasa. This system is under construction and requires improvements in the area of video production, to make them attractive to people who do not know Krishna Consciousness.

To support the Vedic education we have begun talks with Hanumatpresaka Swami, Founder and General Secretary of NIOS, North American Institute for Oriental and Classical Studies, whose orientation has many similarities to Indoamerica Movement, which facilitate exploring a collaborative Vaishnava relationship between both entities, with common objectives to be defined.

All these activities are described briefly as Sustainable Development Program, which administers the Indoamerica Corporation, an institution whose legal process of incorporation is ready to start, to conclude that we can open discussions with municipalities in which live low-income people, beginning in Peñalolén, Santiago.

The role of these programs must be carefully analyzed through performance coaching for the care of devotees in formation, a topic that is being addressed with the assistance of the Building a Caring Community Seminar, held Akrura dasa in Santiago.

With the launch of the Indoamerica Movement and its services for a sustainable society, the expansion of Krishna consciousness will have instrumental in the formation of new devotees, motivated in devotional service, through the Conscious Art celebrating the Environmental Care of Mother Earth, as a vehicle for expression and communication between human beings and the Supreme Personality of God.

Ananda Subramanian, Iowa, USA: God – absent or present?

God is absent – at least that is the common realization of majority of the people of today including people who profess to follow any religion. Religious people diligently go to church or mosque or temple and do their routine, come back home and live a life as if nothing matters. Thinking about it deeply, religion has become a series of routines we follow. How can we know or see God simply by going through the motions?

Rather, I say, it is better to be an agnostic and wonder about the creation. Look around and gasp in wonder on how things are so perfectly arranged. How life thrives in every nook and corner of the planet. How beautiful the sun rises and shines upon the myriad mountains, lakes, rivers, oceans, forests and all of its life forms. The beauty of our planet in itself is worthy to question the existence of a creator. How can things be so perfect and beautiful? With these amazing thoughts one can sit in the comfort of one’s living room and simply meditate on the possible creator of this wonderful creation? One can simply ask to oneself “who must have created such a wonderful piece of art with all its flora and fauna thriving and coexisting at the same time?” Thus glorifying Mother Nature, we can question the concept of a creator?

The genuine inquisitiveness questioning the existence of a creator and appreciation of Mother Nature is far more powerful than going through the so called religious routine of the believers. When we question to ourselves and seek with a genuine desire to know if there is a creator, the creator Himself causelessly will present Himself that best suits our intelligence.

This is the beginning of the revival of our lost relationship with God. We do not need rituals and institutions to teach us the greatness of God. Simply all that is required is a genuine and humble appreciation for His creation and an aptitude for learning with an open mind – then God becomes present and not absent.

That’s (mundane) Life

Toronto, Ontario

I turned a corner at Roxborough and Yonge where just outside of a coffee shop, “Second Cup” two dogs were mating. The dog’s owner (or owners) must have been sipping away inside allowing nature to take its own course outside.

Further south a man glimpsed at my robes. He was about sixtyish, introduced himself, and told me he goes to Puskara, India, every year. I didn’t bother to ask whether it was for a spiritual venture or for beach fun and beach dope. I merely jumped to my conclusion; that his intent was less spiritual otherwise he would have prolonged the conversation. Oh well! He’s on his own track. Maybe, next he’ll plunge into the spiritual side of life. At least he was nice.

I ended up on Queen St. pass Old City Hall which architecturally puts New City Hall to shame. Pedestrian traffic is everywhere, uncongested, evenly-spread but moving. 25% of walkers are on I-pods. Maybe 5% are munching or seriously devouring. Two people have an argument. A street person is in slumber. Everyone has his or her own intent/purpose.

I guess I’m seeing it all -- eating, sleeping, mating and defending. In Sanskrit the terms are ahara (eating), nidra (sleeping), bhaya(defending), and maithuni(mating). All of this seen over the course of 75 minutes on a rectangular route on a Toronto grid from Yonge to Queen, to Spadina and Dupont back to the ashram. This is all a visualization of what I read about. It is like the pages of the books we read. The graphic and yet ordinary goings-on of secular living becomes manifest at every step you take. Whether dog or man, such is life as it goes on in the mundane sense.

Looking Fragile

Toronto, Ontario

Things are looking fragile in the world economic scene. The country of Italy is on the latest list of financial challenges in Europe. Ireland, Greece and Portugal are part of the unfortunate stack of debt contagion and now, one of the strangest economies of Euro land, to a great surprise, is the land of vineyards.

This recent surprise about domino woes is cause for much concern and anguish. Some thoughts and questions come to my mind. Is there a co-relation between the decline of spirituality to lack of funds? Does greed and karma play a role in this? Naturally, being some kind of spiritualist I may be incline to think so.

China is now a powerhouse with India taking a second place. This is a shift in power dynamics from west to east -- from America and Europe to the east. If money is power then as we can see, a remolding is taking place on the basis of the movement of “Lakshmi”. Lakshmi is the Sanskrit word to describe wealth. This primary goddess has a reputation for being flickering and changing locations.

This is the way of the world and its history so it seems. It gives cause to re-think certain values and certain ways of doing things. It’s an interesting time, now and always. Nothing is permanent.

And because I think like a spiritualist I’m inclined towards a pat answer or a solution to the problem. There’s a need to step up on tightening our belts, re-visit simple ways and say “Hello” to god again. History tells of those trends of what was just described.

As I contemplated on the matter on my evening stretch of legs I saw a billboard promoting “Pizza Pizza”, an Italian Canadian based business. The image is of a young couple indulging in a succulent slice of pizza. They look happy, of course. No doubt the message carries a kernel of deception. Happiness is permanent with the spirit and not necessarily with financial arrangements.

Subhavilasa das ACBSP, Toronto, CA: Guru Purnima or Srila Vyasadeva Purnima (yesterday)

Picture
Picture
So Vyasadeva was a real person accepted by all authorities and any one can judge how wonderful he was to compile the Vedic literatures. He is therefore known as Mahamuni. Muni means thoughtful or great thinker or great poet and Maha means still greater. So there is no comparison with Vyasadeva with any writer or thinker or philosopher. Nobody can estimate the scholarly importance of Srila Vyasadeva. He composed many millions of Sanskrit verses and we are just trying to receive a fragmental knowledge out of them by our tiny efforts only. Srila Vyasadeva therefore summarized the whole Vedic knowledge in the shape of Srimad Bhagavatam which is known as the ripened fruit of the desire tree known as Vedic knowledge. The ripened fruit is received hand to hand through disciplic succession and anyone who does this work in disciplic succession from Srila Vyasadeva is considered as representative of Vyasadeva and as such the bona fide Spiritual Master's Appearance Day is worshipped as Vyas  Puja. Not only that, the exalted seat on which the Spiritual Master sits is also called Vyasasana. In the Mayavadi Sampradaya they observe the Guru Purnima day to offer respect to the Spiritual Master. This system of offering respect to the Spiritual Master is current in all sections of Vedic followers, but so far we of the Gaudiya Sampradaya is concerned, we offer on the Appearance Day of the Spiritual Master our humble homage annually and this particular auspicious moment is called Vyas Puja.

~ Letter from His Divine Grace A.C. Bhaktivedanta Swami Srila Prabhupada

So here is another beautiful and concise explanation of Guru Purnima. There is sometimes question as to why we do not celebrate it in a bigger way. In fact in a letter Srila Prabhupada wrote on August 2nd 1969 he states, "But this Guru Purnima is generally performed by the Mayavadi sects."

Srila Prabhupada is clear on the  importance of Srila Vyasadeva and the fact that a bonafide spiritual master is the representative of Srila Vyasadeva.  He is clear on the importance of the bonafide spiritual master. And he is also clear on the importance of Vyas puja.

Jaya Sri Vyasadeva!
All glories to Srila Prabhupada.

Japa Group: Tips For Attentive Japa

I remember hearing a devotee talking about chanting...this is when I was watching video footage before joining the movement in the mid 1980's. He made a profound and simple statement: "We chant Hare Krsna to control the mind" - here are some tips to help us focus the mind on the mantra.

  1. Don't do anything whilst chanting Japa
  2. Pronounce each word very clearly (even if it means slowing down your chanting)
  3. Listen very carefully to the sound coming out your mouth (some devotees stand in a corner, others hold their cupped hand to their ear to hear more clearly)
  4. Try to chant in a non-distractive environment and if possible read the Mantra whilst you chant (in Temples this was a common addition to the Temple room...the Maha Mantra on the wall)..I personally found this a very effective way to keep the mind from wandering.
We all have to pray to Krsna to help us chant attentively...

Japa Group: Our Only Medicine

Hare Krsna my dear devotees. Yesterday I read a post from someone on Facebook talking about how merciful the Holy names of the Lord is - that you can be without devotees around you with no service to perform in a temple but you can chant anywhere you are even in the prison.

So we should take advantage of this mercy that we got from the Spiritual Master and always chant - it's the sacrifice of this age of Kali and the medicine to overcome the material energy tricks. Below is a very inspiring verse of the Sri Namastakam from Srila Rupa Goswami.

O Holy Name, You manifest Yourself in two forms; as vacya, the Supreme Person, and as vacaka, the sound vibration of the Holy Name.
We know Your second form to be more merciful than the first. Even a person who commits many offenses to the first form may always be plunged into an ocean of bliss by serving and worshiping Your Holy Name.

I wish you have a very blessed end of week.

your servant,

Aruna devi

Vraja Kishor, JP: Spiritual Vision – Bhagavad Gita 13.27

यावत् सञ्जायते किञ्चित्सत्त्वम्́ स्थावर-जńगमम्

क्स्̣एत्र-क्स्̣एत्रज्ञ-सम्́योगात्तद् विद्धि भरतर्स्̣अभ

yāvat sañjāyate kiñcit

sattvaḿ sthāvara-jańgamam

kṣetra-kṣetrajña-saḿyogāt

tad viddhi bharatarṣabha

yāvat — whatever; sañjāyate — comes into being; kiñcit — anything; sattvam — existence; sthāvara — not moving; jańgamam — moving; kṣetra — of the body; kṣetra-jña — and the knower of the body; saḿyogāt — by the union between; tat viddhi — you must know it; bharata-ṛṣabha — O chief of the Bhāratas.

“O chief of the Bhāratas, know that whatever you see in existence, both the moving and the nonmoving, is only a combination of the field of activities and the knower of the field.” – Bhagavad Gita 13.27

PURPORT

Both material nature and the living entity, which were existing before the creation of the cosmos, are explained in this verse. Whatever is created is but a combination of the living entity and material nature. There are many manifestations like trees, mountains and hills which are not moving, and there are many existences which are moving, and all of them are but combinations of material nature and the superior nature, the living entity. Without the touch of the superior nature, the living entity, nothing can grow. The relationship between matter and nature is eternally going on, and this combination is effected by the Supreme Lord; therefore He is the controller of both the superior and inferior natures. The material nature is created by Him, and the superior nature is placed in this material nature, and thus all these activities and manifestations take place.

REPORT

You have to understand that whatever exists, even inert things, comes to exist because of a union between the world and spirit.

It is easier to see that living things, especially those that move around and exhibit will and intelligent, are a union of the spirit with the material. After all we see they have a material body, and we also see that there is a spiritual consciousness animating the material body, which ceases to be animated when the not-directly-tangible spiritual consciousness disconnects from its union with that body. But tad viddhi – we have to understand that even things that seem inert are actually alive.

Without the touch of the superior nature (“spirit”) nothing can grow. A tree grows. Crystals grow. Even rocks grow from the earth, exist, and then are eroded and die. Mountains similarly. A mountain exists because the spiritual energy contacted the material energy. Material energy on its own is inert. But nowhere does material energy exist divorced from the superior energy. The superior energy is always the husband of the material energy. Thus we have things called surface tension, gravity, and electricity – all which display symptoms of life and intelligence in minute proportions.

The Earth has coalesced as a globe, a glob due to the active principle of gravity. Why is there an active principle in an inert substance!? It is because the atma pervades all mater at the finest subatomic level. Therefore inert substances are not truly inert.

Everything that we see in our world, be it “alive” or “not” is in fact the inert material energy being piloted by the active spiritual energy. The active spiritual energy is of two categories, the individual fragment of energy (atma), and the all pervading energy (paramatma).

CONPORT

Now, to put this in perspective.

The 13th chapter of Bhagavad Gita has five major sections. (1) First Arjuna asks the question, basically, “what is matter and spirit, and how do can we educate ourselves about them?” Then Kṛṣṇa describes (2) matter and spirit as the field of action and the knower of the field. (3) Kṛṣṇa next describes the process and purpose of education in this subject. (4) Then Kṛṣṇa describes how matter and spirit become unified.  (5) Finally Kṛṣṇa describes the result of becoming educated in these topics.

The texts that correspond to these sections are: Section one is only 1 verse, the first. Section two goes from text 2 to text 7. Section three from 8 – 19. Section four is 20-26. The final section is the remainder, 27 – 35.

This means that today’s verse, 13.27, begins a new section for us! So let’s summarize the previous section in more detail and then give a “coming attractions” for the new section.

The previous section described how spirit and matter merge and form a union, and what that union is like. It begins in text 20 and 21 by saying, “Matter constantly transforms from one state to the other. These transformations appear to be sometimes desirable, sometimes undesirable to a living being, but the truth is that the pleasure or pain experienced from these transformations does not exist at all in the transforming matter, it only exists in the subjective perception of the spirit projecting itself into those transformations.”

Then text 22 identifies the weld that unified matter and spirit, “the desire to enjoy a sensation of pleasure from positive transformations is what binds soul to matter.”

The remaining texts do not talk about the individual soul. There are, we already know from early in the chapter, two types of soul – an individual fragment, and an all-pervading whole. The fragmental soul is atma and the complete soul is paramatma (“Supersoul”). The difference is that the ever-fragmented spirit is an individual being of infinitesimal scope, but the ever-whole Supersoul is a unified being of infinite scope.

Text 23 begins this subsection by saying, “The Supersoul is never bound to matter by a desire to enjoy it, only the fragmented soul is.” Text 24 says, “If you realize that there is a soul which is never bound to matter, you are going to become liberated from matter too.” Text 25 explains how to realize this divine, unfettered Supersoul, “Loving devotion tangibly reveals the Divine Personality of Godhead to the fullest extent. Otherwise, science, meditation, and selflessness can reveal the Divine Supersoul to a lesser extent if mixed with devotion.” How do you get devotion, the most important ingredient in seeing God? Text 26 answers, “Hear about God from those who know about God by dint of direct realization!”

That is my summary of the previous section. Now to give you a coming attraction for the next section.

This section describes the effect of being able to see the Supersoul.

27: We see that everything, even what appears inert, is full of the Supersoul.

28: In every living thing we see the Supersoul.

29: Seeing the Supersoul everywhere we are always god-conscious and thus naturally free of self-degrading selfish desires (which are the weld that binds us to matter).

30: We see that matter is just transforming constantly…

31: The spirit is completely above and beyond everything that happens in the material world.

32: Though it can be welded to matter, it always remain distinct and can detach itself and be free from matter.

33: In this it is like space, which holds everything within it, but is separate from everything too.

34: Or like the Sun, which illuminates everything from a distant place beyond all the things it shines on.

35: Seeing thus, the fragmental soul becomes liberated like the Supersoul.
