Australian News: Japa Group – join in now

I remember hearing a devotee talking about chanting…this is when I was watching video footage before joining the movement in the mid 1980′s. He made a profound and simple statement: “We chant Hare Krsna to control the mind” – here are some tips to help us focus the mind on the mantra.

-Don’t do anything whilst chanting Japa

-Pronounce each word very clearly (even if it means slowing down your chanting)

-Listen very carefully to the sound coming out your mouth (some devotees stand in a corner, others hold their cupped hand to their ear to hear more clearly)

-Try to chant in a non-distractive environment and if possible read the Mantra whilst you chant (in Temples this was a common addition to the Temple room…the Maha Mantra on the wall)..I personally found this a very effective way to keep the mind from wandering.

-We all have to pray to Krsna to help us chant attentively…

H.G. Sankarshan das Adhikari, USA: Wednesday 20 July 2011--Attuned to the Underlying Divinity of Existence--and--Importance of Full Moon in July?

A daily broadcast of the Ultimate Self Realization Course Wednesday 20 July 2011 The Supreme Personality of Godhead, Lord Sri Krishna, and His eternal consort, Srimati Radharani are enjoying transcendental pastimes in the topmost planet of the spiritual world, Sri Goloka Vrindavan. They are beckoning us to rejoin them. (Click on photo to see a larger image.) Our Mission: To help everyone awaken their original Krishna consciousness, which is eternal, full of knowledge and full of bliss. Such a global awakening will, in one stroke, solve all the problems of the world society bringing in a new era of unprecedented peace and prosperity for all. May that day, which the world so desperately needs, come very soon. We request you to participate in this mission by reviving your dormant Krishna consciousness and assisting us in spreading this science all over the world. Dedicated with love to ISKCON Founder-Acharya: His Divine Grace A.C. Bhaktivedanta Swami Prabhupada, our beloved spiritual master, and to you, our dear readers. Today's Thought: Attuned to the Underlying Divinity of Existence Uploaded from Bhaktivedanta Ashram, Austin, Texas USA Life is not based on an empty, meaningless void. If it were how, could there be so many beautiful, wondrous things to experience in this world? The splendor we sometimes experience gives us a hint or an indication of the underlying marvelous divine essence which pervades this experience that we call life. Those who are thoughtful do not dedicate their lives in the vain pursuit of temporary sense gratification. They instead focus their energies on attaining the beatitude which comes from being fully attuned to the divine in all times, places, and circumstances. This divine state of consciousness is known as Krishna consciousness. Sankarshan Das Adhikari Srila Prabhupada Connects with Krishna By Chanting Hare Krishna Mahamantra Japa http://www.backtohome.com/images/Prabhupada/prabhupada_japa.jpg Answers by Citing the Vedic Version: Question: Importance of Full Moon in July? Every day I read your letters posted online. I believe that what you do is great. People like you are more than just a devotee, more than gurus. Someone told me that in the month of July the full moon was a very important event for the Hindus. Can you tell me why? Christiane Answer: The Appearance Day of Srila Vyasadeva I am happy that you are appreciating my humble attempt to spread Krishna consciousness all over the world. Regarding what you perceive as my greatness, kindly note that I am nothing more than a humble servant of my spiritual master, His Divine Grace A.C. Bhaktivedanta Swami Prabhupada. I cannot take credit for whatever good qualities you may see in me since if I have any good qualities at all they are simply a reflection of Srila Prabhupada's unlimitedly great saintly qualities. Therefore I accept your appreciation and pass it on to my beloved spiritual master. This year the full moon day in July is significant because it is the appearance day of Srila Vyasadeva, the literary incarnation of God. We are eternally indebted to him for giving us the Vedic wisdom. He is worshipable and the spiritual master is also worshipable because he is the representative of Srila Vyasadeva. Therefore it is customary for Hindus to worship all spiritual masters on this day. However, the more appropriate and personal worship for a particular spiritual master is to worship him on the actual day of his appearance in this world. This worship is known as Vyasa Puja, the worship of Vyasadeva, because by worshipping the spiritual master who represents Vyasadeva, we are automatically also worshipping Srila Vyasadeva. Vraja Kishor, JP: A Spiritual Singularity of Oneness

Vishnu sahasranama manuscript, ca 1690. Vishnu...

Image via Wikipedia

When we are guided to see all the differently manifested living beings on one common platform, even when they are expanded in so many different ways, then we attain spiritual realization.

- Bhagavad Gita 13.31

All the acaryas’ commentaries answer one quesion: “what do you mean all the living beings are eka-stham, they are all one?”

Al the acaryas explain that eka-stham means that they all come from the same “place.” All living entities are fragments of Krsna-shakti. In this sense we all are one – we all have a common origin.

This is our oneness, which exists even in a liberated condition, but there is also a type of oneness that is material. In that sense eka-stham refers to pradhan – the prakriti or energy of Vishnu which causes the manifestation of the material world.

Vishnu generates the Pradhana, and then infuses it with jiva souls (similar to the conception of babies in a womb). This “womb” of the material universe is the “singularity” (eka-stham) scientists are referring to when they trace back the origin of the universe via empirical methods. All living entities enter into this one condition when they are destroyed. When the universe is periodically destroyed – all living entities enter into a singularity (eka-stham) and thus attain a oneness.

But this oneness also remains even when the universe is manifested and alive (vistaram). We all come from and return to the same “womb.”

We should try to see this (pashyati). But it is beyond the range of empirical senses to directly see, because the singularity is by definition beyond the range of empirical laws and definitions. Therefore Krsna does not say to “see it” (pashyati) he says to “be guided to see it.” (anupashyati). Our empirical senses must be extended past their normal operating range via the disciplines of yoga and shastra-svadhyaya (mental discipline and deep study of the scriptures left by persons who have gone beyond empirical limits).

When our vision is thus enhanced and we can see the oneness of all living beings, what happens? Brahma sampadyate tadaa - then you become spiritual.

Japa Group: The 10 Offenses Pt.1

To blaspheme devotees who have dedicated their lives to chanting the holy name of the Lord. The holy name, who is identical with Krsna, will never tolerate such blasphemous activities.

A sadhu is anyone who is surrendering to Krishna. One who shows gross irreverence or disrespect to those devotees who have dedicated their lives to Krishna is compared to a mad elephant (hati mata), which comes and tramples the creeper of devotion.

Examples of criticising a devotee:

  • He has a lower social status
  • His manners are not yet so polished
  • He eats too much prasadam
  • He had previously had very bad habits
  • He has been weak and temporarily gave up devotional service
A devotee should be like the honey bee that always looks for the nectar and not like the fly that always looks for stool or open sores. One associates with whatever qualities he focuses on, and thus he cultivates those qualities.

How to counter-act the offence - Humbly approach that devotee, offer obeisances, and ask forgiveness.

H.H. Prahladananda Swami: Lecture – SB 6.5.19 Hairy Rishi’s Razor 6-25-2011 – Video

Lecture on the Srimad Bhagavatam 6.5.19 titled “Hairy Rishi’s Razor” given on 25 June, 2011 in Zagreb, Croatia.

Srimad Bhagavatam 6.5.19

kala-cakram bhrami tikshnam

sarvam nishkarshayaj jagat

svatantram abudhasyeha

kim asat-karmabhir bhavet

TRANSLATION

[Narada Muni had spoken of a physical object made of sharp blades and thunderbolts. The Haryasvas understood this allegory as follows.] Eternal time moves very sharply, as if made of razors and thunderbolts. Uninterrupted and fully independent, it drives the activities of the entire world. If one does not try to study the eternal element of time, what benefit can he derive from performing temporary material activities?

PURPORT

This verse explains the words kshaura-pavyam svayam bhrami, which especially refer to the orbit of eternal time. It is said that time and tide wait for no man. According to the moral instructions of the great politician Canakya Pandita:

ayushah kshana eko ‘pi

na labhyah svarna-kotibhih

na cen nirarthakam nitih

ka ca hanis tato ‘dhika

Even a moment of one’s lifetime could not be returned in exchange for millions of dollars. Therefore one should consider how much loss one suffers if he wastes even a moment of his life for nothing. Living like an animal, not understanding the goal of life, one foolishly thinks that there is no eternity and that his life span of fifty, sixty, or, at the most, one hundred years, is everything. This is the greatest foolishness. Time is eternal, and in the material world one passes through different phases of his eternal life. Time is compared herein to a sharp razor. A razor is meant to shave the hair from one’s face, but if not carefully handled, the razor will cause disaster. One is advised not to create a disaster by misusing his lifetime. One should be extremely careful to utilize the span of his life for spiritual realization, or Krishna consciousness.

Subhavilasa das ACBSP, Toronto, CA: Honoring the disappearance day of Srila Gopala Bhatta Goswami

Today is the disappearance day of Srila Gopala Bhatta Goswami and to honor him, we have edited an article written earlier this year glorifying this great Vaishnava personality.
Picture
Srila Gopala Bhatta Goswami and is especially important  in our Brahma Madhava Gaudiya Vaishnava Samradaya tradition. Srila Gopala Bhatta Goswami is one of the Six Goswamis of Vrindavan who wrote extensively and formalized the scriptural understandings and philosophical basis of our Sampradaya tradition.

Srila Gopala Bhatta Goswami met Sri Chaitanya Mahaprabu when he was a young boy. When Sri Chaitanya Mahaprabhu was about to leave Gopala Bhatta became very disheartened and to pacify him the Lord stayed and gave him and his family direct association for some more time.

Srila Gopala Bhatta Goswami had the spirtual realization that Sri Chaitanya Mahaprabhu was none other than Krishna Himself and at wanted to go to Vrindavan. However, Sri Chaitanya Mahaprabhu told him to stay and first carry out his duties towards his parents.

Eventually Srila Gopala Bhatta Goswami did go to Vrindavana where he wrote including assisting Srila Sanatana Goswami with the much celebrated writing of Hari Bhakti Vilasa. Srila Gopala Bhatta Goswami established the Sri Radha Raman Temple in Vrindavan and once you see Sri Radha Raman Devji, you truly lose your heart in Vrindavan.  A picture and some of the nectar of of Sri Radha Raman Devji's appearance can be found below.

Jaya Srila Gopala Bhatta Goswami!

Picture
When Srila Gopal Bhatta Goswami was visiting the pilgrimage centers of northern India, he found a Shalagram Sila on the banks of the Gandaki River. He took the worshipable stone form and carried it with him wherever he went, attending to it as a Vrajendranandan Krishna Himself.

Srila Gopal Bhatta Goswami used to daily worship twelve Shalagrams. He developed a desire to serve the Lord in the form of a deity, thinking that in this way he would be able to worship him in a much better way. The Lord within his heart knew his feelings. Through a rich merchant, he was provided with many beautiful items used in the worship of the deity, such as ornaments and clothes, sent to him. Gopal began to worry that all these beautiful objects would be wasted because there was no way that he could use them unless he had a deity in human form. That night, he put the Shalagrams to rest and in the morning he saw that one of them had been transformed into the Radha Raman deity.

The Shalagram Silas had transformed itself into Radha Raman to fulfill the wish of his devotee. This deity stands alone without any form of Radha standing by His side. Instead,  a symbol of Radharani is placed on His left side.

When Rupa and Sanatan heard that Krishna had so mercifully appeared to Gopal Bhatta, they immediately came with the other devotees for darshan, and when they saw him, they were ecstatic with love. To this day Radha Raman is worshiped by his devotees and an unbroken and the descedents of Srila Gopala Bhatta Goswami's disciple.  The Radha Raman temple is considered one of the most important in Vrindavan and in this temple you cannot only get darshan of Sri Radha Raman but also original artifacts that Sri Chaitanya Mahaprabhu sent for Srila Gopala Bhatta Goswami.

Sri Radha Raman ki jaya!
Srila Gopala Bhatta Goswami ki jaya!

H.H. Prahladananda Swami: Lecture – BG 7.9 Superficially Super Sized 6-24-2011 – Video

Lecture on Bhagavad Gita 7.9 titled “Superficially Super Sized” given on June 24, 2011 in Zagreb, Croatia.

Bhagavad-gita As It Is 7.9

punyo gandhah prithivyam ca

tejas casmi vibhavasau

jivanam sarva-bhuteshu

tapas casmi tapasvishu

TRANSLATION

I am the original fragrance of the earth, and I am the heat in fire. I am the life of all that lives, and I am the penances of all ascetics.

PURPORT

Punya means that which is not decomposed; punya is original. Everything in the material world has a certain flavor or fragrance, as the flavor and fragrance in a flower, or in the earth, in water, in fire, in air, etc. The uncontaminated flavor, the original flavor, which permeates everything, is Krishna. Similarly, everything has a particular original taste, and this taste can be changed by the mixture of chemicals. So everything original has some smell, some fragrance, and some taste. Vibhavasu means fire. Without fire we cannot run factories, we cannot cook, etc., and that fire is Krishna. The heat in the fire is Krishna. According to Vedic medicine, indigestion is due to a low temperature in the belly. So even for digestion fire is needed. In Krishna consciousness we become aware that earth, water, fire, air and every active principle, all chemicals and all material elements are due to Krishna. The duration of man’s life is also due to Krishna. Therefore by the grace of Krishna, man can prolong his life or diminish it. So Krishna consciousness is active in every sphere.

Akrura das, Gita Coaching: GITA COACHING MODEL

The most exciting part for me in helping devotees succeed is discovering their worth and potential, and discovering with them new possibilities, advantages, opportunities, options and solutions. Gita Coaching process does not work on a devotee, but works for him and with him.

On a practical side, Gita Coaching is a weekly or a fortnightly, focused conversation (face-to-face or on the phone), that helps you clarify what you want, make an inspiring plan and take dynamic, intelligent action. It is focused on you and your needs, your goals, and your success. A coach will help you see and focus on what you can be rather than what you are.

We use this simple GITA coaching Model as a framework for coaching:

Goals – Ideas – Tests – Action

Goals: we ask you to choose an important area of your life you want to work on and write down goals you want to achieve in that area.

Ideas: we ask you to choose one goal you would like to work on right now and find spiritual instructions and, if needed, professional knowledge that will help you achieve it.

Tests: we ask you to write down what internal and external tests or obstacles you have to pass in order to achieve it.

Action: we ask you to write down a weekly action plan to start moving towards achieving your goal.

New Vrindavan, USA: Devotee Profile: Shanka Das

His Grace Shanka Das ACBSP
“Srila Prabhupada said that devotional service rendered in a Holy Dham like New Vrindaban is 1,000 times more potent than devotional service rendered anywhere else,” said Shanka dasa, New Vrindaban’s Kitchen Manager and Head Cook since 2001. “So I try to engage as many guests as possible in the kitchen chopping vegetables, making bread, and other services.”

Shanka received initiation from Srila Prabhupada in 1973 and later served Srila Prabhupada personally in Mumbai. “Every day, I used to make a flower garland and give it to him for Guru Puja,” remembers Shanka. One day, after being chastised by his spiritual master for a mistake, Shanka felt so disheartened that he did not give Srila Prabhupada a flower garland that day. Instead, he asked another devotee to give the garland to Srila Prabhupada. Noticing Shanka’s absence, Srila Prabhupada immediately asked, “Where’s my flower boy?” The next day, Shanka happily resumed his service.

Thirty years later, even though his service has changed, Shanka is still happy to be serving Srila Prabhupada. “I get pleasure from seeing that all the guests get Krishna prasad,” he explained. “Some of the guests tell me that they come back every year because the prasad is so good.”

Shanka invites everyone to render service in the Holy Dham. During your next visit to New Vrindaban, please take advantage of the opportunity to spend a few minutes or a few hours in the kitchen with Shanka.

19/07/2011

"Lord Nityananda is very dear to Sriman Gauranga Mahaprabhu. He always does good to the whole universe. He is always supremely blissful. He is the embodiment of supreme happiness and blissfulness. He comes to this material world in this Kali-yuga to deliver the sinful persons. There is no limit to His mercy."

(Sri-Nityanandastaka by Srila Gour Govinda Swami)

There is no limit to the mercy They bestow daily through Their darsana.
