H.G. Sankarshan das Adhikari, USA: Friday 13 May 2011--Keep Your Life as Simple as Possible--and--Better to Work or to Renounce Work?
A daily broadcast of the Ultimate Self Realization Course(tm) Friday 13 May 2011 The Supreme Personality of Godhead, Lord Sri Krishna, and His eternal consort, Srimati Radharani are enjoying transcendental pastimes in the topmost planet of the spiritual world, Sri Goloka Vrindavan. They are beckoning us to rejoin them. (Click on photo to see a larger image.) Our Mission: To help everyone awaken their original Krishna consciousness, which is eternal, full of knowledge and full of bliss. Such a global awakening will, in one stroke, solve all the problems of the world society bringing in a new era of unprecedented peace and prosperity for all. May that day, which the world so desperately needs, come very soon. We request you to participate in this mission by reviving your dormant Krishna consciousness and assisting us in spreading this science all over the world. Dedicated with love to ISKCON Founder-Acharya: His Divine Grace A.C. Bhaktivedanta Swami Prabhupada, our beloved spiritual master, and to you, our dear readers. Today's Thought: Keep Your Life as Simple as Possible Uploaded from Bhaktivedanta Ashram--Austin, Texas USA By its very nature material existence is very complex and problematic. We are constantly tormented by so many difficulties such as birth, death, old age and disease. Therefore we should simplify our lives as much as possible by keeping our material arrangements to the bare minimum so that we can free up as much energy as possible to be absorbed in hearing, chanting, and remembering the wondrous Lord Sri Krishna on a regular daily basis. Sankarshan Das Adhikari Focus Your Mind on Krishna as Much as Possible http://www.backtohome.com/images/Krishna_with_cow.bmp Answers According to the Vedic Version: Question: Better to Work or to Renounce Work? Why does Lord Krishna consider working in devotion to be better than the renunciation of work? R.P. Answer: It's Better to Work for Krishna. Working in devotion is better than renunciation of work because the idle mind is the devil's workshop. Since the living entity is active by nature both mentally and physically, to stop acting and stop thinking is an artificial position, which cannot be maintained. Therefore instead of trying to become free from material existence by artificially trying to stop acting and thinking, one can be immediately liberated from material existence simply by engaging in devotional service to Lord Sri Krishna. This is confirmed by Srila Rupa Goswami as follows: h yasya harer dsye karman manas gir nikhilsv apy avasthsu jvan-muktah sa ucyate One who engages in the transcendental service of the Lord in body, mind and word is to be considered liberated in all conditions of material existence.--Bhakti-rasmrta-sindhu 1.2.187 Since even to maintain this material body. work cannot be given up, the best system for both material and spiritual success is to absorb one's life fully in acts of devotion to the Supreme Personality of Godhead, Lord Sri Krishna. H.H. Prahladananda Swami: Lecture – CC Adi 2.91 Ten Subjects Described In Srimad Bhagavatam
CC Ādi 2.91-92: "'Here [in Śrīmad-Bhāgavatam] ten subjects are described: (1) the creation of the ingredients of the cosmos, (2) the creations of Brahmā, (3) the maintenance of the creation, (4) special favor given to the faithful, (5) impetuses for activity, (6) prescribed duties for law-abiding men, (7) a description of the incarnations of the Lord, (8) the winding up of the creation, (9) liberation from gross and subtle material existence, and (10) the ultimate shelter, the Supreme Personality of Godhead. The tenth item is the shelter of all the others. To distinguish this ultimate shelter from the other nine subjects, the mahājanas have described these nine, directly or indirectly, through prayers or direct explanations.'

H.H. Prahladananda Swami: Lecture – CC Adi 2.39-67 The Original Source Of Everything
CC Ādi 2.39: "You are therefore the original Nārāyaṇa. This is one reason; please listen as I state the second.
CC Ādi 2.40: "The direct Lords of the living beings are the puruṣa incarnations. But Your opulence and power are more exalted than Theirs.
CC Ādi 2.41: "Therefore You are the primeval Lord, the original father of everyone. They [the puruṣas] are protectors of the universes by Your power.
CC Ādi 2.42: "Since You protect those who are the shelters of all living beings, You are the original Nārāyaṇa.
CC Ādi 2.43: "O my Lord, O Supreme Personality of Godhead! Kindly hear my third reason. There are countless universes and fathomless transcendental Vaikuṇṭhas.
CC Ādi 2.44: "Both in this material world and in the transcendental world, You see all the deeds of all living beings, in the past, present and future. Since You are the witness of all such deeds, You know the essence of everything.
CC Ādi 2.45: "All the worlds exist because You oversee them. None can live, move or have their being without Your supervision.

Caitanya Mangala, CA, USA: KulimeLA 2009: Krsangi Davis Performing at the Ford Theater in Hollywood
A newly released video of Krsangi Davis performing her “Spark of the Spirit” Dance during the KulimeLA 2009 Gala Evening at the Ford Theater in Hollywood, CA. “A Mosaic of Our Generations” was a night filled with honor, remembrance and celebration.
The main theme for KulimeLA 2009 was to “Honor the Past, Celebrate the Present & Envision the Future.”
To celebrate the 20th anniversary of the Los Angeles Gurukuli Reunion, the John Anson Ford Amphitheater, nestled in the Hollywood Hills, was chosen as an ideal location for Kulis to come together to acknowledge their collective history and appreciate the many accomplishments of the pioneer Gurukulis throughout the past two decades.
Dressed in formal and elegant attire, approximately one thousand Vaishnavas gathered to walk the red carpet and participate in an amazing evening that beautifully showcased “A Mosaic of Our Generations.”
CLICK HERE to check out the growing Kuli Mela video and audio selections on Krishna.com.
In the ancient Sanskrit language, “Kuli” refers to a member of a “Community” and “Mela” means “Festive Gathering.” Combined, “Kuli Mela” tranforms into “A Celebration of Community.”
The Kuli Mela Association is a 501(C)(3) non-profit organization whose mission is to connect our diverse and dynamic global community. We believe that by encouraging each other along our individual paths and by serving together in our shared goals we can make a positive difference in the world.

Australian News: Our Humble Request
Dear Friends
This year we are celebrating the 40th anniversary of Srila Prabhupada’s first visit to Australia. After arriving in Sydney in May 1971 Srila Prabhupada installed our beloved deities of Sri Sri Radha Gopinatha. That was the official start of ISKCON in Australia.
On May 21 & 22 we are going to have a grand celebration to commemorate these two historical events. We are expecting a hundred of initiated disciples of Srila Prabhupada as well as many other devotees from across Australia arriving for this special occasion. This weekend will be packed with different attractions and will provide to us, Sydney devotees, with great opportunities to serve our guests and associate with so many wonderful souls.
As you can imagine, event like this will require a lot of cooperative work and effort. We, as the hosts of the celebrations, want to make sure that each and every of our guests will leave Sydney Temple with wonderful memories.
We therefore humbly request you to help us in organising these 40th anniversary celebrations. We will require a variety of service across the whole weekend, as well as in days leading up to and time after the festival.
Please contact us if you are willing to offer your time and skills to Sri Sri Radha Gopinatha and serve Them during Their 40th anniversary.
If you have volunteered before, and you’re aware of what you would like to do, then just suggest the area you’d like to be assigned to. Otherwise we will propose the services we require help with the most. Please specify your availability, indicating date and time you’re accessible. We will need help during the entire period between 16-24 of May. The main focus is on the 21 and 22 of May, but if you are available before, or after the festival, we will of course be happy to get your help.

Bharatavarsa.net: Bhakti Vikasa Swami: everyone should be strong
You ask me how to recruit strong devotees to come there. You have to prepare strong devotees, not import them. You yourself become strong devotees and teach others by your example. Importation is not a good plan; everyone should be strong by behavior and action.

Subhavilasa das ACBSP, Toronto, CA: The Appearance Day of Srimati Sita Devi
Yesterday was the auspicious appearance day of Srimati Sita Devi. Of course the story of Lord Ram and Sita is well know and has been reenacted many times on various temple stages. So today's post focus on the actual appearance day of Srimati Sita Devi and some childhood pastimes which would reveal the glories of Sita Maharani.Janaka maharaj was ploughing a piece of land and then to prepare it for conducting a yajna. He unearthed a golden casket in which he found a beautiful girl and was overjoyed. A land ploughed by the yoke is called 'Sita', and so he named the baby as Sita.
Sita grew up and played in the palace of Janakaraj. She became well known for her beauty as well as her devotion. She could often be seen absorbed in the Deity of the Lord of the Surya-vamsa. She would sometimes lovingly enact the pastimes of the various forms of the Lord and relish His pastimes. In this way she revealed to those close to her that she was no ordinary young girl.
One day the revered sage Parashurama came to visit king Janaka. He carried a bow with him. He left it at the doorstep of the royal hall and went inside. Sita saw the bow, ran to it and began playing with it as if it was a play-horse. Only those with great physical strength and daring could lift and handle the 'Vaishnava' bow. When Parashurama came out, the bow was missing. Ordinary persons could not lift it with ease and he, curiously looking around, spotted Sita playing with it as if it was a play-horse. The sage and the king were astonished.
In Sri Janakatayane it states,
Oh daughter of Janaka, the blessed souls of refugees!
Oh Consort of Sri Raghu Rama, bedecked with shining gem-ornaments!
Pray, protect me always!
You are the wind that destroys the clouds of demons like the hundreds-headed Ravana.
You are the indweller in the hearts of the devotees.
Your Feet shine with the lustre of gems set in the crown of Indra.

Kripamoya dasa, UK: Sri Lakshmi Nrsimha Karavalamba Stotram
Here are the Sanskrit and English Lyrics of Sri Lakshmi Narasimha Karavalamba Stotram – the Lakshmi Nrsimha Prayer said to be composed by Adi Shankaracarya. My apologies for any imperfections in the English translation. You can compare the lyrics with the song by watching the video:
Please understand that this is for your interest only. I do not endorse the Advaita philosophy of Adi Shankaracarya as the complete understanding of Vedanta. But I found it ironic that when he really needed help, the great preacher of impersonalism called upon the help of Nrsimha.

Caitanya Mangala, CA, USA: KulimeLA 2009: Chaitanya-Nitai Performing at the Ford Theater in Hollywood
A newly released video of Chaytanya-Nitai performing her original song during the KulimeLA 2009 Gala Evening at the Ford Theater in Hollywood, CA. She dedicated her song to the Pioneer Kulis “who paved the way.” “A Mosaic of Our Generations” was a night filled with honor, remembrance and celebration.

H.H. Satsvarupa das Goswami (Ret.): 308—Poem for May 12
5:01 A.M.
A Writer of Pieces
New format—I will begin with a poem written on the day of its printing. Then I will print random excerpts of books I have printed over the last 35 years. I hope this variety will be pleasing.
Poem for May 12
I endured a night of
headache and woke at 12:30
and took a med. Baladeva
reprimanded me for getting up
too early, but I like to begin
my japa by 2:00 A.M.
It’s better that way, and
then I can begin the poem.In our reading of Cc.
Lord Caitanya is teaching
how the pure soul becomes
bewildered by maya whose
business is to make the living
entity think he is the product of
the material energy. Forgetting
Krishna, he suffers in many ways.
Reading useless literature
doesn’t help.When I woke up I saw
a police car on the road
with flashing lights.
He was checking out a
driver for violations.
I feared when I turned on
my light he might knock
on our door and ask
me why I was up
so early.In the autobiog. yesterday
I wrote of Prabhupada’s contribution of writing books.
I described his work and
said it would convince anyone
to become a devotee of
Krishna and stave off
the onslaught of atheism
so predominant in our
age.My little life is
so small I don’t find
much to say, just
bare bones of a
quiet day. I sing
my creative energy
in a lyric of pure
freedom meant to
please music lovers
if there are any still
remaining in the world.
I make my song because
I am like the predawn
birds, and I have the urge
to play like the melodists
of jazz.• Email to a friend • •
H.H. Satsvarupa das Goswami (Ret.): OLD FRIENDS
From Prabhupada Meditations, Volume III
Remembering Prabhupada
“When I was eight years old and in the fourth grade of elementary school, Miss Williams taught us a good lesson about forgetfulness. Some students had forgotten to do their homework, so she wrote the word ‘FORGET’ on the blackboard in very large letters. She then drew many arrows shooting at the word. It was a bad thing to forget. Later, Miss Williams covered up that section of the blackboard with a map of the United States. We all forgot what was underneath, but at the end of the year she removed the map and there it was—FORGET.
“Some forgetting is good. Prabhupada says, ‘We have to forgive and forget, or how can we live?’ Forget grudges and forgive minor offenses that people may commit against us. We should never forget Krishna, however, and we should always shoot arrows at our forgetfulness of Prabhupada. According to the scriptures, even a moment’s forgetfulness of the Lord and His pure devotee is the greatest loss .
“How do I remember Prabhupada? First of all, I remember that there was (and is) such a person as Prabhupada. Descartes said, ‘I think, therefore I am.’ That was his bottom line of truth. Our bottom line is, ‘I remember Prabhupada, therefore I am.’ I am now in spiritual life because my spiritual master delivered me from darkness. I do not forget that. I remember him and follow him.
“Our remembrance of Srila Prabhupada is more than nostalgia for a wonderful person who was here but who is now gone. Remembering Prabhupada is the cutting edge of our life at every moment. Bhaktisiddhanta Sarasvati Thakura said that when one forgets his guru, then all one thinks of is, ‘I run in a hurry for my bath. I become busy for preventing a cold. I run after other occupations different from the service of Sri Gurudeva.’ Basic remembrance of Prabhupada refers to the promises we made him at our initiations—the four rules and sixteen rounds and other obligations. We aspire to be Krishna conscious and to read Bhagavad-gita and his other books. We aspire to serve among his devotees.
“When we remember him in personal ways, that is the sweetness which makes life worth living. We may say duty is enough, but who does not crave joy, ‘the nectar for which we are always anxious?’
“I remember the soft saffron on Prabhupada’s body. I sense his stature. He was not tall or fat, but neither do we think of him as ‘gaunt.’ None of these words seem to apply. We met him in his seventieth year, yet we remember his graceful form. The movements of his fingers, hands, wrists, never lost grace, never slowed down or showed signs of palsy. He extended his pinky in a delicate way when putting on tilaka, and his fingers did their ‘dance’ of spontaneous mudras while he lectured. The rest of Prabhupada’s body was also graceful. Grace is not possessed only by a youngster on a trampoline or by a ballet dancer leaping. Prabhupada was graceful in the way he used his cane and the way he put his feet forward when he walked briskly. He was graceful in the way he turned to someone who called his name. He opened and closed books and picked up objects from his desk in the same flowing way.
“When Prabhupada went on a morning walk, often a group of latecomers would catch up to him. Prabhupada turned and waited as they came forward happily and submissively. We liked being his disciples. His personal command and protection were so charming that it kept scores of devotees eager to follow him.
“Even if Prabhupada were to do something that might be considered ungraceful, our hearts went out to him with affection and protection. If Prabhupada stumbled on a rock in his path, we would not suddenly think, ‘Oh, this is not graceful.’ If a pretty girl suddenly bumps into a wall or gets her hat knocked forward, we may feel scorn and some humor, ‘Just see, the beautiful girl has lost her poise in the light of harsh reality.’ However, if Prabhupada bumped up against a material edge, we were hurt and worried. We rushed forward to help. That is what I mean by seeing him with love.
“We were not blind to the fact that Prabhupada was growing old, or that he was becoming ill and had to confront some awkward moments in the material world. These things, though, did not diminish the pure relationship of guru and disciple. Prabhupada had proven hundreds of times that he was the empowered representative of Krishna. He delivered us and continued to deliver us from maya by his many speeches and purports. He demonstrated his self-sacrifice by traveling many times around the world, always extending himself to help people. There seemed to be no reward for him, and there was nothing further he that had to prove. Still, he served the devotees and served the people of this world on behalf of Krishna. Whatever he did, nothing changed our fixed opinion of him as our worshipable guru.”
From In Praise of the Mahajanas and Other Poems (1983)
“Svayambhuva Manu
“Empowered energy of Hari,
to protect the virtuous and kill the demons,
he moves with the power of combined gods,
sun, fire, wind, punishment, piety,
and directly brings the will of Vishnu
to the entire earth and populace.Nowhere to be found such kings today?
Yet if the people want it,
by proper training,
the ksatriyas can return,
but if it’s sin you cherish in your secular state,
then keep the rule by rascals,
and thus we have our pandemonium state.Unlike the Kumaras,
he obeyed Lord Brahma
when asked to marry
for the purpose of beginning the world.
Over thousands of years he never grew weary,
his secret was ascetic devotion.A Krishna-conscious king—
bold and fierce in military might
yet submissive to the right
of the brahmanas.
The demons
saw a lion in rage, but like a lamb
he approached the sage Kardama
and asked him to please
accept a perfect wife,
Manu’s daughter, Devahuti.Although amidst riches
in his ksatriya palace,
he never succumbed
to lust, greed or malice.
The earth wails today
and its people are devoured
for the lack of such a king.
Our prayers and endeavors
are for his return—
the ushering in of bhagavat-dharma,
led by its protector,
a royal sage.From Spiritualized Dictionary
“Overtone
“‘1. One of the constituent higher tones that, with the fundamental, comprise a musical tone; HARMONIC. 2. The color of the light reflected (as by a paint or varnish film) 3. A secondary or accompanying effect, quality or meaning usually of subtle or elusive character; IMPLICATION, SUGGESTION [An overtone, an aftertaste, a flavor that lingers in the mind].’
“Tones and overtones—it’s nice to have subtleties to create harmonics. Krishna consciousness is complicated like that too. The harmonics in spiritual life are created by tones and overtones, obvious and subtle meanings. It’s not complicated in the sense of a knot that needs to be untied, but in a pleasantly-layered way.
“For example, Balarama is Krishna’s servant, but there is an overtone of being Krishna’s older brother. Each group of gopis has different tones in their dealings with Krishna, and as the groups come together and separate, the groups blend and mix and then separate again. In this way, an unlimited variety of moods and exchanges are created. In our neophyte stage, we may not understand the richness of this variety, but as we advance and find our own love for Krishna, we will begin to understand more the subtlety of exchange. When the tones are combined properly in pure devotional service, the mixtures are beautiful. When they are not, it’s called rasa-bhasa, the overlapping of mellows that produces a discordant effect. Maternal affection for Krishna doesn’t mix properly with conjugal affection, for example. And there are other examples.
“Even in our life in this world, we can see this harmonic or discordant mixing. Suffering is often mixed with relief, and happiness contains an overtone of sadness. Life is bittersweet. In the absolute world, bitter and sweet do not conflict because Krishna is the master symphonic director.
“Krishna directs the entire material creation, but He keeps His distance from its workings because the jivas in the material world are not responsive. In an orchestra, the musicians follow even the most subtle hints and gestures in order to bring out the pathos, then the joy, the fortissimo, then the softness of the music. In the material world, the jivas do not look to Krishna for their direction. Therefore Krishna turns them over to the directress of this sphere. And she doesn’t use a baton to direct them, but a three-pronged fork made of the material modes.
“In the spiritual world, however, the jivas are different. They have surrendered everything to Krishna’s direction, to Krishna’s pleasure. Krishna doesn’t use a baton there either, He uses His eyebrows or His smile or the gestures of His eyes. The rasa dance is the apex of Krishna’s directions, and the gopis follow His slightest indication. Krishna doesn’t have to give orders in the spiritual world. He is so attractive to the devotees that they are mad with the desire to serve Him. The cowherd boys know when to fan Him, when to massage Him, and when to challenge Him to a wrestling match. They are expert. When they tell Krishna they are hungry, it is because they think Krishna might be hungry. By seeming to allow Krishna to serve them, they are able to give Him the highest pleasure. Krishna likes to orchestrate happiness in the hearts of His devotees.
“The image of Krishna as symphonic director is appropriate. When Lord Brahma returned the stolen calves and cowherd boys, Krishna displayed His Vishnu forms. Around each Vishnu form, Brahmas, Sivas, demigods and even insignificant living beings were dancing, accompanied by various kinds of music, and worshiping Lord Vishnu. The entire universe—all existence—is a kind of dance. Only in the spiritual world, however, are the devotees attuned to Krishna’s harmonies and overtones and able to play with Him. In this way they create the different layers and blends of feelings that comprise ananda.”

Giridhari das, Brasilia, Brazil: Angry Birds™ Yoga – How to Eliminate the Green Pigs in Your Life, Final Part
This is the fifth and final part of the “Angry Birds™ Yoga” series. Click here for Part I, here for Part II, here for Part III and here for Part IV.
The Green Pigs
The Green Pigs are your enemies in life. Enemies who steal your happiness and your peace of mind, who trick you into living an unfulfilled life, and who cheat you out of the unlimited greatness you deserve.
The Small Pigs are those little things we do that make our lives worse, including: prolonging those habits we know to be bad, overworking, lying, over-eating, under-sleeping, long distance commuting to work, and not getting enough fresh air and contact with nature. It’s fairly easy to eliminate these Small Green Pigs if you take your wellbeing seriously.
The larger Green Pigs are greed, lust, madness, hatred, illusion, arrogance, envy and fear. Often they are further protected by helmets, hard-hats, sombreros, etc! These are very, very difficult to defeat. Only the Angry Birds™ Yoga pros have a chance to defeat them all. The first step in eliminating them from your life, though, is just being aware of them – “know thy enemy.” Just being aware of them and recognizing how they bring you misery is a significant part of the process. People often think these qualities are bad for the victims, but actually the misery starts with the perpetrator. Being in a greedy, hateful, arrogant, etc. state of mind is in itself miserable and frustrating, what to speak of the awful results that will come to a person who acts out these states, and to the other people around him or her.
The Boss and King Pigs represent the very root of all our suffering: ignorance. Ignorance of our true nature, ignorance of what our true priorities are, ignorance of where we came from and where we’re going, ignorance of what we should do with our life, and ignorance of the divine – these lead to all the other problems.
The Bricks
It’s hard enough eliminating the Green Pigs when they are fully exposed, but often they are further covered by bricks of three sorts.
The Glass Brick represents laziness. Most of us are unbelievably lazy when it comes to working on being a better person or on self-realization. If we don’t overcome this laziness, there is no hope for happiness. This has nothing to do with regular laziness. You can be a go-getter, hard-working rat race master and still be totally lazy when it comes to working on becoming a better person.
The Wood Brick represents false precepts and false concepts. We plan our whole life on erroneous notions of who we are and what’s good for us. We so often strive for the useless, ignore the essential and basically drive ourselves into a ditch of mediocrity and frustration.
The Stone Brick represents lack of mental clarity, confusion. Bad lifestyle choices, pollution, noise and being too busy will cloud our mind and keep us dull and confused. In such a state, what hope do we have of being happy?
The Slingshot
The Sligshot is our life force, called prana in the Indian tradition and qi (chi) in the Chinese tradition. Our life force is limited. We only have so much time, so much intelligence, so much physical and mental energy. We have to use it wisely. We have to direct our life properly. We have to aim well, otherwise there is no chance we’ll do our best in life. The little things matter. Life is built from one action to another, from one word to another – right now.
Parting Words
By seeking wisdom (White Bird) and using your intelligence (Yellow Bird), by remembering your true nature (Blue Bird), by practicing meditation (Black Bird), living a noble life (Boomerang Bird), controlling your senses, starting with the tongue (Red Bird), with great determination (Big Red Bird) and last, but not least, seeking always the help of the Divine (the Mighty Eagle), you can blast away the Green Pigs of destructive mentality and lead a truly blissful and enlightened life!
I hope this brief presentation of Angry Birds™ Yoga has been helpful. If you want to learn more about the topics covered here, get in touch with me. It will be my pleasure to discuss them with you.

Dandavats.com: Summer in Paradise
By Shyamsunder- Priya das
I am 14 and I rarely go to a temple except of course before exams, to pray to get good marks. Well it all started like this, I was as usual busy playing game on my Computer and my Mom was in the kitchen cooking, my father came in saying he came across this Bhakti Yoga Residential summer camp pamphlet at the RTC Complex and both my parents buried themselves into it, I was unaffected until they told me they have decided I will be going there. I immediately protested ” I am not going anywhere”

Sikhi Mahiti das: We have reached another ISKCON milestone, 35 years of Panihati festival at ISKCON Atlanta! The first Panihati Festival was celebrated at ISKCON Atlanta in 1976. There have been memorable events since then. Most recently, HH Jayapataka Swami attending the festival after his devastating stroke in 2009. When we asked about how to run the festival without his presences, he stated "I have never missed a Panihati festival and I don't plan on missing one now". Which brings us to the next milestone

Committed Couples
Moundsville, West Virginia
There have been alot of talking about parenting, coupling, and overall healthy relationships. Husbands and wives have united here at ISKCON's Moundsville country retreat, New Vrndavan, to take advantage of the seminars, a spin-off of "The Festival of Inspiration." These seminars are basically a reinforcement of the family unit. Called the Grhasta Vision Team these successful couples from various locations in North America do not exactly renew their marriage vows from decades past but they are here priming themselves for marriage counselling to others.
There is a great need-an understatement.
My personal admiration goes out to the cause and to those who have taken it up. It is a brave challenge. The war on the family is on. The state of ruined relationships that had potential to survive is disheartening. However, in spiritual circles such as the Grhasta group (grhasta meaning married person) is created.
This past weekend, and the follow up last two days have been encouraging for hopeful future couples as mentors sharpened their tools. I have sat in on some of these seminars as time allows and have come out feeling that warriors against the weakening of families are now well prepared.
I have made one observation about a couple I adore who are just totally committed to each other. I see them ever day in the waking hours as I do my walk, a loop around the lake.
This morning they were sitting together. Usually he was swimming in that very lake at whose edge they live. He enjoys the swim, actually more of a glide, while she is under a tree resting. He is most patient and she, maybe more. There on a pile of her homemade nest she roosts. She's expecting. She's a swan, a white swan and so is he. Each night they rest by each other's side expressing full loyalty.
Good role models, I'd say

According to one’s attitude, Krishna becomes one’s direct adviser, or Krishna becomes unknown. This is not Krishna’s partiality; it is His response to one’s ability to understand Him.

In Order
Wheeling West Virginia
I don't always bother with names to county roads. We just walk them. Today the Miami crew and I took to the curvy northwest direction down a valley. We dropped in at a ghee factory and just beyond that a barn of mature cows and bulls, referred to as "aging cows"
Ghee, cows, country trails, walking. You can't get more satvic (mode of goodness).
For day two of Wheeling our chanting party set oursevles up at a park on the Ohio River. Not only was the spot more pretty than the previous day, people were also pleasant along the natural ambiance. A municipal statue of Walter Reuther, auto union leaders, and father of a friend, Lekhasravanti, looks over the the river.
It was the first time I had a violinst to play along as we broke from sitting. Allan a novice devotee of Puerto Recan decendt played a sweet violin as we passed by the city arena, and entered the "vibrant warehouse district".
I was rather pleased with his sound. It grabbed my attention a tough thing to do especially due to my meticulous nature when doing street chanting. Today as in all times in the public I insisted on a standard of discipline beginning with playing of the instruments to the way of the walking down the street. There must be some formation. I may tend to be a trite artistically militaristic about it. Our devotees are not always too accustomed to the approach.
"Two by two, two lines please." I shouted over their responsive voices to the mantra. Somehow they accepted the command until I must say it again because the lack of order has become a habit.
I believe in "Take order and there will be order."

Feeling Out Wheeling
Wheeling West, Virginia.
"Absence makes the heart grow fonder," was the theme of the class from Canto 10 of the book, Bhagavatam. Dravida, an expert at Sanskrit recitation of spiritual-evolved verses, was the morning's pundit. He affirmed that topic of a lofty nature is interaction between Krishna and His most cherished devotees involves being aware of thier confidentiality but to take a cautious path when entering into such mysteries. Such topics could be taken as mundane affairs and perceived as cheap. The phrase he used to describe premature advances into spiritual confidentiality as "sahajiya" which means easy. In any event Dravida's delivery was insightful.
After the class and a bulky breakfast a small band of pilgrims including myself and a brand new monk from Miami, Allen, set foot on an abandoned road trails in the area-trails that led to more abandonment. Homesteads now left to nature's whim were sights we came upon. Even the home, where our guru, Srila Prabhupada, had stayed in the seventies, still for the most part it remained intact.
Wander we did. Explore also. Plants of numerous kinds intrigued us. Signs of wild life by way of footprints and feces made us aware. People rarely hit the trail of our journey. Tics did land on us and our diligence at flicking off the little unfavorable bugs was a must. They seemed to like my legs. Upon returning for a shower before a chanting party engagement, these lyme disease carriers ended up crawling the with of my dhoti(lower robe). Disposing of them was not easy.
We spanned ten kilometers of bush trekking. And then three more in the city of Wheeling in the shape of a chanting party, caught people's interest. Here also in the city a human being is hard to find. The streets appeared to be abandoned. Motorists were abundent.
As we moved along these streets with our forty-strong chanters, both men and women, I caught at an eye's glance a piece of history from the municipals plaques. Apparently the famous cross country US trekkers Lewis and Clarke camped out here at Wheeling on the Ohio River in 1805. Their adventures were well recorded. Also of interest was that the American Civil War began here in the hills of West Virginia, near this area.
Rich history. Yes. And now Wheeling's downtown maybe all the more rich with some awesome sound vibration in the air.

Sutapa das, BV Manor, UK: Split personality
Many of us on the spiritual path lead double lives. Carefully avoiding the image of a Bible-bashing religious nerd, we often end up hiding our spirituality and even compromising our principles just to fit into the crowd. Initially, people may appreciate the added spiritual dimension to life, but when ones interest grows, commitment deepens and priorities begin to change, that’s when the alarm bells start to ring. Parents are happy with the morality and principles that practice of spirituality brings, but later they fear you may become too detached from the world, lose your drive for success and renounce your duties towards the family. Friends think it’s cool and funky to ’think deeper’, but later they complain that you’ve changed and how your company no longer stimulates them. How do we balance our spiritual journey with our worldly relationships? Is it possible to maintain your principles without becoming a social outcaste?
In the second chapter of the Bhagavad-gita Krishna explains that “what is night for all beings is the time of awakening for the self-controlled; and the time of awakening for all beings is night for the introspective sage.” Once, when asked what the purport of this statement was, Srila Prabhupada replied “they think you are crazy and you think they are crazy!” Materialists look at spiritualists and pity what they see as a conservative life of self denial and childish fairytale. Spiritualists look at materialists and lament their illusory pursuits for pleasure, foreseeing the frustration that comes from seeking substance in the shadow. Everyone has their own take on life. I guess the most important thing for a spiritualist is to come to terms with who they really are. There comes a point when you realize that life is too short to put up false pretenses and masks. If you’re not comfortable with yourself, don’t expect anyone else to be.
Interestingly, as a spiritualist matures, he is not only unaffected by the skepticism of others, but by his conviction and inspiration he can often influence and transform those very same people. Going to a deeper level, we realize we have lots in common with others. Everyone, despite their desires, aspirations and goals in life are all actually looking for the same things – peace, love, achievement, relationships, security etc. The only difference is that we are all looking in different places. In this way, a spiritualist need not see himself as a black sheep, standing out like a sore thumb in society. Rather they can be likened to a drop of red ink thrown into a pool of water – by boldly taking the plunge and confidently expressing themselves, they will colorfully enrich the lives of everyone around them.• Email to a friend • •
Mukunda Charan das, SA: It Is A Shame We Don’t Know Who We Are
‘It is a shame and unfortunate that through our own fault we don’t understand ourselves or know who we are. Wouldn’t it show great ignorance, my daughters, if someone when asked who he was didn’t know, and didn’t know his father or mother or from what country he came from? Well now, if this would be so extremely stupid, we are incomparably more so when we do not strive to know who we are, but limit ourselves to considering only roughly these bodies. Because we have heard and because faith tells us so, we know we have souls. But we seldom consider the precious things that can be found in this soul, or who dwells within it, or its high value. Consequently, little effort is made to preserve its beauty. All our attention is taken up…with these bodies of ours.’

Australian News: Chandana Yatra Mahotsava: A multimedia event
“CHANDANA YATRA MAHOTSAVA” Begins on Akshaya Tritiya 6 May11 for 21 days
by Chandan BhatiaA few years back HH Jaypataka Swami wrote on Chandana Yatra as follows:
In Sri Mayapur Candrodaya Mandir the devotees were observing the charming and beautiful Chandana Yatra festival at ISKCON Sri Mayapur. Every day hundreds of devotees spent some time making sandalwood paste by grinding the wood on a stone grinder. This sandalwood paste is applied to the bodies of Lord Madhava and Nrsimhadeva. Jala-dana festival was also going on—-dripping water on the Shaligram Sila and Tulasi. In the afternoons the original Deities of Sri Sri Radha Madhava were taken to Srila Prabhupada’s Samadhi lake and a beautiful boat festival was observed. The boat was decorated like a silver swan with a temple on it. After the boat pastimes the Sri Sri Radha Madhava were places in a flower house and swung in Jhulan style with devotees chanting and dancing before them. Like this every day of Chandana Yatra is a colorful festival filled with life and joy.
“Chandana yatra” starts on the third lunar day of the waxing moon of Vaisakha month, and continues for twenty days. Lord Jagannatha gave direct instructions to King Indradyumna to perform this festival at this time. Smearing the body of the Lord with ointments is an act of devotion, and the best of ointments is sandalwood paste. Since the month of Vaisakha is very hot in India, the cooling effect of the sandalwood is very pleasing to the body of the Lord.
Sandalwood paste is applied all over the body of Jagannatha leaving only his two eyes visible. The utsava murtis (functional Deities – Vijay utsav) are taken on procession and are placed in a boat in the temple pond. To commemorate this festival, Lord Caitanya also carried out water sports with his devotees.
Akshaya Trutiya tithi marks the beginning of the construction of the Rathas (chariots) for the ceremonial journey and sojourn of Lord Jagannatha, Balabhadra and Subhadra at the Gundicha Temple in Jagannatha Puri for a week.
Akshaya Tritiya:
Chandana yatra starts on this day, which is celebrated as well as the day on which Treta yuga began. Barley, one of the main ingredients for homa, which is the yuga dharma of Treta Yuga, was also created on this day.
Ganga devi also descended to earth on this day. Many common people have special puja on this day. One should bathe in a sacred river, give charity, perform japa and offer barley in a sacred fire, and offer barley preparations to the deity.
Akshaya Tritiya day is the very auspicious day – there’s no inauspiciousness to be found today so even checking muhurthas is considered unnecessary, so auspicious it is. Whatever one does for devotees, and for Krishna that person will get more benefit and it is eternal benefit and never lost. He said one story of a brahmana: there was a brahmana who had a very good wife and was poor. Whatever little money he got would get spent somehow.
Also he did not have children. So under the strong request of his wife he went to Vasishta muni to know the reason for his suffering. Vasishta muni told him that in his previous life he was very rich and also had many children. But he was very stingy, he was not even spending for his own children. This is the reason for his being poor, also without children. Then that brahmana asked Vasishta muni why he got a good wife. So that Muni replied that somehow with some reason, he observed that the vrata of Vaishaka month for the last 5 days. So he got a good wife and also the brahmana birth. Then the muni advised him to follow at least the last 7 days left of Vaishaka month, with devotion to Lord Sri Krishna.
Since that brahmana observed the vrata of Vaishaka month for that at least the left out 7 days, he got sons, he became rich, ultimately he got Love of Godhead and went back to the spiritual world!
It is important to hear such a story/pastimes as this so that at least by hearing this, we engage ourselves in the service of Guru, the Vaishnavas and Krishna. Thus becoming inspired to always render service the devotee is always the beneficiary of such interaction with the Vaishnavas, one’s Guru and Lord Sri Krishna.

SRI SRI RADHA-MADHAVA
“Cintamani Krishna-Vesha”Cintamani Krishna – It refers to nectarean amorous pastimes of Sri Sri Radha & Krishna standing near shore of Yamuna decorated with golden pavements standing with their beautiful ornaments.
“The supreme abode of the Personality of Godhead, Krishna, is described in the Brahma-samhita as cintamani-dhama, a place where all desires are fulfilled. The supreme abode of Lord Krishna known as Goloka Vrindavana is full of palaces made of touchstone. There are also trees which are called “desire trees” that supply any type of eatable upon demand, and there are cows known as surabhi cows which supply a limitless supply of milk. In this abode the Lord is served by hundreds of thousands of goddesses of fortune (Lakshmis), and He is called Govinda, the primal Lord and the cause of all causes. The Lord is accustomed to blow His flute (venum kvanantam). His transcendental form is the most attractive in all the worlds — His eyes are like the lotus petals and the color of His body like clouds. He is so attractive that His beauty excels that of thousands of cupids.”

Vraja Kishor, JP: A Higher Taste
The Sixth Stage of Bhakti Yoga: “Taste”
The heart is like a goldsmith’s forge. Devotional practice is the fire of that forge. Divine love begins as raw gold-ore. I place it into the fire. For a while, it remains cool and solid, but soon the fire begins to melt the pure gold. Becomes molten it begins to gives off a lustrous, beautiful glow. Now I begin to appreciate the beauty of divine love, I begin to develop a “taste” for it.[1]
To get the gold to melt I have to apply steady and intense heat – I have to be fixed in my devotional practices. Thus the stage of Taste comes after Fixation. Sustained deep and sincere devotional practice begins to activate the ore of divine love, and I develop a taste for the beauty of it. I begin to honestly “enjoy” my devotional practices.
Here is an example to illustrate:
The saint Narada said, “When I fixed my mind steadily upon devotional practices I gained an extremely pleasant and purifying taste for them.”[2]
Previously I had to make a strenuous effort to concentrate deeply upon my practices, but now that I enjoy their taste, I concentrate effortlessly without distraction.
Narada describes, “Discussion of their sweetheart Kṛṣṇa flows from their mouths like a river flooding in all directions! Those who drink from this river never tire of it, and are not distracted at all by ordinary hungers, thirsts, fears, etc.”[3]
[1] The Sanskrit term for this stage is ruci. In the most literal sense, ruci means “luster” or “brilliance.” When something is lustrous and beautiful we appreciate it. When we appreciate something we “have a taste for it.”

Devadeva Mirel, Alachua, USA: Wall Mounted Faucets In The Kitchen
Wall mounted kitchen faucets are common in older homes in the UK and Australia. Unfortunately, in the US, most people equate them with utilitarian restaurant kitchens. When I first began remodeling kitchens in 2007, I discovered the apron front sink and the wall mounted glory that is often installed with it. I adore wall mounted faucets on all counts. Elevated from the deck, these faucets are free of gunk coagulating around the flange so there is an instant sanitation boost. Whether done in a Victorian or modern design, the wall mount is an attention getter. Both the sink and the backsplash will attract extra looks, making your clean-up area shine.
Call it Victorian, cottage, French, or farm, the most popular wall mounted kitchen faucets evoke an antique or vintage feel. Often paired with oversized fireclay, soapstone, or cast iron sinks with an apron, this set-up is quaint, calling upon a narrative of simpler, more elegant times. For high end remodels, brands like Rohl and Herbeau often accent a Shaw’s fireclay sink. However, a similar look for less is available with faucet brands such as Kingston Brass or American Standard. Put it with the IKEA Domsjo sink and you are ready to wash.
Minimalist modern kitchens naturally incorporate the sylphlike wall mounted faucet, allowing for a completely clutterless countertop and airy look. Kohler makes a few contributions to this look, including the Karbon–which can read futuristic or steampunk, depending on the finish. Some modern kitchens even use bathroom vessel faucets without swivel spouts. This seems like a sacrifice of function but could work on a small bar or prep sink.
I’ve posted many pictures of wall mounted kitchen faucets over the last couple of years but here are a few more to keep you inspired. We have Victorian, vintage, cottage, and ultra-modern. What look is your favorite?
- Victorian Faucet on Green Mosaic, Cottage Industry Design
- Triple Wall Mount, Cottage Industry Design
- White Farm Sink, Southern Living
- Wall Mounted on Walnut, Henrybuilt
- Faucet on Chalkboard Paint, Bunker Workshop
