Kurma dasa, AU: Ekadasi Coconut Cake
Here's a grain-free cake suitable for ekadasi fasting. It's from "The Book of Egg Free Cakes" By Cintia Stammers. I have not cooked it myself but I have heard from good cake makers that it works well.
(not a photo of this cake, but an impetus to make it)
1 1/4 cups milk powder, 1 1/4 cups potato flour, 1 cup caster sugar, 1 teaspoon bicarbonate of soda, 1/4 cup butter, 1/2 cup grated coconut, 2 medium bananas, mashed, 1/2 cup yogurt or cultured buttermilk, Finely grated rind of one lemon and one orange, 1/2 cup fine or coarsly chopped roasted hazelnuts or almonds, cream and jam or fresh fruits if required.
Butter and flour one 10-inch cake tin.
Set oven to 170 C / 330 F.
Sift together the milk powder, potato flour, sugar and bicarb soda.
Melt the butter in a small pan and toast the coconut in it.
Mash the bananas and mix in the yogurt, rind and coconut. Add the dry ingredients and nuts and beat with a spoon.
Pour cake batter into the buttered tin and bake 20 to 30 minutes. Test with toothpick, allow the cake to rest for ten minutes and turn it out onto a cooling rack. When cool, split and fill with whipped cream and fresh fruit.

Akrura das, Gita Coaching: DO THE FIRST STEP!
There was a Christian monk that said, "Act as if everything depends on you, and pray as if everything depends on God."
We are responsible in front of Krsna for our lives. We don't want to engage Him in our service. We want to do things, knowing that the results depend on him. But we want to make a proper, sincere effort.
There is a very nice tool for procrastination. It's three words - do it now. If you think you have to do something, do it right now, if you don't have anythiing super urgent to do in that particular second.
One of the keys to success is - do the first step. Get up and do the first step: make that phone call, do this exercise, write this letter, write this CV, etc.
Just do the first step, and then the second step and third step, and you will start moving like anything.

Akrura das, Gita Coaching: SHOULD A DEVOTEE BE ORGANIZED?
We have Bhaktivinoda Thakura's daily schedule. He was super organized. Every minute was organized.
It is mode of goodness to be organized. If someone thinks he is transcendental and he does not have to be organized, it means some kind of ignorance is creeping in.• Email to a friend • •
Akrura das, Gita Coaching: DO YOU HAVE TO BE POOR?
Krsna says that when he is especially merciful to someone he takes away everything from him. So it doesn't pay off to surrender to Krsna.
One devotee told me that he would rather worship Siva because Siva gives material benedictions.
Krsna knows what you need and He will give you the resources accordingly. There is a saying that the happiest man is not the one who has the most but the one who is happy with what he has.

Akrura das, Gita Coaching: FRESH CHALLENGES
Srila Prabhupada set measurable goals for us. He defined success by setting measurable goals. He also wanted us to be perfect gentleman, to develop a good character.
This is what leaders and preachers do. They say, "This is the next target. This is how will you advance. This is how will you grow. This is how will you express your devotion to Krsna. So go for it!"
The leaders create fresh challenges.

Subhavilasa das ACBSP, Toronto, CA: The glories of Pavitropana Ekadasi
Tomorrow is Pavitropana Ekadasi and these are the glories of this ekadasi.
Shri Yudhisthira Maharaja said, "Oh Madhusudana, Oh killer of the Madhu demon, please be merciful to me and describe to me the Ekadasi that occurs during the light fortnight of the month of Shravana (July-August)." The Supreme Lord, Sri Krishna, replied, "Yes, Oh king, I shall happily narrate its glories to you, for just by hearing about this sacred Ekadasi one attains the merit of performing a horse sacrifice. "At the dawn of Dvarpara-yuga there lived a king by the name of Mahijita, who ruled the kingdom of Mahismati-puri. Because he had no son, his entire kingdom seemed utterly cheerless to him. A married man who has no son gains no happiness in this life or the next. The Sanskrit word for 'son' is putra. Pu is the name of a particular hell, and tra means 'to deliver.' Thus the word putra means 'a person who delivers one from the hell named Pu.' Therefore every married man should produce at least one son and train him properly; then the father will be delivered from a hellish condition of life. But this injunction does not apply to the serious devotees of Lord Vishnu or Krishna, for the Lord becomes their son, father, and mother.
Furthermore, Chanakya Pandita says,
satyam mata pita jnanam
dharmo bhrata daya sakha
santih patni ksama putrah
sadete mama vandhavah
"Truth is my mother, knowledge is my father, my occupational duty is my brother, kindness is my friend, tranquility is my wife, and forgiveness is my son. These six are my family members." Among the twenty-six leading qualities of a devotee of the Lord, forgiveness is the topmost. Therefore devotees should make an extra endeavor to develop this quality. Here Chanakya says "forgiveness is my son," and thus a devotee of the Lord, even though he may be on the path of renunciation, may observe this Ekadasi and pray to attain this kind of "son." For a long time this king tried very hard to obtain an heir, but to no avail. Seeing his years advancing ever onwards, King Mahijita became increasingly anxious.
One day he told an assembly of his advisers: 'I have committed no sin in this life, and there is no ill-gotten wealth in my treasury. I have never usurped the offerings to the demigods or brahmanas. When I waged war and conquered kingdoms, I followed the rules and regulations of the military art, and I have protected my subjects as if they were my own children. I punished even my own relatives if they broke the law, and if my enemy was gentle and religious I welcomed him. Oh twice-born souls, although I am a religious and faithful follower of the Vedic standards, still my home is without a son. Kindly tell me the reason for this.' "Hearing this, the king's brahmana advisers discussed the subject among themselves, and with the aim of benefiting the king they visited the various ashrams of the great sages. At last they came upon a sage who was austere, pure, and self-satisfied, and who was strictly observing a vow of fasting. His senses were completely under control, he had conquered his anger, and he was expert at performing his occupational duty. Indeed, this great sage was expert in all the conclusions of the Vedas, and he had extended his life span to that of Lord Brahma himself. His name was Lomasa Rishi, and he knew part, present, and future. After each kalpa passed, one hair would fall out of his body (One kalpa, or twelve hours of Lord Brahma, equals 4,320,000,000 years). All the king's brahmana advisers very happily approached him one by one to offer their humble respects.
"Captivated by this great soul, King Mahijita's advisers offered obeisances to him and said very respectfully, 'Only because of our great good fortune, Oh sage, have we been allowed to see you.' "Lomasa Rishi saw them bowing down to him and replied, 'Kindly let me know why you have come here. Why are you praising me? I must do all I can to solve your problems, for sages like me have only one interest: to help others. Do not doubt this.'
Lomasa Rishi had all good qualities because he was a devotee of the Lord. As stated in the Srimad-Bhagavatam (5:18:12),
yasyasti bhaktir bhagavaty akinchana
sarvair gunais tatra samasate surah
harav abhaktasya kuto mahad-guna
manorathenasati dhavato bahih
"In one who has unflinching devotional service to Krishna, all the good qualities of Krishna and the demigods are consistently manifest. However, he who has no devotion to the Supreme Personality of Godhead has no good qualifications because he is engaged by mental concoction in material existence, which is the external feature of the Lord."
"The king's representatives said, 'We have come to you, Oh exalted sage, to ask for your help in solving a very serious problem. Oh sage, you are like Lord Brahma. Indeed, there is no better sage in the entire world. Our king, Mahijita, is without a son, though he has sustained and protected us as if we were his sons. Seeing him so unhappy on account of being sonless, we have become very sad, Oh sage, and therefore we have entered the forest to perform severe austerities. By our good fortune we happened upon you. Everyone's desires and activities become successful just by your darshan. Thus we humbly ask that you tell us how our kind king can obtain a son.'
"Hearing their sincere plea, Lomasa Rishi absorbed himself in deep meditation for a moment and at once understood the king's previous life. Then he said, 'Your ruler was a merchant in his past life, and feeling his wealth insufficient, he committed sinful deeds. He traveled to many villages to trade his goods. Once, at noon on the day after the Ekadasi that comes during the light fortnight of the month of Jyeshtha (Trivikrama - May-June), he became thirsty while traveling from place to place. He came upon a beautiful pond on the outskirts of a village, but just as he was about to drink at the pond a cow arrived there with her new-born calf. These two creatures were also very thirsty because of the heat, but when the cow and calf started to drink, the merchant rudely shoved them aside and selfishly slaked his own thirst. This offense against a cow and her calf has resulted in your king's being without a son now. But the good deeds he performed in his previous life have given him rulership over an undisturbed kingdom.'
"Hearing this, the king's advisers replied, 'Oh renowned rishi, we have heard that the Vedas say one can nullify the effects of one's past sins by acquiring merit. Be so kind as to give us some instruction by which our king's sins can be destroyed; please give him your mercy so that a prince will take birth in his family.'
"Lomasa Rishi said, 'There is an Ekadasi called Putrada, which comes during the light fortnight of the month of Shravana. On this day all of you, including your king, should fast and stay awake all night, strictly following the rules and regulations. Then you should give the king whatever merit you gain by this fast. If you follow these instructions of mine, he will surely be blessed with a fine son.'
"All the king's advisers became very pleased to hear these words from Lomasa Rishi, and they all offered him their grateful obeisances. Then, their eyes bright with happiness, they returned home.
"When the month of Shravana arrived, the king's advisers remembered the advice of Lomasa Rishi, and under their direction all the citizens of Mahismati-puri, as well as the king, fasted on Ekadasi. And on the next day, Dvadasi, the citizens dutifully offered their accrued merit to him. By the strength of all this merit, the queen became pregnant and eventually gave birth to a most beautiful son.
"O Yudhisthira," Lord Krishna concluded, "the Ekadasi that comes during the light fortnight of the month of Shravana has thus rightfully become famous as Putrada ["bestower of a son"]. Whoever desires happiness in this world and the next should certainly fast from all grains and legumes on this holy day. Indeed, whoever simply hears the glories of Putrada Ekadasi becomes completely free of all sins, is blessed with a good son, and surely ascends to heaven after death."
Thus ends the narration of the glories of Shravana-sukla Ekadasi, or Putrada Ekadasi, from the Bhavishya Purana.

Bharatavarsa.net: Bhakti Vikasa Swami: Teaching English
Later, there was a report from Hyderabad about starting a school there and many children coming to learn English. Prabhupada said, Don't give this much priority. He said, In India, you can start a big English class, but they will just come, get enough education to become a clerk, and then leave the devotees and leave the farm to get some miserable job in town. He said that it is not that everyone has to learn in an educated way even to read. When he heard the gurukula boys (when they walk and chant at Mayapur) he said, Even if they never become literate, just that they can do this much (they were chanting Gita verses in Bengali), they will become perfect.

Akrura das, Gita Coaching: BE CREATIVE
It may seem that rules and regulations in Krsna consciousness limit us, but within the framework of Krsna consciousness and its standards, one can be unlimitedly creative.
Krsna enjoys variety.
We have to find a way how to express ourselves and use our creativity within Krsna consciousness in a bona-fide way and please Krsna with our talents.
For example, we learned to preach by telling, but we are finding a new ways to preach by listening and asking questions.

Bharatavarsa.net: Book distribution seminar: An Unlikely Hero in the World of Sankirtan
Ayodhya Dasa, a devotee of Indian descent, joined ISKCON in 1976 in Detroit and was initiated by Srila Prabhupada in 1977. While in Detroit he distributed books while serving in the life membership department. But for many years he wanted to go to Vrndavana. In 1995 Krsna made the arrangement. That year his brother-in-law passed away in India and he was asked to attend the funeral ceremony because he was the only surviving male in the family. He took the opportunity to visit Vrndavana. He loved Vrndavana and decided he would move there. Dina Bandhu Prabhu told him that Prabhupada wanted his books distributed on the trains and encouraged Ayodhya to try it. He did, and though he didn't distribute many books he got a taste for book distribution. He was also going shop to shop in Vrndavana and various towns near Vrndavana, but then he started distributing exclusively on the trains. He liked the trains for three reasons: one, because the people had laxmi; two, because they were sitting there with nothing to do; and three, because there were different people every day. He began traveling from Mathura to Delhi and back every day.
Every morning he looks forward to going out again to distribute Srila Prabhupada's books. He doesn't take a day off. He even goes out on Janmastami -- and he's 76 years old! But in the summer he goes to the West because it's so hot in India and his wife and family are in the West. He's especially inspired by Srila Prabhupada's statement "If you want to please me, then distribute my books." Upon hearing that for the first time, he thought, "This is something I can do. There are not many other things I can do, so it's Krsna's mercy that I can do something that is pleasing to Prabhupada and Krsna." Ayodhya Prabhu likes to recall how he sold a Srimad-Bhagavatam volume to an Indian gentleman who was later initiated as Rasaraja Prabhu, one of the leaders of the Bhaktivedanta Institute.
When Ayodhya distributes the Bhagavad-gita he tells the person, "This Bhagavad-gita is no ordinary book. Although it is 5,000 years old, it is still famous all over the world, and although so many Bhagavad-gitas had been translated into other languages and read all over the world before this one, no one became a devotee of Krsna. But this 'Bhagavad gita As It Is' has made thousands of devotees of Krsna all over the world."
Sometimes he tells the customer, "I don't think you are going to buy this book, but at least look at the quality of the printing." When they look at the nice quality of the book, they quite often buy it. Reverse psychology.
Ayodhya Prabhu says, "To distribute books is not easy. You have to be humble, tolerant, and patient. Once I was showing a book to a Muslim. I was detached, but I was trying. The man said, 'I'm a Muslim. I'm not interested in this book. But because of your gentle behavior, I will buy this book from you."
Ayodhya Prabhu has dedicated his life to book distribution and wants others to also get the mercy by distributing books. He says, "Devotees who retire can go to India or anywhere and distribute books. What good is playing with the grandchildren and all that? To distribute books is austere, but it is also very sweet. The austerity brings the satisfaction. Book distribution is very nice. Prabhupada once said, 'You can hire a cook, you can hire a pujari, you can hire a cleaner, but a preacher you cannot hire, because that comes from the heart.'"

Akrura das, Gita Coaching: DON'T CONTACT THEM ONLY WHEN YOU NEED THEM
In the US as the elections in 2012 approach (and elsewhere as elections approach), voters will suddenly receive a “newsletter” from their Representative or Senator apprising them of all that’s been done for them.
This demonstrates a very low respect for voters’ intelligence.
Where were the newsletters during the prior few years?
Why not keep in touch electronically more frequently?
This same hypocrisy holds true for any organization, public or private, for-profit or non-profit.
Don’t merely contact people when you want something or need them.
Stay in touch, provide value, offer free help.
Relationships aren’t built on contacting someone solely when you need them for your own self-interests.

Toronto Sankirtan Team, CA: A first time magic
Submitted by : Bhaktin Rashmi
Last Friday was not the first time I was out on sankirtan, but it did feel like I had never done it before. I joined Mangal Aarti to share Srila Prabhupada’s books with students at Ryerson University in the heart of downtown Toronto. As the weather was very good, I found that a lot of students were on campus but they were very unresponsive to my meager attempts to get them to stop and listen to me. After spending 10 min not being able to stop a single person, out of impatience I approached Mangal Aarti for advice. She made me watch what she has learnt from HG Vaisesika Prabhu as she approached a person and distributed a Perfection of Yoga to him making him walk away chanting the name of Gauranga. Watching this inspired me to be more confident and doing my duty of at least putting the book in their hand. As Vaisesika Prabhu has taught us, every person I approached after that, I made sure that they touched a book and somewhere my new found confidence inspired me to go that extra distance in making sure they took the book. My hesitation had suddenly disappeared. I found that in the next half an hour, I had successfully distributed 6 books just by breaking out of my comfort zone and putting my trust in Srila Prabhupada’s books. The joy I got from distributing those 6 books was unmatched by anything I had ever experienced. It made me realise how powerful the art of sankirtan is and how essential it was for my progress in Krishna Consciousness. I was so desperate to experience that happiness again that I couldn’t resist but keep distributing books, this time outside Urban Edge Yoga. Having the same mood and confidence, I managed to distribute 2 more books and came to the realization that there was nothing more pleasing in this world than this.

Nityananda Chandra Das, Dallas TX: Weekend Teachings
As the days get closer and closer to Janmastami our temple and activities become busier and busier. Last Saturday morning I performed a Nam Karan Yajna, a ceremony by which the newborn baby’s name is decided. The name chosen was Lalita Devi, the dear friend of Srimati Radharani. The baby was born during Ekadasi last month right near the Visakha Nakshatra (Visakha is the dear friend of Lalita) and later on found out that her aunty, who is a nice devotee, also has the name Lalita. Also the beautiful baby looked just like little Lalita in the Little Krishna cartoon.
After finishing that program I went to what I thought would have been another home program. I was invited a few weeks ago to come and speak at a Bhagavata Saptaha that a Nepali man was organizing. Much to my surprise there were well over 300 people at this event. It was held at the Nepali Cultural Center in Dallas. Entering in the building reminded me of India. It was about 110 F outside and the building’s AC was struggling. AC water dripped from the ceiling as the hundreds of Nepalis approached the altar and vyasasana for blessings. Even with the AC maxed out it was quite hot inside. There was a big platform and canopy as a vyasasana and I was motioned to sit and speak. The host asked if I could explain the essence of the Srimad Bhagavatam and its glories. I spoke at first about so called “material qualities” of the Bhagavatam. That there is a chapter wherein it is discussed the the smallest calculation of time based on atomic interaction. Or that there are accurate measurements to the various planets in our solar system, or that you can find accurate descriptions of the growth of the fetus. Then the discussion let to why the Bhagavatam was produced, the story of Vyasa’s spiritual maturation and finally the goal, Bhakti. One could see the appreciation that all the Nepali devotees had hearing Bhagavatam Katha. We followed by inviting them to come to the Janmastami festival. Later that evening the whole family and I attend a great lecture by His Grace Manonatha Prabhu who led a question and answers session on Veda and Vedanta and spoke about his upcoming Yoga Sutras discourse.
On Sunday morning we had another very nice program. I was invited to speak at the Christ United Methodist Church in Plano. A church with a membership of about 8000. Murari Vallabh Prabhu, accompanied me on this trip to their beautiful facility. The building must have had at least 40 class rooms. We were invited in a room wherein sat fifty 60 year olds. It was to be a class on Hinduism 101. We first gave the explanation of the word Hindu and gave a basic Bhagavad Gita 101. The class was very well received. Many came to thank us after the class and particularly a gentleman came to me and reading his notes stated, “We are a soul in the vehicle of the body, wow this REALLY puts perspective on things.” The day was then followed by a wonderful kirtan led by Urjsvat Prabhu at the Sunday Feast.

Madhava Ghosh dasa, New Vrndavan, USA: My Feet Freak Out
Feet: Something is wrong.
Brain: Not really, we are at a festival in the temple, great place to be.
Feet: No we are not, this is not the temple.
Brain: What do you mean? Of course this is the temple — I can see Radha Vrindaban Candra standing on the altar.
Feet: You are hallucinating or something, I know for a fact this is not the temple. The Maya witch must have confused you and taken you to a different place.
Brain: I doubt that. I drove my car up the same ridge road I have driven thousands if not more than ten thousand times over the last 4 decades. I saw the same scenery and it took the normal amount of time. This looks like the temple, smells like the temple, sounds like the temple.
Feet: It doesn’t feel like the temple. The temple has a wooden parquet floor and this is not a parquet floor. It is way too smooth.
Since this temple opened in 1983, we have danced here so many times, sometimes three times a day, sometimes for hours at a time during big festivals. At one step a second, that is more than a thousand impressions per arotik. That could have been a thousand arotiks some years which means in a good year we touched this floor over a million times so over 28 years possibly in excess of 10 million impressions.
So I know what the temple floor feels like and this isn’t the temple room floor. We need to get out of here.
Brain: LOL. So that is the cause for concern? The limited evidence of your sensory experience? Don’t worry, it is ok, you really are in the temple. It is the first Pushpanjali Festival ever held here — you have never been to one of those before.
If you could see you would know there are two devotees on the altar showering Sri Sri Radha Vrindaban Candra with flower petals, most of them picked in New Vrindaban itself.
There are also some pujaris picking up the flowers and tossing them continuously in the air so it looks like a fountain of petals in front of the Them.
Later the pujaris will gather up the petals from the altar and take them to the third floor of the temple where sections of the stained glass vaulted ceiling have been removed. They will shower them on the assembled devotees from there.
As the petals fall many will not be caught by the devotees and will land on the floor. As devotees walk and dance around, the petals will be crushed so they put down rolls of paper on the floor to make cleanup easier.
Feet: There is paper on the floor?
Brain: Yes, that is why you aren’t feeling the wood floor you are so familiar with, but don’t worry, it is still there under the paper.
Feet: Whew, thanks for that, you have relieved my anxiety. My direct experience wasn’t jelling with what you were sending out as the current situation. Now I know why.
Brain: Get ready to roll though, because once those petals hit the floor, devotees are going to gather them up and start throwing them at each other so we do need to be mobile and efficient in insertion and extraction for flower petal throwing opportunities.
Feet: Roger that. I have re-calibrated the parameters of what moves need to be limited due to the lessened traction of the smoother surface but still have an ample amount of options so dancing and/or flower petal tossing will be no problem. Proceed as desired.
Brain: Thanks for your cooperation. Interestingly, though for you this was a bit of a disconcerting experience, for this kid this is the way it has always been and she isn’t missing a beat.
It is good to retain that childlike sense of wonder, and try to see Krishna in every moment, freed from the bonds of expectation and attachment.
(Editor’s note: Check out more Pushpanjali photos here. This was a fun festival and I predict it will grow into the biggest festival in NV within 10 years.)

Madri dd, South Africa: Maha harinam and 4200 of Srila Prabhupada's books
For three hours last Saturday, 6th August 2011 two hundred devotees participated in a maha harinam in downtown Johannesburg, South Africa. 4200 of Srila Prabhupada's books and 9500 packets of caramelized peanut prasad were distributed to Native African citizens.
This is the third such program held here during this year. In March this year we went on maha harinam and distributed 1000 books, more prasad packs and pamphlets with 70 devotees. Then Nrsimhananda Prabhu who is the organizer of this event encouraged the devotees to double it for Srila Prabhupada's pleasure. Then on the 7th May 2011 he arranged another maha harinam and 100 devotees attended. The target was surpassed by Srila Prabhupada's mercy and the devotee’s enthusiasm. More than 2000 of Srila Prabhupada's books in English, 5000 pamphlets, 4500 packets of caramelized peanut prasadam was distributed during the harinam.
Nrsimhananda Prabhu, who also serves as the co-international director for Bhaktivedanta College of Education and Culture, then embarked on a program of doubling the effort. Hence with the support and co-operation of more than 200 devotees the program reached new heights distributing 4200 books in two hours. Understanding that these attempts have not reached millions more we plan to double the numbers for the next harinam. Planning has already begun.
Many devotees who participated in these efforts have never distributed books before and have commented that the experience was most inspiring. Some said that despite having attended many blissful festivals in various Iskcon centres this sort of festival of giving really touched their hearts. Indeed the missionary spirit of distributing the mercy has a special effect.
The harinam chanters lead such ecstatic kirtans and the chorus was tumultuous. Srila Prabhupada's books, prasadam and the holy names, Hare Krishna Hare Krishna Krishna Krishna Hare Hare/ Hare Rama Hare Rama Rama Rama Hare Hare, form a complete package of happiness for the giver and the receiver - of this there is certainly no doubt.
The recipients of the books could be seen immediately reading or paging through the books on the pavements, bus stops or taxis. We pray that the Vaisnavas and readers bless these humble attempts.

Yoga of Ecology, Bhakta Chris, USA: Bad Food? Tax It And Subsidize Vegetables
Click here to read the full essay from Mark Bittman at the Sunday Review of the New York Times
WHAT will it take to get Americans to change our eating habits? The need is indisputable, since heart disease, diabetes and cancer are all in large part caused by the Standard American Diet. (Yes, it’s SAD.)Though experts increasingly recommend a diet high in plants and low in animal products and processed foods, ours is quite the opposite, and there’s little disagreement that changing it could improve our health and save tens of millions of lives.
And — not inconsequential during the current struggle over deficits and spending — a sane diet could save tens if not hundreds of billions of dollars in health care costs.
Yet the food industry appears incapable of marketing healthier foods. And whether its leaders are confused or just stalling doesn’t matter, because the fixes are not really their problem. Their mission is not public health but profit, so they’ll continue to sell the health-damaging food that’s most profitable, until the market or another force skews things otherwise. That “other force” should be the federal government, fulfilling its role as an agent of the public good and establishing a bold national fix.
Rather than subsidizing the production of unhealthful foods, we should turn the tables and tax things like soda, French fries, doughnuts and hyperprocessed snacks. The resulting income should be earmarked for a program that encourages a sound diet for Americans by making healthy food more affordable and widely available.
The average American consumes 44.7 gallons of soft drinks annually. (Although that includes diet sodas, it does not include noncarbonated sweetened beverages, which add up to at least 17 gallons a person per year.) Sweetened drinks could be taxed at 2 cents per ounce, so a six-pack of Pepsi would cost $1.44 more than it does now. An equivalent tax on fries might be 50 cents per serving; a quarter extra for a doughnut. (We have experts who can figure out how “bad” a food should be to qualify, and what the rate should be; right now they’re busy calculating ethanol subsidies. Diet sodas would not be taxed.)
Simply put: taxes would reduce consumption of unhealthful foods and generate billions of dollars annually. That money could be used to subsidize the purchase of staple foods like seasonal greens, vegetables, whole grains, dried legumes and fruit.
We could sell those staples cheap — let’s say for 50 cents a pound — and almost everywhere: drugstores, street corners, convenience stores, bodegas, supermarkets, liquor stores, even schools, libraries and other community centers.
This program would, of course, upset the processed food industry. Oh well. It would also bug those who might resent paying more for soda and chips and argue that their right to eat whatever they wanted was being breached. But public health is the role of the government, and our diet is right up there with any other public responsibility you can name, from water treatment to mass transit.
Some advocates for the poor say taxes like these are unfair because low-income people pay a higher percentage of their income for food and would find it more difficult to buy soda or junk. But since poor people suffer disproportionately from the cost of high-quality, fresh foods, subsidizing those foods would be particularly beneficial to them.
Right now it’s harder for many people to buy fruit than Froot Loops; chips and Coke are a common breakfast. And since the rate of diabetes continues to soar — one-third of all Americans either have diabetes or are pre-diabetic, most with Type 2 diabetes, the kind associated with bad eating habits — and because our health care bills are on the verge of becoming truly insurmountable, this is urgent for economic sanity as well as national health.

"Our only hope is to chant Hare Krishna and rectify the whole situation. I think this is possible. It has been proved in Calcutta that the Naxalites were very much against us holding our Hare Krishna festival, but still later on they became sympathetic and did not cause any harm for us. If we follow the same principles everywhere... [governments] all over the world will come forward sympathetically for advancing this movement."
