Japa Group: Both The Means And The End

Hare Krsna dear devotees. I would like to share with you another amazing text from Harinama Cintamani by Srila Bhaktivinoda Thakur.

The only method or means (sadhana) in this age is the holy name of the Lord. The only goal (sadhya) to be attained in this age is Krsnaprema. Even in the stage of perfection, the name is not given up but is chanted all the more, for it is intrinsic to the activities of prema. Indeed, the name is not different from the Lord: it is the very embodiment of prema. If the means is the end, then the end and the means never contradict one another. If process is identical to the objective, then it is easy for the jivas to attain the desired goal of life, Krsnaprema. By the mercy of His holy name, Krsna easily delivers the jivas in the age of Kali.

I hope you have a blessed week, full of realisations on chanting.

your servant,

Aruna devi

ISKCON Toronto, Canada: Happy Kartik!

Today marks the beginning of a month that is celebrated as an opportunity to dive deeper in our spirituality. This lunar month is known as Kartik and falls during October and November.

This month is described as especially dear to Krishna, and sincere spiritualists keep it sacred through acts of devotion and vows of austerity aimed at increasing their spiritual strength and allowing them to draw closer to Krishna.

At the Hare Krishna temple, every Sunday Feast during this very special month will be highlighted with sublime festivities. Of note, we will collectively sing the Damodarastakam prayers, which celebrate one of Krishna's most endearing pastimes.

Please stay tuned for more information on these wonderful activities and we truly hope you can join us for what will be a spiritually introspective time of the year.

As a special treat, you can view a wonderful animation of the Damodarastakam prayers (complete with lyrics and translation) below:

Bhakti Lata, Alachua, USA: What is the Seed?

At last I have published a page on my blog to describe the philosophy of the "seed of devotion." Below is the new text.

***

The morning that I was born I was given the name Bhakti lata bij which, in the ancient Sanskrit language, translates as "the seed of the vine of devotion."

This bhakti lata bij is very special and rarely given. It is described in ancient scriptures that the living entity has been wandering the universe for millions of years, so very, very lost, so heartsick in his search for love. But somehow, by the grace of the Lord and a loving spiritual master, the living entity receives within his heart the bhakti lata bij, the seed of devotion.

This seed of devotion must be tended to with great care. One must water the seed by serving the Lord and His devotees.

One must receive proper sunlight through the chanting of the holy name.

One must dig out all of the unwanted weeds within the heart - pride, lust, envy, and so many others.

I find it very curious and very profound that the plant in this metaphor of devotion is not a stately banyan tree or a divine lotus. It is a vine. And what is the most important feature of a vine?

It must always rest upon something else to grow.

In this metaphor, that "something else" is the Vaishnavas, the devotees of the Lord.

Then with proper cultivation, love, and grace, resting upon the strength of the devotees, this vine of devotion may wind up and up and up to at last reach the feet of the Lord Himself.

"According to their karma, all living entities are wandering throughout the entire universe. Out of many millions of wandering living entities, one who is fortunate gets an opportunity to associate with a bona fide spiritual master by the grace of Krishna. By the mercy of both Krishna and the spiritual master, such a person receives the seed of the creeper of devotional service." (Chaitanya Charitamrita, Madhya 19.51)

Haricharana das, Indonesia: "To the Supreme Lord, whose form is the embodiment of eternal existence, knowledge, and bliss, whose..."

“To the Supreme Lord, whose form is the embodiment of eternal existence, knowledge, and bliss, whose shark-shaped earrings are swinging to and fro, who is beautifully shining in the divine realm of Gokula, who I (due to the offense of breaking the pot of yogurt that His mother was churning into butter and then stealing the butter that was kept hanging from a swing) is quickly running from the wooden grinding mortar in fear of mother Yasoda, but who has been caught from behind by her who ran after Him with greater speed—to that Supreme Lord, Sri Damodara, I offer my humble obeisances.”

-

Damodarastakam

“In the month of Kartika one should worship Lord Damodara and daily recite the prayer known as Damodarastaka, which has been spoken by the sage Satyavrata and which attracts Lord Damodara. (Sri Hari-bhakti-vilasa 2.16.198).”

Haricharana das, Indonesia: Thinking of Kṛṣṇa 24 hours

Arjuna & Krsna at the battle of Kurukstra

From lecture by H.H. Bhakti Madhurya Govinda Swami:

man-manā bhava mad-bhakto
mad-yājī mā
namaskuru
mām evai
yasi satya te
pratijāne priyo ‘si me

Bhagavad-gita As It Is 18.65

Always think of Me, become My devotee, worship Me and offer your homage unto Me. Thus you will come to Me without fail. I promise you this because you are My very dear friend.

Srila Prabhupada stressed » One should always act in such a way that all his daily activities are in connection with Kṛṣṇa. He should arrange his life in such a way that throughout the twenty-four hours he cannot but think of Kṛṣṇa.

One should fix his mind on this original form of Godhead, Kṛṣṇa. One should not even divert his attention to other forms of the Lord. The Lord has multiforms as Viṣṇu, Nārāyaa, Rāma, Varāha, etc.

To connect to Kṛṣṇa there’s many ways but Sabda Brahman or transcendental sound is very important. Before in India the entertainment is to gathering to chant and hear Sabda Brahman like Bhagavad-gita story of Ramayana etc. so they peaceful. Now it almost lost,  people are Into TV which agitated the mind. Naturally our sensed could not be satisfied by senses gratification.

As example Michael Jackson who is very famous singer has many money and fame but crying for sleeping.  Although lots of money but cry for sleeping. What’s the point? Kṛṣṇa said if you want to be happy fix your mind to Me. Srila prabhupada said arrange your life in such a way so you can think Kṛṣṇa 24 hour.

For most devotees who work or in school or in collage may be its difficult, than Maharaj give suggestions:

1.    Sabda Brhman: to reading Srila Prabhupada books for the worker may be not possible all the time. So we can make arrangement to play mp3 or cd in a player. Like while drive motor bike, to use ear plug maybe to dangerous. Maharaj suggest to install speaker on the bike so we can hear the kirtan while drive. For the car, just turn on the player with the Kirtan cd on it. At the house also play it. Especially we should arrange after we wake up at the morning we should immediately play kirtan record. So it can help us from our tamasik mind after wake up. After sleeping is easy to trap at tamasik.

2.    Put many picture of Kṛṣṇa as many as possible either at your work or your house.

We don’t have power to think Kṛṣṇa by our mind alone; we should make arrangement so we can think Kṛṣṇa 24 hours. Make the environment sattvik. Man-manā bhava mad-bhakto makes your environment like that so we can thing Kṛṣṇa 24 hour. If we do it like that we will fulfill Srila Prabhupada other as it stated in the purport of this sloka.

New Vrindavan, USA: The month of Damodar - Kartika

Image Courtesy : Bhaktivedanta Book Trust International, Krishna.com

The auspicious Month of Kartik, more popular as the Month of Damodara, is here once again heralding the spiritually enlivening ‘Festival of Lights’.

Mother Yasoda bound little mischievous Krishna with ropes to the grinding mortar for having stolen butter and thus He came to be known as Damodara. The significance is in that the Lord of the Universe can be bound only by the rope of pure love.

The Kartik Month is the period when the enchantingly beautiful child Krishna starts playing this sweet pastime of stealing butter.

During thus Damodara month, devotees get the opportunity to personally offer Arati to Lord Damodara with ghee lamps and sing the very enchanting ‘Damorashtakam’, to receive the special mercy of the Lord.

The Glories Of Kartik month
“Pure devotional service to Me which, because it places Me under My devotee’s dominion, is very difficult to attain, is easily attained by following this vow in Mathura during Karttika.”

“In the month of Kartik, which is very dear to Sri Hari, one who bathes early in the morning attains the merit of bathing in all places of pilgrimage. Anybody who offers the Lord a ghee lamp in the month of Kartik, O brahmana, becomes free from all kinds of sins, such as killing a brahmana, and he goes to the abode of Lord Hari.” (Brahma Khanda).

In the month of Karttika, one should daily worship Lord Damodara and sing the Damorashtaka (the eight prayers of Lord Damodara) which pleases Lord Damodara, written by the sage named Satyavrata. - (HARI BHAKTI VILASA 16/198)

Ananda Subramanian, Iowa, USA: Story behind poverty

The Planning Commission of India, recently, announced the official poverty line to be Rs 32 (62 cents) per day in the cities and Rs 26 (53 cents) per day in the rural areas. It basically states that an individual can consume 2100 calories of food with Rs 32 and 26 respectively (not sure how that is possible?). The poverty line calculation does not take into account education, health and other basic needs expenditures. It just accounts for money required for basic food consumption. The methodology has no relation to reality and hence very weak.

India, majority of it, is rural with agriculture as its base economy. Barring the cities, majority of Indians live in small towns or villages where economy thrives on agriculture. If the Planning Commission calculated poverty status for rural residents (based on food consumption), then the assumption they have made is that there is food shortage in rural villages and people do not have access to nutritious food. This shortage is created by the artificial consumer based economy in which the consumer is empowered (as God) to exploit the resources to one’s whims and fancies. Now, who is the consumer? – the individual with money. The individual without money is left behind in poverty and lamentation. Therefore, for the past 4 or 5 decades, the goal in life is to earn money to be empowered to consume at will in pursuit of happiness. The result of such a life strategy is there is exploitation on one end and poverty on the other.

Ever since the Indian economy followed its western counterparts, the 2nd and 3rd generation farmers have either resorted to growing “cash” crops for money or decided to abandon agriculture as a livelihood and move to the city for bigger and greater life. Growing cash crops on a mass scale for money depletes the quality of soil and increases the disproportionate use of water thus creating an imbalance in the local ecosystem and also increases the dependence on synthetic chemicals and man-made water management systems. As a result there is an imbalance in nature. An imbalance results in shortage of rainfall and shortage of ground water. Agriculture cannot survive in such a condition. This trend has motivated farmers to either fully abandon farming and move to cities or abandon traditional farming techniques suiting local soil conditions and adopt corporate large scale level farming techniques. As a result, there is either mass exodus to cities burdening the cities or depleting local soil and water conditions.

Srila Prabhupada, being the visionary that he is, repeatedly stressed on the importance of cultivating spiritual vision to one’s life. When the goal of life shifts from spiritual to material, people seek after material illusion of happiness. They want to make money quick and in large amounts. They think that living a simple life is not fashionable anymore and thus boring. Srila Prabhupada said that if farmers simply work for 4 or 5 months a year tilling their lands to meet their household needs in terms of food and other necessities and the remaining months of the year engage in cultivating spiritual life, then life will be peaceful and happy. The traditional Vedic system of Varnashrama dharma did exactly that. It motivated people to live a simple life with high spiritual thoughts. Life was centered around God. Families lived together in one unit and took care of each other. There were no artificial poverty lines, no gaping divide between the haves and have nots, no stress, no depression, and other corollary modern day problems.

Estimating poverty is a clear indication that the system is malfunctioning with disproportionate use of resources. Srila Prabhupada constantly preached a life dependent on agriculture, land, cows, rains and ultimately Krishna. He strongly voiced the importance of spiritual consciousness and how that is possible only by surrender unto God. Unfortunately, modern day philosophers, scientists and administrators have completely removed God from our daily life. As a result, a powerful few exploit and abuse resources for their selfish interests leaving behind many in lamentation. It is not only the flawed system and administrators to blame but also the common man who has abandoned his spiritual values to adopt a selfish material way of life. Unless we live our life centered around God, there is no solution to modern day woes. It will only get worse!

Japa Group: By Such Chanting One Is Blessed

We had a nice comment in the Japa Room this week - it was about absorbing ourselves in the Panca Tattva mantra before chanting the Hare Krsna mantra....the devotee commented that it helped him to obtain attraction and surrender for chanting the Maha mantra.

I was reading a nice purport today that talks about this.

Strictly speaking, when chanting the names of the Pañca-tattva, one should fully offer his obeisances: śrī-krsna-caitanya prabhu-nityānanda śrī-advaita gadādhara śrīvāsādi-gaura-bhakta-vrnda. By such chanting one is blessed with the competency to chant the Hare Krsna mahā-mantra without offense. When chanting the Hare Krsna mahā-mantra, one should also chant it fully: Hare Krsna, Hare Krsna, Krsna Krsna, Hare Hare/ Hare Rāma, Hare Rāma, Rāma Rāma, Hare Hare.

Uploaded from Kaunas, Lithuania What is the purpose of life? It is sometimes said that the purpose of life is to ask such questions as this. The desire to discover life's purpose indicates that life does indeed have a purpose. Otherwise how could there be a desire to discover it? In other words, desires don't come out of nowhere. They are matched with that which satisfies them. So just as the hunger of the belly indicates the existence of food, the hunger to know the purpose of life indicates that life does indeed have a purpose. Our duty is to inquire about it's purpose. If we are determined to find the answer, we will be blessed with it. We will realize that we are meant to re-harmonize ourselves with the original source of our existence. Then when the negative thoughts come to check into the hotel of your mind there will be a big No Vacancy sign awaiting them, and they will have to go somewhere else to find a place of residence.
