H.G. Sankarshan das Adhikari, USA: Saturday 25 June 2011--Always Connect with the Essence of Existence--and--Which is Better: 16 Rounds or 64 Rounds?
bb A daily broadcast of the Ultimate Self Realization Course Saturday 25 June 2011 The Supreme Personality of Godhead, Lord Sri Krishna, and His eternal consort, Srimati Radharani are enjoying transcendental pastimes in the topmost planet of the spiritual world, Sri Goloka Vrindavan. They are beckoning us to rejoin them. (Click on photo to see a larger image.) Our Mission: To help everyone awaken their original Krishna consciousness, which is eternal, full of knowledge and full of bliss. Such a global awakening will, in one stroke, solve all the problems of the world society bringing in a new era of unprecedented peace and prosperity for all. May that day, which the world so desperately needs, come very soon. We request you to participate in this mission by reviving your dormant Krishna consciousness and assisting us in spreading this science all over the world. Dedicated with love to ISKCON Founder-Acharya: His Divine Grace A.C. Bhaktivedanta Swami Prabhupada, our beloved spiritual master, and to you, our dear readers. Today's Thought: Always Connect with the Essence of Existence Uploaded from Sydney, Australia Always connect with the essence of existence. Otherwise you will be carried away by the externals and remain subjected to the miseries of this material world. The essence of existence is loving service to the original source of everything, the Supreme Personality of Godhead. Once you are fully connected with Him, the seed-giving father of all, who reveals Himself in the Bhagavad-gita as Krishna, you will never be touched by the miseries of birth, death, old age, and disease ever again. Sankarshan Das Adhikari Answers According to the Vedic Version: Question: Which is Better: 16 Rounds or 64 Rounds? Dear Gurudeva, Please accept my humble obeisances at your feet, Recently I was discussing with a devotee who said that chanting 64 rounds of japa mala every day is the highest service, even if it means compromising one's facility to perform devotional service. But, Gurudeva, isn't it better to do 16 rounds of chanting and utilize the remaining time for some sort of service such as preaching or book distribution? Which is better chanting 16 rounds or chanting 64 rounds per day? Thank you, Amith Answer: Serving Guru's Order is the Best Krishna states that the highest duty is to surrender unto Him and that we should surrender unto Him by surrendering to his representative, the bona fide spiritual master. Therefore the highest principle is not how many rounds you chant. The highest principle is to follow the orders of your spiritual master. Since ISKCON Founder-Acharya, His Divine Grace A.C. Bhaktivedanta Swami Prabhupada, orders his followers to chant at least sixteen rounds of japa daily and to fully absorb themselves in activities for the salvation of the suffering human society--for ISKCON devotees a combination of chanting at least 16 rounds daily and working for the salvation of the human society is the highest principle. New Vrindavan, USA: Palace Rose Garden is in Full Bloom
Right now is the perfect time to visit the Palace Rose Garden, whether you are a home gardener or simply a lover of roses. The garden is in its first bloom until the end of June.
While most rose gardens have only one or two blooms each year, this year the Palace Rose Garden will have four blooms. This is a testament to both the exceptional quality of the rose varieties and to the expertise of Betty Hickey, the Palace rosarian since 1985.
This current first bloom will last until the end of June. The second bloom will be from mid-July until the end of July. The third bloom will be from mid-August until mid-September. The fourth bloom will be from mid-October until the first frost.
The Palace Rose Garden boasts over 100 different varieties of roses and over 850 plants. The Palace of Gold Rose Garden has been accredited by the All-America Rose Selections (AARS) since 1987. The standards for AARS accreditation are very high. There is a two-year probationary period before being accepted, and annual surprise inspections after acceptance. There are only around 130 accredited gardens in North America.
“The AARS requires that I maintain the overall appearance of the rose garden, so I usually do not pick flowers from the garden,” said Hickey. “But I make exceptions for special occasions. I pick flowers for Janmastami and I pick flowers for Prabhupada’s Appearance Day.”
Sunday, August 21, is Janmastami, or the day on which Lord Krishna descended from the spiritual world to this planet. New Vrindaban will host a special midnight darshan and feast to celebrate Janmastami. Janmastami celebrations will also be held on three other days as well, for those who are unable to visit the holy dham of New Vrindaban on the actual day of Janmastami. The four Janmastami celebrations will be on the following dates:
- Saturday, August 20
- Sunday, August 21
- Saturday, September 3
- Sunday, September 4
On Monday, August 22, there will be a special celebration at the Palace of Gold to commemorate the Appearance Day of His Divine Grace A.C. Bhaktivedanta Swami Prabhupada, the Founder-Acharya of New Vrindaban. The Palace of Gold was originally intended to be a home for Prabhupada, who left this world in November 1977, just a few months before the completion of the Palace. The Palace was then converted into Prabhupada’s mausoleum.
Even if you have visited the Palace of Gold before, please come back and visit the Palace Rose Garden. “These are colors that only God can create,” said Hickey with awe.

Tricked you! No real recipe here. Just the ingredients listed below the pic. Do you really need a recipe for a smoothie? Folks, I hope not.
Just wanted to wish everyone a sweet Friday night! This pic is so cute, it reminds me of something I would see on this blog of adorable coziness.
My kids are out with The Babu non-violently hunting manatees. So tonite, it’s just me and my stick blender. What are you cooking up in your little life of loveliness?
Madhava Ghosh dasa, New Vrndavan, USA: Your GPS Is Wrong
Every week people coming to New Vrindaban rely solely on GPS for directions and get lost.
Friday before the 24 Hour Kirtan ambulances came onto the ridge and turned around at the temple and left. They had gotten a call from some pilgrims on their way to New Vrindaban who told them they were near NV after having some heart issues and driving off the road.
Turns out they were near Dallas, West Virgina instead and had gotten there following the instructions on the GPS.
Please tell anyone who asks for directions to NV to NOT rely on their GPS — it will be wrong. Even if it gets you here it can send you down back roads instead of the main roads because it looks shorter to the GPS. Shorter isn’t necessarily quicker in West Virginia.
Tell them to follow the directions on the website.
http://newvrindaban.com/directions.html
Those will get them here the best way.
This is a generic problem in areas like West Virginia that aren’t laid out on a grid. Vidya brought me the attached picture. It was taken at a private lane near Oglebay Park, a large tourist destination on the north side of Wheeling.
So it isn’t only NV. :-)

Kurma dasa, AU: Kurma's Kuppa Soup
My Dad likes to have soup some days for lunch, so I make big batches and fill single-serve containers for him to warm up when he wants them.
Today I found myself with a glut of vine-ripened tomatoes, so I decided to make tomato soup, the Kurma Cookbook way.
First step was to blanche the tomatoes - I cut out the cores and made a cross with a knife on the other end of each tomato. This ensures that the skins will lift right off in one piece when they are blanched in water. But you knew that.
The recipe calls for dried basil, but I still have a few leaves on my basil plants outside, so why not use them, I thought.
I melted a little butter, added cracked black pepper, a smidge of asafetida and the blanched, peeled and chopped tomatoes and basil leaves, along with a slurp of water.
A long slow stewing broke them down to a nice sloppy, soupy consistency. After cooking I inserted a bamix and pureed the whole mixture, added salt and a sprinkle of raw sugar, and returned it to a full boil.
I melted a tad more butter in another pan, sprinkled in a little flour, and made a tiny roux. I added the roux to the soup and again returned to a simmer, stirring all the while. Finally I poured the whole soup trough a seive and removed the seeds, peppercorn pieces and other debris.
I know it looks like pumpkin soup in this photo - just a peculiarity of the light. But I can assure you it's tomato - soupe de tomate de la journée!
Bharatavarsa.net: Bhakti Vikasa Swami: the opinion of an ass
What is the value of opinion when the people are like dogs and asses? What is the use of taking the opinion of an ass? This vox populi -- taking the opinion of the public -- is degrading modern society. If the public is composed of drunkards, smokers, meat eaters, gamblers, and woman hunters, then what is the value of their opinion? Why take the opinion of fourth-class men? What Krsna says -- that is the standard. Krsna is the supreme, and His version is final. No other opinion is allowed. When I introduced the principle "No illicit sex life," I didn't ask for opinions -- "It must be done." ... Our program is not vox populi. We are saying only what the authoritative scriptures say. If you actually want to do social welfare, then you must take to the standard formula as given in the scriptures.

Devadeva Mirel, Alachua, USA: Summer Inspiration : Home Canning Album
Here is an album of home canning pics by Judydel. I love her kitchen and that she designed it with preserving the bounty from her beautiful NY State gardens. Details such as a cast iron apron front sink, dedicated canning pantry and plenty of counter space make this kitchen a canner’s dream. I first saw these pictures last year and have been inspired by them ever since. From drying to pickling, Judydel’s on top of it. And no, she is not a stay at home mom. She has a full-time job in the Big Apple! So, no excuses now. Chant the mantra: Yes, you CAN!

Vraja Kishor, JP: Side Effects of Spiritual Development
The final section of the 12th chapter of Gita describes the side effects of spiritual development in bhakti-yoga. In the first section, texts 1-7 asked, “which is the more perfect yoga: inactive contemplation on the formless absolute or active engagement in a relationship with the personal Godhead?” It answered that personal yoga is superior because it includes and surpasses everything in impersonal yoga.
Texts 8-12 addressed a new question: “since personal Bhakti-yoga is the most perfect yoga, how do we practice it?” in these four verses Krsna answers with a full spectrum of practices in and towards Bhakti-yoga.
The final section is texts 13-20. These seven verse describe the visible, verifiable symptoms of a person who is practicing Bhakti-yoga effectively.
When we hear this list it is natural to think, “I wish I had more of these qualities. But that misses the whole point of twelfth chapter. The point is that these qualities are automatic byproducts of Bhakti. All we should feel in reading this is “I wish I had more Bhakti. If I had more Bhakti I would naturally have all these good traits.” I think this is an important point worth pausing to be sure you understand.
It is good to also meditate on the fact that Bhakti is the root of all good qualities. Bhakti means love. Love is the root of all good qualities. Look around you at people who are more and less loving in their character note their faults and good qualities. You will find that love really is the fountainhead of all good qualities and that without a loving heart other qualifications are merely skills similar to the expertise of a robot and used to bring about inauspiciousness.
Now let’s review the qualities that serve as milestones tangibly marking our progress towards effectively practicing Bhakti yoga.
How I will treat others:
- I will become no ones enemy
- I will consider no one my enemy
- I will forgive
- I won’t burden others
- I will never feel that others are a burden on me
- I will give allegiance to no faction or party
- I will be attached to no one
- I will embrace friends and enemies equally
- I will accept honor and dishonor equally
- I will accept praise and insults as the same thing
- I will be quiet
My own character:
- nothing is mine
- I am not really important
- sorrow and joy have the same merit to my heart
- comfort and discomforts like heat and cold are not important
- I never express happiness, distress, fear or anxiety
- I am never dissatisfied
- I feel no pains
- I experience no grief
- I have no desires
- I am clean and pure
- I have no needs
- I can do whatever needs to be done
- I never start big projects
- I don’t enjoy anything nor do I suffer
- I never do anything auspicious or inauspicious
- I am satisfied with whatever comes to me
- I don’t need a home
- My decisions are firm
My yoga
- I am always aware of a link to the divine
- I have unyielding determination to realize that link
- I use all my actions, thoughts and emotions to do so
H.H. Devamrita Swami: The Flesh Must Fail? Pt. 1
"To err is to be human" they say. The purport often is that we can never expect to completely control our senses—you see, only pride would delude us to think so.
Sensual failures are inbuilt into life, the theory goes. Accept it, expect to fail, while always believing in the divine mercy and clinging to it. This trust amidst assured waywardness is the real humility. In other words, all God's children, while falling into maya, should "keep the faith."
Folk mythology aside, how does the aspiring bhakti-yogi lose the taste for serving the material energy? Quite simply, just serve Krishna. The more you engage in His direct service, the less you'll have an inclination to surrender to His illusory energy.
The question arises: Since periodic urges to enjoy material nature demonstrate that we haven't achieved complete steadiness in bhakti and savored the full taste, then what is it that keeps us on the path, trying to advance?
Duty and determination are the essential factors. Discover for yourself the benefits in following the process of bhakti even when done simply because 'I must." You see, even the practitioner on the platform of injunction—"I have to do this because that's what the prescription says"—lives a life far superior to the undisciplined sense enjoyer.
Is it intelligence that the patient, the devotee seeking to recover from material desire, requires to push on, even by forcing oneself?
The patient is never intelligent, Prabhupada once explained:
"You cannot expect him to be intelligent. He must agree to the physician's directions. That is intelligence. He must know that he's diseased, he must follow the instruction of the physician. That much will help him."
In a diseased condition, how can we expect our intelligence to properly function? And if we are so competent, then why is it we became so sick? Yet, if we depend on the guidance of guru and shastra, we are brainy. Intelligence is to the degree that we agree to follow the transcendental medical instructions.
Determination in bhakti is not a cold, barren thing, though our tricky mind tells us so. Within the voluntary agreement and resolve, you'll find major beginnings of the genuine heartiness, warmth, and fulfillment you so inwardly long for--especially if you learn how to thrive in the association of dedicated devotees.

He Accepted
Toronto, Ontario
My day winded down with a walk through the park and with a frequent visitor to the temple who wanted to seriously take up spiritual life on a full-time basis, in other words become a monk. Knowing his personal situation I recommended that he take his time.
"Why not try 'monk for a weekend' first?", I suggested.
The person has a steady job and I personally don't believe in encouraging people towards making sudden jumps because based on experiences people often bounce back as fast as they came in for reasons of not being mentally prepared. There are, of course, exceptions to the rule. In this particular case it just may prove in time that the aspirant has a genuine calling.
In a flashback at looking at myself I will declare that I have had no regrets about my radical departure to monistic life. At age 20 I had a promising first year in college in fine arts. There was one month left to go to complete that semester and that first year. I made an abrupt decision one afternoon while walking on the shoulder of a road after due deliberation. I couldn't forget those guys, those monks that I met. I couldn't forget the books by Srila Prabhupada, those mystical works of literary art. The food. It was vegetarian and delicious. I was swept away by it all. It was all so natural for me.
I informed my art teacher about my decision. I packed my bags, went to the ashram in Toronto, moved in and never looked back. But that's my story.
"For the time being, hold on to what you have and keep Krishna in the centre," I advised my friend.
He accepted the advice.

Manoj, Melbourne, AU: 207. Srila Prabhupad lecture : Get out !
Lecture 1
Here is a summary of Srila Prabhupad’s lecture : SB 5.5.1, Bombay 1977
Lord Rsabhadeva told His sons: My dear boys, of all the living entities who have accepted material bodies in this world, one who has been awarded this human form should not work hard day and night simply for sense gratification, which is available even for dogs and hogs that eat stool. One should engage in penance and austerity to attain the divine position of devotional service. By such activity, one’s heart is purified, and when one attains this position, he attains eternal, blissful life, which is transcendental to material happiness and which continues forever.
Here we can see the duty of a father. A father’s job is to instruct his children on the duty of life so that they may not live like a hog working day and night for stool and sex. Human life is meant for tapasaya. In this material world, everyone is bound by the stringent laws of maya. One cannot violate the laws of maya. One can understand this principle from fire. It does not matter whether you are an innocent child or a mature adult, if you place you hand in fire, you will be burnt. Fire will burn anyone.
Every human must understand that they are not the body and that there will be a change of body after death. Learning the purpose of life from Shastra is the way not to misuse our human birth. But no one is interested in this topic of next birth. The first instruction from Lord Krishna in Bhagavad Gita is – You are Eternal.
Human birth is meant for one to undergo austerity and renunciation. Everyone should aim to be a brahmana and following them are the Kshatriyas, Vaishyas and Sudras. It’s a great science. We must be very careful not to be carried away by the waves of material nature.
“Why am I dying?” – this is an intelligent question that one must ask. But we are ignoring this vital question and people in general have adopted a lifestyle which will not lead to mukti. We must realize ourselves and attain our original form. Understand your true business in life by following the process of bhakti. Krishna recommends, “Always think of me”. If you always think of Krishna, you become a devotee. Everyone is a part and parcel of Krishna, eternally His servant. But when they want to enjoy without Krishna, then they become bound. So, be a bhakta and get out of this material world.
Yoga of Ecology, Bhakta Chris, USA: When Food Kills
From Nicholas Kristof at the New York Times
The deaths of 31 people in Europe from a little-known strain of E. coli have raised alarms worldwide, but we shouldn’t be surprised. Our food often betrays us.
Just a few days ago, a 2-year-old girl in Dryden, Va., died in a hospital after suffering bloody diarrhea linked to another strain of E. coli. Her brother was also hospitalized but survived.
Every year in the United States, 325,000 people are hospitalized because of food-borne illnesses and 5,000 die, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. That’s right: food kills one person every two hours.
Yet while the terrorist attacks of 2001 led us to transform the way we approach national security, the deaths of almost twice as many people annually have still not generated basic food-safety initiatives. We have an industrial farming system that is a marvel for producing cheap food, but its lobbyists block initiatives to make food safer.
Perhaps the most disgraceful aspect of our agricultural system — I say this as an Oregon farmboy who once raised sheep, cattle and hogs — is the way antibiotics are recklessly stuffed into healthy animals to make them grow faster.
The Food and Drug Administration reported recently that 80 percent of antibiotics in the United States go to livestock, not humans. And 90 percent of the livestock antibiotics are administered in their food or water, typically to healthy animals to keep them from getting sick when they are confined in squalid and crowded conditions.
The single state of North Carolina uses more antibiotics for livestock than the entire United States uses for humans.
This cavalier use of low-level antibiotics creates a perfect breeding ground for antibiotic-resistant pathogens. The upshot is that ailments can become pretty much untreatable.
The Infectious Diseases Society of America, a professional organization of doctors, cites the case of Josh Nahum, a 27-year-old skydiving instructor in Colorado. He developed a fever from bacteria that would not respond to medication. The infection spread and caused tremendous pressure in his skull.
Some of his brain was pushed into his spinal column, paralyzing him. He became a quadriplegic depending on a ventilator to breathe. Then, a couple of weeks later, he died.
There’s no reason to link Nahum’s case specifically to agricultural overuse, for antibiotic resistance has multiple causes that are difficult to unravel. Doctors overprescribe them. Patients misuse them. But looking at numbers, by far the biggest element of overuse is agriculture.
We would never think of trying to keep our children healthy by adding antibiotics to school water fountains, because we know this would breed antibiotic-resistant bacteria. It’s unconscionable that Big Ag does something similar for livestock.
Louise Slaughter, the only microbiologist in the United States House of Representatives, has been fighting a lonely battle to curb this practice — but industrial agricultural interests have always blocked her legislation.
“These statistics tell the tale of an industry that is rampantly misusing antibiotics in an attempt to cover up filthy, unsanitary living conditions among animals,” Slaughter said. “As they feed antibiotics to animals to keep them healthy, they are making our families sicker by spreading these deadly strains of bacteria.”
Vegetarians may think that they’re immune, but they’re not. E. coli originates in animals but can spill into water used to irrigate vegetables, contaminating them. The European E. coli outbreak apparently arose from bean sprouts grown on an organic farm in Germany.
One of the most common antibiotic-resistant pathogens is MRSA, which now kills more Americans annually than AIDS and adds hugely to America’s medical costs. MRSA has many variants, and one of the more benign forms now is widespread in hog barns and among people who deal with hogs. An article this year in a journal called Applied and Environmental Microbiology reported that MRSA was found in 70 percent of hogs on one farm.
Another scholarly journal reported that MRSA was found in 45 percent of employees working at hog farms. And the Centers for Disease Control reported this April that this strain of bacteria has now been found in a worker at a day care center in Iowa.
Other countries are moving to ban the feeding of antibiotics to livestock. But in the United States, the agribusiness lobby still has a hold on Congress.
The European outbreak should shake people up. “It points to the whole broken system,” notes Robert Martin of the Pew Environment Group.
We need more comprehensive inspections in the food system, more testing for additional strains of E. coli, and more public education (always wash your hands after touching raw meat, and don’t use the same cutting board for meat and vegetables). A great place to start reforms would be by banning the feeding of antibiotics to healthy livestock.

This proves the law of relativity. Everywhere this law of relativity is working. You do not think, because you cannot stand in the midst of the water of the ocean, therefore nobody can stand
