H.G. Sankarshan das Adhikari, USA: Wednesday 29 June 2011--The Whole World is Waiting--and--If Chanting Hare Krishna is the Only Way
bb A daily broadcast of the Ultimate Self Realization Course Wednesday 29 June 2011 The Supreme Personality of Godhead, Lord Sri Krishna, and His eternal consort, Srimati Radharani are enjoying transcendental pastimes in the topmost planet of the spiritual world, Sri Goloka Vrindavan. They are beckoning us to rejoin them. (Click on photo to see a larger image.) Our Mission: To help everyone awaken their original Krishna consciousness, which is eternal, full of knowledge and full of bliss. Such a global awakening will, in one stroke, solve all the problems of the world society bringing in a new era of unprecedented peace and prosperity for all. May that day, which the world so desperately needs, come very soon. We request you to participate in this mission by reviving your dormant Krishna consciousness and assisting us in spreading this science all over the world. Dedicated with love to ISKCON Founder-Acharya: His Divine Grace A.C. Bhaktivedanta Swami Prabhupada, our beloved spiritual master, and to you, our dear readers. Today's Thought: The Whole World is Waiting Uploaded from Sydney, Australia The present world civilization is drowning in an ocean of nescience. People are so much deluded that they don't even realize that they are suffering. Even though they are in a miserable condition being dragged to old age and death by the insurmountable wheel of time, they imagine that they are happy by gratifying their senses. But since the happiness of the senses is only temporary and because it does not touch the actual self, no one is actually satisfied. What this means is that the whole world is waiting for the devotees of the Krishna consciousness movement to deliver them from the quagmire into which they have so deeply sunk. Sankarshan Das Adhikari Working for the Awakening of the World 19 June 2011--Klang, Malaysia http://www.backtohome.com/images/2011-Spring/Klang.Lect.3.JPG Answers According to the Vedic Version: Question: If Chanting Hare Krishna is the Only Way I have been wandering if chanting the Hare Krishna mahamantra (among other things) is the only way back to Krishnaloka, the transcendental kingdom of God, in this Kali yuga, the materialistic age of Kali, why didn't Krishna give this direct instruction in the Bhagavad-gita? Thank you in advance for your answer. Daniel Answer: Chanting Any Name of God is the Only Way Chanting the names of God is described in the Vedic literature as the only means of deliverance in this age. Although the Vedic scriptures inform us that the Hare Krishna mantra is the most effective means of deliverance, they do not tell us that chanting Hare Krishna is the only way to attain spiritual perfection. One can chant any name of God with pure love and attain spiritual perfection in this age. I do not know how you can ask why Krishna did not instruct us in the Bhagavad-gita to chant His name. He directly mentions in the ninth chapter that we should chant His name 24 hours daily. Since all names of God are names of Krishna, this instruction can refer to chanting any name of God. ISKCON Melbourne, AU: Today's Darsana
Did you know that...
"...Sometimes in great happiness Lord Jagannatha makes a loud concert with His flute in the groves on the banks of the Yamuna.
He is like a bumblebee tasting the beautiful lotuslike faces of the cowherd damsels of Vraja, and great personalities such as Laksmi, Siva, Brahma, Indra, and Ganesa worship His lotus feet.
May that Jagannatha Swami be the object of my vision..."?
That's what the Sri Jagannathastakam tells us!
May that Jagannatha Swami be the object of our vision through His daily darsana.
Japa Group: Present In His Holy Names
There are two conceptions: the physical conception and the vibration conception. So physical conception is temporary. The vibration conception is eternal. Just like we are... relishing the vibration of Krishna’s teachings. So by vibration He is present. As soon as we chant Hare Krishna or chant Bhagavad-gita or Srimad Bhagavatam, He is present immediately by His vibration. He’s absolute.
Your servant,
Aruna devi

Liquid Beauty
Calgary, Alberta
Last night our actor devotees, Laghu Hari and Godrumagoura, presented the play, "Liquid Beauty". It was a new rendition of an ISKCON classic which I helped to script. It was presented to a group of seventy people crammed in the basement of Radha and Svasti's home.
Here is the story as presented by our guru, Srila Prabhupada, found in the book, "Science of Self Realization".
Once a man who was very powerful and strongly built but whose character was very doubtful fell in love with a beautiful girl. The girl was not only beautiful in appearance but also saintly in character, and as such she did not like the man's advances. The man, however, was insistent because of his lustful desires and therefore the girl requested him to wait only seven days, and she set a time after that when he could meet her. The man agreed, and with high expectations he began waiting for the appointed time.
The saintly girl, however, in order to manifest the real beauty of absolute truth, adopted a method very instructive. She took very strong doses of laxatives and purgatives and for seven days she continually passed loose stool and vomited all that she ate. However, she stored all the loose stool and vomit in suitable pots. As a result of the purgatives, the so-called beautiful girl became lean and thin like a skeleton, her complexion turned blackish and her beautiful eyes sank into the sockets of her skull. Thus at the appointed hour she waited anxiously to receive the eager man.
The man appeared on the scene well dressed and well behaved and asked the ugly girl he found waiting there about the beautiful girl he was to meet. The man could not recognize the girl he saw as the same beautiful girl for whom he was asking, indeed, although she repeatedly asserted her identity, because of her pitiable condition he was unable to recognize her.
At last the girl told the powerful man that she had separated the ingredients of her beauty and stored them in pots. She also told him that he could enjoy those juices of beauty. When the mundane poetic man asked to see these juices of beauty, he was directed to the store of loose stool and liquid vomit, which were emanating an unbearably bad smell. Thus the whole story of the beauty-liquid was disclosed to him. Finally by the grace of the saintly girl, this man of low character was able to distinguish between the shadow and the substance, and thus he came to his senses.
This man's position was similar to the position of every one of us who is attracted by false, material beauty. The girl mentioned above had a beautifully developed material body in accordance with the desires of her mind, but in fact she was apart from that temporary material body and mind. She was in fact a spiritual spark and so also was the lover who was attracted by her false skin.

Widening Your Consciousness
Calgary, Alberta
The community of devotees here enjoyed the premiere of our bhakti variety show. Slightly over an hour long, our no-name show was delivered by our little drama troupe, unofficially known as Swami Productions, to congregants at the Radha Madhav Cultural Centre on Edmonton Trail. They laughed, cried, clapped and stomped. What was normally allotted as a time for pravachan (discourse or talk) was actually replaced with drama, comedy and dance. The effect was powerful. Philosophical truths and devotional sentiments struck brains and hearts.
I was restless after the show. Adrenaline, I guess. I used to walk from the downtown, the Cultural Centre's address, to the NE of Calgary off of 68th Ave, via Memorial Avenue, I guess you could say I scouted a small portion of Calgary's endless suburbs.
The city has a vision, otherwise, it wouldn't plan to have such a wide median between the existing road (68th) and the sidewalk. Clearly, city planners anticipate expansion of the road. Since the 70's this oil rich province and now with the discovery of the controversial tar sands of Alberta's north, there has been incredible economic growth. The prairies have unlimited space for growth. As long as oil is sought after with a persistent supply and demand, Alberta, the province, will continue to boom.
I would like to see expansion but of a different nature. Widening the scope of a higher consciousness is what Alberta could use. Some of the remarks from the youth affectionately lodged towards me were, "Hey Orange Man", "Buddha" and "Peace be with you, Man!"
As trivial as these remarks may be, their good nature behind them can indicate that expansion has begun.

A Teenager Wants To Grow
Brampton Ontario
The young teenager didn't want to be left out. His two older sisters were taking the bold step towards receiving diksha, a spiritual initiation. I agreed, as their candidate guru, to arrange for the future procedure for July 17th to be conducted at the Toronto Islands. One of the sisters, Patsy, has a career, and is married. Nalini, is single, and just a bit younger, has been following in the footsteps of her Dad, in business.
Their younger bro., Sanatan, didn't want to be left behind. He has been chanting a prescribed 16 rounds on his meditational beads for some time, a prerequisite for diksha. In addition from any intoxicants, does not gamble, or engage in illicit sex, and avoids eating meat, fish or eggs.
When I met Sanatan's father whose name I remember clearly as Willy back in the early ninties there was some resistence to tossing the meat out of the diet. Literally "throw out" were words strongly suggested by a friend of mine, who told Willy of his freshly bought chicken lying in the fridge's shelf. Willy reluctantly took the bird's dead body out of the fridge and tossed it in the garbage. As soon as the coast was clear, Willy, who was a new comer to Krishna Conciousness, went to the supermarket to purchase another chicken when my friend left the home.
It took sometime for Willy and family to adjust but gradually such dead animal body parts were kicked out of the diet. At the time of conversion Sanatan wasn't even conceived. To this day he doesn't know what chicken tastes like, let alone a drumstick. Lucky him.
"Why can't I jump on the band wagon with my sisters?" he thought.
So with encouragement from his dad, now Vaishnav by name, his mom, Janaki, Sanatan asked if he could be initiatied along with his sisters. After analyzing his situation I said, "Yes, why not?"
Sanatan was happy that he would now have officially, and in spirit a guru. According to the Gita to advance spiritual life one seeks the aid of the guru.

About Love + A Couple
Mississauga, Ontario
I am reviewing a book, "Heart and Soul Connection" by the Grihastha Vision Team which is a Vaishnava guide to marriage, service and love. It will be released in the coming months. In a section planned by Uttama Dasi on the subject of arranged marriages I found something interesting she said regarding a study on arranged marriages.
"A study by Dr. Robert Epstein published in the January/February 2010 issue of Scientific American Mind had some interesting observations. Among other things, it noted that in most countries marriage relationships are entered into based on bodily attraction and feelings of love. Unfortunately, those feelings decreased rapidly within 18 months. In many arranged marriages of India, he discovered that although feelings of love were not a component in the beginning of an arranged marriage, those feelings quickly grew. It is understood that if compatible persons are matched, love can develop. He observed that after 10 years of arranged marriage, the feelings of love were often twice as strong as the more common types of marriage that had been based on initial "chemistry".
Uttama remarks that this demonstrates that love can develop from mutual service.
Mutual service, not necessarily an arranged marriage but compatibility -- yes, is the case of a young married couple, Vibhu and Shastyna, who invited me to their new home in Mississauga. It's a thirty year old building but has been nicely cosmetically treated by Vibhu. What some colours in the form of paint will do?
In any event, here is a sweet couple, who both liked kirtan, Krishna and gulabjamoons (an Indian sweet). They've been married now for two years and the relationship is "good" says Vibhu who drove me and two devotees back to the ashram after a fine ceremony, a blessing for their new home.
I'm really happy for them.

Tinsel in Toronto
Toronto, Ontario
This weekend the International Indian Film Academy awards will be held in the city. It's the first time Bollywood's equivalent to the Oscars are held outside of India. Canada is excited about it. The event promises to pump millions into the economy. Excuse my monk sarcasm but I imagine there will be glitzy pagentry, like Hollywood, and will not do much for boosting enlightenment. I wonder if ever there will be awards for art some day?
How do I know about what's on? Well you catch glimpses of it here and there. I've heard there are other versions of Hollywood in the world. Pardon me, but the cynical swami won't hold back on cursing those mechanisms that promote the in-your-face NO NO's that any _ollywood can produce. Frankly I can be more entertained by staring at a piece of birchwood, maple wood or oakwood or a piece of driftwood. Hollywood/Bollywood, NO! I feel relieved of the craving to play into the tinsel trap.
Thank God I've got my own superstars, such as Devamrta Swami and Baddha Hari, who are in town for purposes of more wholesome presentations of bhakti and kirtan. I also have my own outlet for artistic expression. After a lip-smacking meal with the two guests we sat down for a dance presentation by Godruma Gaura based on Chaitanya's verses. Later in the evening along with Gaura and Laghu Hari of South Africa we laid out our dress rehearsal for the play "Nandulal", the story of a blind saint. The presentations have moral fibre which is a lot more than high budget films of porn and corn can offer. One day we might be able to give vaishnav arts a chance, a chance to hit mainstream.
If by some fluke I meet a Bollywood megastar this weekend I will be most happy to talk to that person about the benefit of spiritual contents in art forms and in one's life.

Pankajanghri Prabhu speaking on Pure Devotional Service at Pune Yatra, 27 January 2007
‘All you have is this moment. And now it has gone. How can you use that moment? That is spiritual life. That is material life. There is Krishna and there is Maya – side by side. So, we have to follow what is favourable and what is unfavourable. Is it Krishna’s pleasure? Is it my pleasure?
The sincere endeavour of the devotee leads to prema. That is not important. What is important is if we give ourselves – right now – to the mission of Lord Chaitanya. You’ve got service – right now. There’s nothing you can do about getting ragatmika. Just serve. Don’t try to see God. Act in such a way that He’ll see you. It might not happen this life. But, by Srila Prabhupada’s mercy, we can go Back to Godhead.
Whether there’s bhakti or no bhakti – don’t worry. You’re lucky. It’s not such a mystical thing. You have this moment right now. Use it. There are nine processes of devotional service. That is perfection. There’s nothing better than what you are doing right now. So…we should be satisfied.
Try to execute His order – against all odds (everything’s against you in this world). Everything is the best thing you can be doing at that time – if you’re following the programme that you’ve been given by the previous acaryas.’

Subhavilasa das ACBSP, Toronto, CA: Where is even the Basic Etiquette?
"Basic etiquette must be followed when another devotee is preaching. He should not be suddenly interrupted unless there is something urgent."
Okay...this is a family blog site and once in a while we should be able to air a pet peeve or two, so bear with me...
I will paint the picture. At our local ISKCON centre, there is a out of town sanyasi speaking. He is delivering a outstanding lecture that is reeling it in and devotees as well as new comers/not so often comers are clearly taking it in. I need back support so I find a corner and I'm enjoying the lecture. There is always the constant "hum" from the hallway that you get used to...at least people have stepped out to do their talking business there.
But then a cell phone rings and the reciever actually takes the call hurring into the hall. There is the restless kid. The discussion that just can't wait. Then as it gets closer to prasadam time the flood gates open up. More and more people are sitting here and squeezing there. Then they are discussing this and that. They are calling out to their loved ones to join them in the last 2 square feet left between them and the prasadam tables. Oblivous to their surroundings it is okay to even holler. And the stream of the lecture is long gone...at least it is for me in my particular spot. The words of wisdom by a person that has dedicated his life to deliver these words on behalf of Srila Prabhupada are dismissed by these few.
Oblivious to what the missed at least they are conscious of the prasadam....and that is the mercy of Gauranga! If they cannot recieve His mercy in the form of the discourse, they can still recieve it in the form of prasadam. Gauranga! Gauranga!

Kurma dasa, AU: My Kitchen Equipment - Spun Out, Man
Today I thought I'd commence a series of blog entries highlighting some of my kitchen equipment. If you're just starting a serious kitchen at home, or are just interested in seeing what bits of equipment other people have in their home, you might find this inspirational.
The other day I foraged my tiny patio garden for herbs and salad leaves to make a green risotto. It's winter, and most of my herbs and greens have died down. The patio garden photo above was taken in early summer last year. Anyway, there's always something growing out there.
I managed to find some decent rainbow chard (silverbeet), a last habonero chili that was hiding under foliage, two varieties of baby lettuce leaves, two varieties of rocket, some spearmint, vietnamese mint, some basil, marjoram, thyme and oregano, and some parsley.
This is a salad spinner. My old friend Tracey gave it to me as a present years ago when I was living in Perth. She was mad on Tupperware, and I was happy to receive this practical item from their range.
I filled the base with water, plunged the greens inside, sloshed them about and drained them. I repeated this until there was no more debris, then transferred the greens to the spinning basket, popped on the lid and spun away.
Centrifugal force spun out all the water and the greens were left completely dry. This piece of equipment is essential if you want to make a perfect salad and you don't always buy so-called prewashed leaves. I subscribe to the 'wash everything' mindset, so Mr Spinner gets well used.
Akrura das, Gita Coaching: AN INTERVIEW WITH AKRURA DASA IN LIMA, PERU
Q: How would you call yourself in relation to your devotee care service?
Akrura dasa: Devotees' Success Coach.
Q: Why?
A: Because my service is helping devotees succeed in all areas of their lives. It is based on a Vedic principle sarve sukhino bhavantu, that we learned from Srila Prabhupada. He said that leader's duty is to make everyone under his leadership happy. I am not a leader, but I do serve as a spiritual guide and the same principle applies.
Q: Which devotees do you coach?
A: I coach devotees of all ages and genders, from 5 to 95 years of age. Some of them are leaders, preachers, managers, spiritual guides, coaches, and parents.I welcome anyone who wants to stop whining and start winning, or go from victim to victor.
Q: How did you start this service?
A: I started 10 years ago when I learned about coaching from the professional books and audio programs. I got professional coach training in England and now I am using it to help devotees succeed. I mainly use the success principles from the Bhagavad-gita As It Is to coach devotees. I started because it was painful for me to see that many of our devotees are not happy, although we have the best process and the best philosophy on the planet. I believed that it is possible to help devotees become more happy and more productive if we provide better support, care, guidance and inspiration.
Q: What is Gita Coaching?
A: Gita Coaching is devotee care and guidance in action. Gita Coaching is a process of personal assistance meant to empower spiritual heroes. Within every devotee there is a spiritual hero, but he is now sleeping. Gita Coaching process helps that hero to wake up. According to the Bhagavad-gita As It Is, every soul is amazing (Bg 2.29). That means that especially every devotee is amazing.
Q: What inspires you to serve the devotees in this way?
A: I think I have been blessed by Krsna to like His devotees, or anyone who is trying to approach Him in some way. I think they are rare on this planet and they are special. So it is my honor and pleasure to assist them on their journey back to Krsna. I also like other people, because ultimately everyone is a child of God, and everyone is dear to Him. But those who are already trying to come closer to Him especially inspire me to serve them.
Q: How do you see the future of ISKCON (The International Society for Krsna Consciousness)?
A: I think it is very bright, because devotee care and guidance is becoming increasingly important in more and more places, temples and yatras. The devotee care approach will create more servant leaders or spiritual guides that we really need in order to have caring communities. I believe that only a caring community can flourish in all respects.
Q: Could you give us some success principles from the Bhagavad-gita As It Is?
A: Srila Prabhupada's Gita is an ocean of success principles, ideas, tools and solutions. I read it daily and use it daily in helping devotees succeed. Gita is a holistic success book. It gives many principles of success for all areas of life. How to attain peace of mind, clarity, and confidence. How to see what happens to you more intelligently and how to react wisely. It gives health, nutrition and balance tips for the body. It enlightens us about quality relationships. It teaches us how to speak and communicate. It advocates uplifiting of our thinking, feeling and willing – the main functions of the mind. There are many, many more.
Q: What is preventing devotees to benefit from these principles?
A: They don't read the Gita enough, or they don't read it in a structured way. You can do a topical study in the Gita and become an expert in the very thing that is your current challenge or a problem. Then instead of having that problem, you will help others with it. This is called a turnaround expert – you turn a problem into an opportunity. Devotees also don't use the Gita to solve their problems or achieve their goals. Either they don't see the connection or they don't know how. Gita Coaching helps you apply the Gita more effectively.
Q: What excites you the most about helping devotees succeed?
A: When I see that they get a new hope, new determination , fresh perspective and a powerful personal strategy to keep moving forward in their lives – closer to Krsna. This usually happens when they stop blaming anyone and start taking responsibility and being grateful for what they have. What excites me the most is when they become caring leaders, preachers, spiritual guides, coaches or some kind of caregivers.
Q: How do you know what to say and what principle or a tool to give them, that will best help them succeed?
A: I learn a lot all the time, both from the sastra and from the professionals. Preparation brings inspiration. The more I know, the more I believe Krsna will inspire me from within to say the right thing. And also, when you love someone, God gives you intelligence how to benefit them in an optimal way. It is a highly intuitive service. Many times they discover what will help them the most, and I just facilitate that process.
Q: How is your Gita Coaching in Peru?
A: I have 5-6 session a day. It is great! I like devotees here very much. They are ready for coaching. Some of them will become spiritual guides, coaches and caregivers.
Q: Apart from Gita Coaching, what else are you doing?
A: I am teaching common sense that is not a common practice and I am showing the obvious that people do not see. I recommend devotees to choose to be creative instead of confused, and impressed instead of depressed. I claim that happiness is 95 percent your choice and 5 percent circumstances. And I like to ask devotees:
If not you – who? If not now – when?
Nityananda Chandra Das, Dallas TX: Now eternally conditioned, now eternally liberated
As long as the jīva takes full shelter of the Supreme Lord he remains a resident of the spiritual planets, but when he forgets the innate spiritual knowledge about the Lord he is placed outside the transcendental realm. The jīva is compared to a ray of the sun, but under the cloud of maya, or the illusory energy, his conditioned state is an unconstitutional and hence unnatural term of existence. The jīva exists to support and participate in the Supreme Lord's transcendental pastimes, but his marginal nature makes him vulnerable and can bring him under maya's spell, to suffer the pangs of repeated birth and death. But as soon as the individual spiritual spark awakens to realise his original self, the dark mist of ignorance, or maya, dissipate, and the long suffering of repeated birth and death at last comes to a halt. He regains his true spiritual identity.
The innumerable living entities go through, varied stages of existence, now eternally conditioned, now eternally liberated. When the jīva rejects the Supreme Lord he becomes forever ensnared in matter. But again aspiring for His shelter, the curtain of maya that separates the jīva from his eternal transcendental identity is forever removed, and he is immediately restored to his original pure self.

Madhava Ghosh dasa, New Vrndavan, USA: Jackie Evancho: Proof of Reincarnation?
While those limited to the provincialism of country music and rock and all its variations may not have heard of her, Jackie Evancho is taking the opera and classical music world by soft storm.
Here is Jackie singing my favorite song, Schubert’s Ave Maria. Try to imagine how great it would sound in a higher quality reproduction.
Although only 11 she sings with a depth of emotion of a mature adult. She is billed as the voice of an angel. When I first heard her sing I thought she had to be lip syncing because that sound couldn’t be coming out of that little girl.
Though extremely talented and well coached, that alone doesn’t explain it. In her own words, she says “When I start to sing I get overwhelmed by a powerful force and I feel comfortable and happy. ” Now to me that sounds like a soul that has been here before and bringing its emotional memories to the moment, memories from a lifetime, not limited to 11 years this time around.
Check out highlights of the concert she did for PBS. Hint, unless you have a heart of stone, bring Kleenex.
BTW, if someone wanted to send me a copy of her CD, I would accept it.

Devadeva Mirel, Alachua, USA: Recipe : Tofu Fish Sticks
Sometimes I get nostalgic for America.
Not the America I live in now, but the America I grew up in. It was Provincial. United nationally by 4 television stations, regionally by just a few supermarkets and locally through one’s school, church or pop warner football association. There was no think globally, act locally.
Instead, there were fish sticks.
I never liked them. Actually, quite hated them. Flaky stinky fishy frozen ick.
But still, I ate them.
While watching The Brady Bunch, The Partridge Family, My Three Sons and I Dream of Jeanie.
I ate them because it seemed so damn American. Eating them just seemed like something I needed to do to keep my citizenship. Much like consuming slices of American cheese and little hot aluminum tins of pot pie. Did I really have a choice in the matter? Who would hear my voice in a democracy of people all buying and eating the same food?
I hated fish sticks but I ate them anyway.
So I decided to make tofu ones for my kids!
Of course, they do not live in the American Gulag of my childhood. They have no television channels, think palak paneer as American as pasta or spanokopita. Their food supply is not hydrogenated nor is it colored to make it resemble hazmat suits. I feed them pretty natural, homemade stuff. Nothing tastes like a freezer. I know what ingredients are in things. Because I am the one cooking the things. And I can leave out or substitute ingredients the kids dislike or favor. So everything I make should be a hit, right?
It’s true. The children wouldn’t even try them. They like tofu pakoras, but this was getting the stink face from the start. Not even a nibble from those two. Next time, I won’t call them “fish sticks.”
Recipe : Tofu Fish Sticks
Ingredients
- 1 lb. extra firm tofu
- 1.5 cups cornmeal
- 1 tablespoon paprika
- 1 teaspoon hing
- 1 sheet nori, ground
- 2 teaspoon salt
- 1 teaspoon hing
- 1/2 teaspoon course ground pepper
- 1 cup milk
- 1 cup white flour
- 1/2 teaspoon citric acid
- oil
Directions:
- Combine flour, spices, salt and water to make a batter. Dip each piece of tofu in batter.
- Dredge batter dipped tofu through lightly salted plate of cornmeal.
- If baking, place on parchment paper and bake @ 400 degrees F for 15-20 minutes. I misted mine with olive oil before placing in oven.
- If frying (highly recommended), shallow fry in oil or shortening in a cast iron skillet at medium heat, turning after a few minutes on each side.
- Serve hot with tart tomato sauce.
- Preheat the oven to 400º. Line a baking sheet with parchment paper and coat parchment with olive oil. Set aside.
- Combine the cornmeal or flour, sliced almonds, paprika, kelp, salt, onion and garlic powder, dill weed, and black pepper in a blender, and blend on high until most of the almonds have been turned into a coarse meal, with a few larger pieces of almond remaining. Pour the mixture into a wide baking dish or pie plate.
- Place the plain soymilk into a bowl and set next to the cornmeal mixture.
- With a sharp knife, cut the tofu into even slices just under ½-inch wide. Cut tofu out into fish sticks, or use a fish-shaped cookie cutter to cut out tofu fish.
- Working with one piece at a time, dip the tofu into the plain soymilk, then toss gently in the cornmeal mixture to coat evenly. Place on the prepared baking sheet. When all the tofu fish are on the baking sheet, sprinkle them with olive oil.
- Bake for 15 minutes, then turn the tofu fish over and bake for an additional 15 minutes, or until crispy (if making tater tots, place them on the baking sheet for the last 15 minutes).
- Remove tofu fish onto a plate, and squeeze some fresh lemon juice evenly over the tofu.
ISKCON Toronto, Canada: Maha-Harinama Party on Canada Day!!!
We are inviting everyone to join us on Friday, July 1st as we hit the streets and share kirtan, sweets, books and smiles with Torontonians during Canada day festivities in downtown Toronto. This is also a great way to inform people about the upcoming Festival of India (Ratha-Yatra) by handing out cards!!!
The plan is to meet at the temple at 1pm and we will then head downtown for a grand street party with kirtan accompanied by wild drumming, singing and dancing! We will be back at the temple by 4pm where a delicious meal awaits us!
A special request goes out to EVERYONE to dress as colourfully as possible, in full devotional attire, as we want to amaze Torontonians with the beauty of Krsna consciousness, both with our appearance and with our smiles! If any of the ladies are interested in getting gopi-dots (traditional face painting) done, please come by earlier to the temple!
We're looking forward to seeing you there!

Although the six qualities education, austerity, wealth, beauty, youth and heritage are for the highly elevated, one who is proud of possessing them becomes blind, and thus he loses his good sense and cannot appreciate the glories of great personalities.

ISKCON Toronto, Canada: Snana-Yatra this Sunday! ***NOTE: BATHING WILL TAKE PLACE FROM 4:30PM-6:00PM***
A sure sign that the annual Festival of India (Ratha-Yatra) is just around the corner (July 16-17, 2011) is the annual Jagannatha Snana-Yatra festival! Snana-Yatra, a wonderful festival, wherein Lord Jagannatha, Lord Balarama and Lady Subhadra will be bathed amidst amazing kirtan and chanting!
After the bathing ceremony (Snana-Yatra), Lord Jagannātha apparently becomes sick. He is therefore removed to His private quarters, where no one can see Him. Actually, during this period the body of the Jagannātha Deity is repainted, this is called nava-yauvana.
During the Ratha-Yatra Festival on July 16th, Lord Jagannātha will once again come before the public. Thus for thirteen days after the bathing ceremony, Lord Jagannātha is not visible to any visitors! Don't miss out this last opportunity to see Lord Jagannatha before his grand Ratha-Yatra festival!
***IMPORTANT: This year the bathing ceremony will begin at 4:30 PM and continue to 6:00 PM. Following the bathing, Lord Jagannatha's altar will close at 6:00 PM. Anyone wishing to have a final darshan of Lord Jagannatha, Baladeva and Subhadra must come before 6:00 PM.***

Krishna Dharma dasa, UK: Dance your way to a perfect body
Anyone looking for a get-rich-quick opportunity could do a lot worse than devising a new slimming scheme. It’s a boom industry these days. The latest sure fire method of shedding those unwanted pounds is Zumba dancing, the hot new craze from Brazil. Halls up and down the country are packed out as this frantic paced Latin dance routine attracts more and more perspiring followers.
It’s hardly surprising that such enterprises are thriving. Recent figures reveal that over 60% of Britons are obese or overweight. The problem is threatening to spiral out of control. Obesity expert Professor Tony Leeds says, The UK’s obesity problem has grown so much now that nearly a million obese Britons may be eligible for weight-reduction surgery.” And at over £10,000 an operation that is simply out of the question for the tottering NHS. Perhaps we will start getting prescriptions for Zumba instead.
Obesity is obviously a huge health problem, and for those so afflicted it is also a serious image issue. Not many of us like the chubby look, especially when it’s time to slip, or rather squeeze, into the swimming costume. We want to be attractive, particularly to the opposite sex, and in pursuit of that ideal are ready to devote hours of our hard pressed time pounding away in workouts of one type or another.
Like any endeavour we undertake, it is about finding happiness. We want that head turning form because we believe ourselves to be the body and hence we also believe that happiness comes from bodily pleasures, the highest of which is generally found in sex.
Spiritual practitioners (the real ones) take a different view. They aim to abjure this pleasure in favour of finding the superior joy of self-realisation. An aspiring transcendentalist sees the demands of the senses as a problem that needs to be overcome. The fleeting pleasure of sex, which drives so many of mans’ endeavours—some even say all of them—is a clear case in point. A cool headed analysis of the matter, which is not always easy to achieve, will conclude that sex desire is in fact nothing more than an agitation of the mind and body. We are going along peacefully enough and suddenly, perhaps due to some stimulus thrust upon us by the media, or a vision of some god or goddess in human form, we are cast into the throes of lust. It is certainly a disturbance, especially when we decide to set about trying to satisfy that urge. So much time, money and effort is generally required, and the results are often not as pleasant as we had hoped. And of course it is a complete distraction from the pursuit of higher spiritual happiness.
Sensual indulgence also reinforces the false ego, the misconception that we are material products. “I will be happy by eating, drinking and having sex” rests upon the assumption that I the person am the body. By remaining fixed in this concept we not only deny ourselves the far greater happiness of spiritual bliss, but we leave ourselves open to all the miseries that afflict the body. “I am enjoying material pleasure” is one side of a coin which has “I am suffering agony” as its other side. They are inseparable.
Lust is anyway never satisfied. It just goes on demanding more attention and the more we try to sate it the more it increases, like a fire fed with fuel. This is because it has its roots in the unlimited propensity of the soul to love God. The Bhagavad-gita informs us that our desire for sex is in fact a perversion of our original divine love for Krishna. Filtered through the false ego it becomes a hankering for material affection. But when we experience the real ego of knowing ourselves to be the loving servants of Krishna, we hanker only for his affection.
Only that affectionate relationship with Krishna can truly satisfy us. Our tendency to overeat, over-sex and over everything else is a vain attempt to achieve the intense joy that is found when we fully unite with God.
This is what we are all trying to find, eternal love with no trace of selfishness. And our eternal spiritual form is also the perfect body we so much desire, divinely attractive and free of all afflictions (and not an ounce of fat).
So why not expend our energy finding that joy rather than trying to attain the impossible in the shape of perfect material happiness? And if Zumba is your thing you can even dance your way to a spiritual body. There’s no charge for the daily sessions down at your local temple, and while you are absorbed in the ecstasy of dancing for Krishna you will enjoy the side benefit of losing that excess flab.

I spoke to my mum on the phone yesterday and she was upset that she feels disconnected from what I’m doing, so far from home. It’s definitely the case that even with the ease of connection in our digital age, without making the effort, it’s all too easy to feel totally estranged. I blame myself for not working harder to share with the world what I’m seeing and thinking and experiencing. Here’s some windows for my loved ones – a little peek into the small things I’m gathering over days here. And I promise i’ll try harder.
Manoj, Melbourne, AU: 211. Srila Prabhupad Lecture 5 : Understanding “Davanala”
A summary of my understanding of Prabhupad’s lecture .
SB 5.6.8
Vrndhavan 30 Nov 1976
While He was wandering about, a wild forest fire began. This fire was caused by the friction of bamboos, which were being blown by the wind. In that fire, the entire forest near Kutakacala and the body of Lord Rsabhadeva were burnt to ashes.
No one goes to the forest to set up a fire. This is because of the friction between trees is caused by the strong wind. This material world is compared to this example. Nobody wants trouble even though you may make arrangements to live comfortably. The only way to get out of this situation is through the mercy of Krishna only. The fire in the forest can be well extinguished when it rains. Krishna’s sea of mercy and mercy cloud of Krishna can extinguish the fire of material existence. This mercy cloud is guru who is authorized and is a genuine representative of Krishna. You cannot get Krishna by studying Vedas. But if you go to Krishna’s confident and favourite servant, then you can make Krishna your property.
There is no distinction between a guru and Lord Krishna. This can be understood in the way we treat an agent or a messenger of a very powerful person. You treat this person exactly like the way you treat the owner. This messenger does not say he is the king or owner. But he is honoured like the owner. In our temple, we have a prayer which we should always sing everyday which talks about this principle :
samsara-davanala-lidha-loka-
tranaya karunya-ghanaghanatwam
praptasya kalyana-gunarnavasya
vande guroh sri-charanaravindam
The spiritual master is receiving benediction from the ocean of mercy. Just as a cloud pours water on a forest fire to extinguish it, so the spiritual master delivers the materially afflicted world by extinguishing the blazing fire of material existence. I offer my respectful obeisances unto the lotus feet of such a spiritual master, who is an ocean of auspicious qualities.
Krsna says, ” You are my very dear friend and hence I am talking to you this confidential message. Don’t waste your time, Give up everything and Just surrender to me”. This is the authoritative process. You will not get any happiness otherwise. This is real religion. A guru is a person who has received this confidential message. Shastra does not change because it is perfect no matter what the age is. A Sadhu follows this Shastra and hence he also does not change. And a guru also does not change because he is following the Shastra and Sadhu.
When there is a catastrophe in the world, the sinners suffer the most. Just like a snake who suffers the most when there is a forest fire. When we preach Krishna Consciousness with the regulative principles, the outside people find this a dangerous activity, finds fault and gives trouble to the devotees. This is like an envious snake. In fact such snakes are better than an envious man. All that Jesus did was talk about God and he was crucified. Devotional service is not sitting comfortably in a place and discussing Vedanta. The real activity is preaching to dangerous people. Such a devotee is under the protection of Krishna. Such a person is an authorized and powerful agent of Krishna.
Ananda Subramanian, Iowa, USA: H.H.Radhanath Swami meets the President
H.H.Radhanath Swami (my spiritual master) has recently met the President of the USA Barack Obama in a private meeting in Florida. This happened on June 13 2011. More information can be found here.
It is said in the scriptures that a moment's association with a pure soul can award one liberation from birth and death. Even by the action of touching a pure soul, one advances spiritually. We can see Mr. Obama touching H.H.Radhanath Swami. I hope Mr.Obama took advantage of this meeting.

The Doughnut Plant is definitely destination dining, a boutiquey food start-up rooted in natural goodness before gourmet was branded as slow, local and clean.
