H.G. Sankarshan das Adhikari, USA: Tuesday 12 July 2011--Become an Acharya--and--Bless Me with Missionary Spirit

A daily broadcast of the Ultimate Self Realization Course Tuesday 12 July 2011 The Supreme Personality of Godhead, Lord Sri Krishna, and His eternal consort, Srimati Radharani are enjoying transcendental pastimes in the topmost planet of the spiritual world, Sri Goloka Vrindavan. They are beckoning us to rejoin them. (Click on photo to see a larger image.) Our Mission: To help everyone awaken their original Krishna consciousness, which is eternal, full of knowledge and full of bliss. Such a global awakening will, in one stroke, solve all the problems of the world society bringing in a new era of unprecedented peace and prosperity for all. May that day, which the world so desperately needs, come very soon. We request you to participate in this mission by reviving your dormant Krishna consciousness and assisting us in spreading this science all over the world. Dedicated with love to ISKCON Founder-Acharya: His Divine Grace A.C. Bhaktivedanta Swami Prabhupada, our beloved spiritual master, and to you, our dear readers. Today's Thought: Become An Acharya Uploaded from Los Angeles, California USA On Sunday 10 July 2011 in Honolulu, Hawaii I gave a lecture on Bhagavad-gita 3.21. This is verse is most profound because it describes how someone who is an ideal example of Krishna consciousness can inspire the world to take up Krishna consciousness. From this verse we can understand, that if we have any genuine love for our planetary brothers and sisters, we will constantly strive to the best of our abilities to be pure devotees of Krishna so that our examples will have a delivering impact on these poor souls who are suffering so much in the cycle of birth and death. Sankarshan Das Adhikari Become an Acharya Sunday Feast Lecture Honolulu, Hawaii--10 July 2011 http://www.backtohome.com/images/2011-Spring/Honolulu_Lecture.JPG Answers by Citing the Vedic Version: Request: Bless Me with Missionary Spirit I am very inspired by your mails every day, which I have been following for the last six months. I see that you have so much vigor and missionary spirit for spreading Krishna consciousness. Please bless me that I will also be able to develop that same missionary spirit for preaching the Krishna Consciousness wherever I am, under the guidance of senior devotees. Your servant, Mahesh Answer: We Cannot Tolerate Seeing Them Suffering Srila Prabhupada ordered his disciples to deliver the entire world. Therefore, if we are his actual followers, we will embrace this order as our very life and soul, just as Srila Prabhupada embraced as his very life and soul the order he received from his spiritual master to spread Krishna consciousness to the English speaking world. If we are actually Krishna conscious, we will not be able to tolerate seeing a world that is completely captured by ignorance and misery and we will fully dedicate our lives for saving these poor suffering fellows from their entanglement in karma cakra, the wheel of birth and death. Dandavats.com: Vedic View of Women

By Bhakti Raghava Swami

Women are meant to form the pillars of a stable, happy and healthy society. In the Vedic culture, the concept of womanhood is intimately connected with that of respect, honor, chastity, home and family [the nucleus and foundation for a stable society], a loving and caring husband, planned progeny to create wanted, healthy and happy children

ISKCON Brampton, Canada: RATHA YATRA - FESTIVAL OF INDIA - JULY 16 & 17

Upcoming Event - Festival of India (Ratha Yatra)

The parade down Yonge Street echoes an annual procession that has taken place for centuries in the ancient city of Puri, India. There, three mammoth chariots, known as rathas are taken on a jubilant procession, called a yatra. Hence, the Festival is also known as Ratha-Yatra or "chariot procession". In Puri, this age-old Ratha-Yatra procession continues to attract over a million people every year!

ISKCON Brampton would be serving at the Festival of India on Saturday July 16th and Sunday 17th July 2011. There are various areas where we can serve – prasadam distribution on the island, parade supervisor and attending pre-Ratha Yatra events to promote festival.

Please contact Sayasacin Prabhu on 647-638-8065 or savyasacin.bms@gmail.com for more information.

Let's all wear blue or yellow for Lord Jagannatha!
Have you picked out your outfit for Ratha-Yatra (Festival of India) yet? An encouraging call goes out to all devotees to wear blue or yellow for the festival to show your love for Lord Jagannatha!

This year, under the direction of Bhaktimarga Swami, our annual Ratha-Yatra parade will have an exciting twist! In an attempt to showcase our beautiful parade in a more coordinated manner, we are requesting that all devotees wear either BLUE or YELLOW on the day of the parade. On July 16th, we will become ambassadors of our beautiful Hare Krishna culture. Let’s look organized and unified and show the people of Toronto how beautiful this festival truly is.

Wear your love for Lord Jagannatha -- BLUE or YELLOW! Jaya Jagannatha!

HG Vaisnava Prabhu, HG Janaki Mataji and family are pleased to invite you for the initiation Ceremony of Patsy, Nalini and Sanatana at 10:00am on Sunday 17th July 2011 on Centre Island Toronto.

H.H. Prahladananda Swami: Lecture SB 1.3.3 Happy Death Day, Happy Birth Day 6-18-2011

Lecture on the Srimad Bhagavatam 1.3.3 titled “Happy Death Day, Happy Birth Day”given  on June 18, 2011 in Timisoara, Romania

Srimad Bhagavatam 1.3.3

yasyavayava-samsthanaih

kalpito loka-vistarah

tad vai bhagavato rupam

visuddham sattvam urjitam

TRANSLATION

It is believed that all the universal planetary systems are situated on the extensive body of the purusha, but He has nothing to do with the created material ingredients. His body is eternally in spiritual existence par excellence.

PURPORT

The conception of the virat-rupa or visva-rupa of the Supreme Absolute Truth is especially meant for the neophyte who can hardly think of the transcendental form of the Personality of Godhead. To him a form means something of this material world, and therefore an opposite conception of the Absolute is necessary in the beginning to concentrate the mind on the power extension of the Lord. As stated above, the Lord extends His potency in the form of the mahat-tattva, which includes all material ingredients. The extension of power by the Lord and the Lord Himself personally are one in one sense, but at the same time the mahat-tattva is different from the Lord. Therefore the potency of the Lord and the Lord are simultaneously different and nondifferent. The conception of the virat-rupa, especially for the impersonalist, is thus nondifferent from the eternal form of the Lord. This eternal form of the Lord exists prior to the creation of the mahat-tattva, and it is stressed here that the eternal form of the Lord is par excellence spiritual or transcendental to the modes of material nature. The very same transcendental form of the Lord is manifested by His internal potency, and the formation of His multifarious manifestations of incarnations is always of the same transcendental quality, without any touch of the mahat-tattva.

Australian News: A Work of Art @ Hare Krishna Valley

This week at Hare Krishna Valley, we hosted several devotees from Melbourne who came down to put the final touches on the artistic painting they have been doing in our Temple room. The final product looks very effective, and creates an exotic Indian Temple ambiance.

farm_11_007

We also went to Munish and Monica’s new house in Geelong on Thursday night for a Krishna conscious house warming. Their house is particularly spacious, and will be most suitable for hosting the monthly gatherings that we have with our congregation in Geelong.

We look forward to speaking to you again next week.
Until then, I remain yours in the service of Srila Prabhupada.

Keshava Dasa.

New Vrndavan, USA: Service in the Holy Dham

“Srila Prabhupada said that devotional service rendered in a Holy Dham like New Vrindaban is 1,000 times more potent than devotional service rendered anywhere else,” said Shanka dasa, New Vrindaban’s Kitchen Manager and Head Cook since 2001.  “So I try to engage as many guests as possible in the kitchen chopping vegetables, making bread, and other services.”

Shanka received initiation from Srila Prabhupada in 1973 and later served Srila Prabhupada personally in Mumbai.  “Every day, I used to make a flower garland and give it to him for Guru Puja,” remembers Shanka.  One day, after being chastised by his spiritual master for a mistake, Shanka felt so disheartened that he did not give Srila Prabhupada a flower garland that day.  Instead, he asked another devotee to give the garland to Srila Prabhupada.  Noticing Shanka’s absence, Srila Prabhupada immediately asked, “Where’s my flower boy?”  The next day, Shanka happily resumed his service.

Thirty years later, even though his service has changed, Shanka is still happy to be serving Srila Prabhupada.  “I get pleasure from seeing that all the guests get Krishna prasad,” he explained.  “Some of the guests tell me that they come back every year because the prasad is so good.”

Shanka invites everyone to render service in the Holy Dham.   During your next visit to New Vrindaban, please take advantage of the opportunity to spend a few minutes or a few hours in the kitchen with Shanka.

Bharatavarsa.net: Bhakti Vikasa Swami: Pure devotees

... engage themselves fully in the transcendental loving service of the Lord. Their minds cannot be diverted from the lotus feet of Krsna. Their talks are solely on the transcendental subjects. ... Devotees of the Supreme Lord are twenty-four hours daily engaged in glorifying the qualities and pastimes of the Supreme Lord. Their hearts and souls are constantly submerged in Krsna, and they take pleasure in discussing Him with other devotees.

Bhakti Lata, Alachua, USA: Stumbling Upon the Sun

"If you think that this Krishna name is not very suitable, you can accept any name. That doesn't matter. Our proposition is you chant God's name. That is our proposal. Therefore it is universal. If you like, you can chant Jehovah or you can chant Allah, but we request you that you chant God's name." - Srila Prabhupada, 1968

***

Last week, my friend Shalagram and I decided to explore and admire the campus of the University of Florida under the stars in the lamplight. Then Shalagram pointed to the magnificent building that I pass every day.

"Have you ever been inside?" she asked.

"Actually, I have not," I said, taken aback. "That's the music building."

"You want to explore?"

"Why not?" I said.

So we crossed the street and entered through tall glass doors. Other people were also coming in, walking upstairs with a purpose. I felt a little intimidated. "What if someone demands to know why we're in here?" I muttered to my friend. "We're total sneaks!"

"Just act like we own the place," Shalagram replied. We grinned to each other and straightened our backs. We followed the stream of people up the stairs. We could hear the tuning of a guitar and the rustle of a huge crowd.

Timidly, Shalagram and I walked up to the door that had to lead to an auditorium. A young man walked past us on his way in and I flagged him down. "Excuse me, um, what's going on here?"

"Oh, one of our bands is playing tonight," he replied.

"Our bands?"

"Yeah, one of our bands here at UF... this is Crusade for Christ,"

"Aha, I see... so this is a... Christian thing?"

"Yes," he smiled and went on inside.

Shalagram and I looked to each other. I knew it flashed across both of our minds at the same time: destiny must have brought us here. "Let's do it!" we agreed, and we plunged into the dark auditorium. Everyone was standing up in the pews to face a band on stage. We walked up as far as we could and slipped in near the stage.

Wide-eyed, Shalagram and I looked around at the vaulted ceilings, the majestic architecture, and the hundreds of college students standing in the pews and in the balconies. Most had their arms raised, their eyes closed, and were singing along with the band.

We joined in on the tumultuous song, for the words were projected on a screen near the stage. Looking around, I was astounded to see such enraptured faces. Those were the same faces that I see in a heart-touching kirtan.

Then the song ended, and everyone took their seat. "Should we stay?" I whispered to my friend.

"Why not?" she whispered back. So we sat.

A young man got up on stage to give a sermon. And what an eloquent, incredible sermon it was. He was practical yet poetic - he wove in the scriptural analogy of running a race to our lives as dedicated disciples in the race to the Lord. I kept glancing over at Shalagram and we kept nodding to each other; nearly every point that he touched upon there was an equivalent in Vaishnava philosophy. Through his words, I felt inspired in a way that I have never felt before to chant intense and dedicated japa the very next morning.

The young man drew his sermon to a close, and then the band sang a closing song. Everyone rose to their feet and raised their arms. I raised my arms, too. And when everyone sang out "Whoah oh oh oh...." I murmured softly to myself, "Hare Krishna..."

My spiritual master often says that the sun goes by many names in all the different languages of the world, but it is still the same sun.

It's the same way with God - He goes by many names, but He is still God. And in that dark auditorium last week, I felt that I had stumbled upon the sun.

Bhakti Lata, Alachua, USA: My Body is a Temple

Ever met a Hare Krishna and wondered what in the world was on his or her forehead?? And why

Tilak is a marking that Vaishnavas apply to the forehead with sacred clay. As a kid I wore tilak but rebelled against it as a teenager. I didn't want to be labelled as "one of those Hare Krishnas." Besides, I didn't really know how to put it on and I always ended up with mud all over my face.

Then a couple years ago I had a very odd inspiration. The tradition for the holy month of Kartik (October-November) is to make a special vow, or vrata, and surrender that effort to the Lord. So I decided to do the unthinkable:

Wear tilak every single day.

To school, to gatherings, and even - who woulda thunk? - to the temple. I figured that a) I would get over my tilak phobia, and b) I would become a killer tilak artist by the end of the month.

So for the first day of Kartik, yes, my tilak was all over my hair and forehead in messy streaks, even after spending ten minutes trying to perfect it. When I went to school, I thought I would get weird looks. But I didn't. What I got were questions. And the question always came: "Why?"

As the month progressed, I began to enjoy answering these questions because they would always stir up a conversation about God. And when the last day of Kartik rolled around, sure enough, my tilak phobia had vanished.

And, if I say so myself, I was a killer tilak artist.

Over the years as I've traveled around the world with tilak upon my forehead, I've been asked that question countless times: "Why?"

Inspired, today I wrote this concrete poem as one of my answers.

Bharatavarsa.net: Book distribution seminar: an inquiry about book distribution

I recently received this letter from a Welsh book distributor named Gaura Dasa that I think is relevant to all book distributors. My answer to him follows below:

* * *

Sometimes when doing book distribution I perform it on a mechanical level, and I think to myself, "Maybe if I could have spent more time with that person he would appreciate the book he's just received." Should I spend more time with people?

Another question: How do I develop and maintain a fresh and healthy mood for preaching and maintain the understanding that sankirtan is a spiritual activity, an expression of love for the Lord?

* * *

Nice to hear from you, Gaura. I hope your book distribution in Wales is going nicely.

It's understandable that in our neophyte condition we often distribute books mechanically, and because we're often distributing the same books, that makes it even more likely for the mechanical mode to be there. Another thing is, it's Kali-yuga, so not many people are interested. When they do take the book, many times it's because you were nice or maybe there was a little interest.

However, what I've found is that the more attentive I am in chanting my rounds and reading Prabhupada's books, the more my book distribution is fresh and enlivening, a spiritual activity. This is the key to success in book distribution and any activity of devotional service.

When you do meet people who are really interested, spend some time with them. Answer any questions they may have. The personal touch is always touching and can be the thing that brings someone closer to the shelter of Krsna and His devotees. This will also help you come out of the mechanical mode. When you do meet those really interested people (they are out there), get their e-mail and phone number and keep in touch with them. They can become devotees.

Another thing is, it's not so bad if you are sometimes in the mechanical mode, as long as your consciousness is to give the people books for their spiritual advancement. For instance, a pujari in the temple is offering the same articles to the Deity at every aroti. That can become very mechanical if the proper consciousness is not there. When you are distributing books, have the consciousness of helping the conditioned souls by giving them information about Krsna. Think that by distributing books you are making an offering to Krsna by giving the conditioned souls an opportunity to once again hear about Him.

* * *

I've just returned from my world tour, and I must say that in many parts of the world book distribution is going nicely. What I've found in most cases is that where book distribution is healthy it's because the leaders are emphasizing the activity. As Vaisesika Prabhu says, "Energy flows where attention goes." But there are other places that are struggling for various reasons, mainly because it's the Age of Kali, in which people have very little interest in God.

I have good news on the sankirtan van for Nairobi. Upon returning to the US I found eight checks for the cause, equaling $1,004. These donations were given by:

Kamalini dd - $500 Banka Bihari dd - $108 Denver Temple - $108 Jaya Gauranga d and Tulasi dd $108 Berkeley Temple - $108 Mahatama dd - $24 Caitanya Mangala dd - $24 Vraja Kumara d - $24

This means we now have a total of $3,600. Only $16,400 to go to reach the goal of $20,000, which will get a good used van.

Book Distribution News: an inquiry about book distribution

I recently received this letter from a Welsh book distributor named Gaura Dasa that I think is relevant to all book distributors. My answer to him follows below:

* * *

* * *

* * *

Akrura das, Gita Coaching: IF YOU JUST COULD

If You Just Could Live the Second Half of Your Life Differently From The First, What Would You Do With It?

Take Up the Process of Gita Coaching to Create the Meaningful, Fulfilling and Exciting Life You Deserve.

Dear Prospective Devotee Client,

If you’ve been wondering what should you to to be more happy and more productive in Krsna consciousness ... if you've been downsized from a corporate job where you’ve spent the last 20 years of your life … if you’ve recently taken early retirement to pursue your dream lifestyle… if you’ve been thinking of making a drastic career change because it just doesn’t deliver the passion and satisfaction it used to … or if you’re just not satisfied with your life at the moment — I have an invitation that could help you create a completely different life for yourself … the life you’ve been secretly dreaming about.

It’s no surprise that, late in life, most people’s greatest lament is that they failed to live a life with meaning. They didn’t take that “Chance”, they didn’t make a contribution, leave a legacy, do anything important, or even pursue the one thing that was truly significant to them.

They worry that they’ll leave this Earth without having seen very much of it — because they were too busy getting ahead, being cautious, and planning for the future. I have seen this regret time and time again in the faces of my students. When they first arrive at their seminars, they’re timid, cautious — perhaps not believing they can create the rich and rewarding lifestyle or passionate pursuits they’ve been thinking about for years.

Yet over just a few hours of a Gita Coaching Course, their faces begin to brighten as they discover they can begin creating the life they want — regardless of the confines they find themselves in and despite the setbacks they’ve encountered before.

But aside from the courses in 20 countries, for more than 20 years I have also worked privately with devotees to take them from where they are now to where they want to be. In fact, my greatest enjoyment comes from working directly with people who truly want to make the internal changes and life-changing decisions that will allow them to achieve the goals they want to reach!

The goal of Gita Coaching courses and personal coaching is to feed your mind, body, heart and soul.

Subhavilasa das ACBSP, Toronto, CA: Glories of Sayana Ekadasi which is today...

Picture

Wow, we ourselves almost forgot it was Ekadasi today. For some reason I was thinking it was later this week so thanks to a friendly reminder from another devotee

So here are the glories of Sayana Ekadasi which should have been posted yesterday...the day before Ekadasi....but rather we can enjoy the story on Ekadasi day itself.

The saintly king Yudhishthira Maharaj said, "Oh Keshava, what is the name of that Ekadasi that occurs during the light fortnight of the month of Ashadha?
Who is the worshipable Deity for the auspicious day, and what is the process for observing this event?
Lord Sri Krishna replied, "Oh caretaker of this Earthly planet, I shall gladly tell you a wonderful historical event that the deva lord Brahma once narrated to his son Narad Muni.
"One day Narad Muni asked his father, 'What is the name of the Ekadasi that comes during the light part of the month of Ashadha', much as you did?
Kindly tell me how I should observe this Ekadasi and thus please the Supreme Lord, Sri Vishnu.'
"Lord Brahma replied, 'Oh great saintly orator, O best of all sages, Oh purest devotee of Lord Vishnu, your question is as usual excellent for all mankind.
There is nothing better than Ekadasi, the day of Lord Sri Hari, in this or any other world.
It nullifies even the worst sins if observed properly.
For this reason I shall tell you about this Ashadha-shukla Ekadasi.

'Fasting on this Ekadasi purifies one of all sins and fulfills all ones desires.
Therefore, whoever neglects to observe this sacred fast day is a good candidate for entering into hell. Ashadha-shukla Ekadasi is also famous as Padma Ekadasi.
Just to please the Supreme Lord Hrishikesha, the master of the senses, one should fast on this day.
Listen carefully, Oh Narad, as I relate to you a wonderful historical event that was recorded in the scriptures regarding this Ekadasi.
Just hearing this account destroys all kinds of sins, along with all obstacles on the path to spiritual perfection.

'Oh son, there was once a saintly king in the Surya Vamsha whose name was Mandhata.
Because he always stood up for the truth, he was appointed emperor.
He took care of his subjects as though they were his very own family members and children.
On account of his piety and great religiosity, there was no pestilence, drought, or disease of any kind in his entire kingdom.
All his subjects were not only free of all kinds of disturbances but also were very wealthy.
The king's own treasury was free of any ill-gotten moneys, and thus he ruled happily for many years.

'Once, however, because of some sin in his kingdom, there was a drought for three years.
The subjects found themselves beset by famine also.
The lack of food grains made it impossible for them to perform the prescribed Vedic sacrifices, offer oblations of ghee to their forefathers and to the devas, engage in any ritualistic worship, or even study the Vedic literatures.
Finally, they all came before their beloved king in a great assembly and addressed him thus, 'Oh king, you always see to our welfare, so we humbly beg your assistance now.
Everyone and everything in this world needs water.
Without water, almost everything is rendered useless or dead.
The Vedas call water nara, and because the Supreme Personality of Godhead sleeps upon water, His another name is Narayana.
God makes His own abode on water and takes His rest there.

It is said that three things cannot exist without water; pearls, human beings, and flour.
The essential quality of a pearl is its luster, and that is due to water.
The essence of a man is his semen, whose main constituent is water.
And without water, flour cannot be made into dough and then be cooked into various forms of bread, offered and eaten.
Sometimes water is called jala-narayaaa, the Supreme Lord in the form of this life sustaining substance - water.

In His form as the clouds, the Supreme Lord is present throughout the sky and pours forth rains, from which grow the grains that maintain every living entity.
' "Oh king, the severe drought has caused a great lack of valuable grains; thus we are all miserable, and the population is decreasing as people die off or leave your kingdom.
Oh best ruler on Earth, please find some solutions to this problem and bring us to peace and prosperity once again.

'The king replied, "You speak the truth, for grains are like Brahman, the Absolute Truth, who lives within grains and thereby sustains all beings.
Indeed, it is because of grains that the entire world lives.
Now, why is there a terrible drought in our kingdom?
The Holy Scriptures discuss this subject very thoroughly.
If a king is irreligious, both he and his subjects suffer.
I have meditated upon the cause of our problem for a long time, but after searching my past and present character I can honestly say that I find no sin.
Still, for the good of all you subjects, I shall try to remedy the situation.
Thinking in this way, King Mandhata assembled his army and entourage.
Paid his obeisances to me, and then entered the forest.
He wandered here and there, seeking great sages in their Ashrams and inquiring about how to resolve the crisis in his kingdom.
At last he came upon the ashram of one of my other sons, Angira Muni, whose effulgence lit up all directions.
Seated in his hermitage, Angira looked like a second Brahma.
King Mandhata was very pleased to see that exalted sages, whose senses were completely under control. The king immediately dismounted his horse and offered his respectful obeisances at the lotus feet of Angira Muni.
Then the king joined his palms and prayed for the Muni's blessings.
That saintly person reciprocated by blessing the king with sacred mantras; then he asked him about the welfare of the seven limbs of his kingdom.
The seven limbs of a king's domain are
1. the king himself;
2. the ministers;
3. his treasury;
4. his military forces;
5. his allies;
6. the brahmins;
7. the sacrificial performances performed in the kingdom and the needs of the subjects under his care.

'After telling the sage how the seven limbs of his kingdom were situated, King Mandhata asked the sage about his own situation, and if he was happy.
Then Angira Muni asked the king why he had undertaken such a difficult journey into the forest, and the king told him of the affliction his kingdom was suffering.
The king said, "Oh great sage, I am ruling and maintaining my kingdom while following the Vedic injunctions, and thus I do not know the reason for the drought.
To solve this mystery, I have approached you for help.
Please help me relieve the suffering of my subjects.

'Angira Rishi said to the king, 'The present age, Satya yuga, is the best of all ages, for in this age Dharma stands on all four legs (Truthfulness, Austerity, Mercy, and Cleanliness).
In this age everyone respects Brahmins as the topmost members of society.
Also, everyone fulfills his occupational duties, and only twice-born Brahmins are allowed to perform Vedic austerities and penances.
Although this is a standard, Oh lion among kings, there is one shudra who is unlawfully performing the rites of austerity and penance in your kingdom.
This is why there is no rain in your land.
You should therefore punish this laborer with death, for by so doing you will remove the contamination inflicted by his actions and restore peace to your subjects.

'The king then replied, "How can I kill an offense-less performer of austerity and sacrifice?
Please give me some spiritual solution.
'The great sage Angira Muni then said, "Oh king, you should observe a fast on the Ekadasi that occurs during the light fortnight of the month of Ashadha.
This auspicious day is named Padma Ekadasi, and by its influence plentiful rains and thus grains and other foodstuffs will surely return to your kingdom.
This Ekadasi bestows perfection upon its faithful observers, removes all kinds of bad elements, and destroys all obstacles on the path to perfection.
Oh king, you, your relatives, and your subjects should all observe this sacred Ekadasi fast.
Then everything in your kingdom will undoubtedly return to normal.
Upon hearing these words, the king offered his obeisances and then returned to his palace.
When the Padma Ekadasi arrived, King Mandhata assembled all the Brahmins, Kshatriyas, Vaishyas and shudras in his kingdom and instructed them to strictly observe this important fast day.
After they had observed it, the rains fell, just as the sage had predicted, and in due course of time there were abundant crops and a rich harvest of grain.
By the mercy of the Supreme Lord Hrishikesha, the master of the senses, all the subjects of King Mandhata became extremely happy and prosperous.

Therefore, Oh Narada, everyone should observe this Ekadasi fast very strictly, for it bestows all kinds of happiness, as well as ultimate liberation, upon the faithful devotee.'
Lord Sri Krishna concluded, "My dear Yudhishthira, Padma Ekadasi is so powerful that one who simply reads or hears its glories becomes completely sinless.
Oh Pandava, one who wishes to please Me should strictly observe this Ekadasi, which is also known as Deva-sayani Ekadasi.
Deva-sayani, or Vishnu-sayani, indicates the day when Lord Vishnu goes to sleep with all the devas.
It is said that after this day one should not perform any new auspicious ceremonies until Devotthani Ekadasi, which occurs during the month of Kartika, because the devas, being asleep, cannot be invited to the sacrificial arena and because the Sun is traveling along its Southern course (Dakshinayanam).
"Lord Sri Krishna continued, "Oh lion among kings, Yudhishthira Maharaj, whoever wants liberation should regularly observe a fast on this Ekadasi which is also the day when the Chaturmasya fast begins.

Thus ends the narration of the glories of the Ashadha-shukla Ekadasi - also known as Padma Ekadasi or Deva-sayani Ekadasi - from the Bhavishya-uttara Purana.

Beauty in the City Beast

Montreal, Quebec

"Tears came forcefully from the eyes of the Lord, as if from a syringe, and all the people surrounding Him became wet."
-From the text Chaitanya Caritamrta Madhya-Lila 13.105

The Lord being referred to in this quote is Chaitanya who cried out of emotion for Jagannath (Krishna) during the Ratha Yatra (Festival of Chariots). He had been dancing and chanting before the chariot of Jagannath in the midst of everyone devotional.

A re-enactment of dancing and singing to the beat of drums, kettle drums, and symbols happened today on St. Laurent in Montreal on a perfect weather day. Tears were held back perhaps for many of us novices in spiritual life; they may have been even contained, not invoked for reasons that we are not sensitized to the state experienced by Chaitanya.

Joy was felt though. I witnessed happy participants, myself being one of them. A good strong chanting persisted under a baking sun as the chariot (resembling a temple) rolled down the street. The stage events at Jean-Mance park were entertaining. Acts moved on and off with a smooth professional roll like the easy turning wheels of the chariot.

Delicious prasadam was served (Indian food without chillies, a rarity). And there were tons of happy faces reflecting Jagannath's own facial demeanour.

As usual after hours of mingling (and entertaining) I stubbornly avoided ride offers back to the ashram for rest. A new exploration route for me was Rachelle St. People are going back to biking in defiance of expensive auto arrangements. Good for them.

Even Jagannath's chariot, come to think of it, is a non-engine-operated conveyance. It is pulled by love when devotees grip the two taut ropes that move the chariot forward.

If we keep up the smooth handling of the festival for Him, Jagannath, the Lord of the Universe, then with such a level of perfectional devotion, tears may eventually flow, like a waterfall, or syringe (as mentioned). It only requires a building of the intensity.

Acceptance!

Terra Cotta, Ontario

I spent a glorious few hours with Bob, Judy, their daughters, Raj and Surabhi in the village of Terra Cotta. Red clay is prevalent in this nestled away sweet place with the Credit River running through it; the rusty earth tone explains the name of the hamlet.

Bob and Judy are school teachers and I put them in the category of Brahmin friends. Their approach to spirituality, Christianity, may be a slightly different approach than their guests, yet I hold it in high admiration that they are as accepting of us as they are of their own fellow worshippers. In fact over a scrumptious lunch and the trek on Bruce Trail they kept encouraging us to seriously consider purchasing the property next to their lovely home so that they could have mutual-thinking neighbours by their side.

What a fantastic couple and family!

I had a continual progressive day from the stand point of acceptance and harmonization. From Terra Cotta I visited three more households in the area, of people of our community. These were people who took time for bonding and gaining an increased understanding though simple dialogue. The end result in each case was, “Hey we are all family!”

As I wound up the day with final contemplations of the day’s stock I was humoured by my first contacts of early morning, a group of young men who identified themselves from the Sikh and Muslim tradition. They were very amiable with me as I walked Yorkville Ave in Toronto. They did smoke. They did probe.

“Are you Buddhist?”

“No!… Hare Krishna!”

“Oh yeah! How did you get into this?… And what is the co-relation between ganja and the Ganges?”

At this question I had to laugh knowing what was important to them. At least I was not dismissed by the group. When you consider that both the Ganges and ganja were dear to many of us who became monks in due course of time someone has to befriend such fellows and give them hope that there are such things more precious than smoking your life away in dreams.

Australian News: Swami Satyananda On Kirtan

A friend recently sent me this quote from Swami Satyananda – perhaps best known for writing one of the world’s most popular manuals on yoga – Asana Pranayama Mudra Bandha. He was a disciple of Swami Sivananda, and his lineage emphasises integrating different aspects of yoga, like Kundalini, and Kriya yogas. Before he passed away in India in 2009, he spoke about his vision for the future. It’s a startling and beautiful picture, that many of us are seeing manifest.

“It will be full of sankirtan. The sound of sankirtan soirees will ring in the atmosphere. Renowned singers and musicians will step into kirtan singing, because the joy and ecstasy derived from devotional music cannot be found elsewhere. Two objectives will automatically be served in this way. First, the standard of music will improve. Second, those who find the spiritual path very difficult will find it easy through bhakti. Therefore, those of you who can sing and who have a family must sing kirtan. Dance, music and sankirtan will dominate this century. There will be metropolitan sankirtan, cruise sankirtan, forest sankirtan, mountain sankirtan and, of course, temple sankirtan…..”

Click here to check out the Mantrology web site and see the rest of the quote.

By Kesava Krsna Dasa

Let us suppose that a refined and cultured person wants to join us fulltime, and we encourage that, but a niggling doubt arises within us, because we wonder if this person will be looked after, according to the high expectations learned from Srila Prabhupada’s books? Should our temples and ashramas present a cultural shock, or a friendly homecoming?
