H.G. Sankarshan das Adhikari, USA: Monday 9 May 2011--Krishna Consciousness in All Situations--and--Brahman, Paramatma, and Bhagavan

A daily broadcast of the Ultimate Self Realization Course(tm) Monday 9 May 2011 The Supreme Personality of Godhead, Lord Sri Krishna, and His eternal consort, Srimati Radharani are enjoying transcendental pastimes in the topmost planet of the spiritual world, Sri Goloka Vrindavan. They are beckoning us to rejoin them. (Click on photo to see a larger image.) Our Mission: To help everyone awaken their original Krishna consciousness, which is eternal, full of knowledge and full of bliss. Such a global awakening will, in one stroke, solve all the problems of the world society bringing in a new era of unprecedented peace and prosperity for all. May that day, which the world so desperately needs, come very soon. We request you to participate in this mission by reviving your dormant Krishna consciousness and assisting us in spreading this science all over the world. Dedicated with love to ISKCON Founder-Acharya: His Divine Grace A.C. Bhaktivedanta Swami Prabhupada, our beloved spiritual master, and to you, our dear readers. Today's Thought: Krishna Consciousness in All Situations Uploaded from Bhaktivedanta Ashram--Austin, Texas USA One test of how well situated you are in in Krishna consciousness is how well you can maintain your Krishna consciousness in any and all situations. The key for doing this successfully is to carefully and faithfully follow these guidelines: 1. Regularly chant your prescribed number of rounds of the Hare Krishna mahamantra every day on your japa mala beads as early as possible in the day, ideally before sunrise. For initiates this is at least 16 rounds daily. For others, it is according to their vows. 2. Strictly avoid illicit sex, meat eating, intoxication, and gambling because these pollute the consciousness making it difficult, if not impossible, to remember Krishna. 3. Spend as much time as possible every day reading and hearing the transcendental glories of Lord Sri Krishna (Krishna katha). 3. Render as much service as possible to the Krishna consciousness movement regularly contributing to it as much as possible in as many ways as possible. 4. Always pray to guru and Krishna that you can be saved from the grip of maya or illusion. If you will stick to the above principles, you will always be happy in ever-increasing Krishna consciousness in all situations. Sankarshan Das Adhikari ` Question: Brahman, Paramatma, and Bhagavan What is the difference between Brahman, Paramatma, and Bhagavan? V.G. Answer: Perfect, More Perfect, and Most Perfect Brahman is the impersonal aspect of the Supreme, the undifferentiated oneness. Paramatma is the four-handed form of the Supreme Lord situated in the heart of all living beings. And Bhagavan is the Supreme Personality of Godhead, the source of all existence. One who realizes Brahman has a perfect realization of the sat or eternity aspect of the Supreme. One realizes the Paramatma has a more perfect realization of the sat and cit (knowledge) features of the Supreme. And one who realizes Bhagavan has the most perfect realization of the sat, cit, and ananda (bliss) features of the Supreme. Devadeva Mirel, Alachua, USA: Craft Collective : Canning Relish

Sweet relish.

Lots of chopping. Lots of sugar. A little of this. A little of that.

This and that. Seriously. That’s all I know.

Last week me and the girls got together for some relish making. And canning.

Between the three of us, should have been a cinch. Right?

Did I mention we had 10 arms between the 3 of us? My babycakes and Padi’s toddlercakes. Which might explain for the turtlecakes pace. It took us all day and into the evening to put up 17 half pints of relish for canning.

I don’t even know what recipe we used. I do recall a Fanny Farmer cookbook dogeared on the table.

If it weren’t for these pictures, it would all be a blur.

Mohini & Padi did all the purchasing. Mohini was the planner and brought the recipe. I think she was also the one who did most of the work.

Padi & Shyami. Shyam is helping reduce the amount of cukes we need to dice.

Padi measuring out the cut up kirby cukes. I did do a wee bit of dicing. But mostly I was breast feeding and snapping pics.

I'm not much one for hot dogs, but I am looking forward to lazy summer days eating leftover brown rice with mixed-in relish.

We used two water bath canners to get it all done by supper time. Love my huge stoveness!

Lots of sugar went into this relish. It reminds me of the cucumber salad we order at my favorite restaurant, Yuan Fu in Rockville. I want to make more soon but this time add slivered strips of fresh ginger.

Freak much? I decorate my shelves with my canned goods like some first place trophy in the sport of hoarding. And so it is.

Hari Sauri das, Mayapura, IN: 2011 Malaysia tour – Penang Island

On May day, we flew from Johor in the south to Penang Island in the north. The name “Penang” comes from the modern Malay name Pulau Pinang, which means island of the areca nut palm.

The island was a strategic location for trading and a regular port of call for Chinese and Portuguese traders in the 15th century. In 1786 the British adventurer, Captain Francis Light, landed and on behalf of the Madras-based firm, Jourdain Sullivan and de Souza, leased the island from the local Sultan in exchange for military protection from Burmese and Siamese armies.

In an all-too-familiar colonial scenario, Light failed to provide the protection because he had acted without company consent. Consequently the Sultan tried to take back the island by force in 1790, lost, and was forced to cede it to British control. Thus a hundred + years of British presence in Malaysia began. At least one welcome legacy the Brits left behind was their language. Practically everyone in the country speaks English. As for Light, he got his karma and died from malaria shortly after, along with quite a few others, and the island earned the epithet “the white man’s grave.”

Enough history. Devotees rent a house on the main island with  a bright airy exterior for open air programs

and inside they have installed beautiful Deities of Sri Sri Panca-tattva

We wasted no time and went straight into the morning class, a continuation of my Chanting seminar. Devotees were keen to hear and the brief visit was a great pleasure

I noted that someone had left two 10 kgs. bags of rice as an offering before Srila Prabhupada’s Vyasasana

no doubt as a contribution to their massive food distribution program

After breakfast we took a drive over to the mainland passing on the way the main mosque.

Malaysians seem to live quite harmoniously with all the main religions  well represented and supported by government. Preaching can go on but only amongst each religion’s respective community. Conversions from one to another is not allowed. Although seemingly restrictive, it does have advantages in keeping peaceful inter-relationships.

On our way to our Bhaktivedanta Cultural Center in Seberang Jaya near Butterworth, we passed by a huge land reclamation area before crossing over the third longest causeway in Asia

One curious sign I noted on many of the highways was this– a symbol of an open umbrella with rain falling, accompanied by an outline of a motorcycle, with an arrow pointing to the left and a distance given in meters. These signs are always placed the equivalent distance before an upcoming road overpass.

It seems it rains so often and so heavily in tropical Malayasia that motorcyclists are often forced to stop and wait at the side of the road until the rain eases. This causes a traffic hazard so the government directs them to stop under the overpass where they can shelter and be seen by other traffic.

Good Day Learning

Moundsville, West Virginia

What did I learn at a conference here? My notes reveal some stats including remarks -
everything from pro-vegetarian data to quotes from the guru. Here are just a few:

Alcohol kills more than AIDS, TB and violence.

The unexamined life is not worth living. Aristotle

Preach always, if necessary use words. Francis of Assisi

Smile is the universal form of communications

Service is not viewed as a frill.

Sucess is the by-product of preparation.

Life is a series of first impressions.

In the U.S 1,000 teenagers attempt suicide everyday

2.2 million people are in prison at any given time. (U.S)

The only thing you are really in control of is your attitude.

Do not be upset with the instrument of your karma
SRILA PRABHUPADA

Additional Message:

A minor insert to do with walking: I circled around the lodge and temple buildings and came upon the dumpster at the temple's north end. While passing by that dumpster I surprised a deer who dashed off into the bush. I thought I might find a racoon there on my next revolution. Sure enough the next time around I found a raccoon scurrying about on top of the dumpster unit. My next thought was "mayb I'll see a possum next." Sure enough at the base of the unit there was a possum.

Now that was a mystical experience if ever there was one

"Im Here"

Moundsville, West Virginia

Im here to attend the Festival of Inspiration. My contribution is filled at the top of the attraction DRAMA. And so after a long over night drive into the U.S. and a brief rest our actor cast of 11 took seriously to a practice of this year's on-the-road theatrical presentation, "The Three Lives of Bharata."

Oh I felt guilt about the direction I gave in the practice. I expressed this guilt to a good friend here at New Vrndavan retreat centre which is set in the beautiful hills of West Virginia.

"No," he said reassuringly, "its necessary to be assertive at times."

"I believe I cracked the whip, so to speak, too hard at some of the crew," I confessed.

"As long as love is given in th same dose," he remarked

My inner-thought was "I hope I'm able to accomplish this so-so, half and half policy. Better figures would be 10-90.

I felt guilty about one more item - the lack of walking. What's to be done? It is very austere reframing this routine due to time taken in by car, air, train, or sailing. That type of travel can surely de-regulate the walking effort. It can also be a little selfish just taking yourself into consideration when visiting pilgrims want some attention. There might be five hundred of them this weekend and there are five swamis to be divided amongst them.

This is the life of sacrifice so when you want your serenity much of this serene mess msut be re-defined to include interaction with pilgrims.

Japa Group: Japa Chair

As I sat in my Japa chair today....the morning sun streaming through the window onto my chest - much needed heat and energy to help with the recovery of a 5 day influenza virus.

A thought came to mind.....just as the sun is giving relief and healing to my body - similarly the rays of the Holy names are giving me relief from material suffering and anxiety - it is healing and purifying our soul.

Krsna's association is incredibly powerful....He mercifully appears as the sound of the Hare Krsna mantra and purifies our mind and body and allows us to develop our pure love for the Lord.

David Haslam, UK: Krishna Consciousness and Community Cohesion

Over the past few years I’ve been presenting to selected groups how Krishna Consciousness can help towards community cohesion, it’s always been warmly received but I remain uncertain as to it’s effectiveness and as there is no temple/centre direction my mind was looking at stopping. I have been approached to help set up and be [...]

Bhakta Chris, New York, USA: The Humble Musings Of The Manhattan Monk 5/8/11

Such is the gravitational pull towards being the center of attention. My false ego demands I wear a whole series of dynamic masks to gain the attention and affection of others, yet each of these masks, as I gaze at them in the reflection of my heart, only throw back a wicked gaze.

When can I accept that "I am that I am"? How will I learn to love myself deeply and actually, so that I am not crying out loud that I am not a poet on the winds of William Blake, that I'm not and probably never will be in the Ivy League, that I'm not a calloused and wise man of the streets but middle-class and white-bread through and through.

I'm not tall, charming, beautiful, and verbose like everyone in Manhattan, charismatic to a fault. I'm certainly not in touch with the loving core of my being, spontaneous, caring, and soft.

I kick and scream at being left out of the attention and affection circles of the association around me, completely ignoring my own duplicity, my own envy, and the fact that I've done very little to make myself of interest to those who may like a little meaning and heart before they may naturally share their own.

***
What we seek and need the most we are most unwilling to give. The secret is clear. To get the affection I need, in the most natural and ungreedy of ways, I have to pry open my beating heart and become free and true and willing to expose that which I am not, and that which I am. That which I am is very beautiful and very interesting when its willing to be shared.

So what good is my envy of those within these circles of affection and attention? The only good is that this rotten envy is completely exposed, and when the pain of this exposure compels me to become genuine like these brothers of mine, to live like them, to live in such a way where the natural affection I need flows to me like I am magnetized.

***
This life brings with it the demand that my previous course of action, to turn away and escape inward, into the fantasies of these masks, is no longer a viable or even sane option. To take this options means a pain that slowly rots me from within, rather than that healthy and searing pain which compels me to push outwards, to engage, to act, to love in gesture and in words and in affection given freely.

The paradox is that to get my heart's desire, the steady and warm love of these devotees, I have to give up my artificial demand for their love and surrender to the process of honestly earning it, by giving up my envy and illusions with gradual and firm determination.

I must find my simple heart in service to win their hearts, not with an expectation of selfish return, but with the goal of drawing out their eternal happiness. This breeds the affection of pure devotion, in which no one feels left out. There is no false anxiety over importance and position because these considerations are now left behind in the light of the deepest, most humble, and most natural equality.

H.H. Satsvarupa das Goswami (Ret.): 304—Poem for May 8

www.sdgonline.org. SDGonline Daily updates

4:48 A.M.

A Writer of Pieces

New format—I will begin with a poem written on the day of its printing. Then I will print random excerpts of books I have printed over the last 35 years. I hope this variety will be pleasing.

Poem for May 8

For the third day in a row
I entered the realm beyond the
syllables, the hladini-sakti,
the tender female counterpart of
Krishna, the reservoir
of love of Krishna and
Sri Krishna Himself,
the Player of the flute
seen as Radha-Govinda
freshly polished in golden hue
and dressed in yellow outfits
like the spring flowers,
daffodils, dandelions and yellow
tulips. They are easy and accessible
to behold in Their forms.

Sanatana asked, “Who am I?”
and the Lord replied, “You are
a pure spirit soul, an eternal
servant, but you are marginal
and sometimes get covered by
the illusory energy and suffer
the threefold miseries.” He is
teaching him gradually through
a full course of learning.

Yesterday we went to the baseball
game and watched Laksman
strike out two batters.
“He throws hard,”
says his dad-coach. But then lightning
and thunder came and they called
all the boys off the field.
And I wound up with a
headache.

Krishna guides me
in all I do as the
Supersoul in my heart.
Baladeva thanked me for
conducting a festival of inspiration
even without going to New
Vrndavana. Today I will
eat light because I am
overweight. It’s Mother’s Day, and
our only worshipable mata
is Mother Veda, the scriptures
that get read to me throughout
the day. I will offer
my own writing as a gift
to Mother as literature
in pursuance of the Vedic
knowledge.

H.H. Satsvarupa das Goswami (Ret.): OLD FRIENDS

www.sdgonline.org. SDGonline Daily updates

From ISKCON in the 1970s: Diaries

“October 9, 1977

“Another day. 4–5 A.M. I chanted an hour. Only very minor movements by Srila Prabhupada. He mostly seemed peaceful.

“Now we are chanting in his room twenty-four hours a day. If he wants to speak, the chanting stops and everyone gathers around as close as possible. It doesn’t matter if the crowding near him looks awkward because he cannot see more than a few feet. His arms and legs are very thin. He lies back and his voice is small, but his face can still be expressive. Srila Prabhupada began asking about the prasadam here at Krishna-Balarama Mandir. TKG described all the different preparations taken at lunch. Everyone there spoke up and said they liked it. Srila Prabhupada was glad to hear the devotees were taking prasadam nicely. He himself has had no solid food in over one and a half months, yet he’s concerned to hear how the devotees are eating.

“Guru-krpa Maharaja said Srila Prabhupada has better friends than us in the spiritual world. They must be preparing a big reception for him. He will leave us pip-squeaks here. I said, ‘He’s taught us enough so that we can go there too.’

“Peaceful, sunny day, not very hot. Devotees taking lunch prasadam by the blessing of our spiritual father, our guide, our preceptor. Workmen are tearing down the old yellow brick building in the front yard. Why? They say it’s going to be where Srila Prabhupada’s samadhi will be located. Walking past his room, you hear the soft ching-ching of the finger cymbals and soft chanting in the dark room. Srila Prabhupada is either lying down, or rarely, sitting up. I don’t know so much all the details of his bathing or everything he might have said in the past few days.

“I heard that four or five of his Godbrothers visited last night. He asked them to forgive him his offenses. ‘If in the course of my preaching I offended you, please forgive me.’ They replied, ‘Jaya Gurudeva, Jaya Prabhupada,’ and gave him proper honor.

“Some GBCs are hoping to ask Srila Prabhupada some last questions.

“Hrdayananda Gosvami said that a year and a half ago, Srila Prabhupada said that his personal association was not very important (We remember a quote from years ago: ‘Personal association is for fools.’) Hrdayananda Maharaja said he feels confident he will go on in Krishna consciousness.  We both admitted anxiety over cooperation among top leaders and cooperation between top leaders and the mass of devotees. Hrdayananda said there were so many pitfalls in trying to spread a worldwide movement—these are only some of them.

“Everything is going along peacefully, it seems. Prabhupada said he’s not feeling pain. The consensus is that it’s a fact he’s going to leave, not stay. No one is misbehaving, devotees taking turns chanting. Jokes go on; those who are crude are engaging in the usual loose talks.

“I walked into his room at 2:00 P.M. Many GBC men were already there and he had just spoken to them. Abhirama showed me what he had said. He had written it down verbatim: ‘You all consult what you want me to do.’

Abhirama then asked, ‘About recovery?’

Srila Prabhupada: ‘I don’t want.’

Abhirama: ‘Recovery?’

“Srila Prabhupada nodded yes, and said to Tamala, ‘If I am to survive I must take some food. Otherwise, without food one cannot live. But survival means one complication after another. Therfore I have decided to die peacefully in Vrndavana. They want me to survive. I want to die peacefully. You consult. Whether I live or die, I will always be Krishna’s servant. Krishna wants me to do as I like; the choice is mine. Krishna has given me freedom to do. If I want to live, I must take care of this body. We cannot exhibit miracles by not taking cure and living. That is fanaticism. If you assure me that this movement will go on without me, then better let me die.’

“After this, it seemed like the end was at hand. I stayed and massaged his feet. Others went out. Then half an hour later they came back in. Kirtanananda wanted to speak to Srila Prabhupada. Everyone gathered around. He said, ‘Prabhupada, if Krishna has given you the choice, then we want you to stay. We need you.’ He was crying and couldn’t speak. Brahmananada Swami said, ‘We want you to stay ten years. Finish the Bhagavatam. Your work is only half-finished.’ Srila Prabhupada was affected by what they said. He yawned and said, ‘All right.’ After a while, he said (with wet eyes), ‘Thank you very much. Hare Krishna.’ Then he asked for grape juice and took it. Then he asked for plain strawberries, not juice. He heard Tejas was in the room and asked about the Hyderabad farm. On hearing they grew corn he said, ‘With corn you can make chapatti and something else—the villagers will like.’  He was back with us. He asked what the benefit of strawberries was. He was told they brought energy. I think he said, ‘This is real affection.’ These wonderful Vaisnava devotees have brought Srila Prabhupada back from death. I am strictly an outsider to these dealings. I thought, ‘I should serve these devotees, since I am not one of them.’

“TKG then said to Srila Prabhupada that he promised Krishna he would see Him installed in the Bombay temple, and the opening was set for January first. He would have to live to fulfill that promise. Devotees were pressuring Srila Prabhupada to choose to live, not die, because they needed him. Srila Prabhupada asked, ‘Kirtanananda? When will the Palace be ready?’ Kirtananada Swami said, ‘In early spring, just when the weather is nice. You can go to the Bombay opening and then come to the Palace. I have letters from fifty to seventy devotees in New Vrndavana begging you to come. They say they can’t live if you don’t come.’

“Prabhupada has decided to try to live on. He’ll take strawberries. Everyone was gathered around him. I don’t think he could say, but he said, ‘All right, now let me rest. But keep the chanting going on.’ He had said that to erect a big temple in Bombay after all that fighting was a great triumph.

“The whole thing has changed. Later the same day, Srila Prabhupada was speaking loudly. He quoted verses, including the verse, ‘One can live for hundreds of years in that way.’ He sat up and took a breath. Talked half an hour with Giriraja over bank matters, similarly at length with Ramesvara Maharaja about preaching in Tehran. The devotees are light-hearted, thankful Srila Prabhupada is going to live.

“We have to give him love and affection and impel him to stay with us—the pip-squeaks we are compared to his friends in Krishna-loka. A few days ago, talking of going to the palace Kirtananda Swami is preparing, he said something like, ‘We’ll have to see what palace I will be going to.’

“I saw Srila Prabhupada being bathed with a sponge. His body is like the picture of Rantideva—ribs sticking out, hipbones, no extra skin anywhere. To move any limb at all requires a servant’s assistance. The question is how he can gain weight.

“October 11, 4:005:00 A.M.

“He was talking to Svarupa Damodara about the scientific conference. ‘Be sure the guest house is cleaned. Talk scientifically, not foolishly. Philosophy means aham sarvasya prabhavo—mattah parataram nanyat—There’s no other philosophy. It’s a waste of time. You are scientist, now use it for Krishna and it will be your perfection.’ He referred to Maharishi’s levitation as ‘flies in the room—cockroaches in the commode. Travel everywhere with the scientific conference.’

“October 12

I cannot show my emotions, I am too frigid, ‘on ice,’ soul on ice. But I can acknowledge where I’m at. A cad. A dog. When Srila Prabhupada said he wanted to die, I was willing to allow him that wish to die peacefully.  But ‘Do not go gentle into that good night’—the loving, courageous devotees, Kirtanananda, Brahmananda and the others came in and insisted that Prabhupada should not die. Woe is me to be so cold and helpless, fallen into the false-ego existence of my ‘self.’ The only solace I find for this emotionless, loveless, deathlike cold heart of mine is to think of my BTG work.

“Cold and no love. Also weak, and no fight. No life—I look at the drama from outside. How has this happened to me? Did I take too much LSD and become devoid of the milk of human kindness (no mercy in the Age of Kali due to intoxication)? Or is my soul given to the illusory ‘goddess’ of writing? Face the facts—you are a cold turkey.

“But somehow, estranged, antisocial, I feel fixed in the Krishna consciousness movement. If anyone thinks I’m humble, that’s a joke.

“I thought, ‘God, I will need such intense purification and cleansing and fire of ordeal and tapasya before I can become a living, feeling Vaisnava disciple like these.’ I should serve them, but I never will, not in a million years.

October 13

Just moved my room here in Vrndavan. No chair here. Today is Thursday. Counting today, four more days here—then if Krishna desires, I will travel ten thousand miles or so back to L.A. and walk in the door of the BTG offices and pay obeisances to my Godbrothers there and immediately get to work on the December issue. Then I’ll get exhausted from the traveling and have to lie down.

“Since he has decided to live at our pleading, Srila Prabhupada’s condition hasn’t changed much, if at all. He has been taking glucose in his liquid. Earlier today there was some blood in his urine, which has been sent to the lab.

“Today some older women devotees, namely Shakti-mata and Srila Prabhupada’s sister, are here. Shakti-mata cooked full prasadam with love for Srila Prabhupada. It includes okra and all kinds of regular food. Kirtananda has been taking the role of trying to ‘force’ Prabhupada to take vitamins and medicine. Last night Srila Prabhupada submitted to him, but not today. Today Kirtanananda Swami protested Srila Prabhupada taking the heavy prasadam. He said, ‘Srila Prabhupada, you are transcendental and independent, but from a medical point of view you shouldn’t take this prasadam.

“Srila Prabhupada’s voice was weak, but he spoke with stern, firm will, teaching his disciple. He said, ‘Don’t hinder (my taking this prasadam). From a medical point of view, you can’t make a dead body alive.’

“Kirtanananda replied, ‘Your body isn’t dead.’

“Srila Prabhupada said with his unavoidable logic-force, ‘You say medical point of view.’ I say, ‘Is it possible medically to make a dead body live?’ (This means, ‘Medically speaking, your glucose treatment can’t work either, so why hinder my taking this full meal?’)

“Kirtanananda Swami repeated that it didn’t appear to him that Srila Prabhupada’s body was ‘a dead body.’

“Srila Prabhupada said, ‘Then you go to miracles.’ (Meaning that, ‘If you don’t think this body is dead, then you are speaking of it living, but actually it is dead. Therefore you are speaking of keeping it alive by miracles.’ He seemed to debunk miracles. Previously he had already debunked the ‘fanatical miracles of staying alive without eating,’ and said he couldn’t perform that.) He told us all to leave the room; he would eat as much as he could (without our staring at him) and then we should come back and hold kirtana.

“We sat in the other room. Bhavananda Maharaja said we should pray to Krishna for the miracle. Rupanuga spoke that the fire of digestion was Krishna. It will require that very thing—not a miracle—for Srila Prabhupada not to have a bad reaction to eating such food. He hasn’t eaten like that in a long, long time. In a sense, he’s saying he’d rather die than not eat this. ‘I’ve seen such a miracle ten years ago,’ said Kirtanananda Swami. (He meant when Srila Prabhupada left the hospital in New York after his heart attack,
against all medical advice.)

‘But this is a close one,’ said Bhavananada Maharaja. Everyone admits they can’t figure out Srila Prabhupada’s behavior. Symptoms, materially, continue to be bad. All that is good is praying to Krishna for the miracle to let him digest such food. Does he want that miracle? Is he defying the material ‘medical point of view’ because he already has a ‘dead body’? No matter how you look at it, he is utterly dependent on Krishna and is unafraid.

“October 14

“Today begins the scientific conference, the Bhaktivedanta Institute’s ‘Life Comes From Life.’ Srila Prabhupada is very interested in it. He wants to see them conducted all over the world.

“Do something ‘so I can see it before my departure.’

“Yesterday’s events were that Srila Prabhupada’s sister arrived, and he asked her forgiveness for offenses he may have committed. He said that once she came to see him and his disciples wouldn’t allow her, and this was an offense on his part.

“He’s also been asking his Godbrothers to forgive him. (She prescribed he eat a full lunch, and he did. Then later he asked her what else he should eat, and  she prescribed puffed rice, sugar and cream. He took this also but said he had ‘no taste.’ He had some sandesa also.) At lunch in the prasadam hall, we announced to the devotees that Prabhupada had taken more today than he had in nine months. Please pray that he can digest it.

“Srila Prabhupada expressed that his body is already dead, so what is the loss if he eats like this?

October 15th

“Last night Srila Prabhupada resumed translating work on Srimad-Bhagavatam. He was hearing the astrological position, which was all bad, weak health, strong disease, the patient may not recover, etc. But he said he should hear chanting. ‘Yes,’ he said, ‘hold kirtana.’ Prabhupada asked Pradyumna to begin reading Srimad-Bhagavatam where he had left off, in the translation verse. After Pradyumna read a verse, Srila Prabhupada asked him to give the transliteration and then the translation in English. After that, Srila Prabhupada began speaking a purport at length. That went on for four or five verses. Srila Prabhupada said, ‘So we shall do this every evening, and in this way complete it.’

“Also when the astrology was being read, Srila Prabhupada quoted a verse that for a devotee, all reactions are burnt up. I came in at 3:00 A.M. The Dictaphone was on his bed. Rupanuga was rubbing Srila Prabhupada with hot oil. Srila Prabhupada said he was getting rejuvenated from this rubbing. Rupanuga praised Srila Prabhupada for using every ounce of strength for Krishna—how it is an example for us. I spoke to Srila Prabhupada, noting that for the past two days he had asked for a full lunch, although he ate only a small portion. He said, ‘If this rubbing goes on, I think I can eat.’ Srila Prabhupada is giving out more and more personal mercy. I also got to rub him with oil.

“I had to rush away for a court case in America. Now sitting up all night at the Delhi airport.

“Bhagavatasraya and I were discussing in the cab from Vrndavana that:

“1. Srila Prabhupada has been showing us he exists apart from his body. He has become so refined that he is now spirit only—almost no body is left. Bhagavatasraya has pointed out that all of his movements are firm and precise, although extremely limited. He’s supremely conscious.

“2. He’s showing us how to leave the body, as each of us has to. Bhisma’s leaving has already been mentioned. The Pandavas were called just to see him give instructions in that condition.

“3. He’s showing how every ounce of strength should be used in devotional service. While lying in bed he’s dictating Srimad-Bhagavatam, although he’s not even able to hold the microphone or click the button.

“4. He’s beyond us. His most intimate servants admit they don’t know what to think. There are different opinions, but we shouldn’t speculate. His activities are certainly wonderful, now also.”

Subhavilasa das ACBSP, Toronto, CA: SHE is my Guru

This guru has taught me how to love Krishna.
This guru chants and chants for hours and does not take morning prasadam.
This guru so delicately offers flowers to Radha & Krishna that you can feel her love.

This guru sings songs while cooking and cleaning.
This guru has composed many songs and poems to Radha and Krishna.
This guru so lovingly puts Krishna to sleep, you know He will cuddle in His blanket.

This guru does not gossip/talk on phones for hours, avoiding Vaishnava apradha.
This guru has kept those around her engaged in Krishna bhakti.
This guru is straight forward in thinking and speaking.

This guru chastises me for offences.
This guru cherishes my service to Guru and Gauranga.
This guru lovingly feeds me Prasadama.

This guru will help me go back home...back to Godhead.
I am appreciative that Krishna has given me this guru and she is my Mom.
(You may know her as Ashalata devi dasi)

~ Indresh

I know Mother's day is not on the Vaishnava calendar but I consider respecting our parents part of Vaishnava culture and even more so when through great endeavor they have tried to keep their family (3 generations) Krishna Conscious. Our scripture does not mince words, for example in Srimad Bhagavatam (5.5.18) it states " One who cannot deliver his dependents from the path of repeated birth and death should never become a spiritual master, a father, a husband, a mother or a worshipable demigod."

So in this small way I wanted to appreciate my mom.
I have also included a video of her chanting...figuring some readers may want to put a face to the name.

(written by Indresh, son of Subhavilasa and Ashalata. Also in case anyone does not understand the gist in which I am using the term "guru", I am not reffering to diksha initiation)

Devadeva Mirel, Alachua, USA: Weekly Round-up!

It was a really slow online week for me. I felt a bit funky at the start of the week because my loved ones went away for four days prior on a beach bingo camping vacay and I stayed back with the littlest loved one of them all. I did not engage much with the computer because I was out and about trying to ingest as much sunshine as possible to keep my sprits up. So this week was more of a week of catch-up than seek-out. The round-up is short but ends on a sweet note. Click the pic to visit the original content. Onwards!

Kim Vallee is my new housekeeping superhero. This week she shared a revolutionary tip on her blog from Martha for keeping sheet sets sorted and stacked.

New York Magazine takes us on a slideshow adventure of quirky interiors. Most ghastly is Olek's art installment crocheted crazy house. Yes, even the loo has a sweater.

trendcentral features fresh knives for sale from city-mouse blacksmiths working out of NY and Brooklyn shops.

I am still trying to figure out this blog I stumbled upon last night. The Bearded Iris is an Atlanta mom with a poop obsession. She and her daughter take us on a step by step tutorial to make a fake turd. It's very eco-friendly. Still debating if this has any place on a food/kitchen/style blog but my gut instinct is telling me yes.

Toronto Sankirtan Team, CA: Altar of Sankirtan

We wish that thus mass of our body of flesh and blood may be sacrificed at the altar of preaching the samkirtan movement propagated by lord Chaitanya. We are not desirous of becoming a hero of work or a reformer of a religion, but our reality may be identified with the dust of the lotus feet of Sree Rupa and Raghunath for that is our everything...We shal have no love or hatred for anyone in this world. All arrangements made in this world are temporary. There is, therefore, unavoidable necessity for that ultimate need for every one in this world. You should atttain the transcendental loving service of the objective, being situated in concerted action for that one aim. Let there be constant flow of the ideas and thoughts as conceived by Rupa Goswam and His followers. We shall not at any time show our slightest dejection for the seven tongued 'Sankirtan' movement. If we have undaunted faith in it we shall then only achieve all protections. You should all therefore preach with fearlessness and with utmost energy the message of Rupa and Raghunath under the guidance of the followers of Sree Rupa.

Maddy Jean-claude Durr, New Govardhana, AU: Going to Gent and Sankirtana Saturday

Saturday 16th, April 2011.

We all piled into the bus for Gent.  I filled my trip time up by making a PowerPoint for my upcoming Vaisnava Vedanta Presentation (having not presented in the Friday group).

We arrived in Gent and went straight to the park for a picnic.  By the time we had finished our sandwiches, Partha Sarathi Prabhu and Rick Prabhu had already distributed a book.  A man had stopped, seeing so many colourful people, and they rewarded him with Srila Prabhupada’s mercy for his curiosity.

The harinam party came out in what Partha called the “staggered formation”.  Mahaprabhu Prabhu gave out three Tilak mrdangas, each a different colour and organized so the players made the image of the Belgian flag, as they walked along.  Bhakta Adam was leading, with the king of turbans on his brow.  The harinam speaker was cranked to kill.  It was the perfect mix to gather attention from the crowds of young, sophisticated citizens of Gent.

I was on the scene with Partha Sarathi.  It wasn’t long before we lost the harinam party (as always), whilst distributing a book to a girl in dreads with a Siva T-shirt.  Finally we caught up, just as Gopal Hari Prabhu began to lead.  We stopped by the riverside, inspecting large boats for a possible boat harinam, and Rick Prabhu gave a speech in Dutch to the people watching from the above bridge.

Soon enough we had Gopal Hari with us, skipping out on leading harinam so he could learn the ropes of book distribution from Partha Sarathi.  They sent me over to a bench to talk with a man who was watching the harinam.  I had a great talk to the guy, whose name was Peter, and coincidentally he was moving to Australia very soon.  I gave him my card, so I could send him information on our centres in Aus and gave him a book.

We struggled to gather everyone into the bus in the end, because they were so fired up to keep preaching.  The trip seemed to fly by and we culminated the experience with a pizza party in the restaurant.  Partha Sarathi was so impressed by the experience that we talking about the option of opening a centre in Gent, being filled with favourable and educated young folk.  It was surely a magical experience that was memorable for the sheer spontaneous bliss.

Yoga of Ecology, Bhakta Chris, USA: On Small Farms, Hoof Power Returns

How to Yoke Oxen
Stacey Cramp for The New York Times

Jake, left, and Joe work the fields at Sanborn Mills Farm in Loudon, N.H.

ON a sunny Sunday just before the vernal equinox, Rich Ciotola set out to clear a pasture strewn with fallen wood. The just-thawed field was spongy, with grass sprouting under tangled branches. Late March and early April are farm-prep time here in the Berkshires, time to gear up for the growing season. But while many farms were oiling and gassing up tractors, Mr. Ciotola was setting out to prepare a pasture using a tool so old it seems almost revolutionary: a team of oxen.

Standing just inside the paddock at Moon in the Pond Farm, where he works, he put a rope around Lucas and Larson, his pair of Brown Swiss steer. He led them to the 20-pound maple yoke he had bought secondhand from another ox farmer, hoisted it over their necks and led them trundling through the fence so they could begin hauling fallen logs.

Mr. Ciotola, 32, is one of a number of small farmers who are turning — or rather returning — to animal labor to help with farming. Before the humble ox was relegated to the role of historical re-enactor, driven by men in period garb for child-friendly festivals like pioneer days, it was a central beast of burden. After the Civil War, many farms switched from oxen to horses. Although Amish and Mennonite communities continue to use horses, by World War II most draft animals had been supplanted by machines that allowed for ever-faster production on bigger fields.

Now, as diesel prices skyrocket, some farmers who have rejected many of the past century’s advances in agriculture have found a renewed logic in draft power. Partisans argue that animals can be cheaper to board and feed than any tractor. They also run on the ultimate renewable resource: grass.

“Ox don’t need spare parts, and they don’t run on fossil fuels,” Mr. Ciotola said.
