H.G. Sankarshan das Adhikari, USA: Friday 25 March 2011--Krishna Is Just As Real As You Are--and--Why is Krishna Really Blue?
A daily broadcast of the Ultimate Self Realization Course(tm) Friday 25 March 2011 The Supreme Personality of Godhead, Lord Sri Krishna, and His eternal consort, Srimati Radharani are enjoying transcendental pastimes in the topmost planet of the spiritual world, Sri Goloka Vrindavan. They are beckoning us to rejoin them. (Click on photo to see a larger image.) Our Mission: To help everyone awaken their original Krishna consciousness, which is eternal, full of knowledge and full of bliss. Such a global awakening will, in one stroke, solve all the problems of the world society bringing in a new era of unprecedented peace and prosperity for all. May that day, which the world so desperately needs, come very soon. We request you to participate in this mission by reviving your dormant Krishna consciousness and assisting us in spreading this science all over the world. Dedicated with love to ISKCON Founder-Acharya: His Divine Grace A.C. Bhaktivedanta Swami Prabhupada, our beloved spiritual master, and to you, our dear readers. Today's Thought: Krishna Is Just As Real As You Are Uploaded from Bhaktivedanta Ashram--Austin, Texas USA Just as you are real and this world is real, the source of all existence is also real. And just as a gold mine must possess gold in order to produce gold, the existence mine from which everything is coming must have personality in order to produce so many personalities. That person who produces everything is supremely powerful because all of the characteristics that are found within existence must also necessarily be present in Him. It is not possible that you can possess something which the Supreme Person does not possess. Therefore just as you have names, that Supreme Person also has names. Just as someone who knows you can tell me your name, someone who knows God can also tell me what is His name. In this connection we have gotten information from Lord Brahma that God's name is Krishna or Govinda. Sankarshan Das Adhikari Answers According to the Vedic Version: Question: Why is Krishna Really Blue? I found a article from last week which gave an impersonalistic interpretation as to why Krishna is blue. Here is the article: In Hinduism, Gods like Lord Vishnu, Lord Krishna, Lord Ram and Lord Shiva are shown as having blue or dusky skin. The color of the skin is shown as either blue or sometimes black. Hindu religion is full of symbolisms and the blue color is also a symbol. Most avatars of Hindu gods are also shown in blue color. Blue is the color of the infinite. All Hindu gods are an attempt by the human mind to give form to the formless Brahman (God). The color blues symbolizes immeasurable and all pervading reality - formless Brahman. Swami Chinmayananda talking on the subject says that whatever is immeasurable can appear to the mortal eye only as blue; thus the cloudless summer sky is blue to us because the endless distance of space is interpreted by the physical eye as blue in color. The blue color thus teaches us that what appears as Lord Vishnu, Krishna and Shiva is the all pervading reality. Brahman (the Supreme Reality) takes a particular form to satisfy the human mind. So why is Krishna blue? I would like to submit the correct, bona fide answer to the site where I found article so that people can receive true, authentic spiritual knowledge. Thank you very much. Billy Answer: To Wonderfully Attract Everyone The article you have read is not in accordance with the Vedic conclusion because it states that God is formless and that it is only the human mind which attempts to give form to the formless God. This is totally incorrect. It is clearly stated in the sruti-mantras, the Sri Isopanisad, that God has a form: psann ekarse yama srya prjpatya vyha ramn samha tejo yat te rpam kalyna-tamam tat te paymi yo 'sv asau purusah so 'ham asmi O my Lord, O primeval philosopher, maintainer of the universe, O regulating principle, destination of the pure devotees, well-wisher of the progenitors of mankind, please remove the effulgence of Your transcendental rays so that I can see Your form of bliss. You are the eternal Supreme Personality of Godhead, like unto the sun, as am I.--Sri Isopanisad Mantra 16 Krishna or God is real person. All of the Vedic wisdom comes to the point of Krishna. He is vividly described as a real person, with a real body, with real activities. Because He is the Supreme Controller He can manifest any color according to His own choosing. The blue-black color He sports is not a symbol of formlessness. To manifest that amazingly splendorous blue-black form, which attracts everyone, is another one of His wonderful pleasure pastimes. ISKCON Melbourne, AU: Today's Darsana
25/03/11
Miniaturas
Once again Krishna doesn't fail to enchant us with His ever-relishable form. It is only out of His causeless mercy really that He descends in the material realm to enchant us with His pastimes that are truly beyond this world.
And the atheists dare to say that God doesn't exist and the Mayavadi proclaims that He doesn't have a form even while the Sahajiya defames Krishna's body to be made of matter.
"In spite of that, my Lord, I am praying to You to kindly fulfill my desire. May I please be informed how, in spite of Your transcendental form, You assume the mundane form, although You have no such form at all."
(S.B. 2.9.26).
So Sri Krishna kindly grants us His darsana as an answer to our prayers.

Japa Group: Without Conscious Effort
This morning is stood on the little bridge and looked down into the rushing creek. I heard the water over the rocks chanting and I thought, “Should I really try to answer more questions about japa?” I felt reluctant to go to the discursive level, and I was also afraid of presumption. I wanted to stay a simple villager, or even as simple as water running over rocks. I wanted to chant unconsciously, the way water flows down rocks or the way breath goes in and out without conscious effort.

H.H. Satsvarupa das Goswami (Ret.): 259—Poem for March 24
5:01 A.M.
A Writer of Pieces
New format—I will begin with a poem written on the day of its printing. Then I will print random excerpts of books I have printed over the last 30 years. I hope this variety will be pleasing.
Poem for March 24
It snowed all day, but the
asphalt roads are dry;
only the lawns and roofs
are covered in white. How
charming, but we wait restlessly
for warm spring.
We wait for the season where
we don’t have to wear big
coats and double pants,
and we can walk in Saci’s
backyard grass instead of the
dangerous car road. But winter hangs on as if
he’ll never leave. It’s like
the manifestations of my japa.
I wait until I can chant
with priti, with love
for the holy names.
Today I chanted fast and furious with no
pausing or sleepiness, completed my sixteen
in two hours. But
something was lacking.Lord, when will You allow |
me to enter the sacred land
of suddha-nama, saying
Radha, Krishna and Hare
with divine tenderness? It seems like it will never
come. I wait as I
wait for spring and
soft breezes and flowers
to enter the world. It’s up to me, isn’t it?
But if a drop of Your
mercy would fall
then everything would
be complete.• Email to a friend • •
H.H. Satsvarupa das Goswami (Ret.): OLD FRIENDS
From Japa Transformations (2010)
“3:00 A.M.
“Before beginning japa, I heard a tape of Dravida reading Bhagavad-gita As It Is. He read the verse that ‘One should approach a spiritual master and inquire from him submissively. The self-realized soul can impart knowledge unto you because he has seen the truth.’ Srila Prabhupada says that one has to pass the test of the spiritual master. One cannot just ask absurd inquiries but must accompany his questions with submissive service. The spiritual master has to come in disciplic succession and not manufacture teachings. This is a good verse to begin chanting japa, because the third offense is to disobey the order of the spiritual master.
“5:09 A.M.
“March mayhem, it’s already spring, I feel more alert for chanting. I really don’t know what the chant is. There are Sanskrit words for Krishna and His Consort. It’s a mystery to me. I enunciate them in a ‘foreign’ tongue. But it’s not actually foreign, it’s transcendental. I chant with trust in the acaryas and in scriptures. They speak in highest terms of the purifying power of the holy names. It is an offense in chanting to consider the glories of the names to be an exaggeration. You chant like a little boy doing what your father and mother have told you to do. Eventually you’re supposed to grow up and have some realization of the sweetness and potency. Until it comes, you cry for it. Or until you cry, you pray, ‘Please let me cry for it.’ Till you pray, you are chanting with offenses. But even that is beneficial.
“My spiritual master has taught us the importance of preaching, and he has given us stern orders to carry it out according to our individual capacities.
“He taught us Lord Caitanya’s method of chanting the holy names. It is easy to reach You by this method, but somehow we find it difficult. I pray to gain some facility in harinama and to infuse it with emotions of love for You and Srimati Radharani. Let me pray Hare Krishna, Hare Krishna, Krishna Krishna, Hare Hare. The prayer means, ‘O Lord, O energy of the Lord, please engage me in Your service.’ Let me enter the prayer-meaning and carry it out by Your strength infused in me.
“When You play with the gopis and tease them, it may appear like mundane dealings between a man and women to those who lack the divine vision. To those who hear of Your madhurya pastimes according to the teachings of the acaryas, Your sports with the gopis are the purest and highest expressions of spirituality. I want to gradually know You in this way. Please accept me as a sober but enthusiastic servant to learn of Your pastimes with Radharani, so I can enter Her shelter and be protected from false conclusions.
“I have at present no qualifications to approach You but ask that You help keep me attached to my Guru Maharaja’s teachings and actions. Only then may I actually hope to actually attain You.”
From the introduction to Japa Transformations (2010)
“Satsvarupa dasa Goswami’s new japa book presents the best of his recent maha-mantra meditations from his sacred cyberspace, the Yellow Submarine. Following Srila Prabhupada and other Gaudiya masters, the Writer-Captain takes his reader-mates aggressively deeper into the ocean of Hare Krishna meditation.
“Taking up his beads in the wee hours, Goswami first tackles the tongue ’n’ jaws of chanting, creatively weaving sacred texts with personal appeals and stories from ‘happy days’ with ‘Swamiji’ at 26 2nd Avenue. Now, a whole life later, he writes and chants as one of us who survives and thrives only by the mercy of the holy names, determined to go deeper into their glories and share them in daily gratitude.
From his ‘first transformations’ early on to his reality ruminations later, it is Goswami’s determination to surrender to the sweet sacrifice of chanting Hare Krishna, and living its deep meaning, that invokes the name’s blessings on both writer and reader, even when we seem to digress.
“The writer’s textual digressions into divine philosophy and play clearly enhance chanting because they are all about Nami, the person named by Nama, the Hare Krishna mantra. But what about when our Captain writes ‘In the Mix,’ when he takes us to the ballpark or the jazz club? Is the divinity there too?
“Divinity is everywhere, as we hear from the Bhagavad-gita, but only a heart surrendered to sacred sound will see God in the flight of a ball, or hear Him in the wail of a sax, and then let himself be led back to the Names, where the divinity plays, and to Prabhupada’s sublime prescription for all wandering minds: ‘Just hear.’
“In our self-obsessed times, Japa Transformations is a welcome reminder that the best way to find ourselves is to lose ourselves in loving service to the Lord’s holy names. Whether Goswami is writing to chant or chanting to write, his whole life is wrapped in sacred sound, as ours could be, and more than ever, his words are helpful and endearing. ‘The end of my book will have to be discovered at the end of my life,’ Goswami concludes. Like a spiritual retreat that comes home with us, Japa Transformations is a valuable companion to help us surrender our life’s breath to calling God’s hallowed names and to entering into His loving service at last.”—Suresvara Dasa (A.C.B.S.P.), writer and teacher
From Obstacles on the Path of Devotional Service
“‘My Dear Mind’“As with other obstacles, the Vaisnava acaryas are aware of the obstacles presented by the wayward mind. They have expressed this struggle in ‘Prayers of the Mind.’ Some of the favorites are Bhaja Hure Mana by Govinda dasa, Manak-Siksa by Raghunatha dasa Goswami, and Bhaktisiddhanta Sarasvati Thakura’s prayers to his mind. Bhaktisiddhanta Sarasvati prays, ‘O my mind, why aren’t you a Vaisnava?’ Each of these verses can be studied carefully, and they will help us to better understand the dilemma of the uncontrolled mind.
“In their songs to the mind, the acaryas recognize that the mind is different from the real self. They often identify the mind as being a non-Vaisnava. The devotee enters into a dialogue with the mind and makes strong appeals in favor of Krishna consciousness. The intelligence or soul speaks to this uncontrollable person, the mind. The higher self does not have complete control of the situation, but he makes his appeal, ‘My dear mind, please be a Vaisnava. Why are you lusting after women? You should know that all women belong to Krishna.’ And Bhaktisiddhanta Sarasvati Thakura asks, ‘My dear mind, why are you lusting after fame? Do you not know it’s not better than the dung of a boar?’
“Let us not describe our friend the mind only in a negative way. Sometimes when we rise early we are in a peaceful state, and we begin to chant japa with the cooperation of our friend. The scriptures give us the analogy of the chariot driver and the horses. The driver is compared to the intelligence, and the reins are compared to the mind. When we chant in good consciousness, we can feel the pull of the reins (the mind), but we maintain control. When a driver is conducting powerful horses, he is not angry with them or fighting against them, but he enjoys the control and also the pull of the horses. When the horses are running quickly, under control, it is an exciting cooperation. When we chant nicely, we will find that with a slight effort we send messages to the mind, ‘You are doing very nicely; please continue chanting the holy names.’ But we remain vigilant, and as soon as the mind veers a little to the left we tug it back onto the main road. We warn our friend, ‘Do not go after sense gratification.’ And neither do we completely ignore the mind. If the mind repeatedly says, ‘But it’s too hot in here, it’s too hot for chanting,’ we may reply, ‘All right my friend, I’ll open the window, but you just keep on chanting Hare Krishna Hare Krishna, Krishna Krishna, Hare Hare/ Hare Rama, Hare Rama, Rama Rama, Hare Hare.’ When the mind finally submits to chanting the Lord’s names, then mind, body, intelligence and soul all enjoy a samadhi of transcendental loving service. In this state of intimate union with Lord Krishna we can easily deal with any obstacles that appear on the road.”

Toronto Sankirtan Team, CA: Power of Prabhupada books
I barely had strength to go on sankirtan for 5 minutes today and I guess people could see my fatigue and every ‘no’ from them was sounding so heavy – but suddenly this man stopped. He told me we had met before 2 months ago. I asked him if he had taken a book from me and he said he had taken the Bhagavad gita and he even confirmed he had read bits of it. I offered him another book and his first reaction was that he has his own practice and no more books. So I did not push him but then he asked me “I have read that Bhagavad gita, what this Krishna consciousness is?” I exclaimed it was a beautiful question and tried to answer his question with examples on how we imagine happiness to be a by-product of senses and sense object interactions but it never happens and frustrates us. I told him how we need to look for the ultimate pleasure object of the senses Krishna and as he is eternal and unlimited we will be happy. We discussed several examples and then he asked me “How do you make others see this”. So I told him we start from the point of purifying ourselves and instead of looking down upon others we look at them with compassion and try to serve them in a mood of humility. I gave him examples of how he can make prashad and sing kirtan etc. Then he asked, ‘what is the process of purifying yourself?’ By this time I was shocked so I asked him, would you do it if I told you. So I asked him to repeat the maha mantra after me but he said – no no mantras, I have my practice I don’t want to leave. So I said no problem, I will tell you a small mantra ‘Gauranga’ and then I continued to explain to him how sound vibration transforms consciousness, giving various examples. By this time he was holding the path of perfection in his hands. This was now turning into a class and he finally asked the most important question – ‘what does that mantra mean, the one that you were asking me to repeat’So I shared with him the Hare Krishna maha mantra and explained the meaning and how it works on the dirt in our heart. He himself gave a generous donation for the book and asked me when is the discourse in the temple. He was such a sincere soul, I encouraged his practice and complimented his mother who I commented had a strong influence on him. He was very surprised and asked me how did I know. Remembering Srila Prabhupada’s words to one of his disciple’s parents I said “ When the fruit is so nice, you can judge that tree is wonderful” He was a genuine soul so affected by just a few words of Srila Prabhupada’s books, he left saying he would come again and I pray that he does.• Email to a friend • •

Madhava Ghosh dasa, New Vrndavan, USA: Pesticides Tied to ADHD
Pesticides tied to ADHD in children in U.S. study
(Reuters) – Children exposed to pesticides known as organophosphates could have a higher risk of attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), according to a U.S. study that urges parents to always wash produce thoroughly.
Researchers tracked the pesticides’ breakdown products in children’ urine and found those with high levels were almost twice as likely to develop ADHD as those with undetectable levels.
The findings are based on data from the general U.S. population, meaning that exposure to the pesticides could be harmful even at levels commonly found in children’s environment.
“There is growing concern that these pesticides may be related to ADHD,” said researcher Marc Weisskopf of the Harvard School of Public Health, who worked on the study.
“What this paper specifically highlights is that this may be true even at low concentrations.”
Organophosphates were originally developed for chemical warfare, and they are known to be toxic to the nervous system.
There are about 40 organophosphate pesticides such as malathion registered in the United States, the researchers wrote in the journal Pediatrics.
Weisskopf said the compounds have been linked to behavioral symptoms common to ADHD — for instance, impulsivity and attention problems — but exactly how is not fully understood.
Although the researchers had no way to determine the source of the breakdown products they found, Weisskopf said the most likely culprits were pesticides and insecticides used on produce and indoors.
Garry Hamlin of Dow AgroSciences, which manufactures an organophosphate known as chlorpyrifos, said he had not had time to read the report closely.
But, he added” “the results reported in the paper don’t establish any association specific to our product chlorpyrifos.”
Weisskopf and colleagues’ sample included 1,139 children between 8 and 15 years. They interviewed the children’s mothers, or another caretaker, and found that about one in 10 met the criteria for ADHD, which jibes with estimates for the general population.
After accounting for factors such as gender, age and race, they found the odds of having ADHD rose with the level of pesticide breakdown products.
For a 10-fold increase in one class of those compounds, the odds of ADHD increased by more than half. And for the most common breakdown product, called dimethyl triophosphate, the odds of ADHD almost doubled in kids with above-average levels compared to those without detectable levels.
“That’s a very strong association that, if true, is of very serious concern,” said Weisskopf. “These are widely used pesticides.”
He emphasized that more studies are needed, especially following exposure levels over time, before contemplating a ban on the pesticides. Still, he urged parents to be aware of what insecticides they were using around the house and to wash produce.
“A good washing of fruits and vegetables before one eats them would definitely help a lot,” he said.

Srila Prabhupada's Letters
1966 March 24:
"Chaturthi. The temple house seems to be occupied. Do not know whether sold or rented out. I am mortified. Let Lord Sri Krishna's wish be fulfilled. But it is a great shock to me if it is now gone to others. Captain Pandiya with Mrs. Pandiya came to see me. They are happy and I was so pleased to see them. They will come tomorrow again. Three ladies and three gentlemen besides the captain and his wife attended the meeting today. Mr. Robert brought some fruits & grains for me."

Subhavilasa das ACBSP, Toronto, CA: In the News: "the methodology of worship is known as bhakti yoga..."
An excerpt of another article in the Alligator...
Hare Krishna (ISKCON) The International Society for Krishna Consciousness, or ISKCON, was founded in the ’60s in New York City. Members propagate the teachings of Krishna, as laid out in traditional Hindu scripture, mainly the Bhagavata and Bhagavad Gita.
In ISKCON, the methodology of worship is known as bhakti yoga, encompassing methods of studying, worshiping and understanding Krishna. For example, members often chant or sing the Maha Mantra, the holy names of Krishna and Rama. Other aspects of the religion involve creating a strong, supportive community of believers and living a simple, natural way of life. Members refrain from eating meat, fish and eggs and abstain from any substance that causes intoxication. This encourages their four-part Dharma, which consists of mercy, austerity, truthfulness and cleanliness.
Learning more about the religion and lifestyle propagated by the Hare Krishna movement couldn’t be easier...

Toronto Sankirtan Team, CA: One meeting with a devotee
I was walking back from work and it was really windy. And then I saw a man come out of the grocery store and his whole face was covered by his cap and all you could see were his eyes. I said Hi and asked if he has ever heard of yoga or related things. He said yes and explained how he read a lot and was specially into Tantrik yoga - that was his thing. I told him he should check out the Bhagavad Gita and that would help him. Looking at the Gita he said yes i know about this and I have it. So then I showed him the Isopanishad and Krishna book explaining these were more advanced texts and he was all enthusiastic. We walked into a shop to get some change and thats when I started to explain to him that we have a monk coming in this Sunday for a special program. And I asked him if he had met one before - Much to my surprise he said yes and explained that he was at the temple a few months ago and had seen a tall, white, American monk and heard from him. I asked him if he was wearing white or saffron clothes and he explained it was whitish - we all know who that was - HG Vaisesika Prabhu. All glories to the association of pure devotees that get people back ! He left taking Krishna book, Isopanishad and perfection of yoga.• Email to a friend • •
H.H. Satsvarupa das Goswami (Ret.): 258—Poem for March 23
Poem for March 23
I offer the incense
from my heart and mind
sincerely praying for long
life and autobiographical odes.May the incense smoke curl
around Radharani, who looks
seriously into my face from
Her determined look out
over to Krishna with His
strong arm, down to
servile, dark, bell-metal
Hanuman, begging on one knee
and up to the four Asvini
Kumaras. I apply myself
out a few moments in
non-fictive pleading to all
of them.Go on chanting forcefully
accumulating the quota
before it’s six A.M. It’s
chilly in the room, and
you need sweatshirt
and shoes,
you have
the day ahead and
hope to make a genuine frank episode
of Prabhupada or ISKCON
something that swells out of
writing practice and becomes
a true and moving portrait.
You pray not to fail in
these attempts but make
as real as a trillium head,
as candid as the birds in the
yard and worth saving
inserting in the pages of
the authorized autobiography.• Email to a friend • •
H.H. Satsvarupa das Goswami (Ret.): OLD FRIENDS
From Alligator Says and I Say
“Alligator also said something about the past. We go to our past to get material to write about. When we do that we set into motion two processes. One is transmitting memory into understanding. Alligator asks, ‘What is left? What will be left is most worth keeping.’ I’m not exactly sure what that means. My past, what does it mean? I get attracted to it, the pain and the funny things that seem uniquely mine. Krishna conscious philosophy tells me most of it is maya. The fact of consciousness is not maya, and maybe that is maybe the most wonderful thing I am attracted to. When I remember picking blackberries or nervously going to a first party of boys and girls, the thing I am really remembering is that I existed. As I exist now, and as I will exist in the future, so I existed in the past—and memory verifies this. ‘I was there!’ This is what I recall. And when I relive it with the senses, the smell of sea, or whatever, it comes unasked for and seems to be a gift leading to transcendental realization. At least one can face the memories of the past in this way. Why not? Who is stopping us from doing it this way as an aid to Krishna consciousness.
“Some of these things I recall I may write down. This brings up the point about writing being a sharing. Alligator seems to assure that we write in order to share. But I’m trying to see that sharing is almost like an editorial decision. Ours is an ethical life decision, a compassion, or it is following the order of the spiritual master, who wants our writing to be preaching, and not merely self-improvement. But when I am writing I don’t want to think too much of sharing. This is the exciting and new-for-me area of the writing practice that I’m entering into more. You just write by yourself in praise of Krishna, and try to become free of maya, try to surrender to Prabhupada, try to make an art too, but you don’t think, “I’ll do this nice, select it and make it so it can be shared.” That comes later, or it is done separately. Okay, there is an element of awareness that I am sharing too. But the important thing is to plunge ahead. Enough talk of this.”
From Before It’s Too Late (1993)
“I remember Bombay—the lights on in the hotel room, the marble floor, our own bathroom . . . the elusive present moment, present day . . . the big old typewriter on the desk, but little time or presence of mind to use it. Always a crunch wherever you are in the world of going to write when you are hungry and empty and dumb.
“I remember going to hear about Krishna. Quietly going down to mangala arati, the wealth of the ISCKON hotel in the Hare Krishnaland Mandir. Quiet, tropical weather, the walk on the beach. Prabhupada is never far away here. So much to do. Misgivings that I didn’t meet with someone who wanted to see me.
“The look on Dr. Patel’s face as he encouraged Tamala Krishna Maharaja and Giriraja Swami to take the Deity caranamrta before him. Then he took it himself, the creamy liquid in his palm. A few moment I looked back and saw him again. He looked old and sad, distant and lonely. Feeling neglected I suppose.
“I remember Srila Prabhupada on the vyasasana under a light, a whole gazebo of a vyasasana—almost a little chapel unto itself. I went and touched his feet under his saffron silk.
“I remember our plane landing in Ahmenabad and the crowded airport. Two sannyasi members of Swami Narayana’s group wearing fez-shaped turbans and red dots on their foreheads … and I don’t remember so many other things. I remember the feeling of time passing, then noticing that it had all passed. I watched the bright marigolds in the garden. My first impression of the temple was that it was a house, with no outer sign to indicate that it was a temple. Gradually I grew to know the place.
“M. and I joke about the ‘double talk’ of so many Indians. They never speak straight about what time a program will be held, how long it will take to drive there, and whether we will go or not. Expect anything, even after you think that you have made all arrangements. Indian ‘standard time.’ Indian evasiveness, Indian gentility and the honor they give all sadhus.
“Tonight is the last night of our fifteen-day stay outside Vrndavana. There is no program for me. I anticipate a safe journey tomorrow with Ayodhya-pati Prabhu in his van. Last time, we did the same thing. We drove in record-breaking time two hours, fifteen minutes (to Vrndavana), keeping himself alert.
“This is a time to read and chant more. All of the house is quiet; I could even venture out into the hall and pace back and forth. I’m the skinny guy I see in the bathroom mirror. All my ribs show, even my breastbones and shoulder blades. Whenever I tell Madhu I’m too skinny, he says I can’t gain weight until I can digest better. I think it has something to do with being in Vrndavana, in India. Back in Vrndavana I won’t gain weight. Ayurvedic medicines help me keep going.
“I am looking forward to wearing the big sweater and socks someone brought me from Nepal. I’m looking forward to staying in a room where people can’t barge in on me directly. The cold weather won’t be so friendly. I’ll be exposed to it behind heatless walls, especially because my room has no window to let the sun in. But the sun and roof are a luxury.
“I promise myself ten more days in which to write Before It’s Too Late. End it on my 53rd birthday, December 6th.
“There will be big stacks of mail to answer. That will disrupt the simple seclusion of life at the Sant Colony. If I can ration it out an hour a day, I can gradually answer mail without becoming overwhelmed.”
From The Best I Could Do
“The littleness of your fingers and fingernails. The guy has finally come to this retreat and is too tired to say much. ‘Let me just lay back,’ he says. Don’t push so much with your schedule. Why substitute the travel and lecture schedule with yet another demand, a demand of your inner writing life? Can’t you do what you want for an afternoon? Go ahead, read in those fair-acre pamphlets about desert fathers if you want. You will discover. You quickly found out you weren’t interested in William Burroughs’ dream book and the jazz tape, surprisingly.
“But I don’t want this stuff to filter into my book. If I don’t write but putter around, that doesn’t seem right. If I try to do both, then the puttering filters into the book. So what? Is the book supposed to be an ivory tower? I don’t mind if you tell me what you were doing when you got release from the demands of your travel and lecture. I don’t mind. Just don’t get lost in some other world.
“Don’t read the Sunday funnies or sport page or—anyway, you’ve got a bad ankle, so I know you cannot walk off somewhere in the afternoon hills. And you’re a sannyasi, that limits it. No women. You don’t like to use the telephone. This room is small and not so much natural light. You don’t eat extra when you don’t know what to do. You don’t sleep extra. And if you draw too much, it won’t be right or fun, or you could get a headache. But go ahead …
“Just passed about fifteen minutes to read on prayer. I liked what it said about accepting yourself as you are when you pray, not as an ideal person of prayer. I also accepted the point that prayer isn’t easy going, but its purpose is to surrender to God, to offer yourself to be made in His will. But then stuff about passivity, I wasn’t sure about that. She said you could start prayers with using imaginative gifts like writing a poem or painting a picture, but these are just the early stages and you have to go beyond it. When we first begin, our prayers are superficial and we want to get something from it, ‘instead of grasping that the essential heart of prayer is throwing away of ourselves in simple self-oblation to God . . . Any form of prayer that does not stimulate love to give all soon becomes dry and sterile, a formal duty or even a mantra, as in some forms of non-Christian prayer.’
“Her negative attitude towards the mantra is understandable. She probably takes it as some mechanical act, as if we think the mantra is magic, and you just say it over and over. Prabhupada also condemned such mantra-uttering. He says it must be done with priti, love. He says that Krishna never said you can make offerings with Vedic mantra, with love. Then what is the place of the holy name, Hare Krishna mantra? It has to be uttered with love. However, it is so powerful that even one uttered with offenses, it cleans sin.
“‘What are you getting at by discussing these subjects in your book? Are you threatening to give the book writing up, to go beyond, to be a saint in silence, interested in quiet throughout the afternoon, doing nothing?’ No, no. I just mean to say, govindam adi purusam tam aham bhajami.
“Could you just do tortoise shells?
Huh?
Could you just paint fancies and not care for art?
Could you chant an extra round
in the empty house?
I could chant, but I’d count it as ‘one extra round
to make up for negligent mantras.’
I could walk around the empty house
and that would be nice. But don’t expect me
to quit this book.
I never asked you to.
Could you do the tortoise shell,
could you—you mean like Alice in Wonderland?
No, your own. Your own.
Could you do the . . .
yeah, yeah, I could, kid,
but don’t bother me just now. I’m trying
to figure out
how to use this retreat and write
a book (bestseller) and to pray.
Like ‘non-Christian’ prayer?“One should not remain continually implicated in household affairs up until the time of death. He must leave. (Bhagavatam 3.25.5, purport).
“The Lord continued, ‘My dear mothers, devotees who receive such transcendental opulences are never bereft of them; neither weapons nor the change of time can destroy such opulences. Because devotees accept Me as their friend, their relative, their son, preceptor, benefactor and supreme deity, they cannot be deprived of their possessions at any time.’” (Bhagavatam 3.25.38)

Yoga of Ecology, Bhakta Chris, USA: Fighting A Common Enemy On The GMO Battlefield
Fighting a Common Enemy on the GMO Battlefield
Posted on January 28, 2011 by Heather
From the excellent and informative website for the Center For Food Safety. Click here to check it out
Yesterday’s announcement by the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) that it will once again allow unlimited, nation-wide commercial planting of Monsanto’s genetically-engineered (GE) Roundup Ready alfalfa, despite the many risks to organic and conventional farmers, is deeply disturbing, but not surprising.
For the past four years, there has been a ban on the planting and sale of GE alfalfa, as a result of a lawsuit brought by the Center for Food Safety (on behalf of farmers) against USDA. In 2007, a federal court ruled that the USDA’s approval of GE alfalfa violated environmental laws by failing to analyze risks such as the contamination of conventional and organic alfalfa, the evolution of glyphosate-resistant weeds, and increased use of glyphosate herbicide, sold by Monsanto as Roundup. The Court banned new plantings of GE alfalfa until USDA completed a more comprehensive assessment of these impacts via an environmental impact statement (EIS). The Ninth Circuit Court of Appeals twice affirmed the national ban on GE alfalfa planting. In June 2010, the U.S. Supreme Court upheld the ban on Monsanto’s Roundup Ready Alfalfa until and unless future deregulation occurs.
Last spring more than 200,000 people submitted comments to the USDA highly critical of the substance and conclusions of its draft EIS on GE Alfalfa. Instead of responding to these comments and concerns, including expert comments from farmers, scientists, academics, conservationists, and food safety and consumer advocates, the USDA has chosen instead to listen to a handful of agricultural biotechnology companies.
USDA’s decision to allow unlimited, nation-wide commercial planting of Monsanto’s GE Roundup Ready alfalfa without any restrictions flies in the face of the interests of conventional and organic farmers, preservation of the environment, and consumer choice. USDA has become a rogue agency in its regulation of biotech crops and its decision to appease the few companies who seek to benefit from this technology comes despite increasing evidence that GE alfalfa will threaten the rights of farmers and consumers, as well as damage the environment. CFS will be suing on this decision, and we anticipate we’ll have to litigate on GE sugar beets and other pending approvals as well.
In the aftermath of USDA’s decision on GE alfalfa, some are harshly criticizing organic companies that favored a compromise. But make no mistake. USDA’s final decision is only supported by agricultural biotech companies – not organic food companies such as Stonyfield Farm or Whole Foods – but by Monsanto and the other biotech companies that produce and sell GE alfalfa. While the Center for Food Safety and other advocacy groups may have some differences with the position originally taken by some organic food companies, these companies are not the enemy.
In the coming months, we will be seeing USDA proposals to allow unrestricted plantings of GE sugar beets, and GE corn and soy crops designed to resist toxic pesticides such as 2-4D and Dicamba, highly toxic pesticides that pose a serious threat to our health and the environment. To win these critical and difficult battles, the entire organic community, and our allies in the conventional food and farming community, will have to work together. Now is not the time for organic infighting, but rather a time for us to come together to fight a common enemy and work to protect our farms, our food, and our environment.
