H.G. Sankarshan das Adhikari, USA: Tuesday 22 March 2011--Why I am a Theist--and--What Does "Bona Fide" Mean?

A daily broadcast of the Ultimate Self Realization Course(TM) Tuesday 22 March 2011 The Supreme Personality of Godhead, Lord Sri Krishna, and His eternal consort, Srimati Radharani are enjoying transcendental pastimes in the topmost planet of the spiritual world, Sri Goloka Vrindavan. They are beckoning us to rejoin them. (Click on photo to see a larger image.) Our Mission: To help everyone awaken their original Krishna consciousness, which is eternal, full of knowledge and full of bliss. Such a global awakening will, in one stroke, solve all the problems of the world society bringing in a new era of unprecedented peace and prosperity for all. May that day, which the world so desperately needs, come very soon. We request you to participate in this mission by reviving your dormant Krishna consciousness and assisting us in spreading this science all over the world. Dedicated with love to ISKCON Founder-Acharya: His Divine Grace A.C. Bhaktivedanta Swami Prabhupada, our beloved spiritual master, and to you, our dear readers. Today's Thought: Why I am a Theist Uploaded from Bhaktivedanta Ashram--Austin, Texas USA Religion is grossly misunderstood both by its adherents and its detractors. The word religion comes from the Latin word religio, which means to re-link or to reconnect. So the real meaning of religion is to re-link or to bring ourselves back into harmony with the complete whole, the source of our existence. Atheism means to deny that we have a source or an origin. But you can't show me anything that comes out of nothing. Everything comes out of something. Therefore we must come out of something. There is a complete whole of which we a part. The part of a thing is always meant to harmonize with the whole thing of which it is a part. That is its natural healthy state. Therefore in my natural, healthy state I must be in harmony with the complete whole, the origin of my existence. Therefore, I am a theist, a person who wants to be in harmony with the source of his existence. To not want to be religious or in harmony with the very ground of your being is sheer madness. Sankarshan Das Adhikari Answers According to the Vedic Version: Question: What Does Bona Fide Mean? I read your Thought for the Day everyday. It has helped me a lot. I see that you are regularly using the word bona fide. What does it mean? Your servant, Om Answer: He's Not a Quack or a Charlatan Bona fide means genuine, not counterfeit, without fraud or deceit. We regularly use this term in reference to the spiritual master to teach people how to distinguish between the genuine, authorized guru and the bogus gurus who have become so prevalent and all-pervading these days. Bona fide guru means that he is not a cheater. Krishna or God is the original guru, and anyone who purely represents Him is a bona fide guru. Those who present the highest truth as something other than Krishna, such as the unborn, unmanifested that is within everything are not bona fide spiritual masters. They are cheaters and bluffers of the worst description who teach their disciples that everyone is God. The bona fide spiritual master is not such a quack or a charlatan. He is the pure representative of Lord Sri Krishna because he never presents his own ideas. He simply purely presents the teachings of Krishna exactly as he has heard them from his spiritual master. This is why he is bona fide. Bharatavarsa.net: Bhakti Vikasa Swami: Dress to please Krsna

>From "My Glorious Master" by Bhurijana Prabhu (page 227).

-------

Prabhupada: Why your dress is not as a sannyasi?

Tusta Krsna: The robes make people uncomfortable, Prabhupada. They see you as different and can't relate. They won't relax enough to listen when I wear robes.

Prabhupada: But sannyasis must dress in saffron with robes and shaven head.

Tusta Krsna: I am following all the principles, but the dress is external and superficial. Why should we let it hamper the preaching?

Prabhupada: If the dress is superficial, why should you change your dress to please people who are so serious about superficial? (Pause) You understand my point? Superficial people become controlled by superficial and external things. Why do you dress to please superficial people? You should dress to please Krsna.

Tusta Krsna: So you would like me wear saffron and shave up?

Prabhupada: Yes, I want you to promise this. Only wear saffron and keep your head shaved. This is sannyasi dress. You should promise.

Tusta Krsna: Yes, Prabhupada. I promise.

Subhavilasa das ACBSP, Toronto, CA: In the News: Festival of Chariots - One of the biggest festivals of Mumbai

Picture
Mumbai, Maharashtra, March 18, 2011 /India PRwire/ -- On 26th March, 2011, over 1,50,000 people will congregate for the Chariot Festival at Shivaji Park, Dadar (west), Mumbai organized by young professionals of International Society for Krishna Consciousness (ISKCON).

These professionals take three to four weeks off every year from work to organize this festival. ISKCON is proud of its young force which is happily dedicating its life in the service of humanity at large. This in true sense is Art of Giving i.e. serving the society with your skills, money and resources. ISKCON with over 500 centre's across the world is one of the leading non-profit organization which has undertaken massive projects like the Mid Day Meal which serves free meals under the Government scheme to over half a million children across India, Health Camp - conducted several times during the year providing free service to over 5,000 patients every year, Venu Madhuri project focusing on rural empowerment and development, Govardhan farm project - Wada - which in true sense is meant to teach the principles of simple living and high thinking. Some of these projects address the problems which the Corporate India has been facing since quite some time.

Teachings of Founder Acharya of ISKCON HDG AC Bhaktivedanta Swami Prabhupada can certainly help in eradicating the problems of frauds and other criminal activities which are on rise. 2G Scam, Money laundering issues, Depression, Suicides etc. are some of the challenges. Today due to change in lifestyle people have stopped believing in traditional values which has led to increase in Greed in the human society. People today want to achieve better lifestyle by hook or crook. This year some of the leading companies in India like Videocon, JSW, Piramal Group, Welspun, Kwality Walls from Hindustan Unilever Limited, Karnik Homes, Tata Mutual Fund, Arvind Mafatlal Group, Srinathjis etc. are participating in this festival to encourage the youth of ISKCON for all they have been doing. Japa Group: We Will Get Attracted And Attached

Yesterday's audio post about developing our eagerness really reminded me of our duty to make efforts to attain the Lord's reciprocation by giving everything when we chant. By this mercy of reciprocation from Krsna, we can get eagerness to continue and increase.

When we wake in the morning, we will think "Now it is time to chant the Holy names" - during the day we will chant the Holy names in our mind and during our sleep we will dream of chanting.

This kind of eagerness develops naturally when we make this step towards the Lord, and He can take many thousands of steps towards us and we will get attracted and attached to this wonderful chanting.

West Bengal celebrates Holi with traditional fervour

... The International Society for Krishna Consciousness (Iskcon) at its global headquarters at Mayapur in Nadia district observed the day as the birth anniversary of the 16th century Vaishnav saint and social reformer Chaitanya Mahaprabhu.

The devotees placed idols of Radha-Krishna on decorated palanquins and carried them. They also offered prayers to Radha-Krishna on this special day of Dol Purnima (Dol is celebrated on a full moon day)....

Jahnavi, UK: Spring Kirtan!

On Saturday I joined in the annual celebration of Sri Chaitanya’s birth. Known as Gaura Purnima, it marks a momentous day for all practitioners of kirtan and bhakti yoga. Chaitanya may have only been personally present more than 500 years ago in India, but his legacy is vibrant and pulsing with the same energy today. He protested against priests who wanted to keep the chanting of sacred names of God as an exclusive practice within the temple, and brought sacred song to the streets. This caused uproar at the time, but the power of his actions soon overwhelmed any protestors and much of Eastern India, as well as pockets of the West and South fell in love with the practice of kirtan. In this way, different classes, castes and genders were united. My friend Gaura often calls him one of the first non violent social reformists. In honour of his birthday, we paraded down Oxford Street, chanting and dancing, waving flags and handing out sweets. It was all quite jolly. Kirtan continued late into the night, and the next day too.

Yesterday I visited Oxford with my dad for another kirtan with the lovely group there, organised by Keshava. It’s always a treat, and yesterday was no exception. Sun streamed in the windows and we were blessed to have a group of enthusiastic singers, including many who had never attended a kirtan before. One girl came all the way from Manchester just to find out what it was all about! They hold events every month – the next on the 19th April. Please come along if you can – and come early to explore Oxford – it’s a fantastic place. It feels like breathing there makes you more intelligent!

More to come: this coming weekend my dad and I will lead a kirtan retreat in Ireland. It’s happening at a place called Inisrath – a beautiful Victorian house on an island near Co. Fermanagh. There are still a few places left if you feel like booking a last minute ticket. It’s sure to be a great event, run by the Lake Isle retreat team who are well seasoned in offering delicious organic food, alternative therapies as well as spiritual philosophy.

Coming up in London is our next kirtan at Yogabase in Islington on 2nd April. I’ll be there with some wonderful friends and guest singers from 6.30pm onwards. Our recent dates there have been truly enlivening, so if you can make it, please join us.

Jahnavi, UK: Pulse Magazine Now Online

Pulse magazine is the UK’s only dedicated publication for South Asian dance and music. It’s been running for a good few years and I’ve nearly been subscribing since the beginning. I first read a copy aged eighteen, thrilled to find a magazine that connected me with a wide community of people who shared my interests and discussed and wrote about them in an intelligent, thoughtful way.

Dancer Seeta Patel - photo by Simon Richardson, as published in Pulse

A couple of years ago I started writing for Pulse – mostly reviews as well as recently, my own series of articles on sacred music and the way it interacts with different areas of society. A new website has just been launched where you can now view the latest issue for free. Soon the opportunity for digital subscription will also be created, but for now, enjoy this month’s issue that celebrates the life of Rabindranath Tagore in his 150th year. You can find my article on ‘Sacred Music in the Street’ on page 18.

Jahnavi, UK: Voices Across Oceans

I often moan about the way technology influences my life. I remember the days when I didn’t own a mobile phone; when I actually received handwritten letters in the post and when a keyboard was something I played music on. It was kind of nice to not be accessible at every moment – or at least to be up against the expectation that I should be.

Now, after travelling for the past five years on and off, my once fairly small social circle has exploded to include thousands, across continents and timezones. It can be quite overwhelming to stay in touch, or just understand the nature of those relationships, kept alive by Facebook messages and occasional Skype calls.

The other day though, I thanked God for technology. I met a wonderful lady in Melbourne this year – a fellow Hare Krishna who also happens to love Carnatic music. While I was there we shared a happy hour swapping songs and ragas, and she told me how she’d been doing the same with another lady she knows in India. So last Friday morning we all met up on a conference call to have a music lesson – morning in London, afternoon in Coimbatore and evening in Melbourne. It was so enlivening, and unexpectedly easy, given that we couldn’t even see each other (which I know is possible too). We learnt ‘Jamuna Kinare’, a bhajan in Hindi by the Carnatic composer, Swati Thirunal. Below is a version sung by Prince Rama Varma.

Ahh. Sharing music gives me a warm feeling inside. Perhaps I can live with Skype after all.

Dedicated with love to ISKCON Founder-Acharya: His Divine Grace A.C. Bhaktivedanta Swami Prabhupada, our beloved spiritual master, and to you, our dear readers. Today's Thought: Become A Moon and Illuminate the Universe Uploaded from Bhaktivedanta Ashram--Austin, Texas USA Krishna Das Kaviraja describes that the devotees of Lord Caitanya illuminate the entire universe: jaya r-caitanyacandrera bhakta candra-gana sabra prema jyotsnya ujjvala tri-bhuvana All glories to the moons who are devotees of the principal moon, Lord Caitanyacandra! Their bright moonshine illuminates the entire universe. --Caitanya-Caritamrita (Adi 13.5) For this wonderful verse Srila Prabhupada gives a purport as follows: In this verse we find the moon described as candra-gana, which is plural in number. This indicates that there are many moons. In the Bhagavad-gita the Lord says, naksatrnm aham a: Among the stars, I am the moon. (Bg. 10.21) All the stars are like the moon. Western astronomers consider the stars to be suns, but Vedic astronomers, following the Vedic scriptures, consider them moons. The sun has the ability to shine powerfully, and the moons reflect the sunshine and therefore look brilliant. In Caitanya-caritamrita Krishna is described to be like the sun. The supreme powerful is the Supreme Personality of Godhead Sri Krishna, or Lord r Caitanya Mahaprabhu, and His devotees are also bright and illuminating because they reflect the supreme sun. The Caitanya-caritamrita (Madhya 22.31) states: krsna--srya-sama; my haya andhakra yhn krsna, thn nhi myra adhikra Krishna is bright like the sun. As soon as the sun appears, there is no question of darkness or nescience. Similarly, this verse also describes that by the illumination of all the moons, brightened by the reflection of the Krishna sun, or by the grace of all the devotees of Caitanya Mahaprabhu, the entire world will be illuminated, despite the darkness of Kali-yuga. Only the devotees of Lord Caitanya Mahaprabhu can dissipate the darkness of Kali-yuga, the ignorance of the population of this age. No one else can do so. We therefore wish that all the devotees of the Krishna consciousness movement may reflect the supreme sun and thus dissipate the darkness of the entire world. (end of purport) Just see what a wonderful order Srila Prabhupada has given to the members of the Krishna consciousness movement! He has expressed his desire that they should be moons and reflect the Krishna sun for the illumination of the entire world! Just as the reflecting power of a mirror depends on how clean it is, the members of the Krishna consciousness movement will be potent moons for dissipating the darkness of the Kali Yuga according to the degree of their purity. Therefore we must always strive for the utmost purity in our Krishna consciousness for the sake of the fallen, conditioned souls of this age. I am realizing that I am in a dream, and that my dream is within another. How do we awaken ourselves from all of them? I feel as if my Krishna consciousness is awakening, yet I am not yet moving from this dream-nightmare. Why do I have to wait for the dream to be over? Why can't I end it right now? I am awakening Krishna consciousness. Why can't I be with Him 100% right now? Joe Answer: Understand and Be Who You Are To end the dream, you simply have to understand and accept that you are the eternal servant of Krishna and fully surrender yourself to Him through the transparent via medium of His pure representative, the bona fide spiritual master.
