H.G. Sankarshan das Adhikari, USA: Wednesday 23 March 2011--Are You Ready for Death?--and--Do I Have to Chant "Krishna"?

A daily broadcast of the Ultimate Self Realization Course(tm) Wednesday 23 March 2011 The Supreme Personality of Godhead, Lord Sri Krishna, and His eternal consort, Srimati Radharani are enjoying transcendental pastimes in the topmost planet of the spiritual world, Sri Goloka Vrindavan. They are beckoning us to rejoin them. (Click on photo to see a larger image.) Our Mission: To help everyone awaken their original Krishna consciousness, which is eternal, full of knowledge and full of bliss. Such a global awakening will, in one stroke, solve all the problems of the world society bringing in a new era of unprecedented peace and prosperity for all. May that day, which the world so desperately needs, come very soon. We request you to participate in this mission by reviving your dormant Krishna consciousness and assisting us in spreading this science all over the world. Dedicated with love to ISKCON Founder-Acharya: His Divine Grace A.C. Bhaktivedanta Swami Prabhupada, our beloved spiritual master, and to you, our dear readers. Today's Thought: Are You Ready for Death? Uploaded from Bhaktivedanta Ashram--Austin, Texas USA Time and tide wait for no man. At any moment we can be ripped out of our bodies by the exacting law of death. So instead of foolishly dreaming that we will never die, we should intelligently face up to the inevitable reality and prepare ourselves for our eternal existence, full of knowledge and full of bliss, by immediately taking complete shelter of Lord Sri Krishna, the Supreme Personality of Godhead. Sankarshan Das Adhikari Answers According to the Vedic Version: Question: Do I Have to Chant Krishna? Dear Sir, Hare Krishna! Can you tell me please why the name of the Lord is now Krishna. For many years I have been chanting a different name. Do I have to change now? Dennis Answer: Any Name of God Can Be Chanted Since God is unlimited, there have always been unlimited names for God. Therefore can chant any one of the unlimited names for God and achieve the supreme perfection of going back to home back to Godhead. The name Krishna is one of the names and is the most important because it contains all of the other names of God within it. It is not some new invention. God has always especially loved His name, Krishna. Chanting Hare Krishna is especially recommended for those who want to quickly become very dear to the Lord. This civilization will collapse very soon, all over the world. It will collapse. Either you may bring this ism or that ism, this civilization will collapse. People will become mad, being harassed in so many ways. When one is harassed in so many problems, he commits suicide. So that position is coming.

Toronto Sankirtan Team, CA: How old is the sankirtan movement - Srimad Bhagvatam 7.15.71

Sańkīrtana means chanting of the holy name of the Lord. The Hare Kṛṣṇa movement is not a new movement as people sometimes mistakenly think. The Hare Kṛṣṇa movement is present in every millennium of Lord Brahmā's life, and the holy name is chanted in all the higher planetary systems, including Brahmaloka and Candraloka, not to speak of Gandharvaloka and Apsaroloka. The sańkīrtana movement that was started in this world five hundred years ago by Śrī Caitanya Mahāprabhu is therefore not a new movement. Sometimes, because of our bad luck, this movement is stopped, but Śrī Caitanya Mahāprabhu and His servants again start the movement for the benefit of the entire word or, indeed, the entire universe.

Nityananda Chandra Das, Dallas TX: Where was God in Japan?

Whenever tragedy strikes and innocents and children are harmed the natural question arises.  Where was God?  If there is is a God how can there be tragedy?  Is God capable but unaware?  Is God unaware but capable?  Or is God compassionate at all?  Such questions should be addressed rather than pushed aside in an effort to protect blind faith.

When I was young boy I had a sister who although born completely healthy, had suffered some hospital caused complication and nearly died.  However her survival was short lived as the complications caused brain damage and her tiny body was only able to endure two more years.  This all took place I think when I was about 11 years old.
Events such as these, wherein someone who has yet to even commit any harm is harmed, brings up the question.  What is the justice of God? Also known as Theodicy.   A major catastrophe does not need to be in effect for the question to arise, anyone can see the apparent differences in wealth, health, peace, faith and intelligence that a human is faced with right from birth.  Some born healthy some not.  Some born wealthy some one.  Some born in a religious social setting and some in places where the concept of God does not exist.
What is God’s responsibility?  A provider has a natural responsibility for his dependents.  Even a store manager is held accountable for the behavior of his employees.  So when one of God’s prime employees, Mother Nature, kicks our butt, who do we go to for accountability?
This question of accountability has plagued various religions.  As so far I have not seen any tradition that accept the born soul paradigm, the idea that the soul is born with body,  deal with this question in a satisfactory way.  However the Bhakti tradition, the ancient Vedic tradition from India gives a clear picture as to why a person may suffer even before they have done any sin.  The concept of reincarnation takes into account that we all have lived many many lives and also have a great stock of karma, reactions, good and bad, from our previous lives.   According to the Bhakti tradition God is the perfect protector.  No one can enjoy or suffer anything that is not within their destiny due to previous deeds.  And although someone be placed in lands or circumstances with people of similar karmic debts, such as the reaction of a airplane crash or earthquake, there is no value judgment.  Much unlike the recent Youtube video of young religious fanatic who prayed for atheist to suffer, the Vaishnava, or true theist is pained at others suffering and pleased at other happiness.   The devotee of the Lord, the Vaishnava, understands without judgment that they themselves have stocks of debts as well.  Anyone who is in this world has debts from their previous lives.  Therefore the compassionate devotees, and the Lord Himself, do not condemn but rather are ever diligent to help souls from suffering.

Freedom from suffering comes from bhakti, spiritual life.  Not only does bhakti destroy reactions to karmas of the past and destroys the desire for a materialistic life for future but also in the very present it reduced and eliminates suffering allowing the soul to experience itself on the spiritual platform.
As Jesus, while being taken to be nailed to the cross told the crying women on the street. “Women of Jerusalem, stop crying for me. Instead, cry for yourselves and for your children,”  For such a pure devotee and yogi does not suffer the pains of the body.

We all suffer only due to our own misdeeds and the Lord can free us completely from all suffering immediately in as much we give up the propensity to sin and exploitation.
Hare Krishna

Devadeva Mirel, Alachua, USA: Recipe : Vegan Red Velvet Cake 2 Ways + {Naturally} Colored Buttercream

beet juice...not beetle juice

Lately, I’ve been getting into cake making. And decorating. And eating. Yes, a lot of eating. The eating part has not been going that well–or maybe it’s going too well. I want to continue making cakes and practicing my decorating (basically, I am dedicating Bindu’s babyhood to perfecting the rose frosting technique). Since I am hoping to reduce my bodily cake stores, check back weekly with an eye for cake giveaways! That’s right. Since I don’t want to decorate my cake and eat it too, cakes will be awarded to readers on a first come, first comment basis. Fun!

But let’s stop with the jibber jabber about the future and focus on the delicious natural foods recipes I have for you today.

Bored and uninspired by the vanilla of white frosting, but put off by the neon lack-of-appeal of chemically induced color, I’ve been experimenting with vegetable juices for color. And I figured, while I have the juicer out…
I might as well make the most of it. Since I was planning on desiccating beets for their juice, I decided to do something with the masticated vegetable pulp the juicer left behind. After researching red velvet cake and vegan recipes, I learned that the cake’s color originated from beets. We’ve come a long way since then and the cake has been degraded by food science and red coloring. Here we take the cake back to it’s roots with this crimson root vegetable. Below are two recipes–one for BLACK VELVET CAKE and the other for RED VELVET CAKE. Additionally, I have a recipe for naturally colored frostings.

Here’s a little fun fact about this cake: it will do your bowels good. Yup, lots of fiber. Lots of nutrition. No beety taste, I promise!

as soon as i began adding the color into the frosting, i was woooed.

black velvet cake with naturally pink vegan buttercream frosting

Using vegetable juice to color frosting is great. Beets produce an amazingly bright pink color. Carrots create a sunny orange. Purple cabbage makes frosting lovely in lavender. I didn’t notice any changes to the taste of the frosting except for the cabbage frosting.  Yes, it smelled like cabbage farts. But a little lemon extract totally neutralized the odor and brought the frosting back from the olfactory realm of flatulence.

Japa Group: His Life Is Chanting

His life is chanting, but his life’s activities have to be pure in order to chant. Our movement depends on offenseless chanting, and spiritual advancement depends on offenseless chanting, whatever your particular service is. At the same time, to take to the mercy of the holy name and grow spiritually, you must avoid the sinful activities: illicit sex, gambling, intoxication, meat-eating, and be very faithful in service to the spiritual master. This combination will make the perfect advancement.

Memory in the Service of Krishna (1990)

Considering just a few of the many expert analyzes of material and spiritual life we come to appreciate with awe the wisdom of Vedic knowledge. For example, men can be divided into categories of karmis, jnanis, yogis and bhaktas. How much wisdom is packed into that analysis! And there are three modes of nature—goodness, passion and ignorance—which interact in many mixtures. All human behavior can be detected according to these gunas. We can learn from Bhagavad-gita how austerity should be performed, how we should pursue happiness, how we should work, how we should be determined, and how we should eat.

Whoever is without this Vedic direction is groping. Despite the best intentions, a person may commit serious mistakes, such as the mistake of thinking that animals have no soul and so there is no reaction for killing them. Or someone may think that after reading enough books he can become a teacher and advocate that one can do whatever he likes and attain perfection. As a result of such teachings, a self-appointed guru paves his way to the worlds of darkness.

My dear Lord Krishna,
my dear Srila Prabhupada,
sometimes it’s too hard
to know what I should do
to serve you.
But at least I know
basic right from wrong.

There is no excuse now.
I know what’s right,
because I know Your will
and I accept it
as my way.

You may punish me for wrongs
as Your erring servant,
but whatever you do
I remain your devotee.
Please give me courage
to teach your way
to those “who do not
know what is to be done
and what is not to be done.”
Please free me from the wrong
of complacence,
as if simply being “right” were enough.

Devadeva Mirel, Alachua, USA: Pictures : Soapstone Tile Pizza Stone

my soapstone pizza stone

A reader asked for a look-see at my soapstone tiles I use for pizza making. (Yes, I am aware of the questionable English in that opening sentence). Here they are. I got them when I got my sink. I chose Barocca soapstone because the tiles were on sale. I have to say, it is a really beautiful soapstone and I was a bit pained to use it but whatevs. It works well for our pizza making. The soapstone is naturally light gray with a lot of mica (I think it’s mica) flecking. Sparkly! My ovens are small so they needed to be cut down. That’s pretty much all I have to say about that.

Madhava Ghosh dasa, New Vrndavan, USA: Fighting Grape Vines

The snowdrops have been blooming along the road to cabins by the lake in New Vrindaban and the early daffodils are almost ready. We drive past them because we, my son Tulasi and myself, have been going up to the Garden of Seven Gates to clear some land for planting nut trees.

There is a strip of land between the road to Manasaganga’s and the fence of the garden that has been let go wild. It will be a great place for nut trees as the access will be easy and the ground is currently unproductive.

There are some weed trees that have grown in there that need to be cleared. It has been quite challenging to cut them as they are infested with fox grapes.  A useless weed grape that has no useful fruit but tries to make up for that lack by vigorous tree choking growth. I had approached the temple’s wood cutter suggesting he cut them for wood for the temple, something he would be doing anyway, but he didn’t want to get involved with them.

I like to have all my wood for next winter up in the pile by the end of April as that gives it all summer long to cure out and cured wood is the most efficient to burn. I was going to have to cut some anyway so I decided I would go ahead and donate my time to the project and take the wood in exchange for using my equipment and gas.

I had plenty of wood to cut on my own property that would have been faster to cut but this needed to be done and rather than hire someone to do it, it was cheaper for me to take the wood as exchange. It is the labor that makes the value in firewood.

GEETA (the corporation that cares for the cows in NV), also soon to be known as ECO Village, was using some of its gas money to fund tree planting in New Vrindaban. I got a budget to work with and this nut tree planting was one component of it. The goal is 1000 fruit and nut trees in ten years.  We did get 200 planted the first two years of the project and this spring it looks like we are going to get well over 200 planted. That includes the temple plantings plus private plantings subsidized by ECO Village.

The trees were very challenging to cut because of the grapes.  In one place where there were 4 6″ diameter (.15 m) close together we cut three of them  and they remained standing, being all intertwined with grapes with the remaining tree.

Last fall I had bought  a power pole pruner and we had to use that to cut through all the grapes to get the trees to fall.  It is like a little chain saw on the end of a 6′ (1.8 m) pole that you can reach up and cut limbs or, in this case, grape vines with. Like a weed whacker with a chain saw on the end of it.

We couldn’t get all the vines because they grow 20 and 30′ (8 m) but enough so the weight of the trees can often pull then down, at least closer to the ground so we can cut through the vines some more.

Another problem with the vines is that when you cut a standing tree, it doesn’t always hinge at the point of the cut, but the butt can swing back towards you.  So it is dangerous and takes a lot of planning and care.

Tulasi is learning how to use the chain saw, and when cutting an aiming notch did it too deep and got the blade pinched. I chastised him mildly and pointed out his error.  Rookie mistake. They say repetition is the key to learning and he got that when later I was cutting an aiming notch and failed to account for the torque  the vines were exerting on the tree and also got the blade pinched.

Fortunately I have an extra blade and chain so we could disconnect the main part of the saw from the blade and put the extra on it in order to cut above the pinched blade to free it (them).

The whole endeavor was further complicated by there being an electric power line running parallel to the road we were working along.  Several trees would have hit it if we had dropped them the way they leaned, so some ropes and aiming notches were required to avoid them.

The whole thing is like solving a puzzle, how to drop trees laced with vines and avoid power lines, but we are making a little progress each day.  I can only do it for a couple of hours before I get exhausted, but sure and steady wins the race.

me (indresh) & my wife (kishori). We smelled like balls of onions after being surrounded by smelly food for hours. We did not get to eat all day but evening prasad made up for this...see tomorrow's post...
Picture
1st shift
Picture
2nd shift
An opportunity arose to do a book table at a Holi festival being held at a banquet hall. The organizers were charging for sponsor tables but offered ISKCON a no charge table. There was some discussion between Radha Mohan das and myself, whether or not to do the table  considering the environment. Not wanting to hurt the sentiments of the the organizers offering the table, seeing this as a sankirtan opportunity and confirming my sis and mom were willing to split the shift, we ultimately decided to invest the Sunday and set up the book table.

The "environment concerns" centred around the possibility of alcohol and non-vegetarian food being served in a mundance setting complete with bollywood numbers. In the Toronto MSF (Monthly Sankirtan Festival) promotion the inspiring quote that was chosen this month was:
In distributing love of Godhead, Caitanya Mahāprabhu and His associates did not consider who was a fit candidate and who was not, nor where such distribution should or should not take place. They made no conditions. Wherever they got the opportunity, the members of the Pañca-tattva distributed love of Godhead. The flood of love of Godhead swelled in all directions, and thus young men, old men, women and children were all immersed in that inundation. The Kṛṣṇa consciousness movement will inundate the entire world and drown everyone, whether one be a gentleman, a rogue or even lame, invalid or blind. CC Adi 7.23-26
With such an appropriate quote how could we not set up a table...

So when we got there we were greeted by a Holi Festival poster complete with a Radha Krishna picture (mind you a BBT copyright one) overlooking a questionable venue. We were shown an area for 1/2 of a 3' table and after a bit of debate we grabbed our 6' table from the car and set it up right next to the bar...yes the bar. We watched as people grabbed their drinks, plates of non-veg food and watched performers gyrate to bollywood music.

The day after Gaura-Purnima you cannot help to think of Chaitanya Mahaprabhu and Lord Nityananda's lila with Jagai and Madhai. In this case we have Indians born the land of Krishna that have forgotten their rich Vedic culture and have abandoned it for cheap alcohol and eating dead bodies in an attempt of "Holi" fusion. To add to the saddness there were some people that you see now and then at the temple as well as kids of congragation/devotee parents paying and partakining  in this "Holi" event.

We diligently promoted Srila Prabhupada's books knowing that the souls that are supposed to get these books would and we can simply act as instruments trying to humbly offer these books. One child around 10 years old looked through the books and liked the Krsna book. He told me that he "likes Krishna" and I told him he would "Love Krishna" after reading this book. He asked (begged) his dad to get the book and I also encouraged his father, telling him how fortunate he was that his son was interested in Krishna. I told him that half his job is already done. But his answer was....NO. On this "holi" festival people were interested in promoting and showing off Hiranyakashipu's characterisitcs. Holi celebrated Bhakta Prahlada and his bhakti and character that defeated Holika and ultimately Hiranyakashipu but people have forgotten this. But this example shows you a kids desire and reflections of Bhakta Prahlada and a older Indian gentleman that has forgotten his Vedic culture and is displaying reflections of Hiranyakashipu where chastises his child and drags him from Krishna.

Anyhow, in this environment it was our duty to sprinkle the mercy of Sri Chaitanya Mahaprabhu and bring back remberance of Bhakta Prahlada and the real purpose of Holi. In this humble attempt over 20 big books were distributed  (over $300 in Laxmi points).

It also reinforced that book distribution to Hindus/Indian community is also vital, since despite of their outward appearance and birthplace they need to be reminded of their Vedic history. Srila Prabhupada clearly stated that " There is a misconception that the Krishna consciousness movement represents the Hindu religion" however he gave great importance to preaching to Indians inside and outside of India to remind them of this bona-fide philosphy. Srila Prabhupada also instructed my dad to preach to Indians. He wanted Indians to back up ISKCON to show the world that this was bona-fide Indian culture. For example from October 1976 Srila Prabhupada states "Let all the Indians say that this is bona fide. Have profuse testimony. Collect testimony in London and Toronto. Ask SubhaVilasa to collect opinions that this is bona fide Indian culture."

I am glad in these humble attempts we might be pleasing Srila Prabhupada in some small way.

P.S. there is some sweet nectar that followed this book distribution outing this past Sunday...wait for the next post.

1972 March 22: "In New York I have seen many rich publishing houses but I do not see many rich book writers. Are we simply handing them everything while they take all the profits and we get nothing? Srila Prabhupada's Letters

1972 March 22: "I am always glad when my disciples exhibit good sense. Now you simply stick very closely to the regulative principles and always keep yourself so much engaged that you will be too much busy serving Krishna to think about other things. Your husband shall remain with me to learn Sanskrit. I do not think it will be practical for you to join your husband just now, but perhaps later we shall see."

Srila Prabhupada's Letters

1974 March 22: "Our Vrindaban temple is perhaps our nicest building in the whole movement and I want at least 25 good men here at all times. Those who come here must be exemplary and whether grhasthas or sannyasis, must behave like real Goswamis so that all the people of Vrindaban will see that we are actually followers of the six Goswamis headed by Rupa Goswami."

Toronto Sankirtan Team, CA: A rescheduled flight or Krishna's arrangement

I was sitting at the airport thinking about how I was missing the opportunity to distribute books, I had books in my bag but did not know what to do. I was also working on something that required me to reach out to High schools and was wondering how to get some feedback from someone who is in high school. Suddenly around that time a big man stopped by and asked me if he could share the power point and I said sure. I thought I should try to give him a book but not knowing how I thought I will just take out the Bhagavad gita and let it do the rest as I don’t know what to do. As soon as I kept the Gita on the chair between us, he asked me if he could play his DVD and I said sure I will put my ‘meditation’ tapes – it was a hint but he did not take it L so then he played this aerobic type dvd and was doing some moves siting on chair. So I asked him if he was doing aerobics and he said no he was training cheer leaders. So i asked him if he ever tried Yoga to help them and he said he appreciated it. And then on his own he pointed to the Bhagavad Gita and expressed how he liked trying these. I immediately handed him the Gita and asked him to try it out. We opened it up and he read some sanskrit and checked out pictures and read comments at the back. He was really appreciating so i asked him what he did - turns out he was teaching High school kids. So i thought it was time to give him devotional service - as I was working on some events for high school students. So we discussed the event titles and what would work well. As he was leaving I asked him to chant Gauranga and he repeated it after me. Having repeated it he was so happy and said he would go back and teach Gauranga to all his students, read the Bhagavad gita on his fight and give the Bhagavad gita to his daughter.
We don't need to sell Bhagavad Gita - they automatically attract the ones who are meant to get them.

Bharatavarsa.net: Book distribution seminar: Gaura Purnima Sankirtana lila from Okinawa,Japan

Dear Prabhus,

Please accept my humble obeisances. All glories to Srila Prabhupada.

Yesterday an amazing thing happened while Gita Govinda was on Sankirtana.Ê I was out chanting with a mrdanga in my usual spot and my friends walked by with a donation box for the earthquake victims.Ê I called them over and dropped a 500 yen gold coin in their bucket and gave them a mantra card for their daughter. Gita also gave a small donation on Gaura Purnima but I did not know that until later. I had come back after fasting all day, took a little Prasad, and then passed out!! My phone rang four timesÊ but I was really down so missed 4 calls from Gita Govinda.Ê She walks in the door with a huge smile saying, Nuja I met Tiger mask today! (Tiger mask is several people in Japan who go around silently handing out money or goods by package discreetly) She pulls out a wad of 10,000 yen notes and counts to 16! WOW!! 160,000 yen for a Krsna book and a Light of the Bhagavat! That is about $2,000 usd...what can we say? GAURANGA!!!!! The generous man declined to take more than two books saying they would be too heavy to carry. Fortunately she woke me up after an hour and we both continued Sankirtana until 12 midnight.Ê I should say His most merciful, munificent and magnanimous name again and again...GAURANGA!!!!!

Vraja Kishor, JP: “I Speak the TRUTH!!!”

Understanding, mural by Robert Lewis Reid. Sec...

Image via Wikipedia

Truthfulness is a particularly interesting good quality.

It seems that all good qualities are inter-related. How can one be truthful without first being able to discern truth from illusion (intelligence, knowledge and freedom from doubt)?

I lack forgiveness. I am not able to be silently satisfied because I lack control of my mind, of my senses, so I blurt out my “truthful” remarks. I rush to be “truthful” but actually all I am trying to do is get a verbal slap in edgewise against someone or something I bear a grudge against.

I label what I say as “truthful” but the truth is I am simply insulting.

“Truthfulness, means that facts should be presented as they are, for the benefit of others.”

Two important requisites for “truth” are:

a) To understand what the facts really are.
b) To communicate them in a way that others benefit from.

Regarding (a): I can certainly stand to be more realistic about my capacity to flawlessly understand “the facts.” I should be more realistic to know that these “facts” are just my understanding of the facts. Even when a perfect teacher guides me to understand facts, I have to know that I am an imperfect student, and therefore what I obtain from my teachers is simply my limited understanding of “facts.” Not being so haughty about ones ability to “know the truth” will go a long way to stop one from being insulting and arrogant.

Regarding (b): Even when I do somehow get the facts straight, “truthfulness” means to present those facts for the benefit of others. Therefore to speak “truthfully” means to communicate the facts in a way that the audience will embrace and understand. The “truth” cannot be spoken in words that cloud understanding by inflaming emotions of pain and resentment. The truth is spoken in just the right words, at just the right time, in just the right circumstances.

Under the guise of “truthfulness” I have insulted and hurt many people. Therefore I have written this in hopes that it will help myself and others in similar situations to stop.

This topic arises in relation to discussing Bhagavad Gita 10.4-5

Japa Group: We Will Get Attracted And Attached

Yesterday's audio post about developing our eagerness really reminded me of our duty to make efforts to attain the Lord's reciprocation by giving everything when we chant. By this mercy of reciprocation from Krsna, we can get eagerness to continue and increase.

When we wake in the morning, we will think "Now it is time to chant the Holy names" - during the day we will chant the Holy names in our mind and during our sleep we will dream of chanting.

This kind of eagerness develops naturally when we make this step towards the Lord, and He can take many thousands of steps towards us and we will get attracted and attached to this wonderful chanting.
