H.G. Sankarshan das Adhikari, USA: Thursday 30 June 2011--Prestige Seekers are Forgotten--and--How to Be Aloof from Aloofness?
bb A daily broadcast of the Ultimate Self Realization Course Thursday 30 June 2011 The Supreme Personality of Godhead, Lord Sri Krishna, and His eternal consort, Srimati Radharani are enjoying transcendental pastimes in the topmost planet of the spiritual world, Sri Goloka Vrindavan. They are beckoning us to rejoin them. (Click on photo to see a larger image.) Our Mission: To help everyone awaken their original Krishna consciousness, which is eternal, full of knowledge and full of bliss. Such a global awakening will, in one stroke, solve all the problems of the world society bringing in a new era of unprecedented peace and prosperity for all. May that day, which the world so desperately needs, come very soon. We request you to participate in this mission by reviving your dormant Krishna consciousness and assisting us in spreading this science all over the world. Dedicated with love to ISKCON Founder-Acharya: His Divine Grace A.C. Bhaktivedanta Swami Prabhupada, our beloved spiritual master, and to you, our dear readers. Today's Thought: Prestige Seekers are Forgotten Uploaded from Sydney, Australia In this material world everyone is looking for prestige, but no matter how much prestige they may accrue, they will still be completely humiliated by unavoidable death. And in due course of time all the reputations of even history's most prestigious heroes will vanish into oblivion. The pure devotees, on the other hand, are not seeking personal prestige. They simply desire to spread the name and fame of Lord Sri Krishna all over the world. But because Krishna desires that His pure devotees should be more prestigious than Him, the pure devotees of Krishna automatically become the most famous, prestigious persons in the history of the universe. Sankarshan Das Adhikari Glorifying Krishna at a Home Program 28 June 2011--Sydney, Australia http://www.backtohome.com/images/2011-Spring/Sydney_Home_Prgm.JPG Answers According to the Vedic Version: Question: How to Be Aloof from Aloofness? Why are we trying to find happiness in the material world even if there isn't any? How can Krishna consciousness teach me how to remain aloof from aloofness? How can I control my mind in a manner that is favorable for Krishna consciousness? Can you point towards any verse in Bhagavad Gita directing towards this? P.R. Answer: Engage Whole World in Krishna's Service Because our nature is to always enjoy happiness we naturally try to find happiness in this material world even though it is a place of misery. While the impersonalists adopt a mood of aloofness to try to free themselves from the miseries of material existence, the devotees of the Lord reject aloofness by engaging everything in the service of the Lord. Thus they become liberated from this material existence even while they are still living within it and relish the sweetest happiness at every minute. The method for always having a mental attitude which is favorable for your Krishna consciousness is to always remember Krishna. In Bhagavad-gita 9.34 Krishna instructs us to always think of Him: man-man bhava mad-bhakto mad-yj mm namaskuru mm evaisyasi yuktvaivam tmnam mat-paryanah Engage your mind always in thinking of Me, become My devotee, offer obeisances to Me and worship Me. Being completely absorbed in Me, surely you will come to Me. Sunday Feast lecture on Bhagavad-gita, Chapter 3 (Karma Yoga), Text 10 given by Giriraj Swami.

TRANSLATION
In the beginning of creation, the Lord of all creatures sent forth generations of men and demigods, along with sacrifices for Vishnu, and blessed them by saying, "Be thou happy by this yajna [sacrifice] because its performance will bestow upon you everything desirable for living happily and achieving liberation."
PURPORT
The material creation by the Lord of creatures (Vishnu) is a chance offered to the conditioned souls to come back home -- back to Godhead. All living entities within the material creation are conditioned by material nature because of their forgetfulness of their relationship to Vishnu, or Krishna, the Supreme Personality of Godhead. The Vedic principles are to help us understand this eternal relation, as it is stated in the Bhagavad-gita: vedais ca sarvair aham eva vedyah. The Lord says that the purpose of the Vedas is to understand Him. In the Vedic hymns it is said: patim visvasyatmesvaram. Therefore, the Lord of the living entities is the Supreme Personality of Godhead, Vishnu. In the Srimad-Bhagavatam also (2.4.20) Srila Sukadeva Gosvami describes the Lord as pati in so many ways:
The praja-pati is Lord Vishnu, and He is the Lord of all living creatures, all worlds, and all beauties, and the protector of everyone. The Lord created this material world to enable the conditioned souls to learn how to perform yajnas (sacrifices) for the satisfaction of Vishnu, so that while in the material world they can live very comfortably without anxiety and after finishing the present material body they can enter into the kingdom of God. That is the whole program for the conditioned soul. By performance of yajna, the conditioned souls gradually become Krishna conscious and become godly in all respects. In the Age of Kali, the sankirtana-yajna (the chanting of the names of God) is recommended by the Vedic scriptures, and this transcendental system was introduced by Lord Caitanya for the deliverance of all men in this age. Sankirtana-yajna and Krishna consciousness go well together. Lord Krishna in His devotional form (as Lord Caitanya) is mentioned in the Srimad-Bhagavatam (11.5.32) as follows, with special reference to the sankirtana-yajna:
"In this Age of Kali, people who are endowed with sufficient intelligence will worship the Lord, who is accompanied by His associates, by performance of sankirtana-yajna." Other yajnas prescribed in the Vedic literatures are not easy to perform in this Age of Kali, but the sankirtana-yajna is easy and sublime for all purposes, as recommended in Bhagavad-gita also (9.14).

ISKCON Toronto, Canada: Snana-Yatra this Sunday! ***NOTE: BATHING WILL TAKE PLACE FROM 4:30PM-6:00PM***
A sure sign that the annual Festival of India (Ratha-Yatra) is just around the corner (July 16-17, 2011) is the annual Jagannatha Snana-Yatra festival! Snana-Yatra, a wonderful festival, wherein Lord Jagannatha, Lord Balarama and Lady Subhadra will be bathed amidst amazing kirtan and chanting!
After the bathing ceremony (Snana-Yatra), Lord Jagannātha apparently becomes sick. He is therefore removed to His private quarters, where no one can see Him. Actually, during this period the body of the Jagannātha Deity is repainted, this is called nava-yauvana.
During the Ratha-Yatra Festival on July 16th, Lord Jagannātha will once again come before the public. Thus for thirteen days after the bathing ceremony, Lord Jagannātha is not visible to any visitors! Don't miss out this last opportunity to see Lord Jagannatha before his grand Ratha-Yatra festival!
***IMPORTANT: This year the bathing ceremony will begin at 4:30 PM and continue to 6:00 PM. Following the bathing, Lord Jagannatha's altar will close at 6:00 PM. Anyone wishing to have a final darshan of Lord Jagannatha, Baladeva and Subhadra must come before 6:00 PM.***

ISKCON Toronto, Canada: Let’s All Wear Blue or Yellow for Lord Jagannatha!
Have you picked out your outfit for Ratha-Yatra (Festival of India) yet? An encouraging call goes out to all devotees to wear blue or yellow for the festival to show your love for Lord Jagannatha!
This year, under the direction of Bhaktimarga Swami, our annual Ratha-Yatra parade will have an exciting twist! In an attempt to showcase our beautiful parade in a more coordinated manner, we are requesting that all devotees wear either BLUE or YELLOW on the day of the parade. On July 16th, we will become ambassadors of our beautiful Hare Krishna culture. Let’s look organized and unified and show the people of Toronto how beautiful this festival truly is.
Wear your love for Lord Jagannatha -- BLUE or YELLOW! Jaya Jagannatha!
Kurma dasa, AU: That's the Way the Apple and Rhubarb Crumbles
As the 'househusband' in this all-male household, I cook daily. Once or twice a week I make something sweet to supplement the stewed and poached fruits that my father likes. My son is not really a dessert person at all, and rarely eats sweets, which is not a bad thing. He certainly doesn't share my dessert genes.
I decided on making a 'crumble' to ward off the outrageously cold weather here in Sydney. Granny Smith apples were peeled, cored and sliced, and steamed with a tiny amount of water. I folded in a jar of home-cooked rhubarb that I had taken out of the freezer, plus some sugar, and a good amount of zested lemon peel for an aromatic lemony zing.
I melted some organic butter, and folded through some oats and some raw sugar. That's the 'crumble' part. I make all sorts of toppings, sometimes the flour, butter and sugar variety which, I guess, is more traditional. Sometimes I make a grain-free topping out of ground almonds, puffed amaranth (kiwicha), butter and raw sugar. That's a wonderful one to serve on Ekadasi fasting days. I have even made dairy-free toppings using a mild olive oil - nice actually.
So that's our crumble all poised to go in the oven, filling a pyrex pie dish pretty much to the brim. There will be bubbly spill-overs (for that rustic crumble look) so I placed the pie dish on a pizza tray to catch the drips.
I was right. In the preheated 190 degree C oven, the filling bubbled and dribbled slightly. I increased the heat to about 200 C and then finished it off under the grill. Then, after the mantras for sanctification were intoned, I dug out one of my Mother's crystal bowls and served a generous portion for no-one in particular (yeh, right Kurma). I drizzled the obligatory vanilla custard, caught in generous mid-pour as hoped, for our 'hero' shot. Not as easy as you think, as anyone that has taken food photography would know.
A true winter-warmer! I can hear those global digestive juices gurgling from here.
Subhavilasa das ACBSP, Toronto, CA: Jaya Gadadhara! Srila Bhaktivinoda Thakur states,"Become a servant of Gaura and Gadadhara"
smara gaura gadadhara kelikalam
bhava gaura gadadhara paksacaram
srnu gaura gadadhara carukatham
bhaja godruma-kanana kunjavidhum
The translation is to remember the wonderful pastimes of Gaura and Gadadhara. Become a servant of Gaura and Gadadhara. Listen to the beautiful narrations concerning Gaura and Gadadhara, and worship Lord Gaura, the beautiful moon of the groves of Godrum.
The following story allows us to follow the instruction to remember the wonderful pastimes and listen to the beautiful narrations concerning Gaura and Gadadhara. It also shows the importance of Sri Gadadhara Pandita...
When the Lord was performing his Navadvipa-lila his chief assistant was Gadadhara. They who in Vrndavana are Radha-Krsna take the form of Gaura-Gadadhara in these pastimes in Navadvipa on the banks of the Ganges. And those who in Vrndavana are gopas and gopis take part in the pastimes of the Lord in Navadvipa by performing kirtana. One day the Lord was wandering by the banks of the Ganges when he came upon a small forest grove and sat down. Gradually he became absorbed in remembering the Vrndavana pastimes. Mukunda Datta began sweetly singing songs in the purva-raga. Gadadhara, after gathering flowers in the forest decorated the Lord's neck with a garland. Just as formerly in Vrndavana, Sri Radha used to decorate Lord Krsna, inthe same way Gadadhara decorated the holy form of Lord Gauranga. Someone sang a sweet song, someone performed a beautiful dance. At length Gauranga sat Gadadhara down on the root of a tree which served as a raised platform. Sri Advaita acarya performed the aratik to the two of them.
Jaya Gadadhara!
Gauranga! Gauranga!

Bharatavarsa.net: Bhakti Vikasa Swami: Joan of Arc in Srimad-Bhagavatam
Woman: Are you familiar with Joan of Arc? She was a saint. Prabhupada: Yes. Woman: Is there any person in the Srimad-Bhagavatam similar to her? Prabhupada: You want to see Joan of Arc in Srimad-Bhagavatam? Why don't you take Joan of Arc of Srimad-Bhagavatam? Any activities of devotees, that is Srimad-Bhagavatam. What do you mean by Bhagavatam? Bhagavatam, Bhagavatam, Bhagav, this word comes from Bhagavan. Bhagavata, Bhagavad-sabda. The word is Bhagavata. And pertaining to Bhagavata is Bhagavata. So Bhagavata can be expanded to any unlimited. So anything in relationship with God, that is Bhagavatam. So if Joan of Arc, she was in relationship with God, she is also Bhagavatam. You should expand Bhagavatam in that way. Yes.

H.H. Devamrita Swami: The Flesh Pt 2
If I truly recognize that my house is ablaze, how quickly should I run out? What do you think? At first, especially on a chilly day, the heat from the fire may feel comfortable. Secondly, as the wood the house is made of continues to burn, the fragrance, like incense, may smell pleasant to the nostrils. Though smoke may start to make my eyes itch, the other sensory experiences may still feel positive. After all, who likes a cold house?
Daring to reject the whole process of material enjoyment can appear quite daunting. To our imperfect and conditioned senses, preliminary aspects of material entanglement can seem pleasing, though bhakti knowledge assures us that we're misperceiving—we're bewildered by the outer layer of an astonishing and devitalizing mirage, ensnaring us with Illusion Phase 1: "Doesn't this look and feel good?"
Our coming to grips with the realities of material enjoyment is not as impossible as we may think. When we actually acquire a significant taste for serving Krishna, nothing else we might do will seem worthy of our effort. Therefore, whether gradually or immediately, let us leave the confines of material indulgences, temporary and insufficient, by stockpiling real riches: service to Krishna.

Ananda Subramanian, Iowa, USA: Practice makes a man perfect
We all have heard the common aphorism “practice makes a man perfect”. The ultimate perfection of life is to constantly practice to meditate on God. We can practice this meditation daily for all activities of life even to apparently mundane chores. For example, we are waiting in line to buy a train ticket, we can meditate on Krishna, or say the same line does not move forward and there is a problem, we may naturally get frustrated but even in that frustration we can meditate on Krishna for support. The idea is that we practice to meditate on Krishna for all things in life – be it good or bad, big or small, fix or no fix, we practice to meditate on Krishna to give us the strength and support to live our daily lives. This practice will keep us humble and relaxed in all circumstances of life knowing well who the ultimate controller is. Ultimately, at the time of death, the same practice will come naturally and we will meditate on Krishna at the final moment of this life.
In order for us to engage in this practice of meditating on Krishna for all things requires a sense of attachment to Him. This attachment comes from faith that Krishna will help us and this faith can be cultivated by chanting His Holy Names. Therefore by regularly chanting we can cultivate faith and attachment which will help us at the time of need.
Chant Hare Krishna!
Hare Krishna

Bharatavarsa.net: Book distribution seminar: The End of a Nice Maha-Sankirtan Day
by Tirtha Pavana dasa (Montreal, Canada)
Bhakta Jeff and I reached downtown Montreal at noon, and by 7:30 we had distributed all our flyers and books except one hardback Bhagavad-gita. Both of us tried for thirty minutes to distribute that book, but no one would take it. We preached to Christians, we preached to Indians -- we tried everyone! I convinced Bhakta Jeff to stay a little longer, but finally at 8:00 pm I surrendered and said, "Okay, let's go." I was quite disappointed as I put the book into my backpack.
But on the way to the train I thought, "No, no, no . . . it's not over yet," and I decided to hold the book in my hands as we walked. When we entered the train, Jeff saw a woman looking at us. So we approached her and started talking to her. She was getting off at the next stop, so we got off with her and continued talking. She was very favorable, but she didn't have any money D but she was with a friend who lent her the money to get the Bhagavad-gita. She could only borrow five dollars, but she told us, "I know this book is really valuable, so I promise I will come to the temple and give a bigger donation." And she did! Her fiance had died just two or three months earlier, so she really appreciated the book and what we said about it.
This was definitely Krishna's arrangement, though we couldn't see that at first. If we hadn't stayed that extra half hour, we would have never met her.

Nrsimhadeva.com: Nrsimha appears from a Shiva-linga
In some occasion arises to offer worship to Shiva, a vaisnava offers worship to Vishnu or Krishna in the murti of Shiva, because there is no difference between them, “priyasya sakhyuh”. One example of this is found in the Visnu-dharmottara.There was a very dear, parama bhagavata devotee of Vishnu names Viswaksena. He was traveling throughout the world. Once, feeling tired, he sat down in a forest. There was a village close by. The son of the village chief happened to come by. Seeing the brahmana Viswaksena, he said, “I am the son of the village chief. I have a very bad headache today so I cannot offer worship to my ista, Shivaji. So I request you, please offer worship to Shivaji today on my behalf.”
Viswaksena said, “I am a Vishnu-bhakta, I am a dear devotee of Vishnu. I offer worship to Krishna and His forms such as Vishnu, Vasudeva, Sankarshana, Pradyumna and Aniruddha. I never offer worship to demigods. I never offer worship to anyone else. You may go elsewhere.”
The son of the village chief became angry and drew his sword, “if you do not obey me, if you do not worship my ista, Shiva, on my behalf, then I will cut off your head.”
In order to save himself from death, Viswaksena said, “Yes, yes. I will worship. I will worship.” He thought to himself that Shiva is Rudradev, the incarnation of ignorance, tamo-guna. As Srila Prabhupada writes in the purport to Srimad Bhagavatam 9.9.7:
The material world exists predominately in the mode of ignorance. Therefore Lord Shiva is compared here to the longitude and latitude of the entire universe, which resembles a cloth woven of threads extending for both its length and breadth.
Rudra is the incarnation of tamo-guna and Nrisinghadev is the killer of the demons, in whom tamo-guna is predominating. So Viswaksena thought, “I must worship Nrisinghadev in the Shiva murti to kill this person’s tamo-guna.” So uttering the mantra “sri nrsimhaya namah” – “I offer my obeisances to Lord Nrsimhadeva” – he offered flower to the Shiva deity. When the son of the village chief heard him chant the mantra he got angry and drew out his sword to cut off his head, “What are you doing? You are uttering Nrisingha mantra? You are not worshiping my ista, Shiva!” When that person drew his sword to cut off Viswaksena’s head, immediately Nrisinghadev appeared from the Shiva murti and cut off the head of that person and all of his family members. All were finished.
So where is the difference between Shiva and Vishnu? This shiva-linga that Nrisingha came out of is still there in South India. It is known as linga-sphota. You may go and see it.

This is today’s summary of Prabhupa’s lecture I listened to.
SB 5.6.11 : 29 Dec 1976 : Mumbai
Low-class people, due to their gross ignorance, introduce a system of religion that deviates from the Vedic principles. Following their own mental concoctions, they automatically fall down into the darkest regions of existence.
System of religion can be given by God only. But people do not understand who is God and why He gives us religion. Almost all of the people are so much in the modes of ignorance that the whole world is in an awkward & dangerous position. The only hope is to go through the path recommended by Shastras. But people are so engrossed in their material desires that they do not have interest in any spiritual activity. We are in a situation now where we have to elevate the human civilization from the level of hogs.
One’s aim of life should not be to get a comfortable life for a few years and forget the real business of Self-realization. Such people, caught up in their own mental concoction, fall into the darkest regions of ignorance. We can see that even though there is great disturbance and discomfort, people still prefer to live in the city. When we offer them a much more comfortable living through Krishna Consciousness, they will not come with us. Hence, such people fall from their spiritual identification to their material identification.
Be careful with your life and take to Krishna Consciousness. In this age, people are strongly in the modes of passion and ignorance. The Lord is Vaikunta-Pati and He has no business to come here. In His place, there is no suffering, everything is eternal, a place of full enjoyment and no enmity. It is above the 3 modes of material nature. Whereas our world is full of anxiety, there is no enjoyment and no peace.
We ask all people to leave aside their designation and join our Krishna Consciousness movement. We may have some inconvenience while executing this mission. But since this hardship is for Krishna, we accept this type of hardship. Our job is to give people information about Vaikunta, a place with no anxiety. This is real welfare work.
Devadeva Mirel, Alachua, USA: Free Fun : Printable Jar Labels
T’is the season to be canning and I know you are constantly on the search for new ways to label those jam jars! A few weeks earlier I posted an edited source list of really adorable free downloads to label your canning jars. Shortly after that I shared with you my super simple but way cute white paint marker on glass technique. And that post has been like *way* popular.
I haven’t seen too many new and cute labels floating around the web this year. And why is it that so canning label templates look like they were made from Mennonite girls’ fabric scraps? I thought canning was hip and modern!
As a little nudge to get you in canning gear, I put together 12 label templates. You can print them on a full sheet of label paper or on cardstock to use as hanging tags. Just be sure to have a 2″ paper punch on hand to keep it neat.
It’s a mixed lot of a dozen: 4 fruit labels (cherry, strawberry, peach + blueberry), generic jam labels and decorations for all your canning sundries. Even if you don’t can, you may want to print them out anyway and stick them all over yourself and do your best impersonation a 3 year old leaving the doctor’s office.
Oh, and did I mention that August 13 is the Can It Forward nationwide event? To encourage everyone to check out canning, I am going to demystify it all on this blog. And we’re even going to have some canning related givaways. Oooh fun!
In the meantime, here are those labels I’ve been blabbing about.
Would love to hear from you in the comments section to find out what’s in season in your neck of the woods and what you are planning to can.

*Note: Because my 2″ punch is in the shop, I enlarged the labels and used a 2.5″ punch. Looks a little too big when on the side of a jar but the 2″ will be mahvalous!
Japa Group: Present In His Holy Names
There are two conceptions: the physical conception and the vibration conception. So physical conception is temporary. The vibration conception is eternal. Just like we are... relishing the vibration of Krishna’s teachings. So by vibration He is present. As soon as we chant Hare Krishna or chant Bhagavad-gita or Srimad Bhagavatam, He is present immediately by His vibration. He’s absolute.

Devadeva Mirel, Alachua, USA: Canning : Vintage Mason Jars on Craigslist!
Last month I posted a want ad for canning jars on Craigslist. Then I checked the household goods offers. Behold! Someone in Gainesville was getting rid of a box of old jars for $2. I arranged to meet this mystery seller in the parking lot of Starbucks. And guess what? She found two more boxes that morning. Still, she was only charging $2. Cool people do exist in this world. Just 2 bucks and she totally knew she was giving me beautiful vintage jars along with recycled mayonnaise quarts and standard Ball jars. Want to have a look at my beautiful inanimate objects of my affection?
When I lived in PA, there was a Mennonite thrift shop called Abundant Blessings in Mifflintown. I remember them having blue mason jars for $3 a pop. They had so many, I never felt the urgency to buy. Down here (and on Ebay) they are between $9 and $15 when sold with the zinc tops. Yup, same set-up that was going for 3 bucks in rural PA. I missed the glass boat on that one.
I do have an old shelf that I need to paint and stick upstairs to accommodate my collection overflow–canning included. But really, it’s nothing compared to this amazing collection of colored Ball jars. Swoon.
Yoga of Ecology, Bhakta Chris, USA: Across Europe, Irking Drivers Is Public Policy
ZURICH — While American cities are synchronizing green lights to improve traffic flow and offering apps to help drivers find parking, many European cities are doing the opposite: creating environments openly hostile to cars. The methods vary, but the mission is clear — to make car use expensive and just plain miserable enough to tilt drivers toward more environmentally friendly modes of transportation.

Cities including Vienna to Munich and Copenhagen have closed vast swaths of streets to car traffic. Barcelona and Paris have had car lanes eroded by popular bike-sharing programs. Drivers in London and Stockholm pay hefty congestion charges just for entering the heart of the city. And over the past two years, dozens of German cities have joined a national network of “environmental zones” where only cars with low carbon dioxide emissions may enter.
Likeminded cities welcome new shopping malls and apartment buildings but severely restrict the allowable number of parking spaces. On-street parking is vanishing. In recent years, even former car capitals like Munich have evolved into “walkers’ paradises,” said Lee Schipper, a senior research engineer at Stanford University who specializes in sustainable transportation.
“In the United States, there has been much more of a tendency to adapt cities to accommodate driving,” said Peder Jensen, head of the Energy and Transport Group at the European Environment Agency. “Here there has been more movement to make cities more livable for people, to get cities relatively free of cars.”
To that end, the municipal Traffic Planning Department here in Zurich has been working overtime in recent years to torment drivers. Closely spaced red lights have been added on roads into town, causing delays and angst for commuters. Pedestrian underpasses that once allowed traffic to flow freely across major intersections have been removed. Operators in the city’s ever expanding tram system can turn traffic lights in their favor as they approach, forcing cars to halt.
Around Löwenplatz, one of Zurich’s busiest squares, cars are now banned on many blocks. Where permitted, their speed is limited to a snail’s pace so that crosswalks and crossing signs can be removed entirely, giving people on foot the right to cross anywhere they like at any time.
As he stood watching a few cars inch through a mass of bicycles and pedestrians, the city’s chief traffic planner, Andy Fellmann, smiled. “Driving is a stop-and-go experience,” he said. “That’s what we like! Our goal is to reconquer public space for pedestrians, not to make it easy for drivers.”
Vraja Kishor, JP: Teddy Bears and Bhakti Yoga
The undeniable appeal of hugging a teddy bear or other cute and cuddly stuffed animal is significant evidence to prove the fundamental premise that the supreme spiritual bliss is available only in Bhakti-yoga. Why? Because it demonstrates quite plainly that it is even more enjoyable to give love than to receive it. Even the opportunity to love something that can’t return your feelings at all is quite pleasant and attractive.
