H.G. Sankarshan das Adhikari, USA: Monday 25 April 2011--Dogs' Rights Activists are Neglecting Cows--and--Can I Desire to Relish Krishna's Name?

A daily broadcast of the Ultimate Self Realization Course(TM) Monday 25 April 2011 The Supreme Personality of Godhead, Lord Sri Krishna, and His eternal consort, Srimati Radharani are enjoying transcendental pastimes in the topmost planet of the spiritual world, Sri Goloka Vrindavan. They are beckoning us to rejoin them. (Click on photo to see a larger image.) Our Mission: To help everyone awaken their original Krishna consciousness, which is eternal, full of knowledge and full of bliss. Such a global awakening will, in one stroke, solve all the problems of the world society bringing in a new era of unprecedented peace and prosperity for all. May that day, which the world so desperately needs, come very soon. We request you to participate in this mission by reviving your dormant Krishna consciousness and assisting us in spreading this science all over the world. Dedicated with love to ISKCON Founder-Acharya: His Divine Grace A.C. Bhaktivedanta Swami Prabhupada, our beloved spiritual master, and to you, our dear readers. Today's Thought: Dogs' Rights Activists are Neglecting Cows Uploaded from Kaliningrad, Russia In China animals' rights activists are vigorously campaigning to convince the Chinese people to stop eating dogs. While we appreciate their endeavors to save the dogs we wonder why they are not campaigning to save the cows also. Why should only dog eating be stopped and not cow eating? Just see how valuable the cow is. She eats grass, which we cannot digest, and transforms it into the most wonderful tasty miracle food, milk. We enjoy milk in so many varieties of ways, taking it straight or as yogurt or ice cream. How can we be so cruel to enjoy the milk of the cow and then slaughter and eat her flesh when her milk bag dries up? How barbaric we are! It's time we learn how to become civilized. Sankarshan Das Adhikari Cow at ISKCON Temple--Alachua, Florida http://www.backtohome.com/images/alachua_cow.jpg Answers According to the Vedic Version: Question: Can I Desire to Relish Krishna's Name? Dear Gurudeva, Please accept my obeisances. All glories to Srila Prabhupada. I have some questions. You said in a lecture: This is an easy way to get taste. Don't try to get taste. No, try to chant so that Krishna can hear your chanting. Try to chant so Krishna will relish your chanting. But, at the same time, there are these great devotees like Srila Narottama dasa Thakura, who are longing for the taste for the holy name. And why are they writing in that way because according to the songs it seems they have the taste already? More questions: From where comes desire to do devotional service and chant the holy name? What is needed to get that desire and to keep that desire: devotees' or spiritual master's blessings or personal effort or something else? There are many different things described in the Srimad Bhagavatam. For example the structure of the universe, how the human-population was created, etc. Why do we need to know these things about the material world? Your servant, K.D. Answer: Learn the Art of How to Relish It. We must long for nama-ruci, taste for chanting Sri Krishna's beautiful name. But at the same time, we should know the secret of how to get nama-ruci. The secret is that we must chant in such a loving way that Krishna is very satisfied by our chanting. This is the method of how we become satisfied. We cannot be satisfied independently because Krishna is the prime enjoyer and we are the secondary enjoyers. We become pleased only when He is pleased. So we should always chant in such a way that He is pleased. In this way we will relish unlimitedly the chanting of His name. The pure devotees write as if they have no taste for chanting Krishna's name in order to teach us what our mood should be so we can develop a taste for Krishna's name. Just as we naturally desire to eat, deep within every jiva soul is the desire to have a loving relationship with God. And just as the clouds cover the sunshine, sometimes the cloud of material desires cover our natural tendency to love God. But if we are fortunate to come into contact with someone who is fully absorbed in love of God, by that contact we are stimulated to revive our original divine nature. And if we can maintain that contact by accepting diksha or spiritual initiation from that pure lover of God and then always obeying his instructions, we can gradually become completely liberated from the clouds of maya and be fully and permanently re-established in our constitutional glory as pure lovers of God. The scientists are working hard to try accurately trace out the origin of the human race and the structure of the universe because people are very eager to know about these things. Sukadeva Goswami has very mercifully included these topics in the Srimad Bhagavatam to attract the people in general to read the Bhagavatam. In this way at the same time that they get their desire for this knowledge satisfied they will also learn how to get out of this material world by surrendering at the lotus feet of Lord Sri Krishna. Subhavilasa das ACBSP, Toronto, CA: O' Gopinatha, the worshipful deity of Sri Abhiram Thakur

Picture
Today's post is a bit late since we were at ISKCON Brampton today. It was wonderful to see a full house with so many new faces and of course it was a pleasure to get the association of many familiar faces as well.

At ISKCON Brampton we had the darshan of Sri Radha Damodar and as the day goes on we are brought back to Gopinatha, the name of Krishna at ISKCON Toronto. The context for remembering Gopinatha is different since it comes from honouring Sri Abhiram Thakur, as it is his disappearance day. Sri Abhiram Thakur was a great Vaishnava saint that pushed on the sankirtan movement and he worshipped none other than Gopinatha.

In reading about Sri Abhiram Thakur, there are many accounts and stories. However instead of sorting and speculating we can simply turn to Srila Prabhupada. In Srila Prabhupada's purport to Chaitanya Caritamrta Adi-lila 11.13 it states:

Śrī Rāmadāsa, later known as AbhirāmaThākura, was one of the twelve gopālas, or cowherd boyfriends, of ŚrīNityānandaPrabhu. The Gaura-ganoddeśa-dīpikā (126) states that ŚrīRāmadāsa was formerly Śrīdāmā. In the Bhakti-ratnākara (Fourth Wave), there is a description of ŚrīlaAbhirāmaThākura. By the order of ŚrīNityānandaPrabhu, AbhirāmaThākura became a great ācārya and preacher of the Caitanya cult of devotional service. He was a very influential personality, and nondevotees were very much afraid of him. Empowered by ŚrīNityānandaPrabhu, he was always in ecstasy and was extremely kind to all fallen souls. It is said that if he offered obeisances to any stone other than a śālagrāma-śilā, it would immediately fracture.

Śrīla Bhaktisiddhānta SarasvatīThākura writes in his Anubhāsya, "Ten miles southwest of the Cāńpādāńgā railway station on the narrow-gauge railway line from Howrah, in Calcutta, to Āmtā, a village in the Hugli district, is a small town named Khānākūla-krsnanagara, where the temple in which AbhirāmaThākura worshiped is situated. During the rainy season, when this area is inundated with water, people must go there by another line, which is now called the southeastern railway. On this line there is a station named Kolāghāta, from which one has to go by steamer to Rānīcaka. Seven and a half miles north of Rānīcaka is Khānākūla. The temple where AbhirāmaThākura worshiped is situated in Krsnanagara, which is near the kūla (bank) of the Khānā (Dvārakeśvara River); therefore this place is celebrated as Khānākūla-krsnanagara. Outside of the temple is a bakula tree. This place is known as Siddha-bakula-kuñja. It is said that when AbhirāmaThākura came there, he sat down under this tree. In Khānākūla-krsnanagara there is a big fair held every year in the month of Caitra [March-April] on the Krsna-saptamī, the seventh day of the dark moon. Many hundreds and thousands of people gather for this festival. The temple where AbhirāmaThākura worshiped has a very old history. The Deity in the temple is known as Gopīnātha. There are many sevaita families living near the temple. It is said that AbhirāmaThākura had a whip and that whoever he touched with it would immediately become an elevated devotee of Krsna. Among his many disciples, ŚrīmānŚrīnivāsaĀcārya was the most famous and the most dear, but it is doubtful that he was his initiated disciple."

This is our humble attempt to honour this day and share Srila Prabhupada's words on this great Vaishnava Sain

Jaya Sri Gopinatha!
Sri Abhiram Thakur ki Jaya!
All glories to Srila Prabhupada!

Akrura das, Gita Coaching: CREATE BREAKTHROUGHS WITH Q-STORMING

This description of Q-Storming® is one of the Question Thinking Tools in Marilee Adams’ book, Change Your Questions, Change Your Life: 10 Powerful Tools for Life and Work. (The book also has a whole chapter on Q-Storming.)

Q-Storming is akin to brainstorming. However, it is often more powerful than generative. Rather than seeking new answers and solutions, the goal of Q-Storming practice is to generate as many new questions as possible. This is because one can only get the best answers and solutions by asking the best questions first.

Typically, questions open thinking, while answers often close down thinking. Q-Storming empowers collaborative, creative and strategic thinking. It is a tool for moving beyond limitations in perception and thinking and advancing to novel and extraordinary solutions and answers. It is most often used when breakthroughs are sought in decision making, problem solving, strategic planning, and innovation.

Q-Storming is based on three premises: 1) Great results begin with great questions, 2) Most any problem can be solved with enough of the right questions, and 3) The questions we ask ourselves often provide the most fruitful openings for new thinking and possibilities.

Q-Storming is typically done with a group or team, especially when exploring ideas and possibilities. It is also used in goal-oriented conversations between two people, for example, in coaching, leadership, management, or sales. Q-Storming can be done in person or virtually, with a global team or a coaching client in a different geographic location.

The facilitator focuses on developing a robust goal and eliciting assumptions about it prior to the question generation phase of Q-Storming. Typically, action plans will then be made or revised based on discoveries made during the Q-Storming session.

Question Guidelines

Questions should be first-person singular or plural, using “I” and “we.” You want new questions to think with, not necessarily to ask someone else.

Generate questions from Learner mindset and avoid Judger.

Questions are mostly open-ended, not closed (“How can I?” rather than “Can I? and “How can we?” rather than “Can you?”)

Invite courageous and provocative, as well as “silly” and “dumb” questions.

H.H. Satsvarupa das Goswami (Ret.): 290—Poem for April 24

www.sdgonline.org. SDGonline Daily updates

Hare Krishnas I got ahead
of the pack like a sports car
with wind rushing against
the windshield, but it could
have been better more attention
to the meaning. I don’t begrudge,
but I am grateful I finished the
quota counting before 4:00 A.M.

You are dressed in your sannyasa
clothes and tilaka awaiting a
10:00 A.M. meeting with Radhanatha
Swami, he is coming
especially to talk with you.
He is friendly and approachable.
I hope it will go all right. I’ll
tell him I am writing and inquire
into his book tour and lecturing.
Expect his open kindness.

Gradually we make our way through
the chapter of  teachings to Rupa
Goswami. I can’t retain it well
what comes each day but like
it. He’s up to reaching the
results of the maturation of
the bhakti-lata in Goloka.
You read and aspire
to become his follower.

Today Baladeva is cooking
a brunch of pancakes for
all the devotees at Saci-
Suta’s while I talk over
here with our swami.
It’s a busy day, I will
try to fit in an autobiog.
piece if I can get
into the mood and receive
the mercy.

The weather continues
cool and rainy April
showers.  I walk short
of breath and with a
limping left ankle.
Grateful I can get out
there for a daily amble.

The morning japa is the
key foundation. Your
light is on first in
the neighborhood, and you work
on your rounds
earnestly but with
a flaw. The days
go by quickly like
signposts, and I don’t
travel. I stay fixed
in this house and perform
sadhana and talk to
the men and try to
execute my writing.
Krishna oversees
my activities personally
and approves my
quiet life although
He may wish I did
more. I offer Him
what I can
offer the incense
to Their forms
in a childlike
meditation. Please
be satisfied with me.

That is our motto. Krishna is sun. Remember? Krsna surya sama. So when Krsna sun is there, all those glow-worms (impersonalists) will be finished. Keep this sun always shining. Then these glow-worms will be finished.

H.H. Prahladananda Swami: Lecture – SB 8.23.11-14 The Only Business Of A Devotee Is To Satisfy Krishna

H.H. Prahladananda Swami: Lecture – SB 8.23.11-14 The Only Business Of A Devotee Is To Satisfy Krishna

SB 08.23.11-14 The Only Business Of A Devotee Is To Satisfy Krsna 1995-11-17
Lecture – Srimad Bhagavatam 8.23.11-14 The Only Business Of A Devotee Is To Satisfy Krsna 1995-11-17 Radhadesh

SB 8.23.11-12: Śrīla Śukadeva Gosvāmī said: Accompanied by Bali Mahārāja, my dear King Parīkṣit, Prahlāda Mahārāja, the master of all the chiefs of the demons, took the Supreme Lord's order on his head with folded hands. After saying yes to the Lord, circumambulating Him and offering Him respectful obeisances, he entered the lower planetary system known as Sutala.

SB 8.23.13: Hari, the Supreme Personality of Godhead, Nārāyaṇa, thereafter addressed Śukrācārya, who was sitting nearby in the midst of the assembly with the priests [brahma, hotā, udgātā and adhvaryu]. O Mahārāja Parīkṣit, these priests were all brahma-vādīs, followers of the Vedic principles for performing sacrifices.

SB 8.23.14: O best of the brāhmaṇas, Śukrācārya, please describe the fault or discrepancy in your disciple Bali Mahārāja, who engaged in performing sacrifices. This fault will be nullified when judged in the presence of qualified brāhmaṇas.

Toronto Sankirtan Team, CA: Vaishnavanam yatha shambhu

I met a guy at Kensignton and he said he was a yoga teacher. He seemed like he would say he knew everything but Krishna had a plan. As I showed him the Bhagavad gita he appreciated it but said that they read about it in their Shivananda school. I had little hope but I casually asked his name and he said 'Shambu'. My response was ah Vaishnavanam Yatha Shambu. Suddenly I had his attention and he started to ask me what that meant. I translated it for him and explained how Shambu was the topmost of Vaishnavas. So then he asked me what is Vaishnava and we started to discuss that. I handed him an Isopanshad and told him this will enhance his study of Bhagavad gita. He asked me if the Iso had all details about that mantra and I said yes ! I also explained that Shambu is another name for Siva which means auspicious. He left smiling with the Iso - all glories to Lord Siva. This movement is so glorious that all demigods help with it.

Lecture – Srimad Bhagavatam 8.23.3-8 Lord Krsna Is Not Partial To Anyone 1995-11-15 Radhadesh

SB 8.23.3: Śukadeva Gosvāmī continued: After speaking in this way, Bali Mahārāja offered his obeisances first to the Supreme Personality of Godhead, Hari, and then to Lord Brahmā and Lord Śiva. Thus he was released from the bondage of the nāga-pāśa [the ropes of Varuṇa], and in full satisfaction he entered the planet known as Sutala.

SB 8.23.4: Thus having delivered the proprietorship of the heavenly planets to Indra and having fulfilled the desire of Aditi, mother of the demigods, the Supreme Personality of Godhead ruled the affairs of the universe.

SB 8.23.5: When Prahlāda Mahārāja heard how Bali Mahārāja, his grandson and descendant, had been released from bondage and had achieved the benediction of the Lord, he spoke as follows in a tone of greatly ecstatic devotion.

SB 8.23.6: Prahlāda Mahārāja said: O Supreme Personality of Godhead, You are universally worshiped; even Lord Brahmā and Lord Śiva worship Your lotus feet. Yet although You are such a great personality, You have kindly promised to protect us, the demons. I think that such kindness has never been achieved even by Lord Brahmā, Lord Śiva or the goddess of fortune, Lakṣmī, what to speak of other demigods or common people.

SB 8.23.7: O supreme shelter of everyone, great personalities like Brahmā enjoy their perfection simply by tasting the honey of rendering service at Your lotus feet. But as for us, who are all rogues and debauchees born of an envious family of demons, how have we received Your mercy? It has been possible only because Your mercy is causeless.

SB 8.23.8: O my Lord, Your pastimes are all wonderfully performed by Your inconceivable spiritual energy; and by her perverted reflection, the material energy, You have created all the universes. As the Supersoul of all living entities, You are aware of everything, and therefore You are certainly equal toward everyone. Nonetheless, You favor Your devotees. This is not partiality, however, for Your characteristic is just like that of a desire tree, which yields everything according to one's desire.

No obstante, favoreces a Tus devotos. Pero no se trata de favoritismo, pues Te caracterizas por ser como un árbol de deseos, que da de todo conforme a las aspiraciones de la persona.

Toronto Sankirtan Team, CA: Every minute is an opportunity

The other day we were looking for a place to rent and walked into a parlour. This was cutting right into my sankirtan time and I was praying for a miracle. That’s when the owner of the parlour walked in and started to speak with us. She started to ask us about what we do and that was the way in. One thing led to another and she mentioned she chanted the Aum. So told her to add another small mantra to her repository ‘Gauranga’ and there she was chanting Gauranga repeatedly. She started to talk about mantras and how she likes it and the next thing you know she had a Bhagavad in her hand. Rishi prabhu taught her the Hare Krishna mantra and was asking us several questions. She was very appreciative and gave a donation for the book. It was a lesson that every minute is an opportunity for Sankirtan – like Vaisesika Prabhu said, always keep a book with you.

New Vrndavan, USA: Movie Night & Raw Food Potluck

Hare Krsna! New Vrindaban’s Center for Preventative Medicine proudly hosts a Raw Food Potluck & an inspiring documentary about how diet can reverse “incurable” diseases!

Wednesday, April 27 @ 5:30 pm at the Small Farm Training Center Guest House

Here’s a blurb about the film:

Simply Raw: Reversing Diabetes in 30 Days is an independent documentary film that chronicles six Americans with diabetes who switch to a diet consisting entirely of vegan, organic, uncooked food in order to reverse disease without pharmaceutical medication.

The six are challenged to give up meat, dairy, sugar, alcohol, nicotine, caffeine, soda, junk food, fast food, processed food, packaged food, and even cooked food for 30 days. The film follows each participant’s remarkable journey and captures the medical, physical, and emotional transformations brought on by this radical diet and lifestyle change. We witness moments of struggle, support, and hope as what is revealed, with startling clarity, is that diet can reverse disease and change lives.

The film highlights each of the six before they begin the program and we first meet them in their home environment with their families. Each participant speaks candidly about their struggle to manage their diabetes and how it has affected every aspect of their life, from work to home to their relationships.

And a trailer of the film itself!

H.H. Satsvarupa das Goswami (Ret.): OLD FRIENDS

www.sdgonline.org. SDGonline Daily updates

From My Dear Lord Krishna: A Book of Prayers (Volume I)

“I just wrote a memoir in which I recalled the time Prabhupada sat up in bed and said, ‘I do not know Krishna. I only know my Guru Maharaja.’ I do not know how to take that statement. It was certainly very humble. Prabhupada indicated that he had undertaken his whole preaching mission under the order of his spiritual master and with full faith in his spiritual master, Srila Bhaktisiddhanta Sarasvati Gosvami Prabhupada. He wrote in the concluding words of Caitanya-caritamrta that he felt his spiritual master was always with him, watching him and guiding him. But Prabhupada made other remarks indicating that he knew You. He wrote in a letter to Tamala Krishna, ‘There was never a time when I forgot Krishna.’  He also said that after the disappearance of his spiritual master, the Gaudiya Math broke up and some Godbrothers won certain temples. Prabhupada said that because he went out and preached, he received the direct mercy (empowerment) of Lord Caitanya. So he could be humble and say that he did not know Krishna, but he could also be bold and say that he knew You.  Certainly his Bhaktivedanta purports demonstrate that he was a great transcendental scholar like the previous acaryas in line from Caitanya Mahaprabhu and that he knew Krishna very well. Because he realized Krishna and Krishna consciousness, he was able to effectively convince others to become devotees of Krishna.

“In all honesty, I can say that I do not know You and that I only knew my Guru Maharaja. And yet I wrote to You daily. I do so with the permission and blessings of Srila Prabhupada. He told us all to write about Krishna, and Lord Caitanya said, ‘Tell everyone you meet about Krishna.’ So how could we tell people about Krishna unless we know something about Him?

“I do know You because I have faith in the accounts I have read about You. I know You killed the Aghasura demon and that You stole butter from the houses of the elderly gopis of Vraja. I can tell people about this with confidence because I believe it. I know You through hearing, through the proof of sabda brahman.

“There is certainly a large sense in which I do not know You. I have never received Your saksad darsana (direct vision of You). You have not spoken to me except through Your words in scriptures. You have not told me the nature of my eternal relationship with You and when I will join with You in the spiritual world. Nor have You told me that You are displeased with me and that I will have to return to the material world for many, many births. I do not know these things because my relationship with You is not that intimate. And so in a sense it is true that I do not know You, I only know my Guru Maharaja. I definitely know Srila Prabhupada, although he too remains a mystery to me. When I would look into his eyes, he was unfathomable to me. But I spoke with him on many occasions and used to sleep only a few feet away from him when I was his servant. I listened personally to many of his lectures and went on morning walks with him. I massaged him many times. He smiled at me and frowned at me. I believe that he still exists in the spiritual world and that he has memory of me. I believe that at the time of death when I remember him, there will be some connection. He will somehow be involved in how I am transferred to the next world. So knowing Prabhupada is as good as knowing You, Krishna.

“And yet I wrote to You. Prabhupada wants me to know You. Once a devotee asked Srila Prabhupada what he wanted from us. He said, ‘That you love Krishna.’ It is not wrong that I approach You directly. That is my spiritual master’s desire. I approach You through my guru, and yet I approach You. I pray that I not become presumptuous in my prayers to You, and that they always be done under the sanction of Srila Prabhupada.”

From The Twenty-six Qualities of a Devotee

Akincana

“Surrender of material possessions should be done in the awareness that one is giving up a burden, freeing himself from an entanglement.  Material wealth creates an illusion. We put our faith in the power of our bank account. We depend on our country, our family, our friends. We love our material possessions. And in doing so, we cannot feel that Krishna is our only shelter. Utter dependence on Krishna includes becoming akincana, materially exhausted. Queen Kunti therefore addresses Lord Krishna as akincana-gocara. Krishna can be achieved by a person who does not put faith in material possessions.

“It is for our ultimate good that Krishna and Krishna’s representative tell us to surrender our material possessions. To think that certain riches belong to us is maya, illusion. At the time of death, we will have to give up all our possessions; but the kama, the material desiring by which we possess our wealth, will drive us on to another body where we will again try to become happy by material possessions and where we will again suffer the pangs of birth, death, disease and old age. So as the transcendentalist must learn, ‘I am not this body, I am spirit soul,’ he must also learn, ‘the possessions I have accumulated are not mine.’ Srila Prabhupada explains how material possessions can ‘intoxicate’ a person to the point of making him unable to properly chant the holy names of Krishna.

“Srila Prabhupada has described how elderly men in India renounce family and home and go to Vrndavana to spend their last days chanting Hare Krishna, yet they try to keep their wealth. They stay in Vrndavana and chant on their beads as long as they are sure that their money remains in the bank or goes to their family members. But Krishna, being all-intelligent, sees that the man is still not surrendering. Of course, he has come to live as a babaji in Vrndavana and call out Krishna’s names, and that is good; but Krishna also wants him to surrender his money.

“The materialist cannot understand the simple fact that his dependence on wealth is maya. He does not understand how it is pulling him down into the ocean of birth and death. Having placed his love, faith and dependence in his wealth, until he offers that wealth at the lotus feet of Krishna, he cannot truly live in Vrndavana and chant the holy names. Thus foolish persons cling to their few material possessions and give up the real wealth, love of God.”

From Prabhupada Meditations, Volume II

“Prabhupada called me in and reprimanded me in the presence of his guest. Later I went into Prabhupada and said, ‘Prabhupada, this service is bewildering to me. Some of the devotees are criticizing me for letting too many people in. I don’t know what to do.’ I was almost crying. Srila Prabhupada said, ‘Everything is all right.’ So my Prabhupada assures me. Once he wrote me in a note, ‘May Krishna save you from calamities.’

“I seek his attention, and yet I don’t want to become puffed up. I don’t expect him to think of me as a great devotee. That would not do me any good; it would be unreasonable. And yet I do want assurances.

Prabhupada Smaranam

“Prabhupada,
this white priest
this saffron-dressed guy
who goes to read your books
but falls asleep,
his head on a desk,
he wants to remember you
‘now and at the hour of my death, Amen.’

“Prabhupada, I am your boy.
But still very incomplete.
It is a fact that I’ve changed
because of you. Would I be
in Eastern Europe preaching—
if I hadn’t met you?

“Yet the lack of fire,
stumbling steps,
the Western-style confessions–
that’s not from you, is it?
(Though I’m in Prague on your mission,
I wouldn’t mind going to find
Franz Kafka’s house,
but no one here has heard of him!)

“I say, ‘Please take me.’
I open your book,
the scripture is
Upanisad,
but in two minutes my head is on the desk,
encircled by bees and flies and the
blood rushes there so when I
lift my head I am dazed and
nowhere closer to you
and the omnipotent Lord.
Where does this come from?
You never taught us,
‘conk out’ when you go to read.

“They say
you are strong and a chastiser of demons.
And you want everyone to distribute your books.
And everyone must surrender to the GBC.
And they say you said Christians
can never attain love of God
and women are less intelligent.
But to understand you actually,
isn’t so easy.

“You are beyond us
although we quote you.
And you are kindly with each one of us.

“What is it like to be with you?
I have my version too.
I went to massage you one day in France,
and you said the body has foul odors.
You said I could leave you
and preach in America.

“Let the memories pass over me as waves.
I don’t have to explain them.
Your hand is out to me, you lift me up.

“Every morning, every day
I’ll speak your message.
‘Just follow Prabhupada, and I’ll tell you how.’
From The Wild Garden—Collected Writings 1990-1993

“Traffic jams occur in the town of Vrndavana. I’m trying to see them in a more relaxed way from the seat of my rickshaw. Today our rickshaw stopped because an unmanned motor-rickshaw blocked half the road. The other half of the road was blocked by a large oxcart. Workers were unloading big stone slabs from the cart. A car approached from the other direction, but he couldn’t get through either. Then from our direction came a dozen pack mules. They hesitated, afraid to go between the long-horned bullock and the motor-rickshaw. By the time the motor-rickshaw driver arrived, there was a traffic jam. Horns honked, bells rang and the drivers were angry. All we needed to complete this scene were a few camels or elephants, and maybe a motorcycle. Gradually, by moving aside, backing up, gesticulating wildly and yelling back and forth, along with bystanders contributing their advice—the jam dissolved and we continued on our way. Not your average bumper-to-bumper grind-to-a-halt you meet in the West.

I discussed attraction to Krishna’s Vrndavana pastimes with my Godbrother inside Srila Prabhupada’s kitchen at Radha-Damodara temple. Prabhupada, like Lord Krishna, is sarva-jna, all-knowing, and he guides us now, even after his disappearance. We were bereft of spiritual life before Prabhupada came to the West. Krishna knew this and sent us Srila Prabhupada. Now Prabhupada continues to know our needs. He will instruct us what to do further. Let us pray to him and consult his books. What next, Srila Prabhupada?

“I just heard you speaking the Krishna book on the section where Vasudeva preaches to Kamsa. He said just as one walks on the street by putting one foot down securely and following it with the next, so we move securely from one life to the next as ordained by Providence. And just as the caterpillar moves from his stem to the leaf, we will know how a sure passage—from this life to the next—from vaidhi-bhakti to spontaneous love. We want to know what we should do, what is the required work.

I am also consulting our friend, the Supersoul. Please tell me what to do, inner guide and guru. What is best for a particular follower of Prabhupada? The seas are not always clearly charted for each individual. Even though the seas have been traversed thousands of times, every voyage is unique.

Emerging from the Radha-Damodara temple, I looked for my Birki shoes. Suddenly, one shoe came flying through the air and landed nearby. A cleaning lady with an unfocused eye who was gathering sticks into bundles had thrown my shoe. But where was the other? We can assume the monkeys had stolen it. A temple authority came along and calmly suggested I come back in a day or two to see if it turns up. Okay.

“Out onto the street,  a rickshaw driver is sound asleep, his body curled in an awkward position on the rickshaw seat. Madhu and I don’t have to talk about our visit to Prabhupada’s rooms. Better we chant our japa. We silently observe the fantastic panorama of human and divine consciousness all the way from the bazaars to Ramana Reti and our ISKCON temple. There is that graffiti again that spells ‘Radha.’  Krishna is in every temple. ‘Jaya Radhe. Hare Krishna. Haribol.’

“Back in the guesthouse, I follow Caitanya-caritamrta at random and found this verse:

‘All the inhabitants of Vrndavana are Vaisnavas … Even though some of them do not strictly follow the rules and regulations of devotional service, on the whole they are devotees of Krishna and chant His name directly or indirectly.  Purposely or without purpose, even when they pass on the street they are fortunate enough to exchange greetings by saying the name of Radha or Krishna. Thus directly or indirectly they are auspicious.’ (Cc. Adi-lila 5.232, Purport)

Yoga of Ecology, Bhakta Chris, USA: Organic Farmers File Preemptive Suit Against Monsanto

SustainableBusiness.com News

On behalf of 60 family farmers, seed businesses and organic agricultural organizations, the Public Patent Foundation (PUBPAT) filed suit today against Monsanto Company (NYSE: MON) to challenge the chemical giant's patents on genetically modified seed.

The plaintiffs said they were forced to sue preemptively to protect themselves from being accused of patent infringement should their crops ever become contaminated by Monsanto's genetically modified seed.

The case, Organic Seed Growers & Trade Association, et al. v. Monsanto, was filed in federal district court in Manhattan and assigned to Judge Naomi Buchwald. Plaintiffs in the suit represent a broad array of family farmers, small businesses and organizations from within the organic agriculture community who say they are increasingly threatened by genetically modified seed contamination despite using their best efforts to avoid it. The plaintiff organizations have over 270,000 members, including thousands of certified organic family farmers.

"This case asks whether Monsanto has the right to sue organic farmers for patent infringement if Monsanto's transgenic seed should land on their property," said Dan Ravicher, PUBPAT's Executive Director and Lecturer of Law at Benjamin N. Cardozo School of Law in New York. "It seems quite perverse that an organic farmer contaminated by transgenic seed could be accused of patent infringement, but Monsanto has made such accusations before and is notorious for having sued hundreds of farmers for patent infringement, so we had to act to protect the interests of our clients."

Once released into the environment, genetically modified seed contaminates organic seed for the same crop. For example, soon after Monsanto introduced genetically modified seed for canola, organic canola became virtually extinct as a result of contamination. Organic corn, soybeans, cotton, sugar beets and alfalfa now face the same fate, as Monsanto has released genetically modified seed for each of those crops, too. Monsanto is developing genetically modified seed for many other crops, thus putting the future of all food, and indeed all agriculture, at stake, the plaintiffs say.

In the case, PUBPAT is asking Judge Buchwald to declare that if organic farmers are ever contaminated by Monsanto's genetically modified seed, they need not fear also being accused of patent infringement. One reason justifying this result is that Monsanto's patents on genetically modified seed are invalid because they don't meet the "usefulness" requirement of patent law, according to PUBPAT's Ravicher, plaintiffs' lead attorney in the case. Evidence cited by PUBPAT in its opening filing states that genetically modified seed has negative economic and health effects, while the promised benefits of genetically modified seed--increased production and decreased herbicide use--are false.

"Some say transgenic seed can coexist with organic seed, but history tells us that's not possible, and it's actually in Monsanto's financial interest to eliminate organic seed so that they can have a total monopoly over our food supply," said Ravicher. "Monsanto is the same chemical company that previously brought us Agent Orange, DDT, PCB's and other toxins, which they said were safe, but we know are not. Now Monsanto says transgenic seed is safe, but evidence clearly shows it is not."

The plaintiffs in the suit represented by PUBPAT are: Organic Seed Growers and Trade Association; Organic Crop Improvement Association International, Inc.; OCIA Research and Education Inc.; The Cornucopia Institute; Demeter Association, Inc.; Navdanya International; Maine Organic Farmers and Gardeners Association; Northeast Organic Farming Association/Massachusetts Chapter, Inc.; Northeast Organic Farming Association of Vermont; Rural Vermont; Ohio Ecological Food & Farm Association; Southeast Iowa Organic Association; Northern Plains Sustainable Agriculture Society; Mendocino Organic Network; Northeast Organic Dairy Producers Alliance; Canadian Organic Growers; Family Farmer Seed Cooperative; Sustainable Living Systems; Global Organic Alliance; Food Democracy Now!; Family Farm Defenders Inc.; Farm-to-Consumer Legal Defense Fund; FEDCO Seeds Inc.; Adaptive Seeds, LLC; Sow True Seed; Southern Exposure Seed Exchange; Mumm's Sprouting Seeds; Baker Creek Heirloom Seed Co., LLC; Comstock, Ferre & Co., LLC; Seedkeepers, LLC; Siskiyou Seeds; Countryside Organics; Cuatro Puertas; Interlake Forage Seeds Ltd.; Alba Ranch; Wild Plum Farm; Gratitude Gardens; Richard Everett Farm, LLC; Philadelphia Community Farm, Inc; Genesis Farm; Chispas Farms LLC; Kirschenmann Family Farms Inc.; Midheaven Farms; Koskan Farms; California Cloverleaf Farms; North Outback Farm; Taylor Farms, Inc.; Jardin del Alma; Ron Gargasz Organic Farms; Abundant Acres; T & D Willey Farms; Quinella Ranch; Nature's Way Farm Ltd.; Levke and Peter Eggers Farm; Frey Vineyards, Ltd.; Bryce Stephens; Chuck Noble; LaRhea Pepper; Paul Romero; and, Donald Wright Patterson, Jr.

Bhakta Chris, New York, USA: The Humble Musings Of The Manhattan Monk 4/24/11

We come upon a certain sense of trust when we fully idealize another person, but this trust is see-through and nebulous, because neither the trust or the ideal of the other person is full and actual.

Real trust develops through a process of vulnerability and honesty, of acceptance and tolerance, earned through understanding and solidified by forgiveness. Trust is not handed to us like loose change; it is formed from the alchemy of a maturing relationship, and it fully takes hold from the ground of a deep mutual and active faith in the mercy of Krsna.

This faith is the corner stone that pushed the relationship forward, so that you and I survive each other's faults and illusions, and help each other to fully transcend them. You are not offended by my falsities. You help me to be cured of them, to be true, and in this you earn my trust in such a way that it is forever concrete.

Trust is the least cheap substance in this world. Its real value comes through not a false idealization but through a care and courage that can't be turned away from any monster emanating from within our false self.

Turn around and face the face of death. Nowhere else can we find freedom and meaning in our lives. Does your asana, your stock portfolio, your head shot push you to face the void with a certain courage and conviction? Until we stop trying to out-run time, our hairs will perpetually become white and our body crusted and burnt from this fear that enraptures us.

Yet this fear is something that never actually belongs to us. We have stolen it, yet it is the least valuable thing.

Knowledge and detachment are our sword and shield. We know we are tiny, yet we know we are loved by Krsna. We know we are eternal. With this, we turn to face the reaper and he cowers like a deer. He gives us our freedom with great haste, and we fully become who we are meant to be.

In this age of Kali we have the cheated and the cheaters, this more so when it comes to the food we buy and consume.
