H.G. Sankarshan das Adhikari, USA: Wednesday 27 April 2011--Charge Your Batteries Every Day--and--What Does Lord Brahma Create?

A daily broadcast of the Ultimate Self Realization Course(tm) Wednesday 27 April 2011 The Supreme Personality of Godhead, Lord Sri Krishna, and His eternal consort, Srimati Radharani are enjoying transcendental pastimes in the topmost planet of the spiritual world, Sri Goloka Vrindavan. They are beckoning us to rejoin them. (Click on photo to see a larger image.) Our Mission: To help everyone awaken their original Krishna consciousness, which is eternal, full of knowledge and full of bliss. Such a global awakening will, in one stroke, solve all the problems of the world society bringing in a new era of unprecedented peace and prosperity for all. May that day, which the world so desperately needs, come very soon. We request you to participate in this mission by reviving your dormant Krishna consciousness and assisting us in spreading this science all over the world. Dedicated with love to ISKCON Founder-Acharya: His Divine Grace A.C. Bhaktivedanta Swami Prabhupada, our beloved spiritual master, and to you, our dear readers. Today's Thought: Charge Your Batteries Every Day Uploaded from Kaunas, Lithuania If you want to have a productive day of mobile phone use, you must make sure to fully charge your mobile phone's battery before you start your day. And if you want to also have a productive spiritually enlightening and fulfilling day, you need to make sure to charge your spiritual battery also with a deep, intense meditation session. There are many different meditation techniques, but in this hectic materialistic age there is only one technique that is sufficiently powerful to elevate your consciousness beyond the material plane. That process is mantra meditation, chanting the holy names of God. You may choose any name of God according to your religion. And if you do not have any specific name, you can take the advice of the Kali Santarana Upanisad that the most powerful names of God to meditate upon for attaining self-realization are: Hare Krishna, Hare Krishna, Krishna Krishna, Hare Hare / Hare Rama, Hare Rama, Rama Rama, Hare Hare. Sankarshan Das Adhikari Teaching Mantra Yoga Meditation Kaunas, Lithuania--25 April 2011 http://www.backtohome.com/images/2011-Spring/Meditation_Lecture.JPG Answers According to the Vedic Version: Question: What Does Lord Brahma Create? Respected Gurudeva, At the beginning of the universe all of the souls are impregnated into the universe by the glancing of Mahavishnu. So what does Lord Brahma create at the beginning of the universe? Is it only the bodies of the living entities, the water and the land? S.C. Answer: Material Bodies and Material Planets Being empowered by Krishna, Brahmaji from his own body and mind creates the 8,400,000 different types of bodies for the inhabitants of the material world. He also creates the fourteen divisions of planetary systems on which they reside. H.H. Prahladananda Swami: Lecture – SB 9.9.45 Different Elements Of Ecstacy In Krishna Consciousness

SB 9.9.45: The demigods, the directors of the three worlds, wanted to give me whatever benediction I desired. I did not want their benedictions, however, because I am interested in the Supreme Personality of Godhead, who created everything in this material world. I am more interested in the Supreme Personality of Godhead than in all material benedictions.

ISKCON Melbourne, AU: Today's Darsana

Since today marks the disappearance of Srila Vrndavana Dasa Thakura, here is a little excerpt of his famous artwork, Sri Caitanya Bhagavata:

27/04/11
"There is no difference between Lord Caitanya and Lord Nityananda. Just as Lord Krsna and Lord Balarama are essentially the same and original forms of Godhead, Lord Caitanya and Lord Nityananda, who are directly Krsna and Balarama, are the same personality."

And here is the
darsana that the two brothers offer us today.

SB 9.9.43: Mahārāja Khaṭvāńga thought: Not even my life is dearer to me than the brahminical culture and the brāhmaṇas, who are worshiped by my family. What then is to be said of my kingdom, land, wife, children and opulence? Nothing is dearer to me than the brāhmaṇas.

SB 9.9.15: Great sages, completely freed from material lusty desires, devote their minds fully to the service of the Lord. Such persons are liberated from material bondage without difficulty, and they become transcendentally situated, acquiring the spiritual quality of the Lord. This is the glory of the Supreme Personality of Godhead.

SB 9.9.16-17: Bhagīratha had a son named Śruta, whose son was Nābha. This son was different from the Nābha previously described. Nābha had a son named Sindhudvīpa, from Sindhudvīpa came Ayutāyu, and from Ayutāyu came Ṛtūparṇa, who became a friend of Nalarāja. Ṛtūparṇa taught Nalarāja the art of gambling, and Nalarāja gave Ṛtūparṇa lessons in controlling and maintaining horses. The son of Ṛtūparṇa was Sarvakāma.

SB 9.9.18: Sarvakāma had a son named Sudāsa, whose son, known as Saudāsa, was the husband of Damayantī. Saudāsa is sometimes known as Mitrasaha or Kalmāṣapāda. Because of his own misdeed, Mitrasaha was sonless and was cursed by Vasiṣṭha to become a man-eater [Rākṣasa].

...

SB 9.9.13: Simply by having water from the Ganges come in contact with the ashes of their burnt bodies, the sons of Sagara Mahārāja were elevated to the heavenly planets. Therefore, what is to be said of a devotee who worships mother Ganges faithfully with a determined vow? One can only imagine the benefit that accrues to such a devotee.

SB 9.9.14: Because mother Ganges emanates from the lotus toe of the Supreme Personality of Godhead, Anantadeva, she is able to liberate one from material bondage. Therefore whatever is described herewith about her is not at all wonderful.

SB 9.9.12: Because the sons of Sagara Mahārāja had offended a great personality, the heat of their bodies had increased, and they were burnt to ashes. But simply by being sprinkled with water from the Ganges, all of them became eligible to go to the heavenly planets. What then is to be said of those who use the water of mother Ganges to worship her?

Subhavilasa das ACBSP, Toronto, CA: Book Review: Showcasing the rich art forms of India

Picture
LIVING TRADITIONS IN INDIAN ART: Mapin Publications Pvt. Ltd., in association with Museum of Sacred Heart, Belgium, 502, Paritosh, next to Darpana Academy, Usmanpura, Ahmedabad-380013. Rs. 2500.

This book celebrates the presence of the divine even amidst the mundane and the material in our country. It showcases popular, devotional art in India and also metal icons, masks, sculptures, puppets, and ritual objects of divinities from this country as well as from Thailand, Nepal, Tibet, and Indonesia, as displayed in the Museum of Sacred Art, Radhadesh, Belgium.

Refreshing

It is an effort to show “how contemporary artists continue to create visual representations of Hindu divinities in new and refreshing ways.” Radhadesh being “a spiritual community belonging to the International Society for Krishna Consciousness (ISKCON),” it is only natural that a majority of the paintings in the book should be on Lord Krishna.

A separate section is devoted to the art of the Hare Krishna movement which was also influenced by Italian art and Russian artists. The clarity of photographs, especially that of the beautiful old castle where the museum is housed, is such as to transport the reader to the museum. Also included are brief biographies of the artists.

J. Bhagawati, Ambassador of India to Belgium, Luxembourg, and the EU, in his preface, mentions how the collection “reflects the rich multiple art forms of India.” In her foreword, Chistiane De Lauwer, Curator (South Asia), MAS/ Ethnographic Museum, Antwerp, says she was struck by the lack of knowledge in Belgium about one of the world's most ancient and rich cultures. So, she went on to study Indian art, language, and religion. The museum and catalogue grew out of the need to spread awareness on Indian spiritual art.

Unlike in the West, the genre of spiritual art is still vibrant in India, says Martin Gurvich, Director, Museum of Sacred Art, in his introduction. The museum's focus is on living art forms rather than historical pieces, and so most of the pieces are from the 20th and 21st centuries.

In her essay on the “Living Traditions in Indian Art: The Divine Image,” Tryna Lyons describes how spiritual art is found everywhere in the country and goes on to speak of the art and artists in various regions. Among the beautiful photographs featured from the museum collection are the ones of Lord Krishna with Radha, with gentle-eyed cows, with the gopis on the river bank. Gold-leaf worked paintings in the Tanjore style and Mysore style; the pichhavais (cloth hangings) from Nathadwara in Rajasthan; paintings on cotton and paper by artists such as B.G. Sharma and Indra Sharma; inlay work on wood from Karnataka; beautifully proportioned bronzes of Tamil Nadu; eye- catching Madhubani paintings from Bihar; and rod puppets from Indonesia also find a place. In all, a catalogue that compresses the essence of the museum exhibits and communicates the spirit of popular and contemporary Indian spiritual art to the West.

Japa Group: Remain Connected To Service

Hare Krsna my dear devotees. I was thinking today about how is at the time of death, sometimes we avoid these kinds of thoughts because we are maybe afraid of how would we think. I found a beautiful prayer about that.

O my Lord, will I again be able to be a servant of Your eternal servants, who find shelter only at Your lotus feet? O Lord of my life, may I again become their servant so that my mind may always think of Your transcendental attributes, my words always glorify those attributes, and my body always engage in the loving service of your Lordship? SB 6.11.24
This poem shows that at any situation we should think of the Lord, chant all the time, serve the Lord in our minds when we can't serve Him at the temple, and engage our body and senses at His service by remembering Him. We should never stop chanting, and glorifying the Lord's qualities.

Wishing you a wonderful week of chanting and service.

your servant,

Aruna devi

Rupa Madhurya das, TX, USA: Lecture - Anuttama Prabhu - SB 10.2.13-14 - Respecting other Faiths

Lecture on Srimad Bhagavatam, Canto 10, Chapter 2, Texts 13-14 titled "Respecting other Faiths" given by Anuttama Prabhu.

This series of lectures was given during the 2011 TP/GBC Meetings held here in Dallas.

Dallas, TX
2011-01-28

13 - TRANSLATION

The son of Rohiṇī will also be celebrated as Sańkarṣaṇa because of being sent from the womb of Devakī to the womb of Rohiṇī. He will be called Rāma because of His ability to please all the inhabitants of Gokula, and He will be known as Balabhadra because of His extensive physical strength.

PURPORT

These are some of the reasons why Balarāma is known as Sańkarṣaṇa, Balarāma or sometimes Rāma. In the mahā-mantra — Hare Kṛṣṇa, Hare Kṛṣṇa, Kṛṣṇa Kṛṣṇa, Hare Hare/ Hare Rāma, Hare Rāma, Rāma Rāma, Hare Hare — people sometimes object when Rāma is accepted as Balarāma. But although devotees of Lord Rāma may object, they should know that there is no difference between Balarāma and Lord Rāma. Here Śrīmad-Bhāgavatam clearly states that Balarāma is also known as Rāma (rāmeti). Therefore, it is not artificial for us to speak of Lord Balarāma as Lord Rāma. Jayadeva Gosvāmī also speaks of three Rāmas: Paraśurāma, Raghupati Rāma and Balarāma. All of them are Rāmas.

14 TRANSLATION

Thus instructed by the Supreme Personality of Godhead, Yogamāyā immediately agreed. With the Vedic mantra oḿ, she confirmed that she would do what He asked. Thus having accepted the order of the Supreme Personality of Godhead, she circumambulated Him and started for the place on earth known as Nanda-gokula. There she did everything just as she had been told.

PURPORT

After receiving the orders of the Supreme Personality of Godhead, Yogamāyā twice confirmed her acceptance by saying, "Yes, sir, I shall do as You order," and then saying oḿ. Śrīla Viśvanātha Cakravartī Ṭhākura comments that oḿ signifies Vedic confirmation. Thus Yogamāyā very faithfully received the Lord's order as a Vedic injunction. It is a fact that whatever is spoken by the Supreme Personality of Godhead is a Vedic injunction that no one should neglect. In Vedic injunctions there are no mistakes, illusions, cheating or imperfection. Unless one understands the authority of the Vedic version, there is no purpose in quoting śāstra. No one should violate the Vedic injunctions. Rather, one should strictly execute the orders given in the Vedas. As stated in Bhagavad-gītā (16.24):

tasmāc chāstraḿ pramāṇaḿ te
kāryākārya-vyavasthitau
jñātvā śāstra-vidhānoktaḿ
karma kartum ihārhasi

"One should understand what is duty and what is not duty by the regulations of the scriptures. Knowing such rules and regulations, one should act so that one may gradually be elevated."

Bharatavarsa.net: Bhakti Vikasa Swami: our aim: to destroy the position of the mundane scholars

Yes, that is our aim, to destroy the position of the mundane scholars. Mundane scholars are called adhyksik, which means simply sense perceivers, no realization. ... Stick to your principles and be Krsna conscious. We have to prove to the world that anyone who is not Krsna conscious is a duskrtina and mudha.

H.H. Satsvarupa das Goswami (Ret.): 292–Poem for April 26th

www.sdgonline.org. SDGonline Daily updates

A Writer of Pieces

New format–I will begin with a poem written on the day of its printing. Then I will print random excerpts of books I have printed over the last 35 years. I hope this variety will be pleasing.

Poem for April 26th

Headache, thunderclaps
rain on the roof,
this is the setting of my japa yajna.
How can I get the reader of
these lines to pay attention? I
have heard the names chanted
sincerely are as good as Krishna
Himself. That ought to do it.

Give him Krishna from
your heart. Your short-term
memory can’t recall what
you just read. Something
about the bhakti-lata
not being hampered by
watering which nourishes the
weeds instead of the bhakti
plant. Pluck the weeds
and grow your pure devotion.

Guru dasa is gone, we are
at peace just the two
of us, he turns out the
light, I sleep and
dream we are tracking
down evidence for book
distribution and it
leads us to a disciple’s
house which is filled
with neighbors’ children.
I woke at 9:00 P.M. and
had to take sleeping pills
to get back to rest.
I am anxious about
getting more autobiog.
but you should be able to enter the
mood, improvising
like guitars in a
fast melody.

Radhanatha Swami is
gone, leaving everyone
satisfied with his
presence. He is always
very busy with many
things but manages to
give himself to each
person as if they were
the only one
and gives universal lectures.

Narayana went to the doctor
to get a shot for his back
hoping to get relief from
pain. He’s a wonderful
presence and calms me
every morning with his
attention and caretaking.

Yesterday we had the ladies
for lunch. They all talked
and I was mostly silent
but enjoying their company.
One is a Thai masseur,
one is my typist,
one is Mother Kaulini
always welcome and
Keli-lalita came for a quick
visit, speaking of yoga
and kirtana.

I keep on trying to produce
and keeping my head clear.
An email from Kirtana-rasa
says I should wear a gem for
astrological security. I will
probably submit to it although
I know that everything is in
Krishna’s hands, despite the stars.

www.sdgonline.org. SDGonline Daily updates

From Life with the Perfect Master

“Srila Prabhupada was soon traveling again, Panditji and I with him, to Calcutta en route to Mayapura for the first international gathering of ISKCON devotees.

“One day in Calcutta I received another short, but merciful chastisement. It had to do with the kitchen in the Calcutta temple, which I found chaotic, and in some details unclean. Srila Prabhupada had asked me how to learn to cook shukta from Pisima, and so I was observing her cooking in the kitchen. I had met Pisima in 1973 and found her kind to sannyasis—she liked to bring them food—and she was, of course, very devoted to her brother, Srila Prabhupada, constantly coming by to bring him a tiffin full of preparations cooked in mustard oil and heavy with spices. Devotees sometimes dreaded offering them to Prabhupada, fearing they would cause him indigestion, but Pisima had a free pass to enter Prabhupada’s room whenever she desired to offer him her devotedly prepared foodstuff.

“Prabhupada particularly liked her shukta. He had taught me in Los Angeles how to make this wet vegetable preparation using kerela (bitter melon), squash, cauliflower, potatoes, pakora, eggplant and yogurt, and I had written it down in a notebook, but I had never mastered the intricate steps necessary to make it to Prabhupada’s satisfaction. Although I could not speak any Bengali and Pisima could not speak any English, I watched her very carefully and took notes. She had her own techniques and ingredients for shukta in addition to what Prabhupada had showed me, and I tried to study and memorize each step. For two successive days—the duration of our stay in Calcutta—I watched the operation and felt that on the next occasion I could do it myself.

“During the course of my lessons I was sometimes bewildered by conditions in the sink. Actually there was no kitchen per say, no separate room with a sink or cooking range. Only a small space in the rear of the temple building with a bucket of flaming coals for cooking and a bucket of water for washing pots. And the methods of Indian cooking were totally strange to me. They did everything in a simple, nonmechanized fashion—like cutting vegetables while squatting on the floor.

“The shortage of space created a chaotic situation. Bengali ladies came in and out on errands, and workers moved around the kitchen on business unrelated to Prabhupada’s lunch.  Understanding neither Bengali nor Hindi, I usually couldn’t tell what people were doing, and I worried that the lunch would be delayed.

“Pisima seemed to be delaying also. Catching her attention and pointing to my watch made no impression on her. I had to stand by and observe without any hope of changing things, even when I saw something that wasn’t up to Prabhupada’s standard. Something about the use of water bewildered me, and on one of my entries to Prabhupada’s rooms I made a derogatory remark for which I paid dearly. My tone was not flippant but again, anxiety-filled. I had thought I should inform him of the strange things going on.

“‘Srila Prabhupada,’ I began, ‘you say that the Indian culture is suci, cleaner than America, which is mleccha, but it appears to me the kitchen here is dirty– ’

“‘You mind your own business!’ Prabhupada said sharply. His words were like a slap and immediately brought me to my senses. There was no need for more discussion. I left his room and hurried back to the kitchen to get his lunch, realizing that I had fallen into mundane pro-Western faultfinding. Why had I allowed myself to get unnecessarily worked up just because of some cultural differences? Prabhupada wasn’t concerned, so why should I be. I remember running to him in confusion about how to handle guests. He had told me, ‘Everything is all right.’ Now he had said the same thing in a different way; mind your own business. Don’t get on the mental plane of rejection and acceptance about temporary things. To identify with the body and mind, thinking, ‘I am an American.’ Just mind your own business. Serve your spiritual master and don’t worry.

“When I returned to his room, carrying his tray filled with little stainless steel cups containing different preparations cooked by Pisima, Prabhupada was very patient and pleasant. He knew far better than I did that the material world is a chaotic place and that a devotee has to keep a clear and sober head. He also knew, to a degree I could not imagine, the soothing shelter of Krishna’s lotus feet.

“Sunshine was brightening his room and birds were singing at his open window as I left Srila Prabhupada to take his prasadam in peace. Despite a cacophony of sounds from the streets—creaking rickshaws, honking automobiles, and hawkers shouting for customers–Prabhupada sat serenely, honoring prasadam. For myself it had been a grueling session, overlooking the Indian ladies’ cooking while praying it would be ready on time. Now I stood outside Prabhupada’s door, relieved, reprimanded, and feeling myself the most fortunate devotee in the crowded temple.

“The Gaura-Purnima festival in Mayapura was a mixture of difficulties and glorious successes. The main residential building was not completed or able to house the approximately 400 devotees who arrived from all over the world. Many had to keep their luggage out on the veranda and sleep there at night. Prasadam was served on the same veranda, which created considerable discomfort. Most of the devotees were visiting India for the first time, and many became sick with dysentery and other diseases. Accepting the austerities philosophically, they reasoned that this was, after all, the first attempt at holding the festival; next year would be better.

“And on the bright side, the gathering of devotees in 1974 was the making of spiritual history. Adjusting to the ways and climate of India, many became deeply satisfied just to be a part of it. For the first time the prediction of the acarya Bhaktivinode Thakura—that one day the sankirtana movement of Caitanya Mahaprabhu would spread to become a world religion, bringing Europeans and Americans together in Mayapura to chant ‘Jaya sacinandana!’ and the Hare Krishna mantra–was being fulfilled. Devotees were thrilled to be in the holy dhama and out together, hundreds strong, on parikrama to visit the tirthas connected to the lila of Lord Caitanya. They bathed in the Ganges, took time to read Prabhupada’s books, shopped in the market—mrdangas, karatalas, Deities, dhotis—for the needs of their temples back home. And best of all, everyone got to see Srila Prabhupada there in the temple room and hear him speak.”

From Japa Walks, Japa Talks

“The man who would answer questions about chanting goes out and chants his own rounds. Using the stopwatch this morning, I notice that the first round took a little over ten minutes. Too slow, but that’s not really a big problem. One of my Godbrothers takes ten minutes a round, and he has been chanting like that for over twenty years. He just accepts it. The main thing is to pay attention and to hear.

“I heard my chanting and didn’t notice other sounds—birds, small chirpy sounds, and then always behind those noises, the sound of the running creek. In the distance a dog was barking. The air was delicious, but I didn’t notice it that much. I didn’t gauge the breeze by the movement of the branches, I just chanted japa.

“It’s pleasant to walk in these hills on a tarmac road. Of course, the real blessing is that I have the whole thing to myself. It’s summer, so it gets light before 5:00 A.M. Nobody’s up to bother me.

“Devi dasi asked a question about faith in the holy name. She started out by quoting Bhagavatam 6.2.19:

‘If a person unaware of the potency of a certain medicine takes that medicine or is forced to take it, it will act without his knowledge because its potency does not depend on the patient’s understanding. Similarly, even though one does not know the value of chanting the holy name of the Lord, if one chants knowingly or unknowingly, the chanting will be very effective.’

“But after quoting this she asked, ‘Since it’s hard to see the effect of chanting, how can we keep faith that the medicine (chanting) is actually working?’

“The simplest answer is to say that she has given the evidence herself with this Bhagavatam verse. I can’t come up with anything better than that. Sastra is axiomatic. If the Bhagavatam says the chanting is effective, then that’s good enough for us. What is the point of asking, ‘How can we have faith?’

”Still, it’s good to think about faith and try to feel it more. We have to learn to count on faith. If we do, we won’t be doubtful or depressed about our chanting. After all, it’s only the skeptic or the atheist who thinks there has to be an immediately perceivable cause and effect. Even he will see (if he wants to look) that there is such evidence. We didn’t give up illicit sex and intoxication by accident. Those were deep habits and difficult to break. How did they suddenly dissolve? We chanted Hare Krishna mantra as given to us by Srila Prabhupada, and that gave us the strength to immediately clean our hearts.

“Therefore, we live by the sastra, not just by our feelings, which may go up and down. When I admitted in a BTG article that I didn’t feel blissful when I chanted, one reader was outraged. He said I spoke like an anti-cult deprogrammer, debunking the effects of the holy name. How dare I admit that I don’t taste the nectar of the holy name. In the article I offered Vedic evidence about the power of the holy name, and I acknowledged that despite my lack of feeling, the sastra says that the chanting is working to deliver me from the bodily conception and bringing me into appreciation of Krishna. Faith is proved by experience, but it is tested before we have experience. Our faith is to follow the sastric injunctions. We don’t look for separate conclusions. Our own research or sense perception does not disprove sastra. Therefore chanting is effective, whether we can sense it or not.”

From Journal and Poems, Book I (January-June 1985)

Mangala-Arati

“Radha-Madhava,
the sahajiya wants to faint
in public at Your feet,
where he hopes to see Your arms move.
But I want You
cemented in my heart,
just like You are cemented
on the altar of the mandir.
Your changes of dress flow
through days of silken pink, blue, yellow …
and You change our lives
as You change the worlds:
at Your will.
This morning I pray,
‘Please make me a firm one
who never forgets Your early morning face,
who never fails Your order.’

“We sat under the large portrait of Srila Prabhupada–twenty or so GBC men and about fifty other leading disciples of Srila Prabhupada from all over the world.

“As incumbent secretary, Balavanta explained our historic work. We are planning to finalize a constitution for ISKCON by Gaura Purnima 1986, the 500th anniversary of Lord Caitanya’s appearance. By open discussion we hope to decide on the contents of the constitution and then the committee will prepare it during the coming year.

“Balavanta explained that the constitution is a blueprint to the house Srila Prabhupada built—the house in which all the world can live. Today’s devotees will not be here after, say, 60 years . We’ll be gone. But we have just received direct training from ISKCON’s founder-acarya, Srila Prabhupada, and so we are meant to establish an enduring foundation. So it is a historic challenge, especially for those GBC members who will be drawing up the constitution.

“Of course, we are struggling in some ways, suffering after the disappearance of Srila Prabhupada, but now our cooperation is being tested. We must discuss and resolve all the controversial issues that divide us while formulating a constitution capable of directing our society now and in the future.

“The first principle we unanimously chose to include the constitution is that Srila Prabhupada should be the center of ISKCON. The devotees presented suggestions how this should be done. Trivikrama Swami said everything we do should be to please Srila Prabhupada and accomplish his will. Bhagavan Goswami said we should keep Srila Prabhupada in the center by accomplishing the goals he set for ISKCON, such as opening temples and systematically spreading Krishna consciousness. Then controversy arose when Bahudaka said that he thought Srila Prabhupada had been to some degree removed from the center of ISKCON by so much attention and worship being accorded to the current spiritual masters. From here the discussion went back and forth. The open communication seemed healthy to me. Now it remains to be seen if the persons with differing views can be reconciled and satisfied.”

From A Poor Man Reads the Bhagavatam, Volume I

“Comment:

“This is an important proof. I’ve heard that over ninety percent of Vedic sastras don’t really focus on bhakti but describe karma-kanda or jnana-kanda.  Therefore, these conclusive statements about the superiority of Visnu worship over material life are valuable. Demigod worshipers and others can find their own supportive statements in literature catering to the lower modes. This verse, however, draws a clear analogy in describing progressive realization.

“Some say that all gods are the same, just as wood, earth and smoke are all ultimately the same because they have their genesis in the earth. Still, there’s a hierarchy of one over the other based on their respective purposes. In the analogy given in this verse, if the purpose is to cook, then we want a flame. Everything is generated from the earth, but you can’t cook with dirt. Neither can you stack wood on top of the earth and place a pot on top of it, expecting it to cook. All you’ll have is rice and dal floating in water. You need fire. Therefore, the wood has to be ignited, brought from the smoking condition into flame.

“Similarly, although the demigods of the modes of tamas and rajas are devas and do accept worship and reward their devotees, that transaction cannot give the desired result. What we really want is eternal happiness—a life full of knowledge and bliss. We may in such ignorance that we think wee can achieve bliss from the material energy or by worshiping the demigods, but that’s illusion. Visnu worship alone can give us the ‘fire,’ deliverance from material life.

“In his purport to this verse, Prabhupada writes: ‘But if there are impediments on the progressive path, everyone, even from the platform of tamas, can gradually rise to the sattva platform by expert direction of the spiritual master. Sincere candidates must, therefore, approach an expert spiritual master for such a progressive march, and the bona-fide expert spiritual master is competent to direct the disciple from any stage of life: tamas, rajas or sattva.

“We may wonder how a disciple who is actually influenced by the lower modes is capable of proper inquiry. If the disciple is so handicapped by rajas and tamas, how can the spiritual master engage him in transcendental work? One answer is that the spiritual master’s order is transcendental. Even someone who is hampered by the material modes can work for the guru. Then the disciple becomes engaged in the gradual process of purification. He may not be immediately transcendental, yet he is transcendental because he is working under a person who is never tainted by material life.

“Prabhupada gives the example of the ignorant apprentice who can do good work as long as he follows closely the order of the expert technician. The technician uses a screwdriver just so, and he indicates to the apprentice to do the same. If the apprentice follows that order, his work will also be expert. In terms of practicing bhakti, that may mean picking flowers for the Deity, reciting prayers from Brahma-samhita, or simply tending to the pure devotee’s physical needs–making his bed, cooking for him, and so on. The disciple also prays to be delivered from those modes which still haunt him.”

Madhava Ghosh dasa, New Vrndavan, USA: Tips on navigating the new midlife stage

I have previously predicted that there will be a Resurgency in ISKCON when Prabhupada’s disciples start to retire and start coming back into active preaching. The following is an article that enunciates the demographic dynamics that will drive this.

Tips on navigating the new midlife stage

By Kerry Hannon, Special for USA TODAY

Marc Freedman kicks off The Big Shift: Navigating The New Stage Beyond Midlife, with a tale of pulling out his newly minted AARP card to score the “senior discount” at the Homewood Suites in Medford, Ore., while requesting two cribs for a room where his 1-year-old son would soon take his first steps.

Freedman, CEO and founder of Civic Ventures, a think tank on Boomers, work and social purpose, had just turned 50, and like many fellow Boomers was facing an identity crisis. He’d been working hard for 25 years, had been through a health crisis, and was tired. At the same time, he surmised he would probably work another 25 years or so in the second half of his adult life.

He was rattled by uneasy questions. “What’s the category for people like me? There are a growing number of us who can be classified as neither-nors. Neither young nor old. Neither retirees nor of traditional parenting age. Tired, perhaps, but neither ready to be retired nor able to afford it.”

In the past, “the fifties and sixties meant retirement, grandparenthood, senior discounts and early bird specials,” he recalls. But with longer, healthier life spans, that’s all changing. “We need a new map of life,” he writes.

Freedman calls this new life stage “the Encore Stage.”

“The surge of people into this new stage of life is one of the most important social phenomena of the new century,” Freedman writes. “Never before have so many people had so much experience and the time and the capacity to do something significant with it.”

Freedman is a natural storyteller, a deep researcher and a forward thinker. His previous book, Encore: Finding Work That Matters in the Second Half of Life, struck a chord with Baby Boomers when it came out a few years ago and started the conversation.

This time, he’s banging the drum for deep-seated social and cultural change, and this time it has a personal tinge. At fiftysomething, he is one with his audience. “We’re not talking about a small segment of the population spending a few years off balance, muddling though. This group constitutes what may be the largest group in society, entering a period that could approximate half their adult lives.”

His vision: “As we confront significant challenges in areas like education, the environment and health care, this windfall of talent could help carry us toward a new generation of solutions.”

Freedman’s passion for this emerging stage of aging is palpable. He delves into the work of those who have gone before him, casting a wide net to quote economists, journalists, professors, historians, authors and anthropologists. If there’s any complaint, it’s that he throws too many voices into the mix.

But go with it. Chances are, you’ll find yourself jotting down notes to read more from these experts at a later date.

He discusses efforts underway at community colleges, fellowships and other programs aimed at handling the needs of this growing segment of the population. He tells the stories of what he calls “a new group of pioneers who aren’t waiting for permission from anyone to begin fashioning this new phase.”

John Kerr, 65, for example, moved from a 40-year career of fundraising at public radio station WGBH in Boston to working as a summertime park ranger in Yellowstone working on environmental issues.

Betsy Werley left a 26-year career as a lawyer and manager of corporate projects for an executive director position at The Transition Network, a volunteer-based group for women over 50 “who want to support, help and advise one another as they move together into a new stage of life,” Freedman writes.

His call to action includes:

•Highest Education. “A key part of preparing for the encore phase is supporting continued development and retraining. Now is the time to develop a new kind of education suited to this new stage of life, blending vocational preparation, personal transformation and intellectual stimulation. We invest all our higher-education time and the vast majority of our higher-education dollars in the 18 to 25 period. We need to make higher education “far more adaptable to people at all stages of life,” he urges.

•National Service, Redux. National service programs — most notably the Peace Corps — were designed for young people, but why not create more of these programs for those over 55? He gives the example of the 2010 Edward M. Kennedy Serve America Act. The law sets a target of 10% for the proportion of AmeriCorps members over 55. Freedman asks: “Why stop at 10%?”

•Individual Purpose Accounts. Boomers have been tapping their kids’ 529 accounts to go back to school themselves, Freedman writes. We need a savings vehicle to help fund post-midlife transitions. He suggests an IPA — an Individual Purpose Account. Financial-services companies could offer them, and there could be employer matches.

“We better get going,” Freedman implores.

Mayapur Online: Appearance of Lord Nrisimhadeva in Mayapur

Based on a talk with H.G. Atmatattva Dasadhikari
On the 24th of March, 1984, at 12:20 a.m., thirty-five dacoits armed with weapons and bombs attacked Sri Mayapur Chandrodaya Mandir. They harassed the devotees and treated them with derision. But the greatest shock came when the dacoits decided to steal the Deities of Srila Prabhupada and Srimati Radharani. Fearlessly, the devotees challenged the attackers.

H.G. Sankarshan das Adhikari, USA: Tuesday 26 April 2011--Super Sweet Weekend in Russia--and--Is It Right to Dread Love?

A daily broadcast of the Ultimate Self Realization Course(tm) Tuesday 26 April 2011 The Supreme Personality of Godhead, Lord Sri Krishna, and His eternal consort, Srimati Radharani are enjoying transcendental pastimes in the topmost planet of the spiritual world, Sri Goloka Vrindavan. Today's Thought: Super Sweet Weekend in Russia Uploaded from Kaliningrad, Russia 25 April 2011--Our visits to Russia are always super sweet because the devotees in Russia so much open their hearts to us. Every program during our short weekend stay here has been unforgettably blissful as we dive deeper and deeper into the sweet nectarean ocean of Krishna consciousness. Even though the vast difference between Russian and English sometimes creates a barrier for communication, the ecstatic kirtans always bridge the gaps. Spring is just beginning now during our short weekend visit. Flower buds are coming out marking the end of the bleak, austere winter. In the same way the splendorous spring of Krishna consciousness is heralding a break from the bleak, desolate Kali yuga as it gradually transforms into the Caitanya Era, an amazing 10,000 year period during which this planet will again become like Satya Yuga. Respected Srila Gurudeva, Please accept my humble obeisances. All glories to Srila Prabhupada. I fall at your feet to kindly clear some doubts which have arisen in my mind. 1. For quite sometime now, I have had a strong feeling that material love only serves the purpose of continuing the human race and nothing more than that. Consequently, I have concluded that it is not at all love but only some sort of illusion that we are put into. Ever since I got this feeling, I tend to dread this love. Are my thoughts regarding this matter right? 2. I have heard of incidents that occurred in the past when brahmanas asked the sudras to stay away from their vicinity lest the latter's shadow fall on them. The reason being they might get contaminated because of the shadows. However, even if it was written in the scriptures exactly in the same way, I guess the meaning was, 'do not allow even a tinge of ignorance to contaminate your consciousness.' Is this interpretation right? If not, I humbly request you to tell me the correct meaning. Your humble student, N.V. Answer: Don't Deny Love. Perfect It. Yes, the sexual attraction urge, which we call love, is nature's way of inducing us to produce children for the continuation of the species. Such love is not actually love. It is lust, the desire to experience intense sensual pleasure. Such pleasure is detrimental for our spiritual progress because it strongly pulls us back into the false bodily conception of the self and thus binds us to remain in the miserable cycle of birth and death. Real love is selfless service without any desire to receive anything in return. The perfection of real love is when we give our love to the Supreme Lord, the source of all existence, because by loving Him, who is the root of all existence, we factually give perfect love to all living beings. Such brahmanas who ordered the sudras to stay away so that they would not be contaminated by the shadow of the sudras are not real brahmanas. Brahmana refers to a liberal, broad-minded person. Such so-called brahmanas who are cruel to others are designated as kripanas or misers. I have never heard that such injunctions are taught in the scriptures. If they are, such scriptures are not for those who want to be liberated from this material existence. Such caste consciousness is the invention of materialistically minded men who desired to exploit others. The actual varnashram system of four social and four spiritual orders is meant for elevating every member of the human society, not for repressing them and keeping them in ignorance. By chanting carefully, you get the strength to follow the orders of your spiritual master, as you associate with Krsna’s name. But we know that if you associate without offense, it is much more effective. Following the four rules and living in devotional service assures you of avoiding the ten offenses.
