H.G. Sankarshan das Adhikari, USA: Friday 29 April 2011--Don't Be Disappointed By the Material Energy--and--Proof for God's Existence?
A daily broadcast of the Ultimate Self Realization Course(tm) Friday 29 April 2011 The Supreme Personality of Godhead, Lord Sri Krishna, and His eternal consort, Srimati Radharani are enjoying transcendental pastimes in the topmost planet of the spiritual world, Sri Goloka Vrindavan. They are beckoning us to rejoin them. (Click on photo to see a larger image.) Our Mission: To help everyone awaken their original Krishna consciousness, which is eternal, full of knowledge and full of bliss. Such a global awakening will, in one stroke, solve all the problems of the world society bringing in a new era of unprecedented peace and prosperity for all. May that day, which the world so desperately needs, come very soon. We request you to participate in this mission by reviving your dormant Krishna consciousness and assisting us in spreading this science all over the world. Dedicated with love to ISKCON Founder-Acharya: His Divine Grace A.C. Bhaktivedanta Swami Prabhupada, our beloved spiritual master, and to you, our dear readers. Today's Thought: Don't Be Disappointed By the Material Energy Uploaded from Kaunas, Lithuania If you depend on this material world for your happiness, you are sure to be disappointed today or tomorrow. Therefore those who are wise do not depend on this material world for their satisfaction. They simply depend on the wonderful, divine arrangements of the Supreme Personality of Godhead, Lord Sri Krishna. If we always depend on Krishna, He will never let us down in any time, place, or situation. So the smartest thing to do is to always trust in the divine arrangements of the supremely merciful Personality of Godhead. This alone can bring true peace and happiness to the living beings. Respected Gurudeva, My son asked, Is there a proof for the existence of God? V.L. Answer: He's the Source of All Existence Kindly inform your son that God must exist because God means the source of all existence. Since it is a scientific fact that we cannot get something from nothing, there must therefore be a source for all of existence. In this way we can understand the proof for the existence of God. Devadeva Mirel, Alachua, USA: Review : Crown Point Cabinetry–Updating the Meaning of Period
Crown Point has long been famous for period style cabinetry. Inset cabinet doors, old-fashioned authentic milk paint finishes, and the use of a variety of native North American wood species helped brand Crown Point as one of the leaders in the market for reproduction kitchen cabinets. Recently while visiting the Crown Point website, I noticed some changes to their product line. In addition to the inset cabinets with exposed barrel hinges, furniture-style toe kicks, and classic brass hardware, I noticed a selection of partial overlay, full overlay/frameless cabinets, and exotic wood species channeling an ultra modern vibe. This was a huge departure from the Crown Point I was previously acquainted with so I promptly sent off an email to the company to learn more.
Here’s some things I learned about Crown Point. In 2006, they introduced their Transitional Line of frameless cabinetry. Now, I was remodeling a kitchen in 2007 and had the Crown Point promotional material sent to me (it came with a bag of microwave popcorn and a dvd). I don’t recall any European cabinet line but rather I do recall a company that seem very intent on only making inset cabinets. It is possible that the new line was not yet included in the printed material I received. While reading over the info that Stacey recently sent me, I was impressed to find out that Crown Point now uses Farrow & Ball paint. Swoon. For those of you unfamiliar with Farrow & Ball, we are talking 132 colours–not colors. This is high end paint. With a British accent. Of course, Crown Point still offers a milk paint finish–very old school.
The last few years have brought the introduction of new construction styles, including the tricked out Square Channel Front Frame suited for an Arts & Crafts style kitchen. It’s nice to see that, despite expanding their line to include transitional and modern cabinetry, Crown Point is still focusing on their period work.
That being said, they’ve also added exotic wood species to their repertoire. Bamboo (I know, not a wood but a grass), zebrawood, and sapele (both threatened African species) round out the door choices for Crown Point, and aesthetically add a lot to the simple slab door fronts. These woods are very popular, along with walnut, when designing a sleek modern kitchen. While mid-century modern furnishings utilized wood veneers, Crown Point’s quality doors are of solid construction natural woods.
Additionally, reclaimed antique woods are also available. I am enamored by the antique chestnut (upper far right) and the antique oak (lower far left). Reclaimed heart pine also rings my bell. While Crown Point is noted for their painted and white kitchens, they do a lovely job with wood as well. Quartersawn white oak (second from left upper & lower) is an elegant, timeless way to utilize a wood species that has fallen out of fashion since the 80′s. Of course, their paint finishes are above and beyond anything you would get from a semi-custom line. Each door piece is painted before construction so that cracks are not visible after installation when wood cabinetry expands and contracts.
Crown Point is a successful, family owned business out of New Hampshire. They’ve been designing high end custom cabinetry since the late 70′s. I find their website a bit difficult to navigate these days, but am willing to forgive them because it seems like they’ve really expanded and gone through changes at a rapid clip. Everything you need to know is on the website; it is full of great visuals and tons of information about the cabinetry. It sort of feels like a new website was made and just added to the old website. The equivalent of an unfitted kitchen? Well, that is a style choice! Whether or not you can afford one of their beautiful bespoke kitchens, do check out the site for inspiration.

Kurma dasa, AU: Totally Vegetarian Menu at The Royal Wedding
All the Vegan tabloids and news outlets are awash with this meaty - oops - veggie morsel of news:
"The Menu for the Royal Wedding will be entirely vegan following the Queen's review of the multi-cultural / celebrity guest list.
At their Royal Wedding Prince William & Catherine Middleton and guests are to eat a mini vegan version of the traditional Great British dish, steamed steak and Kidney pudding that features wild mushroom and walnuts in a rich porter gravy instead of steak and kidney.
The Queen has decided that because there are so many guests from different cultures with different religious and ethical dietary requirements that the most sensible solution is to go totally plant-based to avoid diplomatic embarrassment with a Hindu dignitary eating beef or a Muslim Sultan eating pork.
The Queen's head chef Mark Flanagan has been working on a 100% vegan royal wedding menu but still with a 'best of British' theme. Flanagan is rumoured to have recruited leading British Plantarian and vegan cookbook author Tony Bishop-Weston to advise on Vegan Versions of traditional British fare. Celebrity Vegan cook Sarah Kramer has been brought over from Canada to advise on ingredients for the reworked Royal Wedding cake."
Bravo!

Fasting has been a popular practice among health conscious individuals for centuries. Subhavilasa das ACBSP, Toronto, CA: Hare Krishna Maharani Devi Dasi
From the BBC and the Toronto Sun to the Los Angeles and New York Times, there has been a lot written about the passing of the legenary singer and very creative Poly Styrene with some passing mentions of her being a Hare Krishna. So this is to say Hare Krishna to Maharani Devi Dasi, a devotee of the Lord and even in her passing she is allowing tens of thousands to take the name of Krishna in articles and news coverage.
Excerpts from one of the nicer articles is below and it pays attention to the spirtual path she chose and its reflections in some of her later music and especially her life...
The death of Poly Styrene (aka Marianne Joan Elliott-Said) at 53 marks the end of a remarkable and unconventional life.
Born in 1957 in Bromley, Kent she was brought up in Brixton by her mother, a legal secretary of Scots-Irish descent. Her father was a dispossessed Somali aristocrat. She was always fascinated by this mixed background.
She would eventually move back to London and then to Hastings but Krishna Consciousness would always be important to her, and a source of great strength in the occasional difficult periods of her life.
She was a joy to work with in the studio. We asked her to sing like she used to and at first she said that would be difficult, then walked into the vocal booth and did it in one take, adding an improvised Hare Krishna chant at the end that brought the song an unimagined power and beauty.
She was a wonderful, warm and beautifully eccentric woman in all the best possible ways, and all who knew her recall her lengthy phone conversations, ranging from spirituality to current affairs to music and beyond. She was one of the key performers of the punk period and her powerful songs -perceptive poems about plastic society and consumerism that cut through all the bullshit - still influence musicians three decades later ("Poly Styrene [was] so ahead of her time," noted The Gossip's Beth Ditto in tribute. "She recreated punk"). She was a brilliant, positive spirit in a cynical world. Hare Krishna, Poly, Rama Rama Hare Hare.
To borrow the last sentence of the article...Hare Krishna, Maharani devi dasi, Rama Rama Hare Hare.

Devadeva Mirel, Alachua, USA: Recipe : Stout Mustard & Spicy Tomato Jam
There are some things one thinks about making–like jam. And some things that never cross one’s mind to make–like mustard. But thanks to a semi-recent HuffPo piece on My Friend’s Mustard, mustard has definitely been on our minds. And then when my blogging friend Bluebonnet blogged her mustard, I knew mustard was in my near future. Tuesday Mohini came over to mix up the ingredients. Today, we blended it all up. And canned it! Not without incident.
The recipe for the mustard was found in a copy of Saveur Magazine and is reproduced below.
Recipe : Spicy Guinness Mustard
Our favorite mustard recipe uses brown mustard seeds and Guinness beer (which lends a malty character and hints of sweetness).Ingredients
- 1 12-oz. bottle Guinness Extra Stout
- 1 1⁄2 cups brown mustard seeds (10 oz.)
- 1 cup red wine vinegar
- 1 tbsp. kosher salt
- 1 tsp. freshly ground black pepper
- 1⁄4 tsp. ground cinnamon
- 1⁄4 tsp. ground cloves
- 1⁄4 tsp. ground nutmeg
- 1⁄4 tsp. ground allspice
Directions
Combine ingredients in a nonreactive mixing bowl. Cover with plastic wrap and let sit at room temperature for 1–2 days so that the mustard seeds soften and the flavors meld. Transfer the mixture to the bowl of a food processor and process, stopping occasionally to scrape down the sides of the bowl with a rubber spatula, until the seeds are coarsely ground and the mixture thickens, about 3 minutes. Transfer to a jar and cover. Refrigerate overnight and use immediately or refrigerate for up to 6 months. (The flavor of the mustard will mellow as the condiment ages.)MAKES 3 1⁄2 CUPS
The recipe for the tomato jam is my own and is reproduced below ;)
RECIPE : Spicy Tomato Jam
Ingredients
3 pounds tomatoes / 8 cups diced tomatoes 3 jalapeno chilis, seeded & minced 1.5 inch of fresh ginger, minced 2 tablespoons olive oil 2 tablespoons brown mustard seed 2 tablespoons cumin seed 3/4 teaspoon hing or onion powder 2 teaspoons salt 4 teaspoons calcium water (calcium powder comes with pectin) 1 tablespoon vinegar 4 teaspoons Pomona’s Natural Pectin 5 cups evaporated cane juice
Directions
Heat olive oil in a pot. Add mustard seeds. When mustard seeds pop, add cumin. Brown and then add chili and ginger. Finally, add hing or onion powder. Add tomatoes, salt, calcium water, vinegar. Mix pectin powder into a bowl of sugar. When contents of pot come to a boil, slowly incorporate sugar mixture into pot, stirring frequently. When jam reaches gelling point, pour into jars that have been sterilized in oven at 200 degrees fahrenheit. Work quickly so that you are working with hot jam. Screw lid on and wait for them to pop. Will make approximately 8-10 half pints.

Japa Group: This Is The Greatest Gain
I remember our old flyer, “Stay High Forever, No More Coming Down.” In this case, the “high” is to stay transcendental. It does not mean to be intoxicated; it means to be above the clouds of the material modes of fear and attraction. By chanting I can understand that I am not this body—I’m the servant of Krsna. This is the greatest gain.

H.H. Satsvarupa das Goswami (Ret.): 294—Poem for April 28
4:37 A.M.
A Writer of PiecesNew format—I will begin with a poem written on the day of its printing. Then I will print random excerpts of books I have printed over the last 30 years. I hope this variety will be pleasing.
Poem for April 28
Krishna open arms the
japa is complete with
opened eyes but the mind
was pulled to writing topics
for today. The air conditioner
makes loud, disturbing sounds
We don’t know how to fix it.
Today I receive my yoga Thai massage
and that will interrupt my writing
schedule.Fleetingly the mantras counted
and piled up like snow.
I couldn’t concentrate on their
deeper meaning but accomplished
them dutifully. Now Narayana will soon travel,
but Baladeva tells me not to
worry. He may be gone
a month, but he will
surely return. That’s
comforting to know.Sometimes we have the ladies for
lunch. Nandarani is deciding
whether she’ll retire and move
here to live permanently and
type for me. It’s up to
whether she feels comfortable
in this association.
Baladeva attempted to
uproot the dandelions
but decided they were
thousands and he was
only one. He got a
blister—and gave up.Krishna enters my ears
but doesn’t stay in
short-term memory.
I go on hearing enjoying
His pastimes and teachings.Krishna is the most important factor in
my life, even if I
sometimes forget it
and fall into illusion.
He’s the Supreme Controller
I have faith
He’s my friend, and I
aspire to join Him.
I am so lowly, and
He is so great it
would only be a
great act of mercy
if He would decide to take
me home, back to Godhead.
I can only hope and
go on performing my
sadhana as best I can.• Email to a friend • •
H.H. Satsvarupa das Goswami (Ret.): OLD FRIENDS
From Vandanam
One Man’s Prayer Session
“Prayer is not only personal but private. Prabhupada gave the analogy that we are each like pilots in a one-man plane. We can help each other with instructions on the ground, but finally, each has to fly his own plane. Sincere prayer means you do it on your own, facing your own weakness, surrendering your own will, lovingly. And although God is one without a second (advaitum), we each address Him as ‘My dear Lord.’ So if I share with you what I do in my prayer sessions, it is still up to you to practice on your own. My prayers will not always be yours.“Besides that, I am a neophyte at prayer. Some will say that I shouldn’t even write such things but just go on praying until I gain more realizations. But even in the beginning, discoveries in prayer are so valuable and exciting that I am impelled to share them.
Preparation
“I start my prayer session as early in the morning as possible. Usually I rise by 2:00 A.M. and by 2:30 I am bathed and ready to go. I deliberately scheduled my personal prayer before beginning japa. I like to sit in a chair, before a desk if available. The night before, I’ve put my Bhagavad-gita on the desk and my collection of verses on cards. (I keep the cards in envelopes labeled with their category: morning prayer blueprint; adoration of the Supreme Lord and Prabhupada; Bhagavad-gita verses for morning prayer reading; pray constantly; repentance; prayers and praise of Srimati Radharani; evening prayer blueprint—and my collection is growing.)
“Before sitting I get down on the floor and make dandavats, reciting the pranam mantras in Sanskrit to His Divine Grace A. C. Bhaktivedanta Swami Prabhupada. When I sit, I first relax my body (it takes less than a minute) and lean forward slightly. No question of falling asleep.
“I usually utter my words sub-vocally, or if I think no one can possibly hear, I’ll say them softly audible. The first thing I say slowly and as attentively as possible is the English translation of Prabhupada’s pranam mantras: ‘I offer my obeisances to His Divine Grace A. C. Bhaktivedanta Swami Prabhupada, who is very dear to Krishna on this earth.’ Despite my repeated attempts, I usually fail to ‘hear’ this prayer, but by the time I reach the end of the second line, I’m usually listening, if not actually praying: ‘My obeisances unto you, O spiritual master, servant of Bhaktisiddhanta Sarasvati Thakura. You are so kindly teaching the message of Lord Caitanya and delivering these Western countries, which are filled with voidism and impersonalism.’ I want to be conscious that, for me, everything is coming from Prabhupada. If my prayers don’t please him, they are useless. I beg him to accept me.
Entering the Presence of Prabhupada and Lord Krishna
“I try to pray. I know I don’t have to follow a set formula, but I do. If I feel strong urges to speak ‘out of turn,’ not following my chart, I do so. But usually I proceed step-by- step.
“I first try to come into the presence of Prabhupada and Krishna. They are together. Through Prabhupada I can speak to Krishna; otherwise, the Supreme Lord won’t recognize me.
“But when I speak directly to Krishna, I think that is also what Prabhupada has also taught me to do. For ‘coming into the presence,’ I often think of this Bhagavatam verse, which has caught my attention:
‘The Supreme Lord Sri Kṛiṣhṇa, whose glories and activities are pleasing to hear, at once appears on the seat of my heart, as if called for, as soon as I begin to chant His holy activities.’ (Bhagavatam, 1.6.33)
“And I add a sentence from the purport: ‘Narada Muni penetrates into the presence of the Lord with the transcendental chanting.’
“I rarely open the envelopes and look at my cards. In the case of this Narada verse, I’ve memorized it. Since I mostly keep my eyes closed during the entire one-half-hour session, I don’t want to break my concentration by reading cards, but just to know the cards are there if I need them is comforting.
“I don’t wait for anything special to happen. I just proceed. I try the best I can at each stage and keep moving along. I often say something like, ‘What I want more than anything else is the communion of prayer itself. Please Lord, let me do this.’ Sometimes I may have a bout with doubts about the whole procedure of Krishna consciousness, so I often recite, ‘Ignorant and faithless persons who doubt the revealed scriptures cannot attain God-consciousness. For the doubting soul there is happiness neither in this life nor the next.’ That usually helps. Prayer sessions are potent.”
To be continued tomorrow . . .
From Dear Sky: Letters from a Sannyasi
Santo Domingo
Dear Sky,
I came up to the roof to address Krishna, or just to talk out loud. Different people and projects may engage us, but we take away the trappings, we want to stand on a roof under the sky and say, ‘Krishna, please help me. I want to talk, and I want to enjoy, and I want to sleep—so many things. I just go through life like that, but what I really want is You.’
That’s why I came to this roof. There are many pairs of shoes and sleeping bags up here because devotees sleep here during the night. I’m aware of their presence, although right now I’m alone. Though it’s only 6:25 A.M., cars are starting to go by and the beautiful sky is just turning light. O Krishna, O Radha, I wish that I could see at least a part of You in nature—the sky, the grayish sky. The pastimes of Krishna, the sky in Vrndavana. Let us be reminded of You. And for that we want to go alone, because alone we can speak to that part of us, that isolated part which yearns for Krishna, which is not affected by the daily activities of our life. Krishna, may that part of me thrive and grow so that I can think only of Your pastimes.
“I came to confess, Krishna. My chanting is so sleepy, so poor. I don’t know what Hare Krishna is, but somehow when I come up here it becomes clear that I wish I could be Your devotee, to be with You and talk with You and serve You with the other Vrajavasis. Therefore, I thank You, and I thank you, sky. If I come back later, you won’t be the same. Your pale colors will have disappeared, along with this opportunity. But I’ll try to come again, and I’ll try to retain some of this moment. Hare Krishna.
From Prabhupada Meditations, Volume III
The Fighting Spirit“The Bhagavatam class was on a verse from the Ninth Canto about the pastimes of Lord Ramacandra. It described military action. After the lecture, one of the devotees asked a question about Prabhupada. He said that Prabhupada’s disciples often say that he was like an army general on the battlefield. Did I think this was Prabhupada’s actual character? I replied that Prabhupada certainly did appear like a general, and he himself said that taking to Krishna consciousness was a war against maya. Prabhupada stood in front of the army and moved all over the world to spread the Krishna consciousness movement. However, this is only one of Prabhupada’s many different natures. He is also a transcendental scholar who rises at 1:00 A.M. and composes the Srimad-Bhagavatam. Nevertheless, because Prabhupada was following the orders of the previous acaryas to spread Krishna consciousness, he had to enter the battle and go forward, fighting, organizing the troops.
“Of course, Prabhupada did not ask for militant action with rifles or bombs. He said we should fight by sankirtana and by cultural weapons. Book distribution and prasadam distribution are peaceful ways to spread Krishna consciousness. In performing sankirtana, though, Prabhupada was determined not to be stopped by anyone.
“We need not be intimidated by thinking of Prabhupada as a general. One can possess this fighting spirit in many ways. If a devotee has a terminal disease and continues to chant his rounds, that is fighting. If a mother continues to take care of her children despite the difficulties, that is the fighting spirit. Whenever we continue to set good examples and not admit defeat or hopelessness—that is the fighting spirit of Srila Prabhupada.
From Passing Places, Eternal Truths: Travel Writings 1988–1996
France, 19 km. before Nice
“Narahari is inside changing money, van is parked facing the window of a gift shop. They have earthen pots called ‘Herbes de Provence’ that look like the sweet rice pots offered to Radha-Ramana in Vrndavana. Brass Eiffel Towers, stuffed animal dolls . . .
“Narahari comes back after two minutes and asks, ‘Do you want time to write, or . . .?’
“‘Yes, I do.’ I have to speak up for my five minutes. When we are eating, we might prefer that the servers approach us Indian-style, ‘forcing’ us to take more, or at least bringing seconds out to us rather than showing up empty-handed and asking, ‘Would you like anything else?’ But I’m hungry enough to write that I’m willing to speak up boldly for my five minutes.
“White-haired gents in stylish sweaters standing around, taking a break. Narahari is eager to get going. He promises that if we push on without a break, we can stop for the day by 1:00 P.M. Then I can bathe Srila Prabhupada while Narahari cooks. I’ll try to read also. Don’t hold him up by writing now. Besides, I’m too spaced out to say much. Hills and mist and tourist shop. It’s really behind us. ‘Cote d’Azur,’ signs in French, brighter insides to the tunnels. As we pass Monaco, I go into a whole reverie about Grace Kelly, then Jackie Onassis. The mind never gives us relief. Srila Prabhupada says we’ve got to change the quality of our thoughts, that’s all. Think of Krishna’s heroic activities—how He kidnapped Rukmini, anything! Think of Srila Prabhupada’s heroic activities—what did he do when he left Melbourne? Driving is tedious, but at least we can chant.
“I’m drowsy again. Nodding, and now we are pulling off for another stop. It’s an Esso station. Men and women, I’m sorry I’m so drowsy. Can’t seem to do anything about it. It’s like being hypnotized, mesmerized. Oh, let me chant! Maybe I’ll improve! But I don’t. It’s just an Esso shop, and everything’s the same.
“Narahari serves himself from the diesel pump and then goes in to pay. One day it will all be over, and I’ll have only memories of these temple visits and of the friendly devotees, admiration for the confederation of temples, the books I’ve read, the paintings I’ve seen of Bhagavatam heroes, Lord Vishnu on Garuda, Lord Krishna in Vrndavana, Radha-Krishna. That’s old age. But how deep, how dear, what will it mean to me, my devotional life, as I review it and relive it in flashes?
“Again Narahari asks me if I want to pause these five minutes for writing. Again I say yes. The van is parked facing a billboard advertising what you can buy in the store: Nestle’s Kit-Kat candy bars at 10F. A little apple tart wrapped in tin foil, 10F. What’s the price of my tongue? What can I give up? How much can I love the transcendental realm?
“I see myself as a good fellow, or let’s say a person with a good disposition towards spiritual life, and certainly I’ve heard and received good training. Still, I’m so limited and cut off by those limits. Limited desire for attaining devotional service; limited drive for austerity; limited willingness to give up my own interests in favor of Lord Krishna’s—these myths seem to be exposed as I sit in front of the van in springtime and doze while we drive through the monotonous land of highway.
“An ‘Oasis’ tropical drink in a can costs 5F, and my five minutes is up. We’re fasting. Now we have about an hour before stopping for the day, and I’ll try to salvage what’s left of this drive.”

SB 10.5.11: In the ears of the gopīs were brilliantly polished jeweled earrings, and from their necks hung metal lockets. Their hands were decorated with bangles, their dresses were of varied colors, and from their hair, flowers fell onto the street like showers. Thus while going to the house of Mahārāja Nanda, the gopīs, their earrings, breasts and garlands moving, were brilliantly beautiful.

SB 10.5.3: Nanda Mahārāja gave two million cows, completely decorated with cloth and jewels, in charity to the brāhmaṇas. He also gave them seven hills of grain, covered with jewels and with cloth decorated with golden embroidery.
SB 10.5.4: O King, by the passing of time, land and other material possessions are purified; by bathing, the body is purified; and by being cleansed, unclean things are purified. By purificatory ceremonies, birth is purified; by austerity, the senses are purified; and by worship and charity offered to the brāhmaṇas, material possessions are purified. By satisfaction, the mind is purified; and by self-realization, or Kṛṣṇa consciousness, the soul is purified.
Bhakti Lata, Alachua, USA: Whirlpool of Words
My brain swirls in whirlpools of words.
I write this in those suspended midnight hours. For hours now - hours - I have labored over three speeches that I am writing for my Speech Writing class.
What do I have to show for it? 500 measly words each. For weeks I have contemplated these words, I have hammered out these words, sometimes I have been close to weeping over these words. I have wrung out my soul.
Yeah, 500 words.
And how long does each speech need to be?
1,000 words.
Still, I am learning. I am grateful. The other evening I attended a live theater performance, and one of my professors stepped in to say the lines: "Writers aren't sacred, words are."
When for the Lord, sacred indeed.
***
To pray is to serve; to serve is to love; to love is to live. I pray to serve my spiritual master with love for as long as I live.
The Lord is my North Star when I am lost and I have lost everything; the Lord is my sun when I am found and I have found everything.

Thoughts Wile In The Air
Dubai, U.A.E
Mpho is an impressive young black woman from South Africa who majored in theatre arts. We had the pleasure of having her engage her talents in our dramas over the weekend in Durban. She told of how her training, from perspective, was rather ego based and the philosophy was "it's all about me." She said the techniques were fine but the downside was that she couldn't detect the principle of humility and that was important to her.
It was two days ago in a casual setting in a marquis while actors were readying themselves for the chariot festival performance when she spoke of her icon, her epitome of Nelson Mandela. She referred to Oprah's TV interview. "The way he was in that interview was so inspiring," she said most theatrically.
I was happy for Mpho for identifying the quality behind his heroism. Real success is dependant on the humble state of mind, so we are taught in Krishna Consciousness.
Or guru, Srila Prabhupada, encouraged the modest outlook and the tolerance that parallels it. "Following in the footprints... thinking oneself lower that the straw in the street... be as tolerant as a tree" he referenced the words of Chaitanya Mahaprabhu.
"Always remember this verse (about humility)" he wrote. Underscore it. The word "always" can be given an extra line for emphasis.
Mpho will set out next month teaching theatre arts as therapy and I wish her well. Whatever was missing in her curriculum during her student period might now be an insertion. May the humble greats affect her. And all of us.
Who doesn't wish success?

Ananda Subramanian, Iowa, USA: What Srila Prabhupada really desired for us?
We want to see everyone is happy. That is our mission. ... everyone will be happy if they take to this movement. We want to see that everyone is happy. That is our mission. We don't want to exploit others.
- Interview -July 20, 1972, Paris
Sarve sukhino bhavantu. This is Vedic civilization. "Let everyone be happy." That is Vedic civilization. And the demonic civilization, they're: "Let everyone suffer; I become happy. That's all...Politics means planning for one's own happiness. That is politics. So in our society there should be no diplomacy, no politics. Everyone should be eager how to do good to others. That is Vaisnava. If he's planning something, that "I shall be leader," "I shall be doing something," that is not Vaisnavism.

SB 10.3.19: O my Lord, learned Vedic scholars conclude that the creation, maintenance and annihilation of the entire cosmic manifestation are performed by You, who are free from endeavor, unaffected by the modes of material nature, and changeless in Your spiritual situation. There are no contradictions in You, who are the Supreme Personality of Godhead, Parabrahman. Because the three modes of material nature — sattva, rajas and tamas — are under Your control, everything takes place automatically.

SB 10.3.18: One who considers his visible body, which is a product of the three modes of nature, to be independent of the soul is unaware of the basis of existence, and therefore he is a rascal. Those who are learned have rejected his conclusion because one can understand through full discussion that with no basis in soul, the visible body and senses would be insubstantial. Nonetheless, although his conclusion has been rejected, a foolish person considers it a reality.

SB 10.3.1-5: Thereafter, at the auspicious time for the appearance of the Lord, the entire universe was surcharged with all the qualities of goodness, beauty and peace. The constellation Rohiṇī appeared, as did stars like Aśvinī. The sun, the moon and the other stars and planets were very peaceful. All directions appeared extremely pleasing, and the beautiful stars twinkled in the cloudless sky. Decorated with towns, villages, mines and pasturing grounds, the earth seemed all-auspicious. The rivers flowed with clear water, and the lakes and vast reservoirs, full of lilies and lotuses, were extraordinarily beautiful. In the trees and green plants, full of flowers and leaves, pleasing to the eyes, birds like cuckoos and swarms of bees began chanting with sweet voices for the sake of the demigods. A pure breeze began to blow, pleasing the sense of touch and bearing the aroma of flowers, and when the brāhmaṇas engaging in ritualistic ceremonies ignited their fires according to Vedic principles, the fires burned steadily, undisturbed by the breeze. Thus when the birthless Lord Viṣṇu, the Supreme Personality of Godhead, was about to appear, the saints and brāhmaṇas, who had always been disturbed by demons like Kaḿsa and his men, felt peace within the core of their hearts, and kettledrums simultaneously vibrated from the upper planetary system.

Madhava Ghosh dasa, New Vrndavan, USA: How To Sex a Timber Rattlesnake
The gas pipeline that crosses Bahulaban has been completed and now the reclamation process is about to begin. I had talked to a rep of the pipeline company subcontractor early in the process about some specific details but when I called the contact, I found out that they were no longer doing the work and that a new company had been subcontracted.
I went to Bahulaban to find out who I needed to talk to by approaching the men who were working there. When I arrived, they were loading a trailer. One of them had a muddy garter snake in his hands and was letting it wriggle over one into the next and then switching his hands so it could keep going. Naturally the conversation turned to snakes.
I told the story of how my wife used to be quite scared of snakes and if she saw a garter snake in the garden would stay out of it for the balance of that day. This lasted until she saw a garter snake bite her. She knew she was bitten because she saw the snake bite her finger but its teeth were so sharp and thin that she couldn’t even feel it.
We talked about copperheads and how they are easily confused with immature black snakes.
I mentioned that I rarely see a copperhead here as they are reclusive. One of the guys said that when timber rattlesnakes are cornered they will rattle and try to get away but a trapped copperhead will be more aggressive in attacking as a defensive move.
They said that when working in the mountains of southern West Virginia it wasn’t uncommon to kill 30 or 40 timber rattlesnakes and copperheads in a year.
As there are no timber rattlesnakes in our part of West Virginia the following is academic, but if you ever need to know the sex of a timber rattlesnake here is one method.
The guy said if you pick up a timber rattlesnake by the tail and let it dangle, its penis flops out.
I think it is appropriate to say here, “Kids, don’t try this at home.”

Kripamoya dasa, UK: Adi Shankara Acarya’s saving grace
Shankara was a great teacher in mediaeval India and was once engaged in debate with a great philosopher named Mandana Mishra who lived in the town of Benares. After some days, the philosopher’s wife, Ubhaya Bharati, saw that her husband was gradually losing the debate. Wanting to protect her husband she said that the debate could only be won if Shankara defeated her also. She also argued for a further day or two, and the topic of the debate drifted towards discussion of the Kama Sutra.Shankara was a monk and knew nothing of earthly love, so not wanting to be defeated in the only subject he knew nothing of, he asked for some time to think. He then asked his disciples to help him with his plan: He would leave his body and, through astral travel, enter into the body of someone who knew all about the subject of earthly love. The disciples guarded the empty body of their guru at some distance and Shankara’s soul entered the body of the local king, who had just died. The king sat up in bed and was once again reunited with his wife. But the queen was suspicious because her husband now seemed to be very well educated. Her ministers explained what might have happened and the queen decided that she would like to have her king alive, even though another soul was inside his body. But to ensure there were no reversals to her happiness, she ordered that all dead bodies in the kingdom should be burned, thus preventing the return of Shankara’s soul to his body. The disciples returned to their guru’s body slightly too late, and the feet had already been slightly burned. According to their guru’s previous command, they called out loudly: Tat Tvam asi! Tat Tvam asi! Tat Tvam asi! Rajan! As soon as Shankara heard this, he abandoned the king’s body and re-entered his own body. He saw what was happening and called out to Nrsimha to help him: Lakshmi Nrsimha! Mama dehi karavalambam! The body was returned to normal. He later wrote a song of thanks which runs to 25 verses. Here is one:samsara sagara visala karala kalanakragraha grasana nigraha vigrahasyavyagrasya raga rasanormi nipeeditasyalakshmi nrsimha mama dehi karavalambamand another, in a different meter:mata nrsimhascha pita nrsimhabhrata nrsimhascha sakha nrsimhavidya nrsimho dravinam nrsimhaswami nrsimha sakalam nrsimha• Email to a friend • •
Subhavilasa das ACBSP, Toronto, CA: Varuthini Ekadasi
I know we said we would try to blog the day before Ekadasi as was suggested by some, but once again running a bit behind schedule. There are some restrictions for the day before Ekadasi and hopefully everyone remembered Ekadasi. Here goes the story behind Varuthini Ekadasi.
Sri Yudhisthira Maharaj said, “Oh Vasudeva, I offer my most humble obeisances unto You. Please now describe to me the Ekadasi of the dark fortnight of the month of Vaisakha, including its specific merits and influence.”
Lord Sri Krishna replied, “Oh King, in this world and the next, the most auspicious and magnanimous Ekadasi is Varuthini Ekadasi, which occurs during the dark fortnight of the month of Vaisakha.
Whosoever observes a complete fast on this sacred day has his sins completely removed, obtains continuous happiness, and achieves all good fortune.
Fasting on Varuthini Ekadasi makes even an unfortunate woman fortunate. Upon anyone who observes it, this Ekadasi bestows material enjoyment in this life and liberation after the death of this present body. It destroys the sins of all and saves people from the miseries of repeated rebirth.
“By observing this Ekadasi properly, King Mandhata was liberated. Many other kings also benefited from observing it – kings such as Maharaja Dhundhumara, in the Ikshvaku dynasty, who became free from leprosy resulting from the curse that Lord Shiva had imposed upon him as a punishment.
Whatever merit one obtains by performing austerities and penances for ten thousand years is achieved by a person who observes Varuthini Ekadasi.
The merit one achieves by donating a great amount of gold during a solar eclipse at Kurukshetra is gained by one who observes this one Ekadasi with love and devotion, and certainly attains his goals in this life and the next. In short, this Ekadasi is pure and very enlivening and the destroyer of all sins.
“Better than giving horses in charity is giving elephants, and better than giving elephants is giving land. But better still than giving land is the giving of sesame seeds, and better than that is giving of gold. Still better than giving gold is giving food grains - for all the forefathers, demigods, and human beings become satisfied by eating grains. Thus there is no better gift of charity than this in the past, present or future.”
“Yet learned scholars have declared that giving away a young maiden in marriage to a worthy person is equal to giving away food grains in charity. Moreover, Lord Sri Krishna, the Supreme Personality of Godhead, has said that giving cows in charity is equal to giving food grains. Still better than all these charities is teaching spiritual knowledge to the ignorant. Yet all the merits one can attain by performing all these acts of charity are attained by one who fasts on the Varuthini Ekadasi.”
“One who lives off the wealth of his daughters suffers a hellish condition until the inundation of the entire universe, Oh Bharata. Therefore one should be especially careful not to use the wealth of his daughter. Oh best of kings, any householder who takes his daughter’s wealth out of greed, who tries to sell his daughter, or who takes money from the man to whom he has given his daughter in marriage – such a householder becomes a lowly cat in his next life. Therefore it is said that whoever, as a sacred act of charity, gives away in marriage a maiden decorated with various ornaments, and who also gives a dowry with her, obtains merit that cannot be described even by Chitragupta, the chief secretary of Yamaraja in the heavenly planets. That very same merit, however, can be easily achieved by one who fasts on the Varuthini Ekadasi.
“The following things should be given up on the Dashami, (the tenth phase of the Moon), the day before the Ekadasi: eating on bell-metal plates, eating any kind of urid-dahl, eating red-lentils, eating chick-peas, eating kondo, eating spinach, eating honey, eating in another person’s house/home, eating more than once, and participating in sex of any kind.
“On the Ekadasi itself one should give up the following: gambling, sports, sleeping during the daytime, betal nuts and its leaf, brushing one’s teeth, spreading rumours, faultfinding, talking to the spiritually fallen, anger, and lying.
“On the Dwadasi the day after Ekadasi (the twelfth phase of the Moon), one should give up the following: eating on bell-metal plates, eating urid-dahl, red-lentils, or honey, lying, strenuous exercise or labour, eating more than once, any sexual activity, shaving the body, face or head, smearing oils on one’s body, and eating in another’s home.”
Lord Sri Krishna continued, “Whoever observes the Varuthini Ekadasi in this way becomes free from all sinful reactions and returns to the eternal, spiritual abode. One who worships Lord Janardana (Krishna) on this Ekadasi by staying awake throughout the entire night, also becomes free from all his previous sins and attains to the spiritual abode. Therefore, Oh king, he who is frightened of his accumulated sins and their attendant reactions, and thus of death itself, must observe Varuthini Ekadasi by fasting very strictly.
“Finally, Oh noble Yudhisthira, he who hears or reads this glorification of the sacred Varuthini Ekadasi obtains the merit earned by donating one thousand cows in charity, and at last he returns home, to the Supreme abode of Lord Vishnu in the Vaikunthas.”• Email to a friend • •
Toronto Sankirtan Team, CA: Samadhi is possible
The word kriyäsu, meaning "by manual labor" or "by work," is important in this verse. One should engage in practical service to the Lord. In our Krishna consciousness movement, all our activities are concentrated upon distributing Krishna literature. This is very important. One may approach any person and induce him to read Krishna literature so that in the future he also may become a devotee. Such activities are recommended in this verse. Kriyäsu yas tvac-caranäravindayoù. Such activities will always remind the devotees of the Lord's lotus feet. By fully concentrating on distributing books for Krishna, one is fully absorbed in Krishna. This is samädhi.

Dear Sivarama Swami,
Please accept my humble obeisances.
All glories to Srila Prabhupada.
My husband and I have been experimenting with making vegan milks at home and it is amazing how easy it is. We have a Blentec blender, which is able to produce very high speed. I used a cup of cooked brown rice, about 500ml water and 3-4 dates (but any sweetener would work) and just pressed the soup cycle button. This makes an amazingly smooth milky substance. I also tried oats and nuts like cashews. But rice is the most economic. Of course milk from the above recipe can’t be used for sandesh, paneer, etc, but works great as a drik.
I hope this information is helpful.

If we want to follow the standard for karma free milk, how will it work when those devotees in the Hungarian yatra visit other temples who are not following the same standard, will they have to compromise because they cannot refuse to eat the prasadam which will obviously be prepared with milk bought outside.
Gina says:

Gaura dasi/Prabhus, When I lived in the temples,(talking well over 25 years ago)the approach was that if you could not get milk from protected cows {which you generally could not], you had to use what you could, and if you offer to the Lord, then those cows themselves will benefit from the fact you are using their milk to offer to Krsna.
dusyanta dasa says:

Hare Krishna.
Yes this is the problem in creating double standards in iskcon. If Iskcon was to function as a whole unit then this issue would not be a problem. We have the same standard in Deity worship across the world in iskcon so how comes when it comes to cow protected milk production there are so many different standards.?? Its puzzling.
But i dont agree with Gaura dasi on the understanding of “karma free” milk production even in cow protected milk production herds.
From my reading of Srimad Bhagavatam where Lord Kapiladeva is explaining Devotional Service in Canto three even eating vegetables is considered violence and hence sinful.Just because the Cow is protected does not mean there is no violence involved at any stage in the milk production.Just by picking a Carrot and feeding this to a Cow means violence has entered into the chain of events that produces milk. What to speak of the grass management for Cows to eat, medicines, building materials, enery, transportation and packaging and all the other encumbent activities involved in Cow protection,as far as i have analysed the situation there is violence at every level in Cow protection which means there is no such commodity as karma free and violence free Milk even in protected cow herds.Your assumption is that just because the Cows themselves are not slaughtered then the Milk production is karma free and violence free,i think that conclusion is naive, not comprehensive in its understanding and philosophically incorrect.

Dusyanta dasa/Prabhus, those are interesting points you raise. We kill living entities at every step we take in this world…. I think the idea of ‘violence free milk’, as proposed by Maharaja and which Gaura Dasi is discussing, is that at no point is the cow who gives us her milk (and is therefore mother) going to be killed when she can no longer give milk, or for any other reason. This is the base line, the most important point.. also life for the animals should be as comfortable as possible in this material world. This is what I take ‘violence free milk’ to mean. Ideally there would be Krsna farms enough to supply all of Isckon, but that is not a possibility at present. But there are encouraging developments, eg. the farm at Bhaktivedanta Manor in England. I know that Srila Prabhupada wanted devotees to get all milk from such farms asap.. but in the meantime, did he not allow the use of commercial milk??? Cannot we benefit these unfortunate cows by offering their milk to the Lord? YS
gina says:
May 23, 2011 at 6:19 pm
ps.. I just noticed that Gaura Dasi, uses the term ‘karma free milk’ – umm, that is to imply that we are going to incur a karmic reaction from using the milk from cows that are mistreated, and will be killed? BUT if this milk is offered to the Lord, is that still the case? When we have no choice if milk is to be used to make sweets for example..? Is Isckon to be vegan??… I still say, I heard it many times before, if the milk is offered to the Lord, there is benefit for the cows themselves. Can any devotees comment on this?

Hare Krsna.
Gina thanx for your replies.
I was at Bhaktivedanta Manor for 10years in the 1980′s looking after the Cows and other services in the garden.I was able to speak to many very senior devotees at that time who specifically had much instruction directly from Srila Prabhupada concerning Cow protection. He wanted over 100 milking Cows at the Manor those years ago but it did not happen.100 milking Cows equals a huge herd of Cows if you think about it.The small herds we have in iskcon dont require much looking after but when you get into the 100′s of Cows then thats a different matter and Cow protection becomes a challenge agriculturally and logistically. But my understanding is not just with the protection of the Cows life, that is just a basic requirement, thats easy not killing Cows, but the challenge is the many elements involved in Cow protection ,minimising the Violence, thats a much harder problem. And this is the real goal of Cow protection having 100′s of Milking Cows so we can produce all our dairy requirements and show the example of how to do this on a large Agricultural scale ,not just a family having a couple of Cows.Srila Prabhupada wanted us to show the example globally how cow protection can work for the masses not just a Temple.
In The Bhagavad-Gita As it Is by Srila Prabhupada Chapter9 Text 26 it is explained clearly that by the method of offering foodstuffs in aloving mood, the sinful reactions are relinquished and a devotee is purified by accepting these remnants. The karma attached to eating is determined by the act of offering with a service mood of love, and Krsna says “He will accept it”.And again in Chapter 3 Text 13 there is an even easier instruction here to understand. If we prepare food for ourself or sense gratification, not only are we thieves but also eaters of all kinds of sins.
So my response is yes we can offer milk from un- protected cows if we have no access to protected cow milk.Veganism is no answer to anything in my book.
I agree with you “karma free milk” is a bad choice of words and implies a two tiered system in Iskcon. It would be better to standardise Cow protection and Milk production for all Iskcon members in an equal way.We have come over 30 years since Srila Prabhupada departed and still we have just seed like beginnings in Cow protection.Srila Prabhupada left all the instructions required for Cow protection, there is not really anything to debate about it ,we all love the Cows very much and want to protect them all,so why on earth dont we just DO IT.!!!

Hare Krsna, Chaitanya Candra Prabhu.
Yes i read that article on Dandavats a while back.
I am having a problem understanding the definition and nature of “karma free” anything in conditional life in the Material world.
The principle of Devotional Service to the Supreme Lord,Krsna seems to override the seperate principle of Violence,or i should say the avoidance of violence. It seems to me that we cant avoid violence completely and as explained in Srimad Bhagavatam Canto 3 by Lord Kapila deva on Devotional Service the principle is; not to perfom excessive violence or violence as ordered by the Lord Himself as in the case of Arjuna.
The principle of minimum violence is propounded rather than Non-violence in this Text(Canto3 Chapter 29 Text 15)and comes across as an axiomatic truth rather than trying to avoid violence completely. What ever we can do that minimises the violence is a good thing.
The case of Mrdangas as highlighted on the Dandavats site means someone has got to be able to obtain the skin of a cow after it has died and tan them to make them ready for use as a Mrdanga or else use a synthetic material to replace the Cow hide. But it would be a hard service to skin a Cow especially a Cow that has been protected and loved by you all its life dont you think?
What would we do if there was no alternative and we had to have a Mrdanga?I agree that slaughtering a cow for meat and using the hide as a by-product for Mrdangas is not the best situation to be in so we need to look into our own devotees in iskcon executing this service with minimum violence.I am not comfortable with the term “karma free” because it is against the principle of minimum violence, where it is accepted that non-violence is an impossible goal.We are not trying to be Jains but devotees of Krsna executing glorious devotional service just like Arjuna on the Battle field of Kuruksetra.

Hare Krsna Dusyanta Prabhu
Nice points.
Also from a purely selfish point of view I have hep c and normal milk just doesn’t agree but organic milk makes an amazing difference so I can’t imagine the health benefits that must be there in milk produced from cows that are loved and protected. If we had a book for distribution to educate the masses( and the devotees for that matter)I think that would really get things moving!
gina says:
May 31, 2011 at 2:19 pm
Haribol Prabhus, Yes, organic milk is healthier because of the feed for the cows, and lack of antibiotics etc.. but I do not know if there is that much difference in the protection/ care for the cows??.. in the end they will be killed… for myself, in the vague hope that there is, I purchase it. If I lived near the Manor in Watford, and their milk was for sale – no competition!.. I wish we had more land and more cows!
Regarding a book to distribute – protection for cows is mentioned many times in standard ISKCON books such as Higher Taste.. is that still available??
dusyanta dasa says:

Hare Krsna.
Dear Gina, I was born into farming and have been a farmer all my life.I used to milk over 300 cows twice a day and have worked and gained alot of experience on many types of farms. The difference between “organic” produced milk and “normal” produced milk does depend alot on each individual farmer. Some organic farmers use alot of violently produced fertiliser for the grassland management whereas alot of normally produced milk use prilled artificial fertiliser for the grass management. As far as my experince goes all cows eat grass during the spring, summer and autumn and then a silage of grass plus silaged barley peas and maize as a whole crop which is all “organic”.
The use of antibiotics for Mastitis and other diseases has waned considerably in modern UK produced milk and there are rigorous regulatory measures to avoid anti biotical milk reaching human consummers.
The last job i had when i was milking approx 200 cows a few years ago there was not any antibiotic used at all, instead we used japanese mint cream on the exterior of the udders for any build up of mastitis which obviously had no direct influence on the milk itself.
I am fairly skeptical there is much difference on a gross level but subtly there may be a better influence on the consummer with “organic” milk.
Organic fertilisers are mainly made up of dead bodies, blood, hooves, horns and other bodily components so there is a massive amount of violence involved in “organic”
farming,horticulture,fruit and flower production.
At the Manor in the 1980′s we used Calcified Seaweed, and Liquified Seaweed as foods for the Vegetables and flowers as well as good old Cow manure, which we had alot of.Also we grew Comfrey and Stinging nettles which we made into a fantastic soup for feed and spraying Tomatoes,Peppers flowers and Roses.Along with bio-dynamic planting(growing plants and seeds by the phases of the moon)we would also grow accompanying plants to help protect the main crop from attacks from insects and aphids. Each morning during Japa we would all go through all the tunnels(polythene tunnels)and physically eject all the slugs and snails into trays and take them for a little walk out of harms way! They also got the benefit of hearing the Holy names.

Haribol Dusyanta, You must have been at the Manor when I was there – I lived there in 1980′s..mostly at the end of the decade…so many devotees!..I recall those plastic tunnels…ha.. and yes merciful to the snails!.. I do the same in my own garden.. So organic milk is not always much different it seems?..Kali yuga is so degraded, that what was a matter of course in other yugas, is now somehow a ‘specialist field’ of activity.. cows milk is very important for humans, honey also {aka Lord Balarama!] – I could not be a ‘vegan’ in avoidance of these two important sources of nourishment.. none the less, if only we had more protected cows!!
Gopinatha Acarya Das says:

Dear Prabhus,
There is no evidence whatsoever in any of Srila Prabhupada’s words and teachings to the effect that the cows benefit by having their milk offered to Krishna.
(If that is the case then we can expect in future lives to be born as cows, have our milk offered and go to slaughter)
That is a cop out and smacks of offense to the holy name by committing sin knowingly. The concessions he made regarding offering milk from cows going to slaughter initially to jump start the movement are not to be considered the permanent standard and could be considered withdrawn and superceded by later instructions.
The principle is that in the beginning, somehow or other fix the mind on Krishna and later on the rules and regs may be gradually introduced.
BUT, SP says that Rupa Goswami is not neglecting
(rejecting) the vidhi, and if we do not introduce them “THE OFFENCE INCREASES, that chance is there.”Srila Prabhupada considered this such an important subject matter that he delivered various ultimatums to his most senior disciples towards the end( but many before as well)
Take this one, one of some really scorchers:

nūnaḿ bhagavato brahman
gṛheṣu gṛha-medhinām
na lakṣyate hy avasthānam
api go-dohanaḿ kvacitSYNONYMS
nūnam — because; bhagavataḥ — of you, who are powerful; brahman — O brāhmaṇa; gṛheṣu — in the houses; gṛha-medhinām — of the householders; na — not; lakṣyate — are seen; hi — exactly; avasthānam — staying in; api — even; go-dohanam — milking the cow; kvacit — rarely.
TRANSLATION
O powerful brāhmaṇa, it is said that you hardly stay in the houses of men long enough to milk a cow.
PURPORT
Saints and sages in the renounced order of life go to the houses of the householders at the time they milk the cows, early in the morning, and ask some quantity of milk for subsistence. A pound of milk fresh from the milk bag of a cow is sufficient to feed an adult with all vitamin values, and therefore saints and sages live only on milk. Even the poorest of the householders keep at least ten cows, each delivering twelve to twenty quarts of milk, and therefore no one hesitates to spare a few pounds of milk for the mendicants. It is the duty of householders to maintain the saints and sages, like the children. So a saint like Śukadeva Gosvāmī would hardly stay at the house of a householder for more than five minutes in the morning. In other words, such saints are very rarely seen in the houses of householders, and Mahārāja Parīkṣit therefore prayed to him to instruct him as soon as possible. The householders also should be intelligent enough to get some transcendental information from visiting sages. The householder should not foolishly ask a saint to deliver what is available in the market. That should be the reciprocal relation between the saints and the householders.

“Saints and sages live only on milk.”
Therefore His Divine Grace gave this ultimatum January 21, 1977:
“WE should be SATISFIED locally by our food, by our cloth, by OUR MILK. That’s all.
Let the whole world GO TO HELL. We don’t care.
If you want to SAVE YOURSELF ALSO, YOU DO THIS.
Here is an example. If you want artificial life, city life, and hellish life, you do.
But we shall live like this. This is the ideal life…
WE keep the ideal style of life. YOU LEARN AND DO IT. I am not encroaching upon your independence, but IF YOU WANT TO BE HAPPY, you follow. This is our process.
Apani acari prabhu jiveri siksaya. YOU be happy, VERY IDEALLY, and people will learn.
But this can be possible only on the basis of Krsna consciousness.”
So Prabhus! If we want to be happy, and even save ourselves (from —-, as Srila Prabhupada is inferring above), then produce food and milk by protecting cows and bulls as a vaisya and live on THAT,
live on the 25% tax of THAT by facilitating and protecting THAT as a ksatriya,
serve as a sudra to eat(drink) THAT,
or teach THAT( but first learn it) living only on THAT(milk)as a brahmana(ideally “Saints and sages live only on milk.” also:
“The brahmana cannot take any other food except it is made of milk preparation.” LA, Dec4,1968).
I.E everyone only eating milk products from our protected cows (and food produced by the bulls)through CO-OPERATION of these four DEVOTEE livelihoods.
(“Because I have taken sannyasa, therefore I cannot any more do anything.” If need be, he has to act as ksatriya. Or a sudra. It doesn’t matter. March 12, 1974 Vrndavan

Prabhupāda: No luxuries. Live very simple life and you save time for chanting Hare Kṛṣṇa.
Haḿsadūta: Yes, Prabhupāda.
Prabhupāda: That is my desire.Don’t waste time for bodily comforts. You have got this body. You have to eat something. You have to cover yourself.
So produce your own food and produce your own cloth.Don’t waste time for luxury, and chant Hare Kṛṣṇa. This is success of life.
In this way organize as far as possible, either in Ceylon or in Czechoslovakia, wherever…Save time. Chant Hare Kṛṣṇa.
Don’t be allured by the machine civilization.
Haḿsadūta: Yes, Prabhupāda.
Prabhupāda: This is soul-killing civilization, this kind way of life, especially European countries.
Anywhere you can inhabit it. It is not very difficult.
A cottage; you can produce your own food anywhere. Am I right?
Haḿsadūta: Yes, Prabhupāda. We will do it.
Prabhupāda: And money, spend for Kṛṣṇa–for Kṛṣṇa’s palace, for Kṛṣṇa’s temple, for Kṛṣṇa’s worship, gorgeous, as gorgeously as… Not for false…
This is the human civilization.
And to organize this, varṇāśrama will help you
to divide the society —
brāhmaṇa, kṣatriya, vaiśya–as there is division in the body.
That will help. Don’t waste human form of body for sense gratification.
I wanted to introduce this.
Now I have given you ideas. You can do it. You are all intelligent. For Caitanya Mahāprabhu’s para-upakāra… So you do good to others.
Not exploit others.
Any human being who has been bestowed by this body has the capacity to chant Hare Kṛṣṇa. Give them chance and make situation favorable.
Is that clear?

Japa Group: Sweet Like Sugar Candy
The holy name, character, pastimes and activities of Krsna are all transcendentally sweet like sugar candy. Although the tongue of one afflicted by the jaundice of avidya (ignorance) cannot taste anything sweet, it is wonderful that simply by carefully chanting these sweet names every day, a natural relish awakens within his tongue, and his disease is gradually destroyed at the root.Upadesamrta• Email to a friend • •

Bhakti Lata, Alachua, USA: A Story
This particular story began when I was thirteen - I began to develop a chronic, mysterious illness that only became progressively more painful. One day at school when I was fourteen, Google was just emerging as a tool to find information, so I searched for the symptoms of my illness.
A form of cancer.
6 months to 1 year to live.
I remember that my mind numbed, my vision became sharp and blurred at the same time. I remember that I stood up from the computer and walked out into the hot sun. Students and teachers busily moved about me in a whirl, and one question echoed in my mind:
Why?
How do I describe how it feels to hear one's own death sentence? At fourteen, I was planning all the things I would do - the world to travel, schools to establish, people to meet - and in one moment it had all been taken away from me. It seemed so unjust, so unfair.
With my deep nature and immature age, the weight of the mystery of life and death began to crush down upon me that day and for many years to come. I did not tell anyone what I had found. Instead, I searched for the meaning of life in scripture, in my faith.
The next several years brought in a merry-go-round of doctors. One doctor in particular looked at my condition and nearly declared that I had cancer and would need a very invasive surgery if I had any hope to live. Her diagnosis was incorrect, but the mystery persisted.
For my fifteenth summer, I flew to my childhood home of New Vrindavan. A spiritual teacher was visiting then, by the name of Radhanath Swami. One morning he was giving a lecture and I decided to stay. His lecture spoke about life and death - the immediacy that at any moment we may die and the immediacy of taking to spiritual life right now. Tears streamed down my face because I knew he spoke from realization - he must have heard his own death sentence in his life once, because his words resonated so deeply within me.
An elder woman who had known me for many years as a child saw me crying and came over to comfort me. She asked me what was wrong. All I could say was, "This is true."
I struggled for many years with my illness, but I found shelter in Krishna Consciousness, and I found shelter in the guidance of Radhanath Swami.
Radhanath Swami once told me that in metalworking, gold is put into a fire to purify it. The hotter the fire, the purer the metal becomes. Our soul is like that - sometimes if the Lord is especially loving and kind, He will put us into the fire of an experience to purify our soul.
More than a decade has passed since that fateful day at school. Several years ago, my illness left me just as mysteriously as it came. To this day, I still do not know its name or cause.
Or maybe I do: its name was "fire" and its cause was to purify my soul, to learn to live every day of my life, every moment of my life, every breath of my life for the Lord. Some days I weep tears of gratitude for that fire, and grateful to my spiritual master, Radhanath Swami, for teaching me that that fire was one of the most beautiful blessings I could ever receive from the Lord.• Email to a friend • •
Bhakta Chris, New York, USA: The Humble Musings Of The Manhattan Monk 4/28/11
We patiently place one foot down and we patiently wait for the will and the strength to put the next foot forward. I cling to the lotus feet of Guru and Gauranga so that in this teeter-tottering forward I don't completely lose my balance and fall over the edge of the cliff.
We must have patience, lest we go mad. Lest we become so driven we drive ourselves right into the abyss of trying to be someone whom we are not. A mellow, engaged intelligence, aloof from the vagaries and the whirlpools of the mind, yet deeply ingrained in the ongoing blissful struggle for life and love, gives us the proper speed in devotional life. This allows the actual grace of the Vaisnavas, and their seeds of pure intention placed in our hearts, to properly fructify.
Above all, patience is letting Krsna work His will through our tiny hands and hearts. We let go to His embrace and His desire, and this is the sweetest release into the arms of our greatest friend. We give up our predilection to be the "center of the universe", gaining an active detachment in service that makes us properly functioning instruments of His sweet heart.
***
To just see it in their eyes
No matter how dolled up, how fabulous, how in a rush
How many votes, how many albums sold.
There is not real happiness in this city, in this world
Only at Your lotus feet.
Bring them to your lotus feet
You see it in their eyes
No matter how their appetites are being fulfilled
The reflection of the hole within their heart
Fill it at Your lotus feet
When will I no longer hesitate? Reach out with my heart with tact, warmth, the needful. The vision of the saintly, manifest in the proper action, setting up a impenetrable shelter, no holes in the roof.
***
To over come a deep fear rooted in the ratty vines of the false ego, a fear that quite simply prevents us from acting as the sweet instrument of the Lord.
What does this mean to act as His instrument? It is a total, unselfish, vulnerable gift of one's being to doing His work and will in this reality. No longer do we ever put ourselves ahead of His considerations. This is where the great blessings of patience and courage are needed. To kill this fear, to remove this dam, to shatter the obstacles that prevent this torrent of Divine love from flowing into our hearts and outwards.
But I am afraid of this. Only steadiness, determination, and patience will help me to lose this primal, animal fear. There is no magic-trick, no self-help method other that chanting of the Holy Name. This is the greatest hope and help.• Email to a friend • •
